Lycée Carriat, BOURG EN BRESSE, France Barrutialde BHI, ARRATZU, Spain Colegiul National "Coriolan Brediceanu", LUGOJ, Romania Lycée Notre Dame des Dunes, DUNKERQUE, France SO Zenit, TURNHOUT, Belgium Guilsborough School, NORTHAMPTON, United Kingdom

In this project, students exchanged coded messages in English. They learnt and applied different techniques of cryptography. They used maths tools and algorithms to cipher and decipher messages and became real codebreakers. They learnt about ciphers and codes' cultural and historical aspects. Through the messages, they discovered about other cultures. At the end of the project they wrote games and puzzles to test their partners' knowledge. This Puzzle Book is the result of their work. http://new-twinspace.etwinning.net/web/p84416/welcome

Game 2 Crossword from Lycée Carriat, BOURG-EN-BRESSE, France

Across: 1 The person who writes the message (Mathilde) 4 You need them to count (Antoine & Marouane) 7 Synonym of hide (Mathilde) 9 It’s a protection for a basic message (Nolan) 10 It’s the practice and study of techniques for secure communication in the presence of third parties. (Simon) 11 This kind of cipher is a pretty basic type of code : every letter is replaced with a drawing, colour, picture, number, symbol or another type of letter. (Laurène) 12 This cipher uses a Caesar cipher with a different shift at each position in the text ; the value of the shift is defined using a repeating keyword. (Onur)

Down: 1 It is the art of concealment: its purpose is to pass an unnoticed message in another message. (Amaurie) 2 The action of decrypting a message (Jonas) 3 The thing we can use to resolve some ciphers. (Philippe) 5 The action of crypting a message (Jonas) 6 Make something invisible (Mathilde) 8 Visual representations of things. (Coline) 10 This cipher is one of the simplest and most widely known encryption techniques. It is a type of substitution cipher in which each letter in the plaintext is replaced by a letter some fixed number of positions down the alphabet. (Manon)

Game 3 Gap-fill from Lycée Carriat, BOURG-EN-BRESSE, France DECODE THESE FOUR MESSAGES AND DISCOVER THEIR GLOBAL MEANING Your first message is BRX It has been encrypted with the Caesar cipher shift +3. What is the plaintext? _____________________ Your second message is HYL H NVVK. It has been encrypted with a Caesar cipher but you don't know the shift. What is the plain text? _____________________ Your third message is XLWVYIVZPVI. It has been encryted with the Atbash cipher.

What is the plain text? _____________________

Your fourth message is 23-5-12-12 4-15-14-5. It has been encrypted by a basic number code.

What is the plain text? _____________________

SOME WELL-KNOWN SUBSTITUTION CIPHERS  

What is the name of the code which uses dots and dashes? ______________________ What is the name of the code used by the blind and the visually impaired? __________________

The ______________________ square is a table that allows someone to translate letters into numbers.

The ______________________ cipher was used by Freemasons.

ALL THESE CIPHERS ARE SUBSTITUTION CIPHERS The problem with these ciphers is that they are easy to __________________ using ___________________ analysis.

Game 8 Hidden Words from "Coriolan Brediceanu", LUGOJ, Romania For each question the answer is a code. You should find 6 codes:  characters are small rectangular blocks called cells that contain tiny palpable bumps called raised dots……  Is a simple geometric substitution cipher which exchanges letters for symbols which are fragments of a grid…..  is a method of transmitting text information as a series of on-off tones, lights, or clicks that can be directly understood by a skilled listener or observer without special equipment…..  is a type of monoalphabetic substitution cipher, wherein each letter in an alphabet is mapped to its numeric equivalent, encrypted using a simple mathematical function, and converted back to a letter…..  is a method of encrypting alphabetic text by using a series of different Caesar ciphers based on the letters of a keyword. It is a simple form of polyalphabetic substitution.  is a method of encoding by which units of plaintext are replaced with ciphertext, according to a regular system; the "units" may be single letters (the most common), pairs of letters, triplets of letters, mixtures of the above, and so forth. The receiver deciphers the text by performing an inverse substitution.
