CLAPTON FC – VIRTUALLY THE BEST TEAM IN LONDON

CLAPTON v TAKELEY Well what a week ! Hopefully, the cup tie against Stanway Rovers can prove to be a watershed for our team, from which, we can all push on to better things. There have been some excellent performaces from all of those who love this football club of ours. Firstly, we marketed the game well and a crowd of 127 (‘official’ – yeah, and the rest) turned up at the Dog on the Saturday. The ‘twitter gang’ did their job in retweeting and raising awareness of the fixture. We also enthused @therealfacup web blog to make their first visit to the Dog and they enjoyed their visit and have reported on their website since. We even understand that Scott Hyams printed and distributed some lefaflets on behalf of the club it self. Well done Scott ! Lastly, the game was also picked up by BTSport who sent a camera crew to the ground. Their video on a very enjoyable afternoon at the Old Spotted Dog can be found at http://bit.ly/171ESxf Then, there was an extraordinary atmosphere created by the, now legendary, Clapton Ultras. Streamers and sparklers abond and when someone suggested flares, I though the Ultras had gone 70s retro. But before I was able to go to my wardrobe and reveal an old pair of ‘Lionels’ that had been saved for such a revival, I discovered that the flares were the firework type. It was Diwali come early.. party time everyone, and the fashion world breathed a sigh of relief ! Even on the Sunday, Barry Lakin, the Stanway Manager tweeted “fantastic support! Best I have seen at Step 5”. However, the greatest performance was by the players and team management, Chris Wood and Neil Day. We all knew that Stanway were a formidable team and that they were hot favourites to turn us over and to shut them out over 180 minutes was an incredible acheivement. Excellent tactics and hard work, coupled with a disciplined performamce from the players frustrated our visitors throughout the tie. On Wednesday’s, not many people gave us a chance. However, our players and team management pulled off one of the best Clapton results for many a season by winning 1-0. At times it may have been ‘backs against the wall’ but, despite this, the Tons also had chances to After the match, the dressing room is rocking, which make the game win it and thereafter, to make the game safe. Neil might explain this blurred image. Good times! Matthews’ winner leaves us with a home tie on 1st September against Mildenhall Town who, like Stanway Rovers, are no slouches. They hammered Sawbridgeworth Town last Saturday by six goals to one to earn their trip to the Dog. Who is to say that we don’t give them an ‘Ultra Spotted Dog’ welcome and take another stride along the ‘Road to Wembley’. So, … (and breathe)…. Today we return to the real world of League football when we entertain Takeley FC. It’s the second successive Saturday when our visitors are managed by an ex-Leyton Orient player. Our visitors, under the management of Steve Castle, were one of the better teams in the league last season and, had it not been for a points deduction, they may well have been in the promotion shake up at the end of the season. They have made a decent start to their league campaign. A 2-2 home draw against the fancied Haringey Borough, followed by a 3-0 defeat of London Apsa one opening day However, in the FA Cup last Saturday, they were surpringly beaten 2-0 by Hadleigh United. We hope our friends from Takeley enjoy their visit to the Old Spotted Dog and our thanks to Kim Norris (www.takeleyfc.com) for the club and player information. th

Next Tuesday, the 27 September, we play at the Old Spotted Dog again, but this time as the ‘away’ team when we are entertained by our ‘squatters’, London Bari FC. Kick off is at 7.45pm. Why not come along and get behind the Tons. Then, a week today, we are back on the road to Wembley when we entertain Mildenhall Town here at the Dog, kick off 3.00pm. However, back to this afternoon. It’s our league position that determines whether the campaign has been successful or not at the end of the season. Remember, Wigan won the FA Cup last year but were also relegated. The league games are our bread and butter and the aim must now be to start racking up some points. The FA Cup, with all its glamour and hype is fantastic, and we are all enjoying the ride. Today, it’s time for the Clapton team, and the fans, to do some hard peddling. Enjoy the game everyone and COME ON YOU TONS ! GVO

OUR VISITORS

TAKELEY FC

Ground : Station Road Manager : Steve Castle

Takeley Football Club is believed to have been formed in 1903, although little is known about those early times. The Club became affiliated within the Bishop’s Stortford, Stansted and District Football League (BSS&DFL) following the end of the First World War. The original pitches were in Hatfield Forest, then on Station Road opposite to their present fine home ground. Additional pitches at the Recreation Ground just past Takeley Park have very recently been arranged by the good offices of Takeley Parish Council. The club is well looked after by local businessmen:- Gordon Silvester, our President, Takeley FC 1903/04 Pat Curran, Chairman and Mick Rabey, Secretary together with local volunteers and active committee members. The manager of the First Team, Steve Castle has had former roles as a Player, Manager and Coach at Leyton Orient, Peterborough, Gillingham, Birmingham City, St Albans and Cambridge United. From early beginnings with the BSS&DFL Second Division the Club has risen through the Essex Olympian League and now to the Essex Senior League, winning numerous trophies along the way. On 29 April 2008 Takeley hosted West Ham United in a match, with Lucas Neil former player with the Hammers and an Australian International Captain switching on the floodlights in front of a crowd of 500. Although West Ham won 4-1, with players including Jack Collison, Junior Stanislas and James Tomkins, now regulars in their first team 2010/11 Takeley has a high capacity seating stand and is newly completed with wall and nets off the main road. GROUNDHOPPER REPORTS A neutral report from ‘Runwell’ a groundhopper who as at Wednesday’s game. This passage was lifted from Tony Kempster’s non-league forum at nonleaguematters.com FA Cup Sponsored by Budweiser, Extra Preliminary Round Replay Stanway Rovers 0 (0) Clapton (0)1 The Hawthorns, New Farm Road, Stanway, Colchester, Essex Attendance: 120 Admission: £6. Didn't purchase programme One of the longest FA Cup hoodoos in the non league world has finally come to an end. After eight years, Clapton have finally won an FA Cup tie! Unlike up the road at Brantham, this time it was an ECL club to put in an inept performance, and combined with terrific goalkeeping and bodies on the line defending, helped pull off an incredible result, to the delight of the small number of 'Clapton Ultras' who made the trip, who ran on the pitch against advice to celebrate at the final whistle. There were strong arguments that a Stanway player was fouled a split second before the ‘wonderstrike’, but the goal stood. The Tons have home advantage again in the next round against another ECL Premier club, but one would think Mildenhall will be just that little bit better than tonight's home side? Whilst Clapton had the odd attack - coming particularly close on the stroke of half time with a shot that drifted agonisingly wide of the far post, it was the home side who really should have been at least a goal up, despite not playing well. Stanway had a header hit the bar, a free header from close range horribly off target, several poor final balls in good positions, and a couple of fine saves from the keeper, which maintained the deadlock up to half time. Stanway continued to threaten at times in the second half, but the East Londoners had their moments, but their goal shyness, inexperience and lack of quality often let them down when they did manage to get into good positions. Yet just after the hour mark, out of nothing they stunned the home side, when from a throw-in a Stanway player appeared to be taken out below the knee, but play continued, and the 'culprit' unleashed a peach of a volley that dipped into the roof of the net from over 25 yards. Moments later, how a Clapton player missed when put through remains a mystery, as he scuffed his shot horribly wide. Stanway appeared to have got worse after half time, with poor distribution of the ball, and when they did get it right, the Clapton keeper made at least half a dozen superb saves - one double save in quick succession was incredible, which kept his side in it. Despite regular chances, an increasingly frustrated Stanway could not convert, and several times on the break in the closing stages, Clapton somehow failed to put the game out of reach. In the end some great defending and more fine goalkeeping, plus a lack of ideas from Stanway, sparked the mass celebrations both sides of the pitch rail, as the Tons somehow clung on to rewrite recent history at last. There is a new turnstile at the Hawthorns (from Col U's old Layer Road ground), almost behind the goal on the entrance side, with plenty of colourful amber and black portacabins now lining the entrance corner of the ground, as the club continues to chip away at the requirements for Ryman League football - albeit on the cheap or second hand it seems? On tonight's showing however, Stanway are a long way off... PHOTOS FROM THE STANWAY HOME MATCH

PLAYER PROFILE - MATT TACEY Matt Tacey played for the Tons about five seasons ago and, having since played at Stansted and Lea Valley, has returned to the Dog where he has installed himself at the heart of the Ton’s defence. We managed to get a bit more info on Matt, his return to Clapton and how he sees things at Clapton FC. Name : Matt Tacey Where do you live : South East London – Plumstead Married /Single etc? : In a relationship Occupation : Psychiatric Nurse Position : Centre Back Previous Club(s) : Stansted, Lee Valley and a spell at Clapton roughly 5 years ago. Why did you come back to Clapton? - A few reasons really, the history, I played semi pro previously but due to work commitments I couldn’t continue and missed the professionalism of it all and the big attraction was the one and only Clapton Ultra's, playing in front of them is unreal! What are your impressions of the team for this season? - I've followed Clapton every year and noticed they are always at the wrong end of the table. Fans, players from last year and management believe we are stronger than last year so I trully believe we can go somewhere this year. I wasn't here last season but talking with players from last year and seeing how much they want it you can clearly see they have the motivation to do a lot better than last year. No one likes to play for a club when we get turned over week after week so last year has definitely made us stronger! How do you or the players respond to the wave or renewed interest in the club and the support from the Scaffold? When the Ultra's are in fine voice we play with a 12 man team! Every player appreciates what everyone does around the club! Have you any advice for the fans ? - Try and sing a little louder!! Haha! Only piece of advice is to continue the way you are! Is there anything you would like to see at Clapton? - Maybe Mr Messi? ... oh alright Cristiano Ronaldo will do ... Which pro team do you support? – Chelsea Your favourite player ? - Very controversial but John Terry ... do not agree with his off field antics ... or on it, at times, but the way he puts his body on the line for his club inspires me. Your favourite ground ? – Anfield ... the atmosphere there on a Champions League evening is beyond belief! Your Favourite meal? - Curried goat! Favourite music/bands? - Love a bit of dubstep! Favourite holiday destination? - Visited Kenya for a month for charity work when I was 16 and will always want to visit again. Favourite film? – Bronson Favourite TV programme? - Match of the Day Who do you follow on Twitter, and why? Obviously everyone associated with Clapton FC but Joey Barton because he is outrageous! Anything else? - Just a massive thank you to everyone for their support!!

Great Wakering Rovers are again looking to be one of the top teams this season. Having secured maximum points with two league wins, the latest a 5-2 victory at Bowers and Pitsea, Rovers went on, in the FA Cup, to hammer Halstead Town 5-0, and we know them to be a strong unit from our preseason friendly. Basildon United have also been in form. Their 5-3 league victory at Ilford was followed by an excellent win at Southend Manor in an FA Cup replay. Haringey Borough have made a steady start and will be pleased with their draw at today’s visitors Takeley. Tower Hamlets won the east end derby at Clapton, whilst the east Essex derby between Southend Manor and Hullbridge Sports was drawn 1-1.

London Bari are finding things tough following the departure of their chairman, manager and players to richer pastures at Redbridge and have lost both their opening games, the last being a 4-0 drubbing at Barking.

OUR NEXT ISSUE For the Mildenhall Town cup tie issue we will be looking into facts about Clapton FC and will start to dispel the myths that lie beneath the surface and about which, many people are afraid to ask. Who really ‘owns’ the club? Who owns the ground? Why is club membership suspended? Who holds the lease on the ground etc. Don’t miss it !
