of this world experience at the GUSA party last night. Many of you will have probably woken up covered head to toe in glitter, embrace it because tonight is going to shine! You guys are genuinely the object of jealousy for thousands of second, third and fourth year students, let alone all those sad sad graduates, who all wish they could be a carefree fresher once more. So make sure you don’t waste a minute of this week and do EVERYTHING you possibly can! This is going to be one of the best weeks of your life. While we recommend you try out both student unions and lots of different activities during your FW13 experience, we have to tell you that we have the most amazing line up at GUU this year, which quite frankly blows everyone else’s efforts out of the water. From amazing DJs like Scotland’s own Hostage to fantastic bands like The Youth and The Young. Exciting events from The Freshers’ -3-
Week Debate to the 10 Hour Superhero Party and so much more, we have something to get involved in for absolutely everyone. Even you. And if you want to have a kneesup or just a few beers, we have the legendary Beer Bar open all week, right at the heart of the Union. An Afternoon With Scottish Literature: 3pm, Bridie Library
Come meet Professor of Scottish Literature, Alan Riach, and awardwinning novelist Louise Welsh as they discuss the culture of Scottish Literature at our very own Glasgow University.
Dodgeball: 6pm, Debates Chamber
Bring four of your toughest and roughest mates down to compete in our Dodgeball tournament. Just remember the 5 Ds of Dodgeball and you’ll be grand.

Scotland: The Best Sma We have got it good in Scotland - we’re bloody geniuses. We’ve given the world Robert Burns, Irn Bru, TV, men in skirts, gingers, the best Bond, whiskey, Calvin Harris, the author of Sherlock Holmes, T in the Park and Andy Murray. On top of that no one can party better than Scotland. We gave the world the ultimate party banger “Auld Lang Syne” - so universally agreed to be a tune that you’ll struggle to pass a new year without some legless lunatic grabbing your arm and yelling old Rabbie’s song in your face. If you don’t believe me that no one can stomp their feet louder or raise their glasses higher than the Scots then come along to the union tonight where we will be showcasing the best that all Scottish culture has to offer. For the first time ever at the union we will be dedicating an entire night to Scottish writers and music and you’re not going to want to miss it! Kicking off the night, we have talks from the award winning crime writer Louise Welsh and Professor of Scottish Literature Alan Riach
– both a true asset to Scottish Culture. These talks are a rare chance to hear experts in their fields discuss the inspirations and importance of literature past and present. Up next, the music. The Scottish music scene has a distinct and riotous personality. From folk to rock we’ve made our mark with miserable, hopeful, euphoric anthems sung with thick accents and a beats so loud we can’t help but forget about any rain outside. Emeli Sandi may rule the airwaves and Frightened Rabbit have left our shores to go and crack America but we still have countless bands and artists foot stomping and crowd surfing outside the limelight and under the radar. Thanks to these bands, Glasgow has gained a reputation for having one of the world’s most exciting music scenes. These acts are producing raw, exciting and unashamedly uplifting music that could only have been made in Scotland. Dante are exactly that. Hailed by Nic Galloway as ‘balsy folk music’ this band are sure to get your

all Country In The World feet stomping at the union tonight with their infectious mix of indie and folk music. Having worked with Frightened Rabbits’ guitarist Andy Monaghan on their debut album, their sound is a great example of why the Scottish music scene is so electric. If new music and fresh talent is your thing, tonight at the union is not to be missed. Similarly destined for big things and also playing tonight is the Youth and the Young. Combining rock, folk and indie influances, this band is certainly one to watch. Their uplifting songs are undeniably the soundtrack to another great evening at the union. Last but not least The Emerald Armada, a band that derive from Belfast but whos Celtic roots blend the best of the Scottish and Irish music scene. “a ram packed room with people who just want to party”. So grab your pints and head along – these three bands are sure not to disappoint. And we also have a ceilidh on. For those of you who have never been to one- it is possible going to be one of the most fun nights you will have all year. The chance to attempt a Gay Gordons with hunners of strangers will doubtless leave you with loads of new pals. And those of you who are experienced ceilidh dancers; get down and teach the rest what it’s all about. To finish off the night we have a local house DJ named Hostage who is going to have you raving your head off until the end of the night. Dodgeball Picture
this. It’s Thursday afternoon. You’re shattered from a good five nights out on the trot. You’re not sure you’ve ever been this hungover, or you’ve come down with the dreaded Freshers’ flu. You just need something to pep you up, to put you in good stead for the Ceilidh later, because we all know how much energy a ceilidh requires. Who wouldn’t want that pick-me-up to involve a team of five attempting to pelt you with big (potentially orange) balls? A great man once said ‘if you can dodge a wench, you can dodge a ball’... Luckily, we won’t be testing this theory out. But we have got everyone’s favourite sport to cure your GUSA hangover from

the previous night. And let’s be honest, there is no better way to mend yourself then to run about the mighty Debates Chamber throwing yourself out of the way of flying balls. Games Committee love their balls. Assemble a team, get yourself a ridiculous uniform and use all your wit to think of a banging team name. (Even if you’re terrible you’ll get mad props for either of these things). We can’t promise you’ll win, but it’s sure to be a great early evening. Dodge, dip, dive aaaand dodge your way to victory.
