INTRODUCTION
DÁ SAMBA /
Literally dá samba means “this is going to become a samba.” It is a Brazilian expression that says something has possibilities. The expression came to me as I was trying to figure out what defines me as a designer. I am always listening to music while working, mostly Brazilian music. The rhythms and the energy of the songs are constantly inspiring me. I would do research, find out what the project was about, and pick songs that would go with the mood of the project to listen to while working. I think that every project presents possibilities. All you have to do is find the right components to work with. Every project has the potential to become a great samba.

Multiple Abstractions is a campaign to promote the typeface Priori released by Emigre. Priori is a typeface that has a serif and a sans serif set and each set has an alternate version. The designer, Jonathan Barnbrook, took inspiration from the type he would see on his walks through London. This multitude of influences and versions makes for a typeface with a multitude of personalities. That got me thinking about our own personalities. Nobody is the same all the time. Barnbrook believes in the power of design to change people’s viewpoints. To present one of Barnbrook’s typefaces, this book had to convey a message. My decision was to talk about this very common human feeling of searching for who we are in the middle of the many personalities we have in ourselves, and to do so through the poems of Portuguese poet Fernando Pessoa. An eccentric character himself, Pessoa wrote under a variety of names. They were not simply alter egos, they were – their creator claimed – full-fledged individuals who wrote things that he himself would never or could never write. Like Pessoa, Priori is an ensemble of diverse personas. I felt there was a deep connection with the poems and the typeface.

Strength of Being is a project to promote the paper collection Savanna, by Gmund. It consists of a book, swatch cards and a poster. The colors and textures of the paper were inspired by the African savanna so choosing Africa as a topic for the project was a clear choice. The African continent has been struggling with poverty for many years. The book addresses that issue with a positive note by showing women who are working to change Africa. It focus on three women: Wangari Maathai, Agnes Pareyio and Ngozi Okonjo-Iewala. The work each of them do in Africa is different but ultimately it is about bringing more assets to women. These three women are extremely proud of their African heritage and believe that preserving their culture is essential to developing the continent. The colors in the book are often found in their clothing. The paintings come from tribal face paintings. The message of the project is that empowering women is the key to developing Africa and that the tools to develop the continent are in their culture and in their capacity.

Restart is a recycling center that would work in the urban environment. The main goal of the recycling center is to improve recycling and educate people about how to recycle. One of the biggest problems with recycling in public spaces is that many people don't know how to sort the trash and many people don't care to do so. To bring attention to the recycling center, Restart is colorful and has an interesting shape. It also has specific shapes for each hole. It was observed in many studies that holes with different shapes on recycling centers (like a round shape for cans and bottles, a sliver for paper, etc) improves recycling. It makes people conscious of sorting their trash as they approach the bin, and makes them more aware of the need to recycle throughout their everyday life. Restart also color coordinates the recycling categories with the colors of recycling bins that already exist in some American cities.

The birdhouse is entirely made with found materials. I used wine country in Northern California as a source of inspiration. The idea of a drunk bird building its house amused me and inspired me to sketch some very unusual shapes. The Napa Valley region is very sophisticated but it retains a laid back and fun style, staying true to the west coast spirit. That's how the license plates fit in, they make the birdhouse extremely unusual but perfectly suited for the valley. Special thanks to James Bosch for helping me to build this birdhouse.

Get On Board is a fictional campaign organized by newtrains.org to promote better public transportation in the United States through railway service. Transportation is a big issue in the country. The United States is considered a developing country when it comes to rail transportation. The problems currently associated with rail service, such as bad access to rail stations and constant delays, are true but mostly because of bad planning. The goal of the campaign is to show that with good planning of integrated rail systems connecting the city center and suburbs to the train stations and high speed rails connecting the entire country, trains are actually a good solution to the transportation and environmental problems we face today. The campaign is directed towards the general public as a way to encourage them to push the government for better public transportation. It is also directed towards politicians, law makers and companies interested in investing in railway service. The visuals were inspired by subway maps and public transportation tickets. The patterns are bold and very lively, bringing out the dynamism of modern rail transportation.

Olivia in Anatomyland is a kids book done for my Book Arts class. Anatomy illustrations always intrigued me because of their details and because organs taken out of context look very interesting. I started imagining what other things the body parts could be and tried to make a little story out of it. The story of the book is typical of many children's narratives. Olivia gets into a strange land by accident and goes through some adventures trying to get out of there.

Nurture Your Brain is a fictional conference for TED. The act of playing has been studied by scientists for years and remains a big scientific mystery because they haven’t yet discovered how playing is useful, but it is so prominent across nature that it should have some kind of evolutionary value. New research is starting to prove that playing is extremely important for the development of the brain throughout the animal kingdom. The brochure plays with the idea of nutrition, with play being like brain food and the information being presented like the nutrition facts that come on the back of food packaging. There are many photos of people and animals playing, but mostly of adults. It has been discovered that playing not only helps develop the brain but it’s important to keep it functioning, and adults are the audience for the conference. The brochure and the posters encourage viewers to play more often and to go to the conference.

Tyke is a line of household paint for Benjamin Moore that has no volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are extremely bad for the environment. The idea was to introduce an environmentally friendly paint with a unique approach. Tyke is completely environmentally friendly but instead of focusing on the "green" qualities of the paint, the line is promoted as an option that is healthy and safe for kids. This opens a niche market that has never been explored by big brand names such as Benjamin Moore. The bright colors and fun patterns are designed to catch the kid's attention. The idea is to make them excited about being involved in the process of decorating their rooms. Yet the design is sophisticated enough to engage the parents as well.

Mango is a clothing store from Barcelona. It is present in 91 countries throughout the world and has a strong reputation in Europe and Asia. Like other European brands such as Top Shop and H&M, Mango brings high fashion to the general public with affordable prices. What makes Mango different is that they target a slightly older audience. The redesign of the logo is clean and modern. The same philosophy is applied to the identity system. The diagonal lines and patterns reinforce the strength of the modern woman, while the colors are soft and sophisticated. The photography style is bold and strong. The typography has a certain disregard for rules and the tall and curvaceous shapes bring some sensuality to the message. The new look relates to strong and powerful women of today without overlooking their seductive and tender sides.

Cirque du Soleil started with a few young street performers and grew into a small multinational company. If their dream—built on boldness, risk, and imagination—came true one day, it was partly because there were older people who believed in them, irrespective of their youth, image and status as street performers. That’s why the entire campaign focuses on belief in creativity. Through creativity we can build a more sustainable world, we can generate a better future, we can help youth at risk to get on with their lives. Visually the project is very colorful and dynamic. It draws inspiration from the language of the circus but in a clean way so the message gets passed across. The campaign promotes the idea that Cirque du Soleil uses its innovation and creativity to help make the world a better place. Simple geometric shapes are used in a creative way, showing that simple efforts can generate beautiful things and promote transformation.
