what is hair? Like finger nails, hair is made up of a dead protein known as keratin. The root of each hair is located in a follicle, which is embedded in the skin and nourished by the blood vessels in the dermis. We generally have 100,000 – 150,000 hairs on our head and lose an average of approximately 30 hairs a day. It grows 10mm per month and tends to grow faster in the warmer months. The hard, scaly outer layer of the hair shaft is tailed to the cuticle and is made up of overlapping scales that protect the hair from loss of moisture.
“Smooth, overlapping scales means healthy, glossy hair.” The cuticle can be damaged by harsh chemical treatments, incorrect brushing, wind, sun, blow-drying or poor diet. The damaged cuticle lifts away from the hair shaft, allowing essential moisture to evaporate, leaving the hair dull, coarse and brittle. Hair that is showing signs of damage should be treated gently. Apply good quality conditioning treatments regularly and select brushes and combs carefully. Immediate help can be achieved through correct brushing to distribute natural oils. Hair is at its most delicate when wet, as it stretches
when being combed and can easily snap or break, resulting in split ends. Wet combing and detangling must be handled very carefully to avoid damage. Beautiful hair can be achieved by eating a balanced diet with lots of leafy vegetables, correct cleansing and conditioning, and a good quality brush.

caring for your hair Shampoo & Conditioning Hints & Tips
Remember when Grandma use to say “100 brush strokes a day will keep your hair in good condition” well it’s true! Brushing your hair before shampooing will help dislodge any dry scalp, assist blood circulation and distribute natural oils down the hair shaft protecting it from further damage throughout the shampooing process. It is also important to match the shampoo and conditioner you use to your hair type. Your hair stylist can prescribe what would best suit you and your lifestyle. And remember, good shampoo does not lather much, so don’t be shocked! When its time to shampoo, you only need to use a SMALL amount of solution - enough to cover a 20 cent piece. But the best tip is to shampoo it TWICE to ensure all the grime is washed away. When it comes to shampooing, quality is more important than quantity! Conditioner, if selected correctly, will also only require a small amount. If you feel your hair needs more, it may require a little extra TLC. Opt for a treatment program or a leave-in conditioner that complements your shampoo program.
Hair Treatments: Today there are
countless types of treatments available for all kinds of hair problems. The 2 main treatment types are PROTEIN for strength and MOISTURE for dryness. Once again, your hair stylist can prescribe the right treatment for you depending on the condition of your hair.
Colour Care: The best way to
maintain your colour is to keep your hair in optimum condition. It is very important to select a professional shampoo and conditioner designed for your hair colour needs. It’s also a good idea to regularly treat your hair with colour and moisture specific treatments. Tip: A good styling product will also stop colour fade. When blow-drying coloured hair, Mita Ceramic Brushes are the best tools to use. They will reduce further damage, smooth down the hair cuticle and help maintain a high level of condition in the hair leaving hair shinier and prolonging the life of your colour.
How often to Cut: The average
time between cuts is every six weeks. However, if you use superior hair products, have a quality haircut and use the best brushes and styling aids, this can be stretched to twelve weeks. Any longer than this, your hair will start splitting. Instead of going to the hairdressers for a trim you’ll be getting it cut! 2
whats
HOT this season
pump up hair volume Curls, curls and more curls! This season, revamping long straight locks with a mix of old and new tricks will update any look. The key to creating volume in a hairstyle is to lift the roots. • Select a section of hair, roll it on a Mita Radial Brush, and pull it to the sky. • Place the hair dryer above your hair and dry while keeping the hair dryer moving. Negative ions are in the bristles to prevent flyaways, static and hair breakage while brushing. The end result: MAXIMUM OOMPH!
in the fashion world ? Think volume and curls. Volume to add texture and bounce, curls to add a hint of glamour. But not just any curls but perfectly sculpted curls placed seductively in an updo style or cascading down for a natural day look. Elegant hair styles that are highly accessorised will make a come-back, making the most of the textured styles. But remember shine and structure will be the deciding factor on how HOT you look.

Go for Loose Sexy Waves This is what style is all about, very sexy, very NOW! • Step 1. Blow dry hair using a large Mita Ceramic Radial Brush, focusing on the root area until hair is almost dry. Tip: For best results, use thermal styling spray in the hair before drying. • Step 2. Once drying is complete randomly section pieces of hair on either sides and place large Velcro Rollers, starting from the tips working your way up to the roots. To secure, twist the ends of the rollers around each other. Run the dryer over the rollers for 3-5 minutes and then allow them to cool. • Step 3. Once cool, unravel the rollers and gently run fingers through the curls to separate. • Step 4. Finish with a small amount of styling aid. Flip hair up-side down and light spray some hair spray. •
It’s so easy anyone can do it!

ultra sexy bed hair in minutes This style is a must-have for those with wavy hair or for those who are after bed-head hair. For those with curly hair: Blow dry hair using a medium or large Mita Ceramic Radial Brush until a soft wave is achieved. For those with straight hair: Blow dry hair using a medium or large Mita Ceramic Radial Brush, focusing on the root area, until hair is almost dry. Then set hair in Self Holding Rollers, medium for the front and large for the back. Run the dryer over the rollers for 3-5 minutes and allow them to cool. Once cooled unravel the rollers and gently run fingers through the curls to separate. Tip: For best results, section hair prior to setting. This is where the fun begins! Pick up large sections of the hair behind the ear and roughly twist (similar to a French Roll) and pin hair back with Mita Bobby Pins. Repeat until the desired look is achieved. Tip: Make sure that you leave plenty of slack on top to create a wave

how to recreate 1920s intensity Hairstyles of the 1920s created more controversy in hair fashion than in any other period. One hairstyle in particular, known simply as ‘the bob’, would be at the centre of this great debate. By 1921, following the lead of fashion designer ‘Coco’ Chanel and actresses Clara Bow and Louise Brooks, young women everywhere took the plunge and began bobbing their hair.
STEP 2. Section your hair starting from the base using Mita Section Clips. Blow dry in sections starting from the base of the hairline to the top layers, finishing with the fringe. STEP 3. Whilst blow drying your hair, tightly roll the brush inwards to give a sleek rounded finish. Ensure the section is smooth before starting on the next. STEP 4. Finish the style with a high shine gloss.
STEP 1. Blow dry your hair to 1920s perfection with the Mita Deluxe Ceramic Radial Brush in medium. Negative ions are infused into the brush’s bristles to smooth hair, prevent fly-aways and add extra shine. 8
how to recreate 1930s allure There was an economic depression in the 1930s that brought a re-evaluation of one’s way of life, and women were less financially secure than they had ever been. In a world where no one was working, women had only one thing to fall back on - marriage, preferably to someone solvent. The independent woman of the ‘20s was supplanted in the 1930s with someone softer, and more traditionally feminine. There were husbands to catch, and frightened men run fast. STEP 1. Start with wet hair. Apply hair wax to make hair more pliable. Create finger waves easily with the
Mita General Purpose Comb. Use the comb to create the first ridge, and hold the ridge in place with Mita Contoured Bobby Pins. STEP 2. Leave an inch or two then use the comb to sculpt the next wave. Use your finger to push the hair onto your scalp and pin it in place. Continue this for the length of your hair. Emphasise the waves by using your fingers on each ridge to apply pressure to the head. STEP 3. Cover with hair spray and heat with a hair dryer. STEP 4. Remove the bobby pins. STEP 5. For a softer look, gently brush out with a Mita Boar Bristle Brush. 9
how to recreate 1940s rolls Rolling your hair was probably the most important detail to any 1940s hairstyle. The point every 40s woman was trying to get across with rolled and pinned hair was femininity. The effort it took her to achieve this womanly 40s hairstyle was well worth it.
STEP 3. Roll the end of the pony tail into two more Mita Self Hold Rollers until the hair reaches the top of your head. STEP 4. Remove rollers carefully, reposition the curls using the Mita Tail Comb and secure into place with Mita Contoured Bobby Pins.
STEP 1. Use a Mita Tail Comb to section off the top half of your hair and tightly roll onto two medium Mita Self Hold Rollers. Wind the rollers inwards and leave to set. STEP 2. Pull the rest of your hair into a high pony tail using the Mita Active Elastics and smooth the hair using the Mita Natural Grooming Porcupine Cushion Brush. 10
how to recreate 1950s glamour By the 1950s, glamour became popular and women attempted to achieve a look that implied ‘domestic goddess’.
Step 2. Wind a section of hair at a time around the Mita Self Hold roller, tucking the ends under with a Mita tail comb. Continue this from the nape of the neck to the top of the head.
Women aspired to achieve the impression that all household chores could be accomplished whilst still looking stylish and well groomed. Hair was generally soft and curly, often short and imaginative. Hair often resembled a perfect helment and women started to visit salons on a weekly basis for the ‘shampoo and set’.
Step 3. Blast with a hair dryer and leave to set. Step 4. Gently unwind the rollers and comb through with a Mita Volumising Comb.
Step 1. Section your hair starting at the base of the neck using Mita Section Clips.

how to recreate 1960s elegance Contrary to what you may believe, the 1960s hair style was just that - styled. Whether long, straight, curly or fuzzy, a great deal of attention was paid to getting just the right look. Hair was everywhere from Audrey Hepburn short, to long blonde shoulder length, to Dusty Springfield beehives, hippy unkemptness and back to short again with Mary Quant. The beehive remains an enduring symbol of 1960s kitsch. STEP 1. Separate a sweeping side part, and then use the Mita Tail Comb to tease the rest of your hair - make it as big as you can! Hairspray will help hold the volume.
STEP 2. Lightly brush over the outside of your hair with the Mita Natural Grooming Porcupine Pad Brush to create a smooth effect without reducing the volume. STEP 3. Hold your hair in a pony tail, twist loosely anticlockwise and twist up to the right. Secure your roll with Mita Bobby Pins and Hair Pins. STEP 4. Use the Tail Comb to tuck in any excess hair from the roll and the Pad Brush to smooth over and finish the look.

how to recreate 1970s seduction During the 1970s, personal expression was the key to a great hair style. Groovy looks explored personal values and individuality rather than society’s expectations. Long, free and natural best describes hair in the 1970’s. Manes of freefalling curls, soft partings and long fringes were complemented by bronzed skin and glossy lips.

how to recreate 1990s romance During the 1990s, hair and beauty styles were constantly changing and a huge fad was the ‘Rachel’ (Jennifer Aniston’s character in ‘Friends’) hair-cut. The hair was long and sleek with longer length layers, a ‘grown-out’ fringe and framed with highlights around the face.
Extra Large Self Hold Rollers. Starting at the hair ends, wind hair onto the rollers. Blast with the hair dryer and unwind to achieve a more defined curl. STEP 5. how to recreate 2000s chic In the beginning of the 2000 decade, women’s hair was characteristically long and straight.
