me a foundation in design. And also for letting me work on my design skills while I’m at work!
Introduction: Through out this semester I got the chance to find my footing in design. To really go after what I want to do for the rest of my life. In this book is work of my projects in my design class but also little things I did on the side. By taking this class I gained more confidence with my work, by showing it to others and being able to take constructive feedback. And lets not forget making one iteration, and then another and then another and then a handful more. This class has helped me think more like a designer and prepare me for the road ahead!
Object Iterations Objective: Expressing your skills by using different design styles on one object.
The thing I learned the most through out this process was that I had to break away from the typical circle head of a bear and the circle ears, eyes and nose. I learned they have more heart shaped heads. The bridge of their nose is every square almost prismatic, and their noses kind of looked like a sliced mushroom. The curved edges and then a small stump. At first the continuous line was a bit of a challenging media but ecame easier after a few iterations. The same thing applied to the collage iteration because I was having a hard time finding objects that fit with my grizzly bear. I got to take a more abstract approach with it after a few iterations. Looking at references has definetly helped complete this project.
Objective: Learn about typography which includes different type styles, there properties and the traditions of typography.
Letter Forms
I learned about how important kerning (the space between the letters) and leading (the space between lines) Even if you have one letter slightly farther left it throws the whole word off, same with leading. I got a better sense of how hand lettering works and how long the process is. Also its good t o have a lot of patience while working with hand lettering. You can’t rush it. And that it is also very hard to replicate the same thing twice. Somethings I had to work on was I getting the letters nice and dark when they were pressed, trying to eliminate the ‘saltyness’.
Objective: Learn how to use only text, what makes a successful layout and typography by letting the words speak for themselves.
PSA Poster At first it working with only text was ver challenging because I just wanted to add pictures in. My first draft I went all crazy, by tilting text and making weird textboxes to make up for the pictures I couldn’t have. After my second critique I changed my whole layout to let the words speak for themselves because that is what they should have been doing in the first place. I created a hierarchy by making the title bold and big and on the left hand side. Then I worked with the rest of the information by having it go from top to bottom then left to right. For the most important things I bolded or put a black textbox around. Using just
type is effective! Looking at other posters I know that less is sometimes better. For the poster I designed and the poster I gave to a designer, there was a lot of text with both! So knowing how to deal with that text and using hierarchies to accomplish that. But also in the future just put in the most important stuff! Make it big and legible! For PSA posters people only have a few seconds to look at it so make the most of it!

What is littering? Littering is a huge issue not only in America but in this world. It is filling our oceans and beaches and killing our wildlife. Not only is it affecting wildlife but also human health. Many feel that is is easy to litter because they already see trash on the ground so they feel it is okay to add to it is not okay. Steps to Prevent Littering 1. The first thing we can do as a community to prevent littering is to start off by educating each other and ourselves on what littering actually does to our planet. 2. Another thing we can do is to simply not be lazy! Recycling is one of the easiest things to do by throwing away your garbage and recycle.
3. Do a good thing today and clean up any litter you see. A harsh way to put an end to littering or to try and reduce it, would be to make a litter law. This would ensure that no litter is being thrown on the ground.

Dot Line Gestalt is the properties of a composition that make it successful. Like Figure ground, Similarity and Anomaly, Continuation, Closure, Proximity, Parnellism. This project I think showed my true designer at work because of the attention to details I showed. So I prefer not rushing things and get the little things just right. For some of my iterations I took the obvious ways of abstraction, like with rejection and creating a small group of dots huddled away from one other dot. And in scarcity I used smaller figures and fewer figures to convey that point. When working on my iterations I did let myself go and try to think more abstractly with those words and not have it be so sterotypical. I learned that sometimes less it more. And that you can convey something without physically writing or making it. That you can leave something more vague and leave it open to interpretation.

D-School Objective: To not spend too much time on one iteration. You can make multiple iterations and keep improvinb on the last one. Engaging with a real person for me is very helpful, when I went into the prototype stage I went in not knowing what I was going to come up with. After I talked with Professor Ries a light bulb went off and that’s when I figured out exactly what I was going to do. I am already a stickler about showing people my art, I just get very shy and nervous so do show something unfinished made me even more nervous and shy to what I had created. The pace was very quick, I felt like I was on an episode of Nailed It. I was running around trying to find the materials I needed and borrowing so many things from other people and trying to be patient when
someone was using something that I needed and needed/wanted it now. My normal pace is usually slow at least when it comes to my art making. I very take my time with things. I would want to just do a little design work, like continuing the same design on the back and adding a few more different elements like adding some drawings or stickers. I’m glad I kept the same idea and just ran with it. I like using tape as a design element and the rhinestones. I think they both added a cool feature.

Designer Presentation Looking just as his work drew me to my artist. Just the simple but bold designs is what got me. Most of them were logos and illustrations which is something I want to go into. As I did more research on Aaron he is a very down to earth guy. He is out there helping future designers, illustrators, or people who want to learn the trade. He tours for conventions and workshops, and writing a book. Through that he passes on his wisdom and knowledge. He keeps his business small and his passion an untamed fire. I do not like public speaking at all in class. When it’s in a small group I am more comfortable but I am usually very nervous. This time it was a bit easier because the class was smaller and I know the people better than I do in any other class. So that helped with bringing my nerves down. I am torn between Timothy Goodman and Jessica Walsh. They both were very different in their works but made it interesting. They both had strong messages in their work both relating to kindness and mental health, they were both basically very open about it in their work. They just had different takes on ordinary things.
Vocation Question: I do feel called to creative work. There are times where I think oh I’m not good enough or I will not make it in the design world. However after every project I do, it gives me confidence. I know I can make it in the design world and more so in the marketing world which I am aiming to go into. Throughout this semester I worked on side projects that have really fueled my creativity! I couldn’t have done any of these without my experience in the print center and my design class! Vocation Question: In between the hussel of school, work, and a social life I’ve put off creatvie work; until this semester I finally made time to it! The piece I am most proud of is my second acrylic painting which is of a woman in the rain. Usually I use pencil or pens as my main medium but I wanted to venture out and use paint. Acrylic paint is my favorite to work with beacuase of all the blending you can do with it and how you can make a scale of colors. This piece also reflected my emotions while I was painting it, I was not in a great spot in my life and just felt like I was in this constant storm. With school being crazy, balancing that and my part-time job, babysitting
and just life in general. It was a relief to express those emotions thorugh painting. It helped me work through those thoughts and emotions I was feeling for quite awhile. To put them on a canvas or paper or whatever I wanted was a way to realse them.
