Engagement Team

An entertaining morning from the En "The re-launch was a great way to promote ‘what we do’ to the other teams in MHA. Not only did people take in what we do but they’re now thinking of how we can link up and work together. We have had loads of referrals and ideas from the conversations we had and we’re looking forward to continuing these conversations!"

Emily Townsend Engagement Officer 4

Here are a selection of “Pickles” that you have awarded to your colleagues recently: Cath Murray has ‘pickled’ Kristian Chard for… "helping me with: 1 – Storage of new Computer in the Community laptop delivery. 2 – For converting one of my tenants CV’s into a Word document that we can work on."

Roll Up

ngagement Team

Mariam Elmirghani has ‘pickled’ Nadine Fletcher for… "covering a complex case in the Housing and Wellbeing Project while another team member is unwell. Although you make it look easy, I know that it really isn’t! Thank you very much." Domini Barnes has ‘pickled’ Gary O’Rourke for… "being so versatile and accommodating. Thank you for your help and support today." Mariam Elmirghani has ‘pickled’ Chanelle Baker for… "covering the Tenancy Coaching Project cases while we undergo recruitment. I am sure it hasn’t been easy, but you’ve done a good job." Emma Parry has ‘pickled’ Jacob Richards, Vicky Ferris and Ben Hennessy for… "helping and contributing to the success of the Homesearch Plas Mawr coffee morning on 1st December." Do you think your colleagues should be recognised for their additional work efforts? Going above and beyond customer expectation and showing a good service. Then award them a pickle via In House. A prize will be awarded to the employee with the most deserved pickles during the quarter. 5

Cook's Ten Car Maintenance Tips By Nathan Cook 1. Tyres – Check your tyre pressure and the condition of your tyres regularly. If the tyre pressure is low make sure that you top the air up. If your tyres are damaged or are showing signs of wear make sure that you get them changed. 2. Oil – You should check your oil levels frequently, especially if you are planning on travelling a long distance. Make sure that you top your oil up if it’s running low so that your engine carries on running smoothly. If you seem to be putting a lot of oil in your car it’s worth getting it checked out at your local garage. 3. Screen Wash – Check your screen wash levels frequently and top it up if required. Make sure that you use screen wash that won’t freeze. Did you know that you must have a working screen wash system by law? 4. Windscreen – Check your windscreen regularly for damage and make sure that you have any stone chips repaired. If any chips are left it could lead to your windscreen cracking. 5. Engine Coolant – Check your coolant levels frequently when your engine is cold. Don’t let your coolant level go below the low mark, always top it up so that it’s in between the min and max mark. 6

6. Windscreen Wipers – Check your windscreen wipers frequently to make sure that they aren’t damaged. If they’re damaged, replace them! If the wipers aren’t damaged but only smudging on the windscreen don’t be too hasty in replacing them. Try putting some vinegar on a piece of cloth and wiping the blades. Quite often this will remove any dirt that is on the wiper blades and they will no longer smudge. Make sure that the vinegar doesn’t go on the paintwork of your car though! 7. Lights – Check all of your lights regularly. If any of the bulbs aren’t working you need to replace them. 8. Servicing – Make sure that you book your car in for a service every year. Not only will this help your car to run smoothly and efficiently, but it will also increase the partex value / resale value of your car. 9. Damage to bodywork – Avoid rusting! Check your car regularly for any damage to the bodywork. If you find any damage make sure you get it repaired as damaged panels could start to rust if not repaired. 10. Protecting the bodywork – To help protect the bodywork of your car it’s worth putting a coat of wax on it after washing the car. A car normally needs a coat of wax approximately 3-4 times a year.

Ohio By Emma Assender

It’s not your usual US based holiday destination, but Ohio surprisingly has a bit of everything you could want in a vacation: a freshwater coast, great food, cities, beautiful countryside, coffee and sport - there is pretty much something for everyone. My base was with a friend living in the north west of the state and initially we explored the local area because I couldn’t go far as I was expecting Fed-Ex to deliver my errant luggage (last seen at the wrong gate in Boston Airport). Initial explorations took in Kent the local university town, which boasts an impressive number of bars presumably for the student population and Scribbles Coffee serving all manner of concoctions including my firm favourite; a Turmeric Latte – peak hipster, I know! The streets even have swings so you can chill out and enjoy the local black squirrels while sipping on your brew. Hudson, another local town is very

quaint with colonial style housing and more coffee shops to while away your time waiting for your suitcase to make it from Boston to Newark to ‘home’. I visited at the end of September and hit the sweet spot between the end of the baseball season and the start of the NFL season (it’s like rugby but with bubble wrap and don’t let anyone tell you different). Cleveland boasts two impressive stadiums: Progressive Field where the Cleveland Indians play; and the imaginatively named FirstEnergy Stadium, known locally as The Mistake-On-The-Lake, because let’s face it, the Browns aren’t exactly going to make it to the Superbowl this year. Next year doesn’t look good either... However, Browns fans are the most dedicated, passionate bunch of people and walking into the stadium on a sunny day is the nearest thing I’ve ever imagined a Roman amphitheatre to be like. 73,200 roaring, barking (the Browns’ mascot is a dog) fans is both impressive and intense! Baseball, on the other hand is a more relaxed affair and the Indians 9

Cleveland’s a pretty cool city; it’s big enough to feel like the iconic American city but small enough to be friendly with small neighbourhoods like Little Italy where Presti’s Bakery serves the best pastries you’re likely to get outside of actual Italy. There’s no shortage of bars, playing live music or rooftop clubs with terraces that give you views across the city. Helpfully the ‘local delicacy’ is the Moscow Mule: vodka and ginger warm you up in the bracing lake breezes - if you do brave the terrace. They come in a copper mug which feels kind of hardcore - along with the lake breezes. You can even check out a preserved WW2 Submarine, the USS Cod if you want to get nautical. There are also boat cruises that will happily serve you a beer while you sail around the harbour and up the Cuyahoga.

north – a huge freshwater lake with nature reserves and islands to Hocking Hills National Park in the south, you can boat, swim, hike and kayak around to your heart’s content. A lot of my explorations took place around the Cuyahoga River which twists its way through the north west of the state. The geology is made up of sandstone which in many areas became eroded by glacial waters creating the most incredible curved gorges that you can walk through and explore. The waterfall systems are something else too. Think Hobbits and Middle Earth and you’ve caught the drift. If you’re a train fan you can take the Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railroad – a megalithic old diesel engine that runs up and down the Cuyahoga Valley taking in pretty views of the river from Independence in the north through to Akron 25 miles south. You can take a bicycle and use the stops to explore the river and canal, or you can enjoy wine tasting on board.

If you like the outdoors there’s no shortage of that in Ohio – and it’s pretty varied; from Lake Erie in the

Other places worth visiting, especially in the fall are Holden Arboretum, where you can climb the

Emergent Tower to get a panoramic view of the 600 acre site high above the tree canopy; 360 degrees of stunning leaf colour, or if you prefer something closer to the ground staff create corn mazes which are a big thing in the area. So basically a maze made out of corn – just watch out for the scarecrows! If you’re a wine lover, the Geneva area just on the lakes is worth spending a day or two exploring: it’s Ohio’s wine region and there are vineyards dotted about everywhere – some have restaurants and tasting menus so if you can’t decide on which wine to choose you can pretty much try them all. It’s worth stopping at Inn on the Lake where you can sit out overlooking Lake Erie while enjoying some pretty good wine – and some food to help soak up the grapes. A fleeting visit to Columbus in the south east of Ohio will also provide an opportunity to visit the legendary Schmidt’s Sausage House in German Village. It’s everything it promises to be (unless you’re thinking Dachshunds) with great traditional German potato salad, schnitzel and sausage on the menu and their specialty, massive cream puffs - after a plate of bratwurst it’s a feat of endurance polishing off one of those! It’s just as well that there are so many outdoor activities so that you can burn off all those calories!

Why not say hello to all the new starters on

Jason Thomas Social Inclusion Support Officer My name is Jason Thomas and I’m the new social inclusion support officer. Previously I worked at a funeral directors. Outside of work I love spending time with my son, dog and two cats. I’m hoping to start my masters degree in September.

Who would you like to be stuck in a lift with and why? Helena Smith from Inclusion as I made her my work wife and as divorce is not an option I have to name her if I want to stay alive!

Julian Evans Maintenance Officer I first joined the housing association sector in 1994, when I worked as a maintenance officer for Gwerin Housing Association (Melin Homes). I have worked in the sector ever since. I always studied part time in my roles and gained a BSc in Building Surveying from the University of Glamorgan. In my spare time I enjoy hiking, watching movies and box sets and soaking up the culture on holidays. I was born and raised in Ynysybwl near Pontypridd, but I now live in Gilwern with my partner Nicky.

Who would you like to be stuck in a lift with and why? I would like to be stuck in a lift with Clint Eastwood, as long as he didn’t smoke one of his cigars. I have always enjoyed watching his films from the early spaghetti western days.

Jeremy Baker Head of Development Hello everyone. I qualified as a surveyor in 1988 having studied at Bristol Poly and I have been in the profession ever since mainly as a developer/contractor. I am married to Lydia and we have six children. I enjoy coaching football and watching my children compete in their various activities including football.

Who would you like to be stuck in a lift with and why? As I have had the experience of being stuck in a lift overnight, on my own, on a site in London, I would want to be stuck with Silvio Napoli. He is the Chairman of Schindler Group and would more than likely know who to call to get us released. 14

RECIPE Valentine’s Biscuits Good Food magazine

Ingredients • 300g plain flour, plus a little extra for dusting • 200g salted butter, diced • 120g golden caster sugar • 2 large egg yolks • 2 tsp vanilla extract • ½ tsp rosewater, or 25g/1oz freeze-dried raspberries, whizzed to a powder • Red or pink food colouring Method 1. Tip the flour and butter into a food processor and whizz to fine crumbs. Add the sugar and yolks then whizz to a smooth dough. Remove one-third of the dough, add vanilla to what’s left and pulse to whizz in. Wrap this dough in cling film and leave at room temperature. 2. Put the reserved dough back in the processor with the rosewater or dried raspberries, if using, and a drop of food colouring. Pulse and add more colouring to achieve an intense colour. If the dough has become too soft, pulse in a few spoonfuls more flour until a similar consistency to the vanilla dough. Put the dough in the fridge, remembering to remove it 30 mins before you need to roll it out. 3. Thickly roll out the coloured dough between baking parchment. Use a small 3-4cm heart cutter to stamp out hearts. Keep re-rolling and stamping until all the dough is used. Line up hearts on top of each other and press to form a cylinder, taking care to retain the heart shape. Wrap in cling film and freeze for 3 hrs until solid. 4. When the heart dough is hard, roll the vanilla dough, using your hands, into 3 cylinders the length of the heart stack. Stick one to each ‘side’ of the hearts, pat together to form a fat cylinder, then gently roll on your work surface until it completely encircles the coloured dough, with the frozen heart dough hidden in the centre. Chill for 2 hrs. 5. Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Use a sharp knife to slice the log into 1cm-thick discs. Place on trays lined with baking parchment, allowing space for spreading, and bake for 20 mins. Cool on wire racks. Will keep for up to 4 days in an airtight container.

GEMS Staff Suggestion Scheme

Suggestion Status If you have a suggestion and would like to be in with a chance of winning ÂŁ50, please complete a GEMS form via In House. Instead of the expensive sanitary towel/tampon machines in the ladies toilets, have a small collection of towels and tampons available for staff to use if they are caught without and a collection box to go to either the MHA chosen charity or to purchase toiletries to go to our foodbank collection in the foyer. We could provide a donation, suggestion of say 20p. Proceeds go to restock the collection and any profit goes to the charity. Declined For reception staff to wear a top with MHA logo. Declined I have an idea that will try and help with people going off sick. I think if some one does not have a sick day from when their holiday starts to the renewal the following year they should be rewarded with extra holidays for the following year. It gives incentive and it's rewarding to the people who never go off sick. Declined
