Design Philosophy At the age of five, I developed a huge passion for Interior Design and even designed my own dream home to scale. Thankfully I was fortunate to have a mother who described herself as a "wanna-be" designer and a father who had a love for woodworking, and they encouraged me with my creative designs. They inspired me to have a passion for making things in life to be both beautiful and functional. My philosophy for design is to create a functional environment that is unique and personalized to the client's needs while also making it appealing to the eye. To achieve this, I like to incorporate a mix of design styles to create a custom environment. Claire Wiland

Education Revit, Adobe Photoshop Group Project
The Big Ten Student Design Challenge project required our team to use our knowledge as students to design an informal learning space within Ballantine Hall that accommodated the needs of students while upholding Indiana University Bloomington (IU) standards of timelessness and remaining consistent with the design and plans of the Ballantine Hall renovation. Our team was one of the top three finalists who won a trip to Herman Miller Headquarters where we spent two days working alongside academic and industry professionals to refine our proposals and pitch a polished version of our design for final judging.

Educational Revit, Adobe Photoshop, Enscape Individual
The Reed Magnet School studio project involved designing the 5th floor for grades 9-12. The school's integrated curriculum follows a Pedagogical Model, known as Connectivism. The design was required to provide a common space, science lab, small classroom (fitting up to 15 students), a large classroom (fitting up to 35 students), and restrooms; while ensuring the design meet all codes and regulations.

Commercial Project Revit, Adobe Photoshop Partner Project
The Wine and Dine is an interior lighting design project that required me to collaborate with my partner to create a wine retail store with an adjacent restaurant and create construction documents that support our concept and strategies. The intention behind our project was to use the layers of lighting - accent, ambient, and task - to provide sufficient lighting for dining while maintaining an intimate ambiance. The high contrast in the retail area highlights the items being sold in a visually pleasing and harmonious setting.

Rhino, Adobe Photoshop, Laser Cutter Partner Project
The Cardboard Sculpture was a studio project that required me to collaborate with my partner to produce a free-standing interior skin made completely of cardboard with the use of modularity, origami folds, and digital fabrication using a laser cutter. The main intention of our design was to design an interior skin in which a human could go inside and feel protected from the exterior agents. We decided to build a tunnel-like structure made uniquely of modular pyramids. The points of the pyramids convey a defensive shield.

DESIGN PROCESS Research McQueen’s design of the elaborate and dangerously high armadillo stiletto inspired us to consider using the shape of this shoe and incorporate a natural, animalistic mood into our design. The use of spikes in fashion originated in one of the earliest forms of armor with a protective quality. This lead us to want to make the structure of our design from pyramids so the tip of the triangles act as spikes to the design.
Schematic Design
Design Development When implementing our design we faced difficulty making it stand on its own, but with assistance from the Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) engineering students, we were able to successfully revise our prototype to be free-standing. We accomplished this goal by adding an additional column of pyramids (orange). Also, a structural column was added on the inside to evenly disperse the weight.

During my internship, selections were made for clients when redesigning their homes. The process included ensuring the accuracy of measurements, conversations with vendors about specifications, and research. The skills utilized during this project Revit, Adobe Photoshop, were sketching floor plans in Revit, creating furniture cut-outs, space-planning, and Adobe Indesign preparing presentations. A majority of the process was revolved around creating furniture cut-outs and trailing variations of space plans. Throughout the process, Individual influenced by our boss and clientele’s feedback. REED RENDERS HAND MAGNET SCHOOL

Commercial, Residential Adobe Photoshop Individual
Hand Renders: The Hand Renders are from an interior visualization course that required sketching existing spaces and using various color materials to create realistic characteristics of the provided space. The intention behind the different drawings was to learn a variety of presentation skills including freehand drawing techniques and digital editing techniques. The goal behind this project was to produce an interior scene or space to enhance the scene by digitally adding colors, gradients, and tones. This course gave me a better understanding of tonal drawing concepts such as perspectives, scale, tonal values, atmospheric depth, and light/shadow.
