CHRISTOPHER LALANDE WHO am i?
CONTACT
Hello all I’m Christopher, a newly graduated designer who has been studying the subject for several years and had an interest in it for even longer. My main interests in design include branding, layout and music graphics, as well as a passion for colour (that can be pretty obvious sometimes) and I enjoy experimenting with it in my work.

SKILLS My greatest skill sets lie within Photoshop and InDesign. I am highly skilled in photo editing and enhancing, as well as layout and typography. I am also highly skilled at using Muse, successfully using the program to create a website for my final course project. However I only have a basic knowledge of HTML and CSS. I also have a good knowledge of Illustrator and I am adept at working with vectors, however, I still have more to learn. As well as my digital skills, I also have a variety of physical skills such as working with ink, paint, paper and scalpels.

COLOURING MUSIC Inspired by my love of colour and music, I have combined the two by creating ColouringMusic.com, a website that allows users to submit songs with the colour they associate with it. The results are then displayed on the site, both overall and by genre to allow users to see other submissions. One of the most fascinating aspects of the website to me is the ability to study the results by genre, and determine whether people stereotype music genres by colour, such as a heavy use of pink for pop. In addition to these features, there is also a playlist embedded on every webpage, composed of songs submitted to the website. This playlist provides a soundtrack to the website and allows users to either compare existing results to the songs or to inspire them to submit their own results. There is also a page on colour meanings provided, allowing users to gain a greater understanding and compare it to their results. The website is also available in both phone and tablet formats, so anyone can submit on the go.
PAINTING LIGHT Continuing my experimentation of colour and music, I created a series of lights designed to be used as a physical interpretation of my website. I was inspired by a piece of work I had previously created in which I hand painted light bulbs in order to recreate a rainbow. I began experimenting with different means of colour and light, and was further inspired by the Light Show exhibition at the Hayward Gallery. After trialling different methods of colouring light, I decided on touch powered LED torches, coloured using a gel paint suitable for plastic that dries transparent, allowing the light to shine through. With the paint only available in red, yellow, green and blue, it proved to be another test in order to correctly mix the colours with various dyes while maintaining the correct consistency. However, despite this trial and error, I was eventually able to create a light box with nine options for users to choose from.

IT’S IN THE NAME Whilst experimenting with music and graphics, I began researching the importance of logos in music. A logo can act as a brand identity; however I was surprised to discover the number of logos certain artists have had throughout their careers. I began collecting these artists’ various logos, vectoring each one and creating posters representing a timeline of their logos and thus their careers. As a result of this, I came to the conclusion that in the music industry, the logo is less of a brand identity and more of an art piece in support of the artist and album. With this mind set assured, I decided to create art pieces by layering the vectored logos atop of each other, building a base before inverting the most recent logo. I found this only worked well for a few artists, as there needed to be a large number of logos to build a successful base. I also created one using multiple colours however, the effect did not work with other artists.
INNOCENT ENOUGH A live brief in which the brief invited us to launch a new range of soups by the brand Innocent, incorporating Innocent’s brand values while at the same time establishing the product as a separate item. After initially sticking too close to the original design and being too “innocent”, we developed an entirely new logo and design. However, so as not to completely separate ourselves from the original, we used the original font to give the product a sense of familiarity. As well as this, we incorporated the halo from the original Innocent logo into our bowl outline design as a subtle yet pleasant connection to the brand. We also incorporated a greater use of colour in comparison to Innocent’s use of stark white to distinguish the product more while maintaining its simplistic design.
VIRGIN In 2011 I entered into a live brief competition for Virgin, working with Hayley Kempen. The concept was to celebrate their forty-year history, in particular the twenty-fifth anniversary of Virgin Atlantic’s first flight from London to Miami. After some initial experimentation, we settled on a simplistic brochure, choosing to focus on a timeline of the company using logos from every business venture in the brand’s history, along with photographs and information on key companies. Our research into the various companies was very thorough, and during a presentation, a Virgin representative was impressed with our dedication. We were also required to create an info graphic celebrating Virgin Atlantic, for which we decided to create a poster that could also fold into a paper plane. We aligned the text with each fold of the paper and included fold lines, instructing users how to assemble the plane. We had a number of ideas of how this project could be taken further, such as creating interactive web versions of both the timeline and paper plane.
