Introduction

? ? ? ?

Spring 2015 at St. Norbert College I decided to become an art minor and as a result I had to take Introduction to Design. Not having taken an art class for many years, I had no idea what to expect coming into this class. I thought there would be a lot of color usage but unfortunately the color had gone missing. Here is the story behind the struggle and challenges of this class, but also the rewards and accomplishements, that came along too.

D*School Crash Course

D*School Crash Course is an excersise that was excecuted on the first day of class. It was a multistep excersise that was designed to help us learn the process of working with a client to identify and come up with a solution to a problem that they faced. We teamed up with another classmate and went through a packet, which first had us get to know each other and then identifying a problem our partner has based on what we have learned. Then it was our job to come up with a soloution to the problem. Engaging with another person led to thinking and empathizing with another person. I was tinking about their needs and wants instead of my own. So when it came to creating a prototype it was not something random and cool but something practical that my partner could use. Although going through each

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

? ? ? ?

individual step seemed repetative and a little confusing at times. This excercise was beneficial and a great way to begin the semester. Everything we learned this first day was used during the remainder of the semester whether we realized it or not. Each project we had to identify a problem and find a solution. Each time we had trials and error and had to keep tweeking until we got it right. This process can be applied to anything in life. Within science if you are doing an experiment you have a variation of this method. You can use this at work if you are working on improving operations, find a problem, generate ideas, pick one, go with it and see how it goes and revise if need be. Can do this when creating a prototype for a client seeing what they need, generating Ideas showing it to them etc. It is a standard general method to solving a problem.

The semester began with a project designed to challenge our abstract thinking. We were gien strict guidelines to follow in order to represent an emotion. The project restricted us to only certain combinations of circles and squares as well as a specific color pallet of black, white and grey. In this project we were introduced and challenged to use Gestalt’s principles in our work and to develop visual perceptions. He has five major principles which include similarity and anomally, whether the objects look similar or dissimilar to one another. Continuation in which the object

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

seems to continue onto another object. Closure where the object is not completely enclosed or complete but our visual perception sees it as complete. Then there is proximity, which refers to how close one object is to another. Finally figure and ground, in which the eye distinguishes the shape from the background. All three of these principles play with how an audience would percieve your work of art. By manipulating with the different principles the meaning behind simple objects, such as a line and circle can change meanings depending on where it is placed and its relationship with the other

?

objects. For the project I chose to represent stability, rejection, longing and exhaustion using dots and lines. It proved to be a challenge to create a relationship between lines and circles to create an emotional feeling. It required alot of abstract thinking as well as many sketches and third party opinions. When thinking of an emotion or a feeling, often thoughts of a facial expression, objects or colors will come to mind. The process to break down the word and break away from the symbols that we have associated with the it, and instead try to define it basic meaning is a challenge.

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Then having to represent it using two of the simpilist shapes, a circle and a line seemed next to an impossible task, especially the thought of creating a picture your peers would be able to understand as well. The project ended up being the challenge that was dreaded at the beginning, but by utilizing Gestalt’s principles of proximity, similarity, closure, figure ground and continuation, the meaning behind the picture shown through and made the project not as difficult. The most challenging part of the project surprisingly was not coming up with ideas but rather narrowing them down in order to find the best representation of the word.

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

Cutting perfectly round circles was irritatingly impossible as well. Cutting circles and perfectly straight lines is unbelievably difficult and time consuming. Many times I had contemplated just accepting the weird ovally shapes as circles but in the end decided to keep trying. I am very pleased I did not give up on the circles and took the extra time on the small details such as the roundness of the circles. By spending the extra to reach as close to perfection as possible leads to greater satisfaction and feeling of accomplishment. By taking the extra time I became closer and prouder of the final product.

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

This project ended up being a lot of fun. It involved a great deal of thinking, especially with the specific parameters that needed to be followed. It proved to be a challenge that in the end was very rewarding when looking at the completed work. Through this project I learned that you can express words with simple dots and lines in black and white. A complex picture is not needed in order for the message to be sent through. By playing around with proximity, uniformity, figure ground relationship, continuation and continuation a few objects are able to represent a infinite amount of words.

This project focused on hand lettering and typography. The goal fo this project was to express the meaning of a word through the way the word is portrayed. By emperimenting with different fonts and media would change the way the word is express and as a result would change the meaning of the word. Trying differnt methods and experimenting would eventually lead you to a successful and unique iteration of your chosen word. For this project I chose to represent drift. Before this project could even be started, one needed to take a step back and figure out what the word that they picked means and what objects, emotions or characteristics do we associate

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

with the word. In order to organize different ideas of the word, I created a word web in which I placed drift in the middle and surrounded it with words that I would associate with that word. Through this map I was able to generate ideas of how to go forward in expressing drift.

While working on the project I discoved that I prefer hand written lettering over digitally rendered lettering. Hand written has more of a personal feel to it. It send a stronger more powerful message that a digitally rendered word would as well. Through this process I learned hand lettering is hard and there are so many variations and possibilities out there. It was a challenge to get the letters to look and feel the same as the rest when hand writting a word. Trying to achieve the perfect spacing and sizes required rulers and guidelines as well as many redos. This seemed to be the toughest challenge with this project. Once I finished filling out my web, ideas started popping up on how to recreate some of these meanings. The hardest part was trying to narrow down which iteration was the strongest

If I were to continue to explore expressive typography I would explore other routes. I would work more with lower case letters and try and acheive higher quality pictures. I would also look into using different media other than pencil and photography. Maybe look into crayon or water colors, or various objects such as dandellion seeds. This project opened my eyes to the wide ranges of typography out there as well as the multitude of ways in which a word can be expressed. Not only expressed but how a single word can make you think of so many differnt meanings and ideas. Typography is an important method in how a word is interpreted and what meaning or feeling is being given off. I learned that color is not necessary element in order to send a message. You can send a message just as strongly in black and white.

Object Iteration

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

?

A continuation off of the previous two projects, in which we were looking for a deeper meaning behind words; In this project the task was to pick either an object or an animal and create a unique presentation of the object. The purpose of this task was to explore different medias and methods to represent an object. It challenged me to use my creativity to discover and create something new and out of the ordinary. Different forms of media and modes were assigned in which you had to figure out how to get represent your animal or

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

object by following those rules or objects. For my object iteration I chose to focus on the giant octopus. I learned that octopi are more difficult to draw than one would think. When picturing an octopus I would typically imagine a cartoon octopus with eight legs and big eyes. When you look at a real octopus there is so much more detail to them that I previously imagined. Trying to relay the idea of an octopus to an audience was a bit of a challenge. Octopi and squid apparently look pretty similar, so trying to create the distinction was difficult at times. Through the various media which was required for the object

iteration, the master artist proved to be the most challenging. One of the artist I decided to try and represent was Red Grooms who has a very unique style which includes a lot of detail as well as 3D items that were typically sculpted. When I first took a shot at creating something like his I focused on the detail aspect and trying to create a 3D image at the same time. The result was a nice illustration of an octopus but it was not screaming Red Grooms. Trying to figure out how to create something that could represent Grooms was difficult. I finally decided to sit down with some tin

? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

foil and see if I could first focus on the 3D sculpture aspect of his work and the results were very pleasing. Besides Grooms, I surprisingly found the abstract illustration to be difficult. Many of the octopi I that I though were cool looking some found it hard to interpret what it was I created. The one I was most proud of was mistaken a bit to be a squid instead of an octopus. By adding a middle body to the picture I was able to fix the problem and he was no longer mistaken for a squid. Another aspect that proved to be challenging is the inability to use color once again on a project. Color sometimes can be a prime indicator in what kind of animal is being presented. Without color focus has to be drawn toward the

detail of the animal and any unique characteristics it has. The media or form I enjoyed the most would have to be the text illustration. I had a lot of fun with that one and they were my most creative illustrations. In addition I am very pleased with my continuous line drawing. I was able to get at the flowiness of the octopus as well as the suckers on its tentacles I enjoy looking at that picture. If I had looked at refining and defining an octopus more I would definitely focus more on the tentacles. They are a very detailed and distinguishing part of an octopus and by focusing more attention on the tentacle I believe I could come up with something great. In addition I would focus more energy on 3D objects of octopi. I really enjoyed making Oswald, the tin foil octopus and taking it around campus, taking pictures in a variety of settings.

This project was done in collaboration with the Social Inequalities class at St. Norbert College. We were partnered up with another student and had to work with them to create a book. They ended up writting the story and we had to illustrate it. The purpose of this project was to gain experience in working with a client. Learning the difficulties of working with someone else and having to combine your ideas with their ideas to come to a happy medium. Working with a partner/ client is definitely different than from working one your own. You have to combine their vision with

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

your vision and then with your abilities. Sometimes that proved to be difficult and compromises had to be made. For the most part though my partner and I had the same ideas for the book. The challenge was bringing those ideas to life. Time management on this project proved to be hard. Dealing with two separate books and trying to spend the same amount of time on each was a challenge. In addition working with photo shop and indesign and just a mac computer in general proved to be a challenge. A person who grew up with PCs and always hating Apple products and then being forced to use one made for a few obstacles to jump over along the way.

I was not expecting the time commitment this project would take. It took longer than I expected and the project in general just seemed to jump out of nowhere. One moment we had months to work on it the next it was due in a few weeks. If I had to do this project over I would have started at least one book right away when I received the script and worked on it along with my other projects for this class. I would make sure to meet up face to face with all of my authors just to make sure we were on the same page or had the similar ideas. I would probably putz around with indesign and photoshop more because it proves to be a great time saver for

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

?

coloring and other minor or major fixes a picture may need. My sources of inspiration for this project were a mixture of visions in my head along with the visions of my partner. Looking at a varity of children’s book in the library as well as images on the internat proved to be helpful in getting an idea of what is out there and what seems to work and what does not. This project was a great learning experience. It was difficult and time consuming but like a lot of the projects in this class it pays off in the end. You end up with a product that you are proud of and want to share it with the rest of the world and have them be as excited s you are.

From this project I learned how to be more efficient in photoshop and indesign as well as learn what it is like to be an illustrator. Found out what it is like to illustrate a book that someone else wrote and the pressure that comes along with it. It was nice to finally be able to produce something with color. Although I learned it is not necessary to have color it is still nice to spruce up the work a little bit.

Final Remarks

? ? ? ? ?

Introduction to Design ended up being a very time consuming and at times frustration class due to the amount of work that was needed to be put into each project and just the sheer number of projects needing to be completed. With the hard work comes rewards, and I felt that throughout the class. The feeling of accomplishment after completing each of the assignments was a very rewarding feeling and made eachof the projects seem worth while in the end. If I had to take this class again I would start projects sooner and dig a little deeper into them. I would also splash a little more color in them as well....black and white is far too boring. In the end I found this class very worth while.
