Lieutenant Governor’s Message Hello Guardians, Welcome to the final issue of The Golden Gazette for

the 2015-2016 Term! I hope you enjoy this final Yearbook issue as a recap of all that we’ve accomplished this past year. Though only a year has passed, we’ve done so much as a division! From Divisional Council Meetings, to district events, to tons of service projects, this has truly been a golden year for Golden Gate. We’ve had DCMs every month, 1-2 Monthly Divisional Service Projects, and tons of social and club events in between. We’ve even grown as a division—officially welcoming the addition of University of San Francisco to our family. We’ve reached communities across the bay area and beyond and have created a name for our organization. Our leaders at the club, division, district and even international levels have taken our organization to great heights and we only have more room to grow from here. Thank you to the club officers, for creating a foundation for the organization. Thank you to the divisional board, for pulling off every divisional event effortlessly providing opportunities for us to come together as a division. Thank you to the district board for providing us resources and always being there to support the clubs. Thank you to international for connecting us to Circle K’s across the world. And of course, none of this would be possible without the support and work of our general members. Thank you to all the members for your service and for making every event a success. It’s been an honor being able to serve as your Lieutenant Governor and I’m so glad to have met all of you this year. I hope you enjoy and keep this yearbook as a memento of all that we’ve accomplished. It’s truly been an amazing year and this yearbook is a perfect way to capture all these achievements.

Peace, Love, GG.

SERVICE Hello Golden Gate Guardians! I cannot believe my term as one of your Divisional Service Chairs is officially over. I just want to say thank you to everyone who has either helped contribute ideas for divisional service projects or those who have attended our events. From rebuilding mobile homes way back in the summer with Habitat for Humanity to making a splash in a child’s life with Kinship Youth Program, all of you have made the work so much easier with your passion and dedication for service. Coming into this term, I had huge goals for increasing the quality and number of service projects in our Division. Thanks to all your support as active members within our Division, you helped me realize our service goals. And where would service be without my amazing co-chair? Jasmine, thank you for being such a supportive and dedicated partner in crime. Throughout my time in Circle K, I don’t think I have ever seen someone as dedicated about service as you are. Coming into the term, I knew you had the passion for service. But what I have seen this year from you has definitely inspired me to work harder. I leave all of you with one of the fondest memories I had the pleasuring of having this year during October, where we spent two days building a new home in East Oakland. The Rebuilding Together construction crew expressed doubt that they’d be able to complete their project. To their amazement, at least 100 members from Circle K showed up to volunteer that Friday and Saturday. And it wasn’t just members from Golden Gate. Leaders from Capital and even Sunset journeyed to come help. And in record timing, we built that house from the ground up. Blood, sweat, and all, we did it. Thanks to you.

Bryan wu, 2015-2016 golden gate co-service chair

Hi Golden Gate!
It has been an amazing 3 years since I have joined Circle K International. Thank you all who have been a part of my journey! I still remember how I joined CKI and it would not have been possible without a handful of people who inspired me to achieve more. I have always had a passion for service, but doing service with others takes it to a whole new level. I am not saying doing service by yourself is not as fun or any of that sort than doing it with a group, but doing something you love with your friends or the people you enjoy being around makes the experience that much better. In the beginning, I had doubts whether to join CKI, but I took a dive anyway. There were definitely some ups and downs during my journey, but I would not exchange my experience in CKI for anything else. This year I had an opportunity to serve as Golden Gate’s Divisional Service CoChair, which was nothing but eye opening. I was able to view things on a broader spectrum, but received the chance to get to know more people on a more personal level. I encourage everyone to try new things, whether that is to apply for a leadership position or stepping outside of your comfort zone, because you never know where it will take you. “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” ---Wayne Gretzky I want to thank my doppelganger, Bryan, as my other half being Divisional Service Chair. This year would not have been as smooth as it was without him! Thank you everyone in Golden Gate for giving me the opportunity to serve as your Divisional Service Co-Chair. It has been a pleasure! P.S. DIVISIONAL BOARD AND GOLDEN GATE, YA’LL ROCK <3 #service4lyfe

February DSP #1: Wood Park Beautification by Andrea Perez, University of San Francisco PULL!...PULL!...Those roots were sure difficult to pull out but a good breakfast that morning and the aid of Neekon Broomand (DVC) and his mighty tools, we were able to get them out in no time. With every new root removed it was exciting to see who would get the largest one out. Helping make Oakland beautiful again paid as our efforts where revealed when we all turned back to look at how many invasive species we were able to remove and reveal the beautiful native plants we knew residents would be sure to appreciate. This service event was very fun, showing how fun it is to work together to get things done and how teamwork really helps finish up on time. To end our service there, a mighty race occurred up the hill with a compost bin ran Kellie and Robert as we all cheered on to see who would make it up there first.

February DSP #2: Chinese New Year Run by claire lee, uc Berkeley Golden Gate had not one, but TWO divisional service projects for the month of February. The second service project was our annual joint project with Sunset Division! We all woke up bright and early on Sunday, February 28 to volunteer with the SF Chinatown YMCA at their Chinese New Year Run. Volunteers helped as course guides and monitors, start and finish helpers, and water station attendants. We got yummy breakfast in the morning, and then were handed bright green vests and sent off to our respective stations. Golden Gate Division got to ride in a cute little school bus and were dropped off by the Embarcadero. Once the run started, we made sure that the cars didn’t get in the runner’s paths and cheered on the runners! Despite the early start time and cold weather, it was truly inspiring to watch runners persevere through the run. There were young kids and older adult runners, and some people even dressed up like monkeys to celebrate the Year of the Monkey! This was a great event because we got to meet Circle K’ers from Sunset Division as well as some Key Clubbers from San Francisco schools. The Chinese New Year Run raises funds for the YMCA's youth and teen programs. This year, proceeds helped benefit PEP, the Physical Education Program serving more than 1,600 youth from Chinatown and the surrounding neighborhoods daily with free fitness, nutrition and wellness programs. We also got a fun little goody bag at the end and a free t-shirt! I can’t wait to do this event again next year!

District Large Scale Service Project By Aaron Dante, SFSU On the early morning of February 13th, CNH Circle K members from Northern California and Northern Nevada came together for District Large Scale Service Project (DLSSP) North in Oakland, CA. We revisited East Oakland PRIDE Elementary where we previously helped the school beautify their campus for DLSSP last year. After grabbing a quick breakfast at a nearby park from the school where registration was held, everyone migrated into the school where we immediately started having a orientation about the day. From meeting new Circle K members, to playing icebreakers with friends as we waited to teachers to arrive, good vibes radiated throughout the event. After all the teachers arrived and requested help, everyone at the event went to their respective stations. From helping teachers clean their classrooms, stapling packets and booklets for students, organizing books, to weeding their garden, and repainting hopscotch/ four square boxes, we definitely made an impact on the community and East Oakland PRIDE Elementary. From seeing drastic changes of the school and hearing the many thanks that the teachers gave to the volunteers, it was such a rewarding experience to help out East Oakland PRIDE Elementary. Although we will might not witness the impact from the eye’s of the children, seeing the progress that we made as a district by the end of the day made me really proud of being a member of this district. I hope we can continue this project for the next DLSSP since I personally believed that it was such a meaningful project!

March DSP #1: Yogathon BY Jasmine LIU, DVC On March 6th, members from Golden Gate helped out with an event called, Yogathon, hosted by an organization called Yoga Reaches Out. Yogathon (yoga-marathon) was an event where people helped raised funds for Yoga Reaches Out by participating in their Yogathon event. Located in Richmond, CA we helped out with setting up tables and stations for the event, where health product companies were able to sell or give free samples of their products. We also helped Yoga Reaches Out organize gift bags that were given to the people who were participating in the Yogathon. Seeing people united together for spiritual and athletic purposes was a really calming experience of that weekend. The volunteers were able to enjoy watching people do yoga, got free samples of kale chips, and also got a free t-shirt! Overall, I really liked the event and enjoyed the good vibes that this event provided.

March DSP #2: Candlestick Park by Aaron Joshua Dante, SFSU

On the morning of Saturday, March 12th, our Golden Gate Division came together at San Francisco’s Candlestick Park, for the final Divisional Service Project of the 2015-2016 term. Through the City’s chilly morning weather, members first listened to a short information session given by the event’s coordinator on the history of the park and its habitats. Before getting to work, the coordinator taught the members how to properly use tools such as the Tamping Bar, Post Hole Digger and Pick to ensure safety for all the members. Attendees then split into small groups and began their gardening, planting different types of small plants into the soil. The service project brought members together to not only have fun gardening, but socialize with other members from the Division and reminisce on their favorite events from the closing term. We finished the service project with lunch provided by the event coordinators, and pictures to commemorate a successful service project, and year filled with impactful service.

sfsu: Project valentine

by Emilie Wong, San Francisco State University

"Lights, Camera, Auction!" 2016 marked CKI at SFSU's fourth annual Project Valentine,a themed dinner-date auction. Project Valentine is a fundraising event that benefits Project Eliminate, a campaign to help eliminate maternal/ neonatal tetanus globally. This year's theme was Red Carpet so we got to see many stars dressed in their fancy attire. Just like the years prior, the event was a success as we got to enjoy good food and good company. Many thanks to all the people who helped to make the event a night to remember!

Napa Valley College Inter-Club Council: East Egg Extravaganza by Marilyn Nguyen, NVC

The week of midterms before Spring break (March 16 and 17), eggs began to pop up around Napa Valley College’s campus. Each egg was filled with treats and point slips for students to claim prizes. The week before midterms, the Napa Valley College Inter-Club council was preparing for an easter egg hunt where students would be able to find eggs filled with candy, mini-erasers and paper slips to redeem bigger prizes. Students were able to find eggs in a variety of places throughout the campus whether it was hidden on a tree or on a window ledge in the library. NVC Circle K members were able to help with filling eggs and creating posters to publicize the events. Students who didn't participate in looking for eggs were also able to come up with the most devious of hiding places from on a ledge of a whiteboard in a classroom to hidden in a tree, students were able to claim prizes from giant chocolate bunnies to baskets full of treats and more. It was the first event of it's kind hosted by the interclub council. Overall, it was a fun event to help out with. Though one of my favorite parts was hiding the eggs, to be able to come up with devious hiding places and even at times in plain sight, I think that each part of the process of the event from making posters to filling and hiding eggs was equally as rewarding. I'm glad to see Napa Valley College Circle K as well as the Inter-club council working together on creating new events for the students to cheer on the students and to give them some activities to help de-stress from midterms and transition into Spring Break.

Leadership Hello my fellow Golden Gate Guardians! Somehow, this past year has gone by in a flash, and my term as your Divisional Executive Assistant is officially over. It has truly been an honor for me, to serve as a member of your Divisional Board, and to work closely with each of the Chairs in bringing various events for all of the members to enjoy. It brings me great pleasure to have seen so many members grow within the Division this past year, making the countless hours of planning events all the worthwhile. I am so proud of each and every individual in our Division, for taking the initiative to become leaders, and leaving a lasting impact on every community they serve. Without our members, we cannot call ourselves a Division, because only when we are unified, can we truly work to serve and lead others around us. And how would our Division be unified without the help of its Divisional Board?! Robert, Bryan, Jasmine, Marilyn, James, Gina and Alan, you have all inspired me to push myself as a leader even through the toughest of times, and without you all, this year would not have been as successful or enjoyable. Even during the meetings that went deep into the night, I have enjoyed every moment working with you all, and I could not have asked for a stronger group of individuals to work with this past year. Whether it be through cheering at District events, participating in numerous different workshops, or serving throughout the Bay Area, I hope each of you have enjoyed your year in Circle K this past term, and have created memories to last a lifetime. Congratulations Golden Gate on a booming year! Stay stunning, and continue on leading, impacting and inspiring others!

-Aaron Dante, 2015-2016 Golden Gate Executive Assistant

Hello Golden Gate Guardians! Can’t you believe that the 2015-2016 term just ended and a new one just started? Although my term as the Newsletter & Graphics Chair was short compared to the rest of the Divisional Board, this experience has meant a lot to me. Coming in as a first year, I didn’t know what to expect from this experience or had much knowledge about this division. After attending divisional events, my passion and love for this division continued to grow. Being able to create newsletters and graphics for this division has been such a honor. From taking photo at events, to asking members to contribute by writing articles, to compiling seasonal newsletters, it’s been an amazing journey. Having the opportunity to serve as your Newsletter & Graphics Chair has given me the opportunity to learn about other people’s Circle K experiences, to listen their stories, and bring those stories to the members of Golden Gate. I hope you had an amazing term this year with the rest of Golden Gate and I hope that you enjoyed this yearbook! Enjoy the night, get your yearbook signed by your fellow guardians, and come join the rest of us as we travel to our last destination: Banquet to celebrate the end of an amazing term one last time!

University of San Francisco First General Meeting by Diana Hoang, University of San Francisco USF Circle K’s first general meeting was a successful one. The club’s president was absent due to an emergency, leaving the rest of the board to set up the presentation that was carefully prepared by her. Being the Vice President, I led the meeting. Before the meeting started, Joe Wu, the Kiwanis advisor, gifted us a bell and gavel that were previous owned by a high school Key Club that disbanded. Like how all Circle K meetings start, I hit the gavel against the bell and initiated the meeting. Emilie Wong, the president of SFSU Circle K presented and explained Circle K’s three tenants to the club. The new board members then introduced themselves to guests and members present. Emma Quo is our treasurer; Ivana Perez is our secretary; Nabila Maharani is our historian; Allyssa Shara-Mae Arangorin is our Publicist; Mari Pascual is our Kiwani Family Chair; Andrea Perez is our President; Janet Fang is our VP of Service; and I am the VP of administration. I announced the upcoming events for the spring and led a few games, including The Human Knot and Telephone Charades. The games were fun, amusing, and effective as they encouraged communication and interactions between Circle K Family members. After enjoying pizza, I hit the gavel against the bell to adjourn the meeting. The meeting would not have turned out so wonderfully if it were not for support of SFSU Circle K and UCB Circle K. USF Circle K’s E-board collaborated wonderfully and their amazing teamwork and spirit enabled the meeting to go smoothly.

March DCM: Talent Act Price by Emmanuel Escobal, CSU East Bay

It’s the last DCM of the 2015-2016 CKI Term and we all gave final updates about March events while announcing plans for the upcoming term ahead. With DCON coming up that same week, all members from clubs in the Golden Gate Division began practicing for the DCON Talent Act once the DCM is over. This year, we’re performing as a division where members from all over Golden Gate come together to perform in front of hundreds of attendees present at the convention. It’s a great experience to perform with members from all schools in the division where there are skits and dances in our act. Our talent act theme is Winnie the Pooh where Pooh and his friends travel around the Hundred-Acre Wood to find some honey. This will be my 2nd time performing with the division as I also did the talent act last year. We all practiced really hard to be ready for the talent act and even though practice took longer than expected, we are able to clean, block, do transitions, and do entire runthroughs in a span of 3-4 hours, which normally takes many weeks to do. It was a lot of hard work and it’s going to be all worth it once Saturday night comes around. We all have fun practicing for this talent act and no matter what happens, we will put on a great show for everyone at DCON and bring the spirit of Golden Gate to life.

District Convention 2016 by Monica Willemsz, DVC

Memories are something to be shared, and the California-Nevada-Hawaii Circle K District Convention 2016 was one weekend where one’s experiences quite often surpassed expectations. This was when tears were shed for better or for worse, friends were reunited, knowledge was gained, and above all, memories were made. Together, along with the other 8 divisions that comprise the CNH District, Golden Gate members took part in a weekend where service was baked fresh. The opportunities for members to bond, learn, and lead were endless, from participating in elections and attending workshops, to showing talent and dancing the night away, Golden Gate members were present everywhere. This annual event was an amazing opportunity for Circle K members of all years and schools to reflect on the past year and prepare for the upcoming term. Golden Gate in particular created a strong presence, sweeping during awards, and nominating countless individuals for District Office, 3 of whom were elected to represent the division and serve the members of CKI. The amount of effort and energy put into the preparation of this event could not have been paralleled by any other District, and it is without a doubt, that each member is proud to be a part of CNH. Golden Gate’s spirit glowed throughout the whole term and most definitely shined brightly at DCON. The convention only marked the beginning of what will be an amazing term to be in Golden Gate. Thank you to all those who participated, facilitated, and attended DCON, congratulations to everyone on a successful term, and hope to see you all next year.

Fellowship April 9, 2015 at 1:46PM. This was when I submitted my application to apply for Golden Gate Divisional Spirit and Social Co-Chair. I remember working on the application, the nerves, and how much thought I put into the application and even the decision to apply for the position. We had just chartered Napa Valley College, and I had been appointed president, and I was torn between the possibility of club and division conflicts and if they were to arise if I should do what was best for the club, division and the organization as a whole. It was through chatting with various members and friends did it convince me to take the leap of faith and actually apply. When I began my term, I had assumed that the tenant, fellowship - meant just spirit gear as well as divisional and club cheers shouted until we lost our voices and socializing with members. Throughout the term, the meaning of fellowship changed and evolved as I grew. I experienced many firsts: the murder mystery - no matter how chaotic the circumstances, I was truly humbled to be able to work with the task force and my cochair as well as the divisional board to put together an event for members to enjoy. There were many obstacles and various points when I questioned myself- it was the lowest points that became the most meaningful to me. To see the members support one another in our darkest of times, as well as in our brightest - and to see how open-minded and how supportive we are of each other has changed how I define fellowship. I'm humbled to have been able to serve Golden Gate and made the memories I have and I am excited to see what the future has in store for us. Go go Golden Gate, number one in the state!

-Marilyn Nguyen, 2015-2016 Golden Gate Spirit & Social Co-Chair

This term has been full of highs and lows, but to me, I would take all the lows over not being here with all of you. Every time I went to an event, I was greeted by warm smiles whether it be 5am or 9pm. But best of all, being able to lead you in cheers at different events was amazing. One voice inspiring others to cheer brings you a feeling that’s unimaginable. Just seeing it doesn’t compare. So I thank all of you for giving me that wonderful feeling. I couldn’t have asked for a better division to serve with. Although this term has come to a close, we have had so much to smile about. We all have grown so much, and I am glad to say that many of you are the reason why I have become the person I am now. Thank you all for supporting us by coming out to our events, and I hope you had fun. So thank you for all that you’ve done, all that you’ve served, and I hope you had a blast.

This retreat was one that showed a bright example of how Circle K embodies the tenant of Fellowship. Members of Circle K throughout the division had the opportunity to come together for a weekend and share laughs, team building, enjoy Bryan Wu's delicious food, watch with intensity as some played Jenga, and participate in a very complex game of charades. From cooking together, playing games, doing meaningful icebreakers and friendship-building exercises, I was able to connect with members on a more personal level and got to socialize with some of the most amazing people that involved with Circle K. During the event, people wrote positive messages on sticky notes and put them into bag for new and old friends. My highlight of the retreat was getting my bag of positive notes at the end of the retreat and also watching others read theirs. All of the notes were very motivating and supportive, where I was able to realize that I could not wait to be more involved with this amazing Circle K family and go to all the divisional events as a Golden Gate Guardian!

UCB Welcome-Back Iceskating Social by Cecilia Nguyen, UC Berkeley

I was able to plan and chair my own social, specifically for UC Berkeley’s Spring Semester Welcome Back Social, as our past Spirit & Social Chair introduced the Chair-A-Social Program to the members of the club. Thanks to the help of board members, I was able to not only plan out the logistical details of the event but also help transport everyone to the location safely, which I was very thankful for! During the event, I was elated for my fellow club members to skate around the rink and allowing for nostalgic feelings to enter their minds and talk about how they used to skate when they were younger. In addition, it was heartwarming to see everyone be so supportive and helpful to those who initially said they weren’t even going to skate and help them maneuver around the slippery and hard ice rink. I’m especially thankful for those who took time out of their own ice skating to help me, a person who has tried and failed miserably at skating, to make sure I was okay and that I wasn’t going to fall on my face and cry like a sad child! Initially thinking that members didn’t have fun at the ice skating social, I was so happy to hear that everyone had an enjoyable time and for those who said that the ice skating social would be one of the events that they would consider a favorite. I believe this social was able to be one of the examples to showcase that although the members within our club may be different and have varying personalities, at the end of the day, it doesn’t matter because we all enjoy each other’s company and we are able to have a fun time as long as everyone is able to have a fun time with us.

Broomball Social by Aaron Lee, UC Berkeley

Golden Gate Broomball was really fun! Everyone was able to socialize and get to know each other and/ or introduce one another a bit beforehand before we all went to the ice side to get ready and play. When we got our gear (a rubber broom and a helmet) and got on the ice, it was kind of weird because I’ve never been on ice without skates before, so the lack of control threw me off. The game started though and before I knew it, everyone was rushing towards the ball. It was great seeing everyone so competitive. Everyone either knocked into each other on accident or fell on their butts. I personally fell a few times myself because when I had the chance to swing and hit the ball, I swung too hard and ended up slipping and falling. Ice hurts. It was still an awesome experience though, especially when my team started winning because we made a few goals at first. Things got heated when I saw some member throw someone else’s stick across the ice but it was still kind of humorous. Even though we were all in a room full of ice, it got hot really quickly for everyone and a good amount of people were sweating too. It was all fun though, and when we all finished we had some hot cocoa and took some pictures together. 10/10 would do it again.

Wise words from your fellow Guardians A couple of wise words from graduating/transferring members of the Golden Gate Division! From advice about life, Circle K, or school, they definitely have words of wisdom to share with the younger generation of Guardians!

Advice: CKI is an extracurricular and that means it should be extra in addition to your school curriculum. Have fun with your time in Circle K because it only lasts for a couple of years. P.S. JOIN KIWANIS AFTER. -Mike zhou, UC Berkeley Advice: Have fun! Go out, meet new people, and build relationships. For all you know, you may meet your future best friends that will stay by your side during your ups and downs, when you need it the most. Make Circle K something to be remembered, by yourself and others. Don't make it an obligation, but something you enjoy. -Jasmine LIu, DVC
