Sheer-ling Fragility and delicateness comes in the form of sheer outfits during the spring/summer 2015 fashion shows. A varying degree of transparency was spotted multiple times in London and Milan, with some being bolder than others. Flowing around silhouettes, the wisps of sheer silk left little to the imagination with legs and arms showing playfully through a layer of thin translucent chiffons. Alberta Ferretti, Roberto Cavalli and Lucas Nascimento were just some of the designers who favoured the sheer trend for this summer. Baring of one’s body has been a trending topic over the past few months. One of the biggest body baring dispute focuses on Instagram and its ban on images of topless women. In light of this ban, women from all over the world have banded together to fight and protest this and ultimately starting the “Free the Nipple” campaign. Since then, this campaign has evolved and grown. It is an equality movement with a mission to empower women across the world. The campaign looks at sensitive issues such as breastfeeding as well as how it is illegal for females to be topless in many parts of the world. Free the Nipple has sparked a national dialogue, with influencers such as Rihanna, Cara Delevinge and Lena Dunham at the forefront of this campaign. The issue of baring the women’s body seems to have inspired designers and been translated into garments now shown on the runways.

Colour me Suede Though normally reserved for the fall, suedes have made their way on to the runway this

coming spring/ summer 2015. Suede leather is made from the underside of the skin of an animal, such as a deer, calf, lamb or goat. Compared to the standard leather, suede is considerably less durable. However, it has a number of redeeming features, which makes it a popular choice for many. Suede is known for its softness, thinness and pliability, which makes it suitable for the use of garments. To infuse a sense of summer, designers strayed away from the classic neutral tan colours and gone for a more colourful option instead. Hunter greens, mustard yellows and scarlet reds are just a few of the colour saturated suede designs that designers and brands has brought to the catwalk. Gucci, Trussardi and Chloe were just a small selection of many who promoted the fabric. Besides apparel, many suede accessories were spotted as well. Colour saturated bags and shoes in particular, were very popular with renowned brand such as Miu Miu, DSquared2, Gucci and Emilio Pucci setting the stage.

Athletic Couture Sporty street style has been a prominent image on the runway for the past few seasons. This spring/summer 2015 is no exception. Crop tops, lounge pants and sport inspired dresses have been seen in all of the major fashion cities so far this season. However, this trend has since evolved and a different aesthetic has been created. While the designs are very much still inspired by sporty street wear, this season’s collections feature a cleaner and minimalistic touch. The sporty aesthetic wasn’t always a popular aesthetic or trend on the runways. Sportswear inspired pieces only came into prominence during the 1960s when designer Geoffrey Beene introduced a number of sequined football jersey evening dresses. This incorporation of both street and luxury elements inspired many other designers to do the same. Brands such as Byblos, Milly, Parabal Gurung and Alexander Wang featured collections with this new clean sports look. Alexander Wang in particular was directly inspired by sneakers. Wang managed to directly translate Adidas and Nike’s sneakers onto the clothing and accessories of his collection.
