Hello, and a huge welcome to Freshers’ Week 2013 at Glasgow University Union, and hiya from us here in the GUUi! You are genuinely the object of jealousy for thousands of second, third and fourth year students, let alone all those sad sad graduates, whom all wish they could be a carefree fresher once more. So make sure you don’t waste a minute of this week and do EVERYTHING you possibly can! The best week of your life awaits! While we recommend you try out both student unions and lots of different activities during your FW13 experience, we have to tell you that we have the most amazing line up at GUU this year, which quite frankly blows everyone else’s efforts out of the water. From amazing DJs like Radio 1’s Jameela Jamil to fantastic bands like We Were Promised Jetpacks, the Freshers’ Week Debate to Al Fresco Open Mic, our Big All Day Games Event (B.A.D.G.E) to

our first ever Comic-Con and so much more, we have something to get involved in for absolutely everyone. Even you! Plus if you want to have a knees-up or just a few beers, we have the legendary Beer Bar open all week, right at the heart of the Union. Keep up to date with what’s going on this week in our posters and leaflets papering campus, on Facebook at facebook. com/GUUnion, on Twitter @ GUUnion, and on our brand new mobile-app by typing myapp.is/guufreshers into your web browser. There’s no excuse for missing out! So what are you waiting for? Grab your friends, old and new, that weird flatmate no one likes and the mature student from the floor above, and get down here ASAP. The booths in the Beer Bar are filling up. We’ll see you soon. Lots of love The GUUi

WE WERE PRO Freshers’ 2013 at the GUU prom-
ises to be a week of excitement and insanity with music from world renowned DJs and some of Scotland’s best bands as its soundtrack. We Were Promised Jetpacks, an indie guitar band from Edinburgh, will take to the stage tonight at 8pm in the Debates Chamber for a special performance as one of the stars of GUU Freshers’ Week. Their performing style is usually described relatively simply: loud, fast and fun. Whether you like to be jumping around at the front, spilling your pint of fun and singing your heart out, or watching appreciatively from the back, these guys will put on a show that you won’t want to miss. The four man band, made up of Adam Thompson (vocals and guitar), Michael Palmer (guitar), Sean Smith (bass) and Darren Lackie (drums) have two albums full of fast paced tracks which beg to be turned up until the neighbours complain. In both records the influence of fellow Scottish bands on the Edinburgh based group are -5-
evident. Frightened Rabbit, Admiral Fallow and Biffy Clyro have all been named by the band as artists who have inspired their music. They are a band that would be absolutely unmissable at a festival, or Freshers’ Week of course! With uptempo choruses and climactic crescendos, they are exactly what you need from a live band. Their songs are dense, layered with heavy guitar, drums and intense lyrics, from the simple and persistent refrains of ‘Quiet Little Voices’, to the sinister drawl which cloaks their latest single, ‘Medicine’. Listen out for the raw guitar sparkling with the unusual chime of a xylophone - the calm before the storm in ‘Thunder and
OMISED JETPACKS Lightning’ (couldn’t resist the pun, sorry) which gradually builds to a to a euphoric, crowd pleasing peak. We Were Promised Jetpacks are coming to the GUU after an impressive summer which included a Bon Jovi support slot, performing at festivals in Germany and the Netherlands and both a US and UK tour. yet? There’s more...
Impressed
If one superb Scottish band wasn’t enough to get you dancing through the doors of the GUU, well then how about two? We Were Promised Jetpacks will be supported by Poor Things, a Glaswegian band who describe themselves as ‘bubblegum rock’. Naming influences Follow us: twitter.com/guuimagazine
from The Velvet Underground to Nirvana, their feel good melodies resonate with a summery feel. Songs from their new release ‘Hurricane Poor Things’, such as ‘Ice Cream’ will transport you right back to the beach. With the acclaimed status of being a UNESCO City of Music, Glasgow hosts around 130 gigs per week and has over ten festivals per year. These bands showcase the stunning standard of local talent and are a delicious taster of what you will experience if you embrace the extensive music scene that Glasgow has to offer. For the rest of the year Mondays are going to mean back to lectures, back to labs, back to the library, but this Monday you should head back to somewhere much more exciting, the GUU. Join us tonight for an exciting, fast paced and energetic show that will kick start your time at University the right way. -Kate Whitaker -6-

10 Reasons We Love Jameela Jamil Radio 1 presenter, journalist and DJ will be hitting the decks at our very own GUU tonight. Find out exactly why she is the type of girl you want to share a pint of fun with...
1) When she DJs she brings out all the old school classics – expect to hear all the tunes you loved long before you were old enough to dance to them in a club. R Kelly’s Ignition is sure to be the floor filler of the night. 2) She got in trouble from the big bosses at Radio 1 when she referred to Alicia Key’s song Girl on Fire as the official cysititis anthem. 3) In true GUU style she belives that a good night has to end with a chippy. 4) Jameela descibes her career choice as “one big elaborate ruse to meet Beyonce”. 5) She once presented a segment with T4 on the Beach called ‘Catch Crabs from Jameela’ where she got to throw actual crabs at Jason Derulo’s crotch. 6) Her essential top 3 party hits include Run the World by Beyonce, Party Up by DMX and Outta Space by The Prodigy. 7) She is down to earth – literally. When Radio 1 announced she was to be the first ever solo female presenter of the chart show she fell straight off her chair and split open her knee. 8) She loves requests and hates pretentious DJs – she enjoys playing what the people want to hear and “see them get their bump ‘n’ grind on”. 9) But she still likes to promote up and coming artists. Her latest favourites include Lianne La Havas and Khushi. 10) Her ringtone is still Drop it Like it’s Hot. Nuff said. -Kirsty McKenzie

GUU Overheard Be careful guys- the walls have ears... What’s your name? Just call me Jack Wills. You have a boyfriend? Why are we having this conversation then? There definitely aren’t enough E numbers in these new WKDs. I can’t pull you so I don’t want to speak to you but could you
lend me some money for a pint?
Jokes Of The Day In order to ward off any post-alcohol blues we’ll provide you with a couple of hilarious (ly awful) jokes. What’s red and bad for your teeth? A brick. What did the dyslexic Mexican say to the girl at the bar? Grab your taco you’ve pulled. Follow us: twitter.com/guuimagazine
