M

ark DeMichael became Indiana Wesleyan University’s first full-time Athletic Director in July 2008. He took over the position after 11 seasons as the Wildcats’ head baseball coach and assistant professor in the Health, Kinesiology, Recreation and Sport Studies department. DeMichael has already put his stamp on Wildcat athletics. During his tenure, Indiana Wesleyan has secured a bid to host the NAIA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships and has started an annual Athletic Commissioning Service and the Athletic Scholarship Endowment Fund. The Wildcats reached seven NCCAA World Series during DeMichael’s tenure as baseball coach. Indiana Wesleyan earned runner-up in 2008 and garnered third place finishes in 1998, 2003 and 2005. DeMichael had three student-athletes sign professional contracts with Major League Baseball teams. He was NAIA Region VIII Baseball Chair and a member of the NAIA National Baseball Rules Committee and the NAIA National Tournament Procedures Committee. In the classroom, DeMichael was Program Coordinator for the Physical Education major. DeMichael came to Indiana Wesleyan from Eastern Nazarene College in Quincy, Massachusetts, from where he graduated in 1988. He was the head baseball coach of the Crusaders for three seasons from 1995-98 and was named Commonwealth Coast Conference Coach of the Year twice. Prior to Eastern Nazarene, DeMichael taught physical education in the San Bernardino, California public school system for six years and was head coach for their highschool baseball team from 1991-95. DeMichael and his wife Kimberly, who is an assistant professor of education at Indiana Wesleyan, have two daughters, Ashley and Kasey.

INDIANA WESELYAN UNIVERSITY

“COMMITTED TO CHANGING THE WORLD BY DEVELOPING STUDENTS IN CHARACTER, SCHOLARSHIP, AND LEADERSHIP.”

I

indiana Wesleyan University is an evangelical Christian Icomprehensive university that is committed to liberal arts and professional education. U.S. News & World Report ranks Indiana Wesleyan University as “one of the best Master’s universities in the Midwest.” Over 3,000 students live and learn in state-of-theart residence halls and academic facilities on IWU’s residential campus in Marion, Indiana. More than 80 majors are offered, covering everything from Art to Theology and Ministry. An increasing number of honors students on the residential campus has led to the formation of the John Wesley Honors College. Another 12,000 adult learners attend classes at regional IWU Education Centers in Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio, as well as through our online degree programs, including associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree offerings such as the Master of Education, certificates and electives. The innovative adult education program, which was established in 1985, has received national attention. Indiana Wesleyan University has been Indiana’s fastest growing university for the past two years. The University’s total enrollment, which now exceeds 15,000 students, makes IWU the largest private university in Indiana. One result of this growth has been the establishment of the IWU School of Nursing, a premier nursing school in its own right. In 2009, IWU introduced Wesley Seminary and in September 2013, the new Wesley Seminary Building was opened on the IWU Campus. Indiana Wesleyan University stands ready - with the resources and the passion - to equip future generations of learners with skill they will need to meet the challenges of our rapidly changing world.

THE IWU EXPERIENCE NOTHING LIKE IT. T

he experience our student athletes experience at Indiana Wesleyan University is one that cannot be replicated. Our teams travel across the globe, evangelize to the ends of the Earth, and compete against the best. Indiana Wesleyan Men’s basketball has had the opportunity to travel to New Zealand, Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic, Hawaii and many other incredible places to use our talents to glorify the Lord and worship through the game of basketball.

LUCKEY ARENA BRINGING THE ENERGY 2,400 SPECTATORS There is seating for 2,400 spectators in the arena which hosts men’s basketball, women’s basketball and volleyball teams. There is permanent seating on all four sides of the arena. A large concession area is located in the southwest corner of Luckey.

SINCE 1980 Luckey Arena is located in the Recreation and Wellness Center on the campus of Indiana Wesleyan University. The arena was built in 1980 and was a part of the $10 million renovation that took place in 1998-99 in the RWC.

"OUR CROWD IS AWESOME! PLAYING IN LUCKEY GIVES US A HUGE ADVANTAGE AT HOME BECAUSE OF THE 'LUNATICS'. WE ARE VERY THANKFUL FOR THE FANS AND STUDENTS!"

- GREG TONAGEL

THE CALEB DIMMICH LOCKER ROOM

Caleb Dimmich wore a Wildcat uniform from 1996-1999 and still holds three school records, the most notable being the 11 three point field goals he scored in one game. Caleb scored 1,158 points at IWU before his basketball career was shortened by a fatal farm accident in July of 1999. As impressive as his statistics are, they do not reflect the true legacy that Caleb left at Indiana Wesleyan University. “I Am Third” has become the philosophy of the IWU basketball program. It means putting God first, others second and oneself third in actions and attitude. Caleb exemplified that lifestyle, and it is no coincidence that he also wore #3 on his IWU basketball jersey. The Wildcat's men's basketball facilities are among the nation's best. The facility features a players lounge, a theme style meeting room, a nutrition center, and a first-class locker room designed to provide the student athletes with the necessary resources to perform at the highest level.

The Wildcat players lounge includes two 60-inch LCD TVs, an Xbox, custom seating as well as an expansive surround sound system that includes a charging dock for the players' iPads. The theatre style meeting room includes custom leather chairs with the IWU logo. This facilityy allows the Wildcats to go over scouting reports, study film, and have team devotions. The Wildcat locker room will be the heart of the facility. The Caleb Dimmich locker room features 18 custom-built and ventilated lockers, personalized nameplates, three 60 inch LCD TV's, a state of the art refueling station, and the ooring inlaid with the IWU logo.

THE

MAN'S CLUB CHAMPIONS PAY THE PRICE

The 'extra rep' is where strength gains are made. The 'extra' nutritional care you give your body maximizes those gains. These areas of pain and discipline separate the players in the Man's Club from those who simply 'train'. They have reached an elite level of strength by achieving each of the following.

SEASON PREVIEW WILDCATS READY TO RECLAIM A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

I

ndiana Wesleyan University men’s basketball will look quite different in 2017-18. Sixty-four percent of the scoring from last season is gone, including a pair of 2,000 point scorers in Lane Mahurin and Bob Peters.

The two seniors are the highest scoring returning players for Indiana Wesleyan. Tonagel will look to the pair for more than their numbers on the court as he needs their leadership with so much turnover.

The 2017 senior class is the most successful class in program history and it leaves with two national championships, a Fab Four appearance, and a national quarterfinal appearance. The class went 126-22 over the last four years. “There is a lot of turnover from last year,” said Wildcat head coach Greg Tonagel. “We lost some guys but also brought in many new faces. We are excited about the guys that have chosen to buy in and fully commit to each-other. I’m personally excited for the challenge of molding together new talent.”

“This past offseason our seniors blew it out of the water in the way the led our team,” added Tonagel. “I have the upmost respect for Ben and Jacob and how they carry themselves. The impact they leave with these young talented players will be a legacy for years to come.”

Highlighting the new look Wildcats is a pair of Indiana AllStars and a transfer from Kansas University. With the departure of the 2017 senior class the incoming class has the opportunity to make an immediate impact on the court. “We have two Indiana All-Stars in Kyle Mangas from Warsaw and Grant Smith from Connersville that are ready to produce from day one,” Tonagel said. “We have a Big 12 transfer from Kansas in Evan Maxwell in which we expect immediate contributions. The exciting thing is that all these guys are focused on making their teammates better.” Returning to Indiana Wesleyan for their senior seasons are Jacob Johnson and Ben Carlson. Johnson averaged 13.8 points and 4.3 rebounds while shooting 55.7-percent from the field whereas Carlson had a breakout campaign with 6.2 points, 4.2 rebounds, and a 65.3 field goal percentage off the bench.

Johnson and Carlson also fit the motto that Tonagel has set before the Wildcats in 2017-18, ‘Hunger-Habits-Humility.’ “This is what we sensed God was speaking to our team last season,” stated Tonagel. “It’s become a model for pursuing greatness. It starts with a hunger to grow. Along the way, we are shaped by our habits. We then take our success and point it towards others in an act of humility.” Despite a lot of change in personnel this season, Indiana Wesleyan continues to load the schedule up with great competition. IWU battles six different teams that played in last season’s NAIA National Championship in Point Lookout, Missouri. Three of those teams advanced to the Elite Eight in Bethel (Ind.), Cornerstone (Mich.), and IU East. “Every year we look forward to the CL/WHAC Challenge,” said Tonagel. “Cornerstone is coming off a national runnerup finish and Aquinas reached the national tournament. We always look forward to that Cornerstone game. The players are excited to travel to Puerto Rico in December for some games and beautiful scenery. And as always, the rugged Crossroads League schedule offers the greatest challenge in the NAIA.”

COACH TONAGEL PROFILE & BIO

Despite being a head coach for 12 seasons, Tonagel is already the winningest coach in the program’s history. He has the highest winning percentage (.784), most wins (330), most NAIA national tournament victories (24), most national tournament appearances (10), and most Crossroads League regular season championships (8). The former Valparaiso (Ind.) University point guard, known for his hard work and energy, has brought those characteristics to the basketball program. Tonagel was introduced as head men’s basketball coach on April 1, 2005. Drawing from experience gained from leading the Valparaiso Crusaders to four NCAA tournament appearances as a starting point guard, along with the tutelage of mentor Homer Drew, Tonagel has helped orchestrate a new era of Wildcat basketball. Known for defense, the Wildcats led the nation in scoring defense at 59 points per game at the completion of the 2006-07 regular season. They also ranked in the top ten in the nation in six defensive categories in the 2009-2010 season. Although it all starts on the defensive end for the Wildcats, an up-tempo, aggressive offensive style that utilizes skilled and creative play has rejuvenated Luckey Arena into a fantastic place to experience a basketball game. Tonagel and his staff have introduced an innovative offensive style that players want to be a part of and fans desire to see.

GREG TONAGEL | HEAD COACH 13TH SEASON

T

onagel and the Wildcats reached the summit in 2014 and 2016 as the program won two NAIA Division II national championships in three years. Indiana Wesleyan won the 2014 red banner in unprecedented fashion as they became the first team to win all five of their games at the national tournament by double digit. In 2016, Indiana Wesleyan defeated the top two seeds in the tournament to claim the title.Tonagel is a two-time NABC/NAIA Division II National Coach of the Year. In his 12 season as a head coach, Tonagel has already led Indiana Wesleyan to two national championships, one Final Four, five Elite Eight finishes, and eight Crossroads League regular season championships, including seven straight Indiana Wesleyan finished the 2013-14 and 2015-16 seasons as the No. 1-ranked team in NAIA Division II. Tonagel's teams have spent time in the NAIA top-five in each of the last 11 seasons.

Perhaps the biggest influence that Tonagel and the staff have had on the program is the work ethic that they have instilled on and off the court. Tonagel’s teams have passion and toughness. Whether it is writing a paper, helping a neighbor or working out in the gym, Tonagel demands commitment and 100-percent effort from each student-athlete. Greg and his wife, Amy, along with their four children Jace, William, and Allie and Riley reside in Marion. He is active in a number of organizations and causes, most notably his church.

lark helped lead Indiana Wesleyan to the 2014 and 2016 NAIA Division II National Championships. Indiana Wesleyan won the 2014 title in historic fashion as IWU became the first team to win all five national tournament games by double digits, capped by a 78-68 victory over Midland (Neb.).

Clark has been named the Indiana Basketball News top NAIA Assistant four times. He is involved in all phases of Wildcat basketball but focuses on post player development and game preparation, while also serving as the recruiting coordinator. Clark’s specialty is developing post players, and he was instrumental in the development of 1st Team All-American Zach Coverstone as well as the emergence of twotime, 2nd Team All-American Patrick Hopkins. Prior to joining the Wildcat coaching staff, Clark had a four-year basketball career at Anderson (Ind.) University where he was a two-year captain and was twice named to the Academic All-Conference team. Clark graduated magna cum laude from Anderson with a double major in Business Administration and Secondary Education. He completed his Masters of Science Management in February 2010 from Indiana Wesleyan. Clark and his wife Tiffany reside in Marion with their children Josh, Caleb, Luke, and Audrey.

Upon graduating from Indiana Wesleyan in 2014, Weidner was selected first overall in the NBL Canada draft by the Mississauga Power. In his rookie season he was a member of the All-Rookie Team. LEAGUE AFFILIATIONS NAIA Throughout it’s history, the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics has provided strong leadership for all aspects of intercollegiate sports. Since it’s introduction of collegiate sports, the NAIA has maintained the highest standards while administering first-rate athletic programs. With it’s major emphasis on educational development, it was natural for the NAIA to further strengthen academic eligibility requirements for the mid-1980’s. All NAIA student-athlete academic eligibility is monitored on a semester-by-semester basis. The All-American Scholar-Athletic program, a long standing NAIA tradition, recognizes junior and senior student athletes with minimum 3.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale. Since 1937, the NAIA has administered athletic programs and championships in proper balance with the overall collegiate educational experience. Servinghigher education in this manner is a responsibility the NAIA does not take lightly. It is a relationship built on confidence and trust strengthened year after year.

NCCAA The National Christian College Athletic Association is an association of Christ-centered collegiate institutions who’s mission is to use athletic competition as an integral component of education, evangelism, and encouragement. We serve our members by setting association standards, developing communication resources, providing regional/national competition, and partnering in outreach to our communities and the world.

CROSSROADS LEAGUE The Conference League, formerly known as the Mid-Central College Conference has the purpose and function to promote intercollegiate athletics in a well-rounded athletic program, maintain high ideals, and promote sportsmanship. Therefore, the Crossroads League encourages the member schools to stress the supporting role of athletics in the total education process and keep athletics in proper perspective.
