Founded by W.R. Davies, at a meeting in his father’s house at 11 Queensdown Road, Clapton E5, August of 1877, Downs FC started playing on Hackney Downs. Three years later in 1880, and with a name change to Clapton Football Club, the Tons moved the short distance to North Mill Field, Leyton. Later that year the Tons were offered their first private enclosure at Elm Farm with a rental of £10 per year. They moved once more before settling at the Dog, to Pilgrims Farm, Walthamstow. It was the founding of the London FA that introduced Clapton FC to the Spotted Dog, The Tons played an LFA Cup match against City Albion who had a pitch in the field just north of the Dog. The tenants of the Dog were St Bartholemews Hospital who were about to vacate, so Clapton obtained a lease from the owner, Mrs Vause. It was a bold step, the rent was £35 a year, whilst the club’s annual income amounted to £40. The opening game at the Dog took place on the 29th September 1888 and the Clapton team beat a team from Old Carthusians by a goal to nil. The scorer was J.S. Sellars. The ground was a roped enclosure and the players changed in a barn in Upton Lane. Many games drew crowds of 4,000 or more, and several notable Ton’s players were recruited from those watching when numbers were short. In 1982 a Southern League game was the first league match ever to be played at the Dog. Before this, only friendly and cup matches had taken place. The brewers, Watneys took over the freehold of the ground and during the second world war the Dog became an anti-aircraft station. During these five years, Clapton played at Newbury Park, the home of Ilford FC. A crowd of 12,000 watched Clapton play Spurs in a cup tie in 1898 which resulted in a 1-1 draw. In more ‘recent’ times, a crowd of 2,000 witnessed an FA Amateur Cup match against Barnet in 1964. In 1992, the Clapton Trust managed to negotiate and finally secure, in 1995, a 99 year lease on the ground. This achievement should have secured the club’s future at the Old Spotted Dog, however, with Vince McBean at the helm, recent events and mismanagement have placed this security in jeopardy and these issues will need to be addressed to secure the club’s future once more. The ‘club membership’ is said to be closed since at least January 2013 and it is apparent that Clapton Football Clu b itslef is being used as a front for a proprietary club called Clapton Members Club which is run by Mr McBean. In truth, the Clapton Football Club that was founded in 1877, lies with the three existing life members of the original club, and the entity currently playing under the name of Clapton FC have no relation to the original cub, other than using it’s name so as to give advantage to other businesses and individuals. Things change.

CLAPTON v SPORTING BENGAL UNITED Essex Senior League Saturday 29th March 2014

This afternoon we welcome Sporting Bengal United to the Old Spotted Dog for what promises to be a entertaining match. In ding so, we particualrly welcome their manager, Mamum Chwdhury who has completed five years in charge. That is some feat at this level of football and certainly emphasises the positives of stability in retaining Managerial staff thus reaping the consequent loyalty from them. Congratulations to both Manager and Club. The writer will hope, however, that it is not quite as exciting as the match between the teams at the Mile End Stadium earlier this season when our visitors clawed themselves back from a 2-0 deficit at half time to take the points in a 3-2 victory. We Clapton supporters would not like to see a repeat of that and, coming into today’s game, we have every reason for optimism. Following three losses, Woodsy’s boys have reacted in the best way possible and notched two successive wins. Last Tuesday’s defeat of London Bari was particularly hard fought and the team showed plenty of character in holding on for the win. Local derbies are never an easy ride and today is our third one on the spin. Let’s hope we can make it a hat trick of wins. We have also had a couple of changed in playing personnel. Rafael Duyille has left the club to join Enfield 1893 and popular striker Nick Read. (he of the Alice band). has teamed up with Southend Manor. We thank them both for their efforts at Clapton and wish them well for the future. The revoving door of signings has seen some new faces in the squad. Ike Nzurba is here on loan from Hayes and Yeading. Ike has previously played for Cowdenbeath and Redbridge. David Fallah, who scored the second of our goals last Tuesday, was previously with Bowers & Pitsea. Finally, whilst our ‘guardian du but’ Pepe is in France, Cain Davis has joined us on loan from our friends at Wingate and Finchley. We welcome them all to the Dog and hope they enjoy their time with us. The League table makes very pleasant reading for Clapton fans this season. We currently hold a healthy mid table position and the 50 point ‘dream target’ is certainly a possibility. If that were to be achieved, then one can say that this has been a very successful season indeed and one upon which the team can build for next year. The publicity for the club that accompanied the Walter Tull anniversary was extremely welcome and our twitter feed information on Walter Tull and the iProg was retweeted no less that 150 times. Furthermore, the minutes silence that was impeccably observed before the match belied the ridiculous accusations as regards our supporters. Well done everyone and we will continue to promote awareness of Walter Tull, a real hero and a true patriot. Clapton scarves and badges are for sale as normal in the Scaffold stand. If you have one already, why not buy your Mum one for Mother’s Day. If you haven’t yet bought one, get with it tight-wad ! Next Saturday we take the short trip, once more, into Zone 4 to play local rivals Barking FC. We have already played the Blues in two games this season at the Dog, losing 0-1 in the FA Vase and then reversing the result a couple of months later when a Jerry Jarriette goal seperated the teams. Mayesbrook Park is situated in Lodge Avenue Dagenham and it would be great to see a Tons continigent n the crowd, cheering on Woodsy’s lads. So, onto today’s game. It promises to be good. Enjoy it !

The Bangladeshi community started to arrive in the UK during the 1960’s. Initially the community consisted of single men The 70’s saw the formation of small Bangladeshi communities throughout the UK. In London, like many other immigrant communities the East End became their home. However, there were very few sporting opportunities The 80’s saw the influx of Bangladeshi families. This resulted in a large Bangladeshi youth population and organisations were formed to cater for the needs of those young people. Through this, football teams began to be established The 90’s saw the development of these teams as they ventured into Sunday League football The Asian League offered an opportunity for these teams to compete against each other This resulted in an expansion of the number of teams in the community

HISTORY OF SPORTING BENGAL UNITED FC It all began with a football tour to Bangladesh in 1996 by a group of the best Bangladeshi players in London. There was realisation that talent was being wasted with the divisions that existed and that nothing had been achieved by individual teams. It was agreed that a selective team, consisting of all the best players in the community would form Sporting Bengal FC. The formation of Sporting Bengal required the need for co-ordination.

BANGLADESH FOOTBALL ASSOCIATION UK (BFA) It was further decided that a regulating body should be set up to co-ordinate the future of football within the East London community. This regulating body came in the shape of the Bangladesh Football Association (BFA), also established in 1996. Since then, the BFA has been increasing its activities and developing initiatives at a tremendous pace. There are currently 43 teams who are members of BFA. The current committee consists of 14 members, each of whom represents a different member club. We feel that this method provides good representation and ensures that the interests of the community are at the forefront of decision making. Although we have adopted the name Bangladesh Football Association, we encourage all members of the community to actively partake in our provisions. Working together with various partners, funders and sponsors, the BFA want to bring together the Asian community through sporting activities, primarily football. We are keen on taking a holistic approach so that an individual in our community, regardless of their age, gender, ethnic background or locality can feel part of the bigger sporting family through self-empowerment.

Sunday morning, and there is no better way to clear a beer clouded head than a stroll from the Gasthaus Fritzen to the FC Faid Sportplatz. And with the girls making their way into Cochem to pick up some gifts (while consuming cake and icecream) I’m freed up to watch a double header involving SG Faid and SG Hambuch. This is regional amateur football, although it has to be said the first team fixture was on par with any Essex Senior League encounter I’ve watched. The facilities too are impressive. Neat, tidy and supported by the local community with somewhere in the region of two hundred people adorning the touchline come the main event. But before that, Faid and Hambuch have a second team fixture to play out, and what it might lack in quality it more than makes up for in honest endeavour and drama. Faid are coached by a long-time friend of mine, Alexander Hein, last night he told me the team are struggling for numbers, I jovially inform him that my playing days are over, though I must admit I’m delighted to see he has a full complement as the temptation of one last game lingers long in the heart and mind, if not in the body. Thankfully, I’m able to take in the game from the touchline with my reporters pad and a Bitburger (well, when in Rome!). Early exchanges are frantic, and it’s not long before SG Faid’s Marcel Koblenz finds space and fires past SG Hambuch keeper Sebastian Kramer to give the home side the lead. And midway through the opening period it’s two. The unlucky Christian Wosnitza turning the ball into his own goal from close range. The visitor’s rally, a Christopher Marx’ strike is deflected past Faid keeper David Bracher, and Hambuch are back in the game. The second half takes on the same pattern. The impressive Jens Rudolf head’s home to extend Faid’s advantage but Andre Kastre turn’s in from close range to make it 3-2. The game continues to ebb and flow, Faid’s Kim Patrick Dohle is shown a second yellow card and sensing their chance, Hambuch swarm forward in search of a point saving goal. However, that man Rudolf has the final say, racing clear before beating Kramer with a low drive. Alexander is delighted at the end, “only for you Brian” he says to me as his elated charges leave the field. MATCH PREVIEW by Robin Cowan Clapton go into part three of their East London derby quadruple header having already taken maximum points against Newham counterparts, London APSA and London Bari. It’s Sporting Bengal’s turn to make the short trip to Forest Gate this Saturday. For those who were at the Mile End Stadium that night in late November, the image of the home ‘keeper (fat Brad Guzan) fist pumping in front of the main stand will no doubt still conjure up a moment’s anguish whenever anyone brings up the subject of our last encounter. Let’s not get too bogged down in the details. Despite losing out to Bengal last year, Clapton currently sit a comfortable eight points ahead of Saturday’s visitors. ‘Fortress Dog’ has seen The Tons only lose once at home since October. Stat fans will also be interested to know that the 44 points won so far this season is the most Clapton have achieved for the last 15, while wins amassed are their highest since 1997/98. Sporting Bengal reached their own milestone this week as manager, Mamun Chowdhury, celebrated five years in charge. Chowdhury won’t have to remind Clapton about the dangers of the ‘ESL Iniesta’, Sarfraz Pivano, although how much the tricky number 7 will enjoy negotiating the bobbles on the Old Spotted Dog pitch and the wall that is The Tons’ central midfield remains to be seen. Clapton will be without top scorer, Tom Jeffes, who’s back on Leyton Orient duties, although Ike Nzurba will be looking to continue an impressive start up front. Josh Coulson made his return from a lengthy layoff on Tuesday, marking it with a goal against London Bari. While on-loan Wingate goalkeeper Cain Davies (Senegal’s no 2) could stand in again for the absent Pepe. Following the massive success of Neil Day and Billy Wise’s money raising efforts for homeless causes earlier this month, we’re getting together again to collect for Newham Food bank. If you’re coming to the game on Saturday and have any spare tins/non-perishables in the back of the cupboard, bring them along and we’ll gladly pass them on. Ta!

JOIN THE FRIENDS OF CLAPTON FC Whilst the primary objectives of the Friends of Clapton FC was to help those who run, administer and play for the Tons, the entity that claims to be Clapton FC has neither acknowledged or accepted that the Friends group have a role to play in the future of the club and would prefer to continue in it’s present shambolic state. In the meantime, the Friends of Clapton remain vigilant as to any perceived problems, and of issues, such as tenure on the ground, that are not addressed by the ‘club’. For example, last year, the lease on the ground was only weeks away from forfeiture, due to mal administration by the self proclaimed 'club owner’. (Not filing accounts) The continuance and well-being of the club, the security of tenure at the Old Spotted Dog Ground and promotion of Clapton FC's activities in an open and forthright manner would re-establish the club in the world of football as well as the local community. However, this is not currently on the ‘club’s agenda’. We believe that Clapton Football Club is deserving of support and whose survival is important, not only to the local area, but also to the sport of association football, the development of which, owes much to the Clapton players, officials and supporters of yesteryear. Vince McBean’s Statement of February 2014. In a recent statement on www.claptonfc.com, Vince McBean, the club’s Chief Executive, as well as attempting to justify the sacking of Neil Day, alleged that he, and the club, were subject to defamatory statements and, at the same time, critcised the Friends of Clapton FC. Following this statement, we wrote to Mr McBean (recorded delivery letter to his three accommodation addresses) as follows : Obviously, I have read the statement that you published on www.claptonfc.com and, whilst there are a number of other matters that I would wish to address with you, there is one primary issue that requires immediate attention. This is your unequivocal allegation that I, or the Friends of Clapton, have ‘defamed’ you or what you perceive to be Clapton FC. In those circumstances, it is only correct that you inform me of each and every instance of this alleged wrong doing, upon which I will respond accordingly and, if necessary, take requisite action. Should you choose not provide me with the information then, by your inaction, you are permitting the supposed wrongdoing to continue and a reasonable conclusion can be drawn that your complaint is both frivolous and without foundation. Also, the cessation of dialogue, to which you refer in your statement, is not conducive towards a resolution to the matters at Clapton FC and, not least, the recent complaint. Therefore, I await your response with interest.

No reply has been received which would indicate that nothing we have written is defamatory and, in fact much of the information we impart is of public record. In truth, we believe Mr McBean is in no position to take action. We could reel off a number of other areas of concern to Clapton supporters, however, they are best left for now. Mr McBean also, to much amusement, defined the word ‘friend’ within his statement. Although the definition was correct, what he fails to grasp is that the friends of Clapton FC are exactly that, Friends of Clapton FC.  We are not friends with his Clapton Members Club or, any of the three limited companies used in the mal-administration of that organisation, whilst using the real club as a front.  We are not friends of the current membership of Newham Community Leisure Limited (they have recently dropped the word ‘Trust’ from their title) who hold the lease and who very nearly lost it last year by not filing accounts. We are friends, however, with the real Clapton FC, the club formed in 1877. The delusion statement also cited the Friends of Clapton as preventing the club from obtaining sponsorship. In April 2013, the Friends wrote to the club’s commercial manager, Esmond Syfox and offered to buy the club’s kit for the coming season. The response from Mr Syfox, copied to Mr McBean and the ‘club chairman, Mr John Murray-Smith was:

Therein might lie the answer as to why no one is prepared to sponsor Clapton Football Club, save for a few die hard supporters and individuals. The biggest problem in obtaining sponsorship for the club is the current structure and supposed leadership. In a week when Tony Benn’s funeral took place, we are reminded of one of his most famous quotes in dealing with those ruling by non democratic means :-

"What power have you got? Where did you get it from? In whose interests do you exercise it? To whom are you accountable? And how can we get rid of you?

Please sign the petition to award Walter Tull his posthumous Military Cross Walter was the first black outfield player in football's top flight and the first black soldier to become an infantry officer in the British army. 2nd Lieutenant Walter Daniel John Tull led his men on dangerous missions behind enemy lines and returned without loss or injury. For these acts of bravery, he was cited for his "gallantry and coolness" under fire by Major General Sir Sydney Lawford, his commanding officer and recommended for the Military Cross. Untypically, for officers with his service record and commendation, he never received it. Was it because he embodied a contradiction? The Manual of Military Law forbade men not of 'pure European descent' from becoming officers.
