Project 01

Refugee Settlement: The Renewed Haven An Island Community for Rohingya Refugees In 2017, nearly one million Rohingya refugees were forced to flee their homes to neighboring Bangladesh because of the violence incidents, forming the fastest evolving refugee crisis in the world. The surge overwhelmed the Bengali authorities, so Bhasan Char, a difficult and uninhabited island, was planned as a new refugee settlement and refugees were forced to accept it. Based on this practical background, this project aims to build a new type of refugee living community to further improve the comfort, convenience and safety of living on the premise of ensuring the building capacity capacity. In addition, from the perspective of food and economic sources, rebuild the agricultural production system adapted to the local environmental conditions, the multi-level agricultural production system can adapt to the future erosion of the future islands and resist the harsh climate conditions.

MAN-NATURAL ENSEMBLE CAST A Natural Educational Park in a Former Military Airfield Site Location: Debert, Nova Scotia, Canada Type: University Studio Project Individual Work Date: 2021.09 - 2021.12 Author: Kunyuan Chu Academic Course Name: LARC 4001 - LANDSCAPE STUDIO 1 Studio Instructor: Richard leBrasseur, PhD r.lebrasseur@dal.ca Professional office: Department of Plant, Food, and Environmental Sciences, Dalhousie University

The project is ready to reinvent Debert Airport as a large park with a total design area of about 3.5km² with three runways. The design concept focuses on the relationship between humanity and the natural world, with the main goal of making connections between them by using multi-line narrative techniques. The main idea is to make nature remediation as the way to teach people and their mind and attitude of man-nature relationship. Getting inspiration from the film shooting techniques, the park is turned into an ensemble cast. The story has four protagonists in the story, people, water, land and forest, the four story lines have their own independent parts with different types of endings, and where multiple story lines overlap is about the mutual influences between the protagonists of these independent story lines, positive or negative.

Debert Airport is a former military airfield located in Debert, Nova Scotia, Canada. Located in the central-western part of Colchester County, Debert Airport has a good traffic accessibility, is adjacent to larger communities within the Debert area, and the highway makes it easily accessible from the larger nearby towns. The area where Debert Airport is located now was nothing but forest and farmland before the construction in 1940. Most of forests were cleaned, only the south is partially forested by the Acadian forest, with wetland areas providing habitats for migrating waterfowl and other aniimals. In the forest area, varied soil types supporting blueberry and forestry activity exist. Meanwhile, the highly compacted and disturbed soil in the airport area leads to poor drainage, and makes the water be vulnerable to contamination.

Water naturally flows southward towards MacElmon’s Pond. A river passed through this area is cut off by the construction of the airport. An excessive amount of old, wasted, impermeable surfaces creates lots of polluted water runoff.

STRATEGY

CONCEPT EVOLUTION

This project service and benefit object are both human and nature, aims to make ecological remediation as the way to teach people and their mind and attitude of man-nature relationship. The main concept of design is the connection of human use with the natural development process by multi-line narrative techniques, and make the park into an ensemble cast. The story has four protagonists in the story, people, water, land and forest, each protagonist has its own separate story line. The four story lines have their own independent parts, and where multiple story lines overlap is about the mutual influences between the protagonists of these independent story lines, positive or negative. The design and function of each important section echo its theme, giving people different psychological feelings through the design, and indicating the positive or negative ending of the story line.

Destressing Box Park Design for Middle-aged People A Landscape Micro-experiment on the "Mid-Life Crisis"

The midlife crisis has become an increasingly serious social problem in China, mainly among men aged 40-60, who experience various levels and crises such as career, health, family and marriage in this stage of life. Under high pressure, it is difficult for these people to find a suitable way or opportunity to relieve the pressure from their suffocating lives. The middle-age group of happiness is extremely low, and the high intensity of work and the psychological pressure that cannot be discharged also cause physical and mental health problems. Based on this social topic, the project mainly aims to design an urban pocket park as a place isolated from real life for middle-aged groups to relieve their stress and escape from suffocating lives for a while in their fragmentation time. The core of the design is the intervention experiment of the landscape function in the user's psychological mood, that is, whether the human emotional intervention can be realized through the landscape design.

Site Location: Jinan, Shandong Provinve, China Type: Individual Work Date: 2020.12 - 2021.02

In China, the midlife crisis has become an increasingly serious social problem, especially for developed cities. Pressure from social, economic and family aspects has brought their happiness to a trough, and too many external constraints make them have nowhere to vent their emotions and express their sufferings. High intensity of work and uncontrollable psychological stress make their lives become suffocating, and can also gradually cause some physical and mental health problems. The site is located in the newly developed CBD area of the provincial capital of Jinan, as a necessary place between the surrounding dense office buildings and one of the largest residential areas in the city, and has extremely convenient transportation accessibility. Around the site, middle-aged people, as the target group, have a large number and frequent activities.

CONTEXT

The middle life crisis, also known as "grey middle age", generally occurs in men between 35 and 60, is also known as "man forty syndrome" in China. In a broad sense, it refers to the various levels and crises such as career, health, family and marriage that people may experience in this stage of life. That is, the physiological and behavioral inadaptation and psychological imbalance of individuals in the middle age. • •

The collapse of middle-aged people are always quietly. Even wailing in the midnight, in the next morning they have to clean themselves up and go to work as usual, talk and laugh as if nothing had happened.

There are too many people they have to take care of, and too many responsibility to take on. All the difficult days, all rely on themselves, but middle-aged people also need the understanding and comfort of others.

I selected some of my software works for competitions and exercises from 2019 to 2021. I enjoy making different types of renderings and often try various styles of drawings out of personal interest. In my spare time hand painting is one of my interests, and the process of painting makes me feel relaxed and calm. I love sketches and watercolours, and I like to go outdoors to randomly sketch something that can attract my attention.
