Community Center
SURF-LAS PALMAS COMMUNITY ROOM
A 1500sf. Community Center commissioned by Citizens Housing Corp.for two low-income housing developments. The facility acts as a multi-purpose space for functions including meetings, various social activities, lectures, and temporary daycare facilities. The court and the transparent faรงade allows the community space to overflow into and activate the street. The simplicity of the volume maximizes budget constraint while allowing a more dynamic facade to engage the courtyard in front.

Residential / Mixed Use
1406 SAN PABLO LOFTS The design of a 11,000sf mixed-use building, with eight high-end residencital units in a gentrifying neighborhood of West Berkeley. This urban infill project addresses the mixed-use character of the neighborhood with strorefront, live/work and residential spaces combined into an L-shaped layout. The design offers a range of different unit types (studio, one- and two-bedrooms units) with special features, including one ADA-accessible unit, four live/ work units with ground-floor office spaces, two store-front live/work units, and private decks, united in a cohesive, modern architectural language. Project completed under Rempel-Lao Architects.

Residential/Mixed Use
MARKET STREET LIVE/WORK
The project is located in a redevelopment area of West Oakland. The site fronts Market Street, a major northsouth thoroughfare with an eclectic collection of warehouses, Victorian homes, and small commercial shops. The property contains an existing singlestory concrete block structure set back from the street. The client, an artisan/craftsman relocating from New York, desired a mixeduse development to include a small residence for him and his young family, workspace and exhibit for his business, and additional leasable commercial space. The design straddles the existing single-story concrete structure with two double-story buildings in front and behind, literally ‘filling’ the site. The disparate structures are linked by a multifunctioning, metal lattice with movable screens and shelves that provide display, storage and access. The project’s material expression is reflective of both the surrounding context and the modest budget of the project – unfinished cast concrete walls, unfinished cedar wood and metal siding, and aluminum windows.

TENTH STREET LOFTS
This 7600sf loft complex maximizes tight site dimensions, organizing five 1500-sf units one behind the other while dividing the bulk of the project into three distinct ‘towers’ hovering above a continuous base. The staggered compactness retains sunlight and views for adjacent residences. The roof of the ground-level podium serves as elevated courtyards for each unit. Building materials include metal siding and roofs, to reflect the character of the mixed residential and industrial history of the area. Project completed under Rempel-Lao Architects.
