NEIGHBORHOOD: Presidio ZONING: Flex

IAD 440 CLAIRE HAYDEL

The site location in historical Presidio yields an excellent opportunity for a commercial space. The former military post is a hub for outdoor recreation and the nearby attractions offer mental enrichment for a range of age groups. Favorable views are on the north and south of the building. Open, green spaces enhance beauty and increase happiness. Views of these outdoor spaces provide visual stimulation without overwhelming users. The east yields a sweeping view of surrounding buildings.

FALL 2020 // COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN 08

02

The combined demographics of Presidio and surrounding areas promote the success of the project, as the arts and leisurely attractions are concentrated within the area. Factors including median age, income, and proximity to a number of neighborhoods render the chosen site as a gainful opportunity for the proposed retail, cafe, and exhibition space within the National Geographics Corporate Headquarters. The area’s composition of parks, schools, and entertainment lends a hand to enhancing activity levels and provides opportunity for mental enrichment. Nearby options for transit ease commute for employees. Just outside of major hubs of San Francisco, the site offers historic charm alongside the modernity of urban living.

CONCEPT: JUXTAPOSITION

TWO ELEMENTS PLACED IN CLOSE PROXIMITY TO ONE ANOTHER FOR CONTRASTING EFFECT

FALL 2020 // COMPREHENSIVE DESIGN 10

National Geographic embraces a juxtaposition of cultures and nature. Its values of heritage and spirit of environmentalism offer an intimate look into the lives of both people and animals. The imagery captures an adjacency of sharpness and softness, a vivid sense of culture, and nature that is unrelenting.

Summers are long and hot, with temperatures averaging 78 - 103 F May through September. The cooler months are on average 10 degrees cooler than the yearly average of 78 F. Prolonged rainfall opposes the largest threat to the area. With the Mississippi River less than 1 mile away, the site has a higher risk of flooding. Humidity control is of the highest concern. Sustainable Considerations • Moisture control systems and materials should be adjacent to living spaces. • Topiaries and climbing plants added on the east and west to enhance views.

FALL 2019// SOCIAL DESIGN 24

The demographics paired with site surrounding lend a hand to lower noise levels. Main noise concerns are the northernmost area of the building. Views of the adjacent great oaks can be enjoyed via balcony access. Together these enhance independence and improve quality of life.

DESIGNING FOR MEMORY CARE CHARTER, SYLVANIA, OHIO, OH

FEATURES º Large-scale elements for wayfinding º Unique signange for memory of place and association º Attractive yet calming colors associated with unique areas PRECEDENT The racetrack concept relieves any tendency to wander, as is prevalent in memory-related diseases. Under this concept, the patient is given space to wander, but the path always leads back to where they began. WAYFINDING Certain aspects of the space should provide sensory ques that aid in memory response. Texture can be utilized in order to bring attention to a space and to invoke memory-responses. When utilizing scale, it is essential to enlarge and associate; I.E.large-scale objects or room elements should be associated with the purpose of its designated room or area. Similarly, when utilizing color, materials in high contrast to one another should be avoided.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN LevelIAD 1 -410 CLAIRE HAYDEL Respect is given to ADA compliance, in seating arrangements and accessibility in the dining area, as well as communal spaces. The location of the dining hall in the northernmost area of the first floor allows for separation of public spaces, while remaining open to the front entrance, adjoined by the bar. A centrally located reading room allows for pause, while maintaining openness. Likewise, the community areas provide for ease of circulation. Level 2 All units are studios. The layout of each unity intends to provide privacy while maintaining a circulation that is compliant to the individual needs of seniors. Circulation in the hallways invites wandering and wayfinding elements such as lighting, floor patterns, and signage prevents residents from getting lost. CLAIRE HAYDEL 31

COMMERCIAL DESIGN PROJEC T:

Tony Riviera’s restaurant and demo cooking space located in Mission Bay, San Francisco, CA

C O N C E P T : Vast//Industrialism P R O G R A M : The approximate 10,000 SF design houses a bar/restaurant with commercial kitchen, and a demonstration kitchen open to the public. The project offers value and is complementary to the evolution of Mission Bay. OBJECTIVE: Adhering to sustaianble guidelines while addressing sustainability and creating community within the heart of San Francisco. Aesthetics promote feelings of escapism whilst addressing the need for community. Elements such as mesh screening and concrete applications embrace this transparency and are meditative of the concept.. All FF&E can sustain high-traffic and are selected to contribute towards LEED. Rooms include a demo kitchen, private dining room, a main dining area with bar, 3 staff offices, and a commercial kitchen.

SPRING 2019 // COMMERCIAL DESIGN 42

ELEMENTS:

CLIENT The proposed design for Tony Riviera’s restaurant and demo kitchen offers a space that is valuable and complimentary to the evolution of Mission Bay. Its name, “The Lamb Handle”, is suggestive of vastness achieved through variety and application of materials that engage users while remaining reminiscent of the history of industrialism. FORM: Separation of spaces, created by utilizing pockets promotes calmness, invites exploration, and incites a sense of wonder. FUNCTION: Furnishings promote ergonomics and are chosen with universal design in mind. ECONOMY: A unity of man-made versus natural materials allows for sustainability and an extended life of both structure and furniture. TIME: Furnishings are lightweight and the chosen partition materials provide interchangeability should expansion occur.

STYLE Futurism meets industrial, to achieve a design that maintains an approachable aesthetic to the general populus of the neighborhood while remaining unique. A rich composition of glass, metals, woods, and upholstery aim to nurture variety in composition of the design, while creating unity. The color palette achieves unity through its composition of dark hues versus light metallics. Custom pieces provide visual weight. Concrete and steel benches with leather application located adjacent to a floor-to-ceiling window for a pleasing experience that avoids a tightknit feeling while in the waiting area. Likewise, the rhythmic placement of weightier pieces throughout the dining area aims to enhance comfort. Steel mesh with wood-look wall applications allows for a breathiness in the design amidst the rich array of metals, concrete, and leather materials offers a contrast that invites a wandering eye. Mixed furniture forms, especially in that of the seating arrangements in the dining area, create variety and movement throughout the space. Placement of artificial lighting seeks to highlight focus areas while providing unity in the overall design composition. Daylighting enhances the design composition in the demonstration kitchen. It is kept at a minimum in the lounge area andincreases throughout the rest of the dining room. Color pairing of the demonstration kitchen furniture compliment the mixed woods, veneer, and silver steel accents of the casework and allow for visual interest without distraction.
