Founded by W.R Davies (left), at a meeting in his father’s house at 11 Queensdown Road, Clapton E5, August of 1877, Downs FC started playing on Hackney Downs. Three years later in 1880, and with a name change to Clapton Football Club, the Tons moved the short distance to North Mill Field, Leyton. Later that year the Tons were offered their first private enclosure at Elm Farm with a rental of £10 per year. They moved once more before settling at the Dog, to Pilgrims Farm, Walthamstow. It was the founding of the London FA that introduced Clapton FC to the Spotted Dog, The Tons played an LFA Cup match against City Albion who had a pitch in the field just north of the Dog. The tenants of the Dog were St Bartholomew’s Hospital who were about to vacate, so Clapton obtained a lease from the owner, Mrs Vause. It was a bold step, the rent was £35 a year, whilst the club’s annual income amounted to £40. The opening game at the Dog took place on the 29th September 1888 and the Clapton team beat a team from Old Carthusians by a goal to nil. The scorer was J.S. Sellars. The ground was a roped enclosure and the players changed in a barn in Upton Lane. Many games drew crowds of 4,000 or more, and several notable Ton’s players were recruited from those watching when numbers were short. In 1892 a Southern League game was the first league match ever to be played at the Dog. Before this, only friendly and cup matches had taken place. The club continued to make strides and by the 1920s, Clapton were one of the foremost clubs in amateur football and won the FA Amateur Cup in five occasions. Over the years, numerous Clapton players have won international and county honours.

The brewers, Watneys took over the freehold of the ground and during the second world war the Dog became an antiaircraft station. During these five years, Clapton played at Newbury Park, the home of Ilford FC. A crowd of 12,000 watched Clapton play Spurs in a cup tie in 1898 which resulted in a 1-1 draw. In more ‘recent’ times, a crowd of 2,000 witnessed an FA Amateur Cup match against Barnet in 1964. In 1992, the Clapton Trust managed to negotiate and finally secure, in 1995, a 99 year lease on the ground. This achievement should have secured the club’s future at the Old Spotted Dog. However, the conduct of the lease holders (now with Vince McBean at the helm) has placed this security in jeopardy and is one of a number of issues that need to be addressed to secure the club’s future once more. In January 2013, when asked by the Friends of Clapton FC, the club chairman said that ‘membership’ of Clapton FC has been “closed for restructuring’. This situation apparently remains today. membership of the London FA of Clapton Members Club. There is no reason why there should be, it is not a football club.”

CLAPTON v BASILDON UNITED This is becoming something of a joke now. Another iProg prepared and ready to go, but with the possibility that bad weather will wash the game out once more. To be fair, the Old Spotted Dog Ground has fared no worse than any other pitch or football ground locally. So, hopefully between the time of writing and kick off time on Saturday, there will have been enough dry days so as to give the pitch a chance to drain and become playable at last. Our visitors this afternoon, Basildon United, will be equally as keen to re-start ther season. Under manager Laurie Carter, the Bees have done very well this term and, whilst they might not be in the promoton shake up at the end of the season, the performances and points accumlulated are a qualified success and a credit to everyone connected with the club. Of course, we wish them every success for the rest of the season, even if those good wishes are qualified so as to take effect after the final whistle this evening. Unfortunately, the last representatives of the Essex Senior League were eliminated from the FA Vase this week. Hullbridge Sports lost 3-1 at Sholing last Tuesday. The event was something of an anticlimax, in that the tie had been postponed on the previous Saturday. Under the competition rules it had to be re-arranged for Tuesday (unless both teams agreed otherwise, to which Sholing did not), and five regular players were missing from the Hullbridge team due to their working commitments. In the circumstances it was a sterling performance from Hullbridge but maybe, particularly in the later rounds of the competition, thought ought to be given to the fact that most players at this level are amateurs and have day jobs. Also, when competing teams are unable to field their best eleven, it serves to devalue any victory or the true ethic of the competition. Food for thought for the FA rules people. Some interesting Clapton ‘goodies’ will be on sale at the ground today. A new order of Clapton / Scaffold Brigada scarves is on way, and new enamel badges, denoting Clapton FC as being “Forest Gate’s Team since 1888”, are available today. The long lay off has been extremely frustrating for clubs, players and fans alike. No doubt the Ultras will, again, be in fine voice this afternoon and, even if you are not in the scaffold, get behind the lads and be the twelfth man for the Tons. The players and team management really appreciate this and the the Old Spotted Dog is becoming a hard place for away teams to take points once again. Long may that continue! Today’s Visitors BASILDON UNITED F.C. Nicknamed ‘The Bees’, Basildon United came into being in 1967, previously Armada Sports as a junior club, who were formed four years earlier. In 1967/68 the renamed club joined the Grays and Thurrock League moving into the Greater London League the following season. The first major step was in 1970 when the Essex County FA granted Basildon United Senior status and they became founder members of the Essex Senior League. It was not long before Basildon got amongst the honours and when they successfully applied for promotion to the Athenian League in 1980 they could look back on four consecutive Championships from 1977 until 1980 and this still stands as a League record. In addition they also finished runnersup in 1973 and 1975 and the League Cup was won in 1978 to complete that season’s double. The following season they carried off the Essex Senior Trophy. Basildon United’s membership of the Athenian League only lasted one season as they finished runners –up to Winsdor and Eton and earned promotion to the Isthmian League Division 2. Also in this season,1980/81,they progressed to the quarter finals of the FA Vase before Irthingborough Diamonds ended the bees run winning 6-4 in a sixth round replay. After three seasons in the Isthmian Division 2,Basildon United were promoted as Champions in 1984 pipping St Albans City by one point on the last day of the season. This season saw them reach the finals of both the Essex Senior Trophy and the Eastern Floodlight Competition. The bees found life a lot harder in Division 1 and eventually lost their struggle against relegation in 1989 back to Division 2[north], this the first time they had been relegated in their history. Two further seasons were spent in Division 2[north] before the decision to de-regionalise the Isthmian Second Division saw the club resign from the Isthmian League and rejoin the Essex Senior League in 1991/92.The club felt that an excess of travelling in an Isthmian Division 3 was not viable at that point. The club quickly regrouped both on and off the pitch and it wasn’t long before the Senior League successes of the late seventies were emulated. The bees finished in the top six in both 1991/92 and 1992/93 and made a League Cup Final appearance in 1992. A superb 1993/94 season saw Basildon United again win the Essex Senior League double,the championship being won for a record fifth time and the following season,1994/95, they battled through to the FA Vase Quarter Final for the second time in their history before losing out to Raunds Town. During 1997/98 Basildon United equalled Brentwood’s record of three League Cup wins by beating Burnham Ramblers 1-0 in the final and it was Basildon’s sixth appearance in the Essex Senior League Cup final which is also a record.The Bees also finished runners-up to Concord Rangers in the Essex Senior League. 1999/2000 saw Basildon United finish 13th their worst ever season till the 2007/08 season and although a reasonable 8th position was achieved in 2000/01 two bottom half positions followed for the next two years. The club finished 7th in both 2003/04 and 2004/05 .John Higley was bees manager at the start of the 2007/08 season but was replaced by Jason Emery in October, the club struggled for form all season and used 72 players only to finish in 16th just one place off the bottom, the only consolation was winning the ‘Best Programme in the League’ award.

A new management team of Colin Cook and Gary Morris was announced for the 2008/09 season and the club won its first six matches and reached the second round proper of the FA Vase, by December the management team had left the club and ex reserve coach Jody Prevwell

was appointed Manager with the Bees finishing the season in 8th place. Jody left the club by mutual consent in April 2010 and was replaced by Sean Merchant as Caretaker Manager.The Bees suffered their heaviest defeat on April 24th when losing 10-0 at Witham Town with the club finishing the season in 12th place. In May 2010 John Doyle returned to the club as First Team Manager bringing in former Romford Manager Mark Reed as his Assistant and Paul Rogan as Coach. After a 12th place finish in the Essex Senior League John Doyle decided to step down at the end of the 2010/11 season and the club advertised for a new Manager, over 30 hopefuls applied and Paul Larke was appointed as the Bees First Team Manager in June 2011,after the clubs worse start to a season in their 42 year history Larke resigned following a 9-1 defeat at Witham Town. John Doyle returned to oversee the forthcoming FA Vase match against Ampthill Town and the following week Chris Wood was appointed permanent Manager. Unfortunately no immediate improvement was seen in the teams results and the Bees finished bottom of the ESL for the first time in their history. Former Ramsden Manager Bobby Barnes was appointed in May 2012 and at just 27 was one of the youngest Managers in Non League Football After Bobby decided to resign due to work commitments John Higley returned to the club and was assisted by Steve Brown Senior. This season has seen the appointment of Laurie Carter, a highly respected coach with many of his former players in the professional or semi professional game. Laurie was also manager of Canvey Island's highly successful Academy and FA Youth Cup sides, from which he has brought several young, talented players to The Cohart Stadium this season The Cohart Stadium in Gardiners Close, Basildon was opened by then West Ham players Geoff Hurst and Jimmy Greaves. The first match was played against West Ham in front of what remains the club's record crowd of 4,000.

PITCHERO WEBSITE We have been asked to reproduce recent correspondence following Mrs Shirley Doyle’s complaint to Pitchero that the Friends fo Clapton FC have been passing themselves off as Clapton Football Club on the website. Both letters are reproduced in their entirety.

SHIRLEY DOYLE’S LETTER TO PITCHERO – 20/12/13 Dear Sirs/Madam, As the Club Secretary of Clapton Football Club, I am writing to voice our concerns over the fact that there is a club that has set themselves up on the pitchero.com website as claptonfc. Although when going to the website it shows that it is indeed an organisation calling themselves Clapton Supporters Club. Firstly, this organisation has no association with Clapton Football Club. Further, in being able to have their domain as http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/claptonfc/, not only does it prevent the official football club from being represented on your website, it also gives a misleading impression that this is the official club. Through Pitchero's own good online marketing and SEO practices, you are also unwittingly supporting this organisation's presence in the search engines. Our understanding was that Pitchero.com has as its primary service to provide clubs, leagues and county organisations with the tools they need to create a website, manage their membership and increase their online revenue, with Football being just one of the sports you cover. Clapton Supporters Club is not a football club - the structure you provide enables them to present themselves in this way, replicating the information that a football club normally presents. Just to be clear, our issues are not with Pitchero.com, we think you provide a fantastic service for sports clubs to have a professional online presence. We also appreciate that you cannot vet every single club that sets up on your platform. We look forward to hearing your views regarding this situation and at the very least, would hope that this body is not be allowed to refer to themselves as "Claptonfc" in their domain, especially as they are neither a football club nor associated with Clapton Football Club. OUR RESPONSE TO SHIRLEY DOYLE – 30/12/13 Dear Ms Doyle I have read your email sent to Pitchero in respect of the web site currently run by the Friends of Clapton FC. Let us be clear. The Friends of Clapton FC do not require an association with, or sanction from, your ‘club’ in order to write, report, investigate or make any other comment as regards matters on and off the field of play that may be of interest to our members or any other visitors to that, or other web addresses and publications. Furthermore, there is no question of the Pitchero web site, to which you refer, passing itself off, or wishing to pass itself off, as being a web site of the entity of which you claim to be Club Secretary. The site is clearly marked as being that of a supporters club and, unless one has the IQ of a pot plant, it is unlikely that anyone finding the site, would realistically assume it is an official site of Clapton Members Club or, if you would prefer, “Clapton Football Club”.

Notwithstanding the above, if your concern is that various bodies are passing themselves off as the Clapton Football Club, then I invite you, who purport to be the Club Secretary and therefore an Officer of the club, to consider the following companies all of which have traded using the name ‘Clapton Football Club’. Clapton Football Club Limited - Company No. 07291485 (Dissolved no accounts) Clapton Football Club Limited - Company No. 08011511 (Dissolved no accounts) Clapton Football Club 1878 Limited – Co. No. 08769591 (recently incorporated) As each of these £1 limited companies included Mr McBean as a director, one would expect that, at the very least, there is every reason why you, as a purported officer and member of the ‘club’, would wish to investigate and alert the other ‘members’s to this activity. I am aware that the Football Association has received no notice of change of entity of the Clapton Football Club so clearly the two entities (club and Limited Company) are separate, particularly as regards taxation, VAT and assets. As regards the use of the club crest, we will continue to use it as we wish on the sure basis that neither you, Mr McBean, nor any other members of your group have any copyright or intellectual property rights over this design. In fact, I would be very interested to learn on what basis that claim is made, particularly in light of the documents and information we have to and as to the another company with whom Mr McBean has indelible connections, namely Knights Securities plc - Company No. 03194263 (dissolved, no accounts) If you are insist that you are secretary of the Clapton Football Club, the entity formed as Downs FC in 1877, renamed Clapton Football Club in 1878, five times winners of the FA Amateur Cup etc, then I would be interested if you would confirm :1. that you are personally liable, jointly and severally, for the debts of that club including, but not limited to, the liquidated amounts owed to Mr Kenneth Harris and Mr Michael Fogg? 2. that your ‘club’ recognises Mr Michael Fogg, Mr Martin McShea and Mr Iain Hollowell as life members of the club? If you believe that you, or any other person have some kind of intellectual property right over the club crest or any other item used or re-produced by the Friends of Clapton FC and, as a result you/they have suffered loss or damage, then I invite you to issue court proceedings against me or the Friends of Clapton FC without delay. There is no issue as regards the use of the name Clapton FC and I believe that I am fully justified and able to use that name, if I wish, through the written consent of the Life Members of the Clapton Football Club that I have mentioned above. However, if you believe that you, or your ‘club’, have any intellectual property rights over the name ‘Clapton FC’ and you or your ‘club’ has suffered loss and damage, then, again, you should issue proceedings. You can serve any claim or Notice of proceedings at my address in France under the Court Procedure Rules. If you were to issue proceedings, this will give all parties courts the opportunity to go through the quagmire of dubious dealings, in which the name of Clapton FC is implicated. These dealings can be described, at best, as less than honest. It would also be an opportunity to seek the advice of the Football Association whom, I believe, have some record of the financial dealings, particularly as they relate to the County Court issue. If you fail to act further on this issue, save for the missive to our friends at Pitchero, then it can be rightly concluded that your assertion is mischievous and misleading and without foundation. However, we would very much welcome these issues to be resolved, if necessary, via the legal process. The next issue relates to your address for service and that of the entity of which you claim to be a member and Club Secretary. You, and the ‘club’, have been previously using an address at 52 Effingham Road, London SE12 8NU. We are aware this property is occupied by Mr Kazz Harris, a member of Clapton Members Club. The freeholders of the property, London and Quadrant Housing Association, are not associated with the ‘club’. You will be aware that there have been previous County Court proceedings in which a judgment has been entered at the address. Mr McBean, who was involved in the unsuccessful defence of those proceedings, gave notice to bailiffs on 2 nd May 2008 that he was no longer a tenant at that address and had no other asset but his ‘cloths’. It is likely that the registration of such a County Court Judgment at the address would be of concern to the freeholders, as well the sub-letting of the property to the ‘ex-tenant’ Mr McBean, and the use of the property as

the registered office of a number of Limited Companies who consistently fail to submit accounts before being struck off. As far as we are aware, the Clapton Members Club are an organisation formed in 2000, headed by Mr Vincent McBean, and who have assumed the identity and used the name of Clapton Football Club. It is very difficult, on the basis of the documents that I have, to reconcile your claim to be secretary, or even a member of, the Clapton Football Club. Therefore, should we need to correspond with you, we will continue to use your address at 31 Northdown Avenue, Margate, Kent, CT9 2NW. If you commence proceedings, as set out above, then we look forward to receiving details of your solicitors. With regard to Pitchero’s support of our club by the provision of a website, we are extremely happy with and grateful for their assistance. Equally your ‘club’/ Mr McBean’s business has benefitted from this website, and others, in that since the formation of our group, average attendances at Clapton games has increased by 400%. Therefore, it is for you to show loss or damage to ‘your club’ in justifying what you say. In normal circumstances, you should be grateful for the renewed interest in the club. However, as I have outlined above, the renewed interest and scrutiny, has certainly exposed a number of issues with which you, personally, ought to be concerned and, which may, in the future, render you personally liable. With regard to the relevance of whether the site should be restricted to a football club, I can inform you that Mr David Fowkes of London FA has confirmed that Clapton Members Club is not a football club. On the positive side, I am very glad that you have chosen to open a dialogue, albeit from an initially negative standpoint. Nonetheless, I am very sure that matters will be eventually resolved for the good of the real Clapton Football Club of which, I believe, Messrs Fogg, McShea and Hollowell remain life members. In your email to Pitchero, you have asked for their views. In order to assist them in forming that view, I am very happy to provide Pitchero or a third party with any documents that are relevant to this correspondence, concerning Clapton Members Club, Knights Securities plc or any of the other Limited Companies embroiled in this affair. I trust that you will be equally as forthcoming with any documents, if they are requested, and I look forward to your responses to the issues I have raised. I also consider it is now time that the Football Association were made fully aware of the issues relating to Knights Securities plc and Clapton FC, and all other relevant correspondence and documents in this regard. As I stated above, it is now time for you to act, produce documents that gainsay the above, or take steps by which you think you can justify what you have written to Pitchero. Given Mr McBean’s previous conduct in other legal proceedings, in which a great deal of unnecessary time and money was spent in pursuing him whilst he was avoiding bailiffs and court officials etc, any Court action brought by you, or your club, will be met by an immediate application for Security for Costs. Finally, please confirm whether you will accept substituted service of documents for Mr McBean at your address, or provide us with his home address, so that the successful plaintiff in the proceedings I referred to above might be properly advised. JOIN THE FRIENDS OF CLAPTON FC Clapton FC are one of the most famous amateur clubs in English football history. They not only won the FA Amateur Cup on five occasions but are recognised by the Football Association as being the first English club to play on the continent and thus instrumental in the growth of the game. In addition, Clapton players have represented England at full International level and numerous others have progressed to the professional ranks and performed with distinction. However, as amateur football became semi-professional and beyond, Clapton's tenure as a prominent club declined. However, they continued to compete in the Isthmian League, a competition that Clapton members were instrumental in founding in 1905. A hundred years later, Clapton were sadly demoted to the Essex Senior League, a competition in which they compete today. Throughout this time Clapton have played at The Old Spotted Dog Ground in Forest Gate, London. This small enclosure, buried amongst residential housing, had hosted both cricket and football before Clapton became tenants in 1888. Clapton are synonymous with the 'Old Spotted Dog' and it remains one of the last traditional bastions of football in the East End of London, an area that has lost great football clubs such as Walthamstow Avenue, Leytonstone and Leyton in recent years. The Clapton players of today represent the club in the great tradition of their predecessors of the yesteryear. Unfortunately, today, the club does not function as a members club where a committee and officers are elected by the membership. Furthermore, it is claimed by Mr Vincent McBean that he owns the club. We have documents that tend to show this to be incorrect along with others that disprove his apparent claims to ownership of the ground, lease, and adjoining warehouse (the ‘delightful’ tyre shop). We are also aware, and have court documents that show that McBean has, in fact, previously undertook to sell the leasehold interest, in his role as a director of a charitable trust. Whilst the primary objectives of the Friends of Clapton FC was to help those who run, administer and play for the Tons, the entity that claims to be Clapton FC has neither acknowledged or accepted that the Friends group have a role to play in the future of the club and would prefer to continue in its present shambolic state. In the meantime, the Friends of Clapton remain vigilant as to any perceived problems, and of issues, such as tenure on the ground, that are not addressed by the ‘club’. For example, earlier this year, the lease on the ground was only weeks away from forfeiture, due to maladministration by the self proclaimed 'club owner’. (Not filing accounts at Companies House) The continuance and well-being of the club, the security of tenure at the Old Spotted Dog Ground and promotion of Clapton FC's activities in an open and forthright manner would re-establish the club in the world of football as well as the local community. However, this is not currently on the agenda of those currently running the ‘club’. We believe that the real Clapton Football Club is deserving of support and whose survival is important, not only to the local area, but also to the sport of association football, the development of which, owes much to the Clapton players, officials and supporters of yesteryear. We were delighted to learn that Brian Jeeves, published football author, regular correspondent to the iprog, Friend of Clapton FC member and a man with indelible family connections to the real Clapton Football Club, was recently accredited by the Football League as a Press reporter. ‘Card carrying Brian’ has since been recently spotted at such salubrious venues such as the Crown Ground at Accrington and the Theatre of Shrimps (Southend United). However, Brian is no less supportive of the Clapton team and fans and we look forward to seeing him back at the Dog soon to witness some real football.
