NATIONAL COLLEGE OF IRELAND
REPUTATION The National College of Ireland is a not-for-profit college with charitable status, which derives 37% of its funding from the Irish Government. We have a proud history as a third level educational institution. Established by the Jesuit order in 1951 as the Catholic Workers College, we established a reputation as the National College of Industrial Relations (NCIR) and in the late 1990’s the College became the National College of Ireland (NCI). The National College of Ireland is a not-for-profit college with charitable status, which derives 37% of its funding from the Irish Government. We have a proud history as a third level educational institution. Established by the Jesuit order in 1951 as the Catholic Workers College, we established a reputation as the National College of Industrial Relations (NCIR) and in the late 1990’s the College became the National College of Ireland (NCI). We are the largest provider of CIPD awards and CIPD recognised programmes in Ireland and have a reputation as the college of choice for HR professionals or those seeking to develop into the profession. This MA HRM programme draws on the experience of NCI in the field of Human Resource Management and Employee Relations. It is a double accredited programme and is accredited at the highest level by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and is also accredited by the Mediators Institute of Ireland (MII) . The programme provides a route for students and HR professionals to gain professional membership whilst also meeting our commitment to developing the HR community. The programme aims to develop graduates with the skills and knowledge which reflect the challenges facing HR professionals in today’s marketplace.
In line with recommendations from the Hunt report (2011) one of the unique selling points and a distinguishing feature of this programme is the flexibility that is afforded to students. Students can complete the Masters in HRM full-time or part-time and can commence the programme in September or January every year. Students are also given the choice to complete a Post-graduate Diploma in HRM and exit, with the option of returning at a later stage to complete a full Masters in HRM. We offer the Postgraduate Diploma on a modular basis also. This allows students who may not be able to commit to a full year of academic study the ability to undertake a module of study at a time that suits them. A small number of students have utilised this route and have done so for a number of reasons ranging from spreading the financial costs to being involved in project driven work in their organisations to those heavily involved in sports. Another major distinguishing feature of the programme is the ability of students to complete a level 9 award with membership to a professional body in one calendar year on a part-time basis. The programme is unique in the Irish market this regard. See Figure 1 Programme outlines are available online: http://bit.ly/pgdhrmnci; http://bit.ly/MAHRMparttime; http://bit.ly/MAHRMFT.

“One of the most valuable things I gained from the MA was being able to join the CIPD and get that accreditation. The CIPD is a professional HR body that you need to be a part of if you want to be anything in the HR world. “ Micheal Arkins, Part time MAHRM 2011
The majority of HR professionals in Ireland had come from NCI. Choosing the MA in HRM in NCI was one of the most exciting and best decisions I have ever made. Not only did I make friends for life, but I pushed by boundaries and learned skills in Mediation and Conflict, Strategic HRM, Talent management, People resourcing and of Individual research and thesis writing, all skills that are adaptable to any discipline and industry. From a BA in Music and Geography to a First Class honours in HRM, and in my dream job, it’s easy to say, NCI was the right step to my career. Drew Jay Davis, 2016/2017, MA HRM
I truly found the MA in HRM in NCI an enlightening experience. A year flew too fast! It has opened doors for me that enabled me not only to gain practical knowledge about HR but also helped me to start a great and challenging career in this field. Serena Lamboglia, MAHRM 2017

CAREER DEVELOPMENT The MAHRM is well established as the programme of choice for both graduates seeking to kick start a career in HR and for professionals who wish to further their career in HR and other more senior positions in organisations. NCI has an excellent employment record and was described by the Sunday Times Ireland University Guide as having “one of the most consistent and best graduate employment records” in the country. We have been recognised nationally for our work with students and won the national AHECS award for Excellence in Employability in 2012,2013,2014 and 2016. NCI faculty and Careers team work collaboratively with senior HR figures and employers and have developed a suite of offerings to assist students in developing their career. As an example this week MA HRM students attended a networking event “Getting into HR & Recruitment” Director of CIPD; Head of HR Shared Services Telefonica, ESB Graduate Recruitment Manager, Senior Manager - Ibec and Hays Recruitment Manager. MA HRM students also registered to complete a 6 week Certificate in Career Management Skills. It is employer led and consists of highly practical and interactive two hour workshops delivered by graduate employers including Jameson, HedgeServ, Airbnb, BDO, PwC, Musgrave, Enterprise Rent a Car, ESB, Hays, EY, Citco, SAP, Robert Walters, Ryanair, Energy Communications, SAP and Aryzta.

INNOVATION
Block teaching is utilised in both full-time and part-time modes of delivery. •
This allows for the delivery of topics in a focused and in-depth format suitable for postgraduate students. Through a mix of lectures, group work, learner presentations, and problem solving within the context of a concentrated period of learning. A single module is undertaken in the main for two to three weeks for full-time students followed by the assessment which is banked. For the part-time student cohorts, the modules are delivered over a three or six week period (depending on credits of module). Students have the option, if they are registered as modular students, of completing each module as a full time or part time student, giving them maximum flexibility. It also means that any student who misses a block for whatever reason has the option of making it up with either the full or part time cohort.
• • •
Scheduling of lectures
In scheduling the blocks for full-time students, schedules allow for two non-teaching days in each week. Students are encouraged to take up the opportunity of developing experience in the field of HR and also to participate in other career development activities. The testimonials below highlight the fact that students benefit from the flexibility this affords them and the purposefully inclusive nature of the lectures.
I joined the MA HRM in January of 2015 – I was delighted that NCI had the option to join the course at the start of the second semester as I wasn’t ready to start the previous September and by January I didn’t want to wait until the following September. I completed Semester Two first followed by Semester One and then wrote my thesis, graduating in November 2016. Although I joined a class that was already together since the start of September 2014, I didn’t feel in any way behind. NCI have an excellent structure of block teaching where you focus completely on one module for up to 3 weeks. My favourite thing about NCI was the small class sizes; with small numbers I think the learning experience is enhanced as it is more like a tutorial than a lecture. The MA HRM is accredited by CIPD and this definitely gave me a competitive advantage when applying for jobs.’ Aimée Crowe 2015/2016 MA HRM
As a first international experience I was quite overwhelmed by the idea of pursuing the course being a foreign student. However, from the very first day of lectures I was choreographically involved in classroom discussions and assignments. It’s a matter of pride to mention being a part of the business school at NCI pursuing HR masters among my peers at work.” Shubham Sharma; MAHRM

RESOURCES
Applied learning is focused on through the use of case studies in class and assignments linked to the workplace where possible. The configuration of learning strategies includes face-to-face traditional lecturing to web-based lessons, and from direct instruction to self-directed learning, covering also a range of intermediate possibilities in between. A variety of teaching strategies which include, but is not limited to problem based learning (PBL), workshops and seminars allow subject guardians to match the requirements of their specific subjects with the learning preferences of the students The use of Moodle as a platform for class material enables students to access class notes and assignments 24/7 and allows for more flexibility particularly for part-time students. Increasingly the College is utilising recordings of classes and support materials to embed student learning. This is particularly useful in a module such as research methods where students can access relevant information as and when they require it during their dissertation journey. Jonathan Lambert, the Maths Support Tutor has developed over 200 short YouTube clips which take each step of data analysis and break it down for students. (http://bit.ly/ncistats ) Similarly Dr Colette Darcy has recorded a number of her classroom sessions which are then made available to students to view in their own time. (http://bit.ly/colettenci)

SKILLS DEVELOPMENT The transferable skills are explicitly incorporated into each module at programme development stage and each module is delivered and suitably modified to ensure students have the opportunity to develop these skills. Furthermore, the programme was developed in partnership with CIPD to develop in students the professional competencies required as a HR Professional. The use of block teaching enables more in-depth analysis of cases and exercises which develop key skills such as teamwork, analytical thinking, problem-solving and presentation skills. The block delivery also ensures that there is sufficient time for student engagement and discussion. Students are actively encouraged to share experiences of their industry and sector with the group. In this way students learn as much from each other than they do from the lecturers. This also provides students with excellent networking opportunities to build relationships in the HR field which last long past graduation. Students attend and engage in conferences as highlighted previously with the various CIPD events and they participated in. The mentoring, employer networking and career trek events are all interactive in nature and are designed and formatted deliberately to develop in students communication, teamwork, networking and presentation skills.
