CHILDHOOD FREEDOM | AN INDICATOR FOR A FUNCTIONING URBAN HABITAT
Childhood independence has been massively eroded over the last 50 years. Time spent away from parental observation has almost disappeared, as we strive to protect our children from real and perceived dangers. Throughout the project I explored the elements that have shaped this cultural change and its effects on children. Not just to their physical health, but their mental health too. How can children develop and grow when we don't let them overcome challenges and adversity independently. Children need to have free independent mobility and somewhere to go where they are not criminalised for just hanging out.
The old Tate and Lyle Sugar Silo site in the Bootle area of Liverpool became the focus of the project when looking for a potential site that could provide a large space solely for children. The disused grade II listed building became a large indoor play-scape. A parent crèche is provided to occupy parents while children play. To the North of the building lay a vast brownfield site.

Regularly spent six hours away from home especially in the school holidays.
Was given a sandwich for lunch and told to be home for tea time.
Would play out nearer to home. Spent around three hours playing out, but would come home for lunch.
Rarely goes out without a parent. Occasionally bikes or roller skates alone on the street. Not usually for more than 15 minutes.
Mapping area of independent mobility of my mother, myself and my daughter. Childhood independence and been eroding steadily over the last 60 years. Most children now spend no time unsupervised.
Low traffic neighbourhoods in dense terraced housing. Limited on street car parking. Street trees and pocket parks. Use of re-purposed car parks.
Re design of junctions to reduce traffic speed and prioritise pedestrians and cyclists.
Existing green infrastructure to be improved to increase usability by children.

POTION GARDEN DIPPING PONDS AND PICK-ABLE PLANTINGS

The Sugar Silo Landscape Design
The design of the landscape focused on three keys aims. To design a landscape that in itself would be a playground. To re-introduce the ecology of the Merseyside coastline and to celebrate the sites industrial heritage.
On the West side ruins emerge from artificial dunes that are made from recycled sand and building rubble, this then moves through areas of meadow and on to wooded pine forest.
The landscape is connected to the silo building with a steel overhead walkway in celebration of the Liverpool overhead railway. The paths within the park use reclaimed rail
track as a nod to the sites history as a goods station.
The landscape offers children opportunities for agility, fantasy and construction play as well as space to socialise.

Park Design for an under represented group for the site at angel meadows

This garden started out as a traditional rectangle of grass surrounded by a narrow planting border. The brief was to transform it into a place to relax with a new patio and seating.
The grounds behind St Michaels Church used as a paupers burial ground between 1788 and 1816. 40,000 People buried before it was closed.
1844 - The Oldham Road Terminus is closed and a new viaduct built through the burial ground to the new Victoria Station.

1788 - St Michaels Church constructed to serve the growing number of residence of Manchester.
Institutions to care for neglected children sprang up to deal with extreme poverty. These included Sharp street ragged school 1853 and the Charter St Ragged School 1861.

Slum clearances and industrial decline leaves the area neglected and most vacant lots are used for car parking.
Manchester’s economic growth and demand for inner-city living changes the area as commercial enterprise gentrifies the area.

In 1855 the Upper burial ground was covered in flags to stop the bodies appearing at the surface.
As population grows the wealthy residence move out. Larger homes are occupied as lodging houses with multiple people sleeping per room. Construction of cheap slum back to back housing.

Character assesments

The Residential Area to the South East of Angel Meadows compromises of a mixture of historic buildings that have been renovated and new apartment blocks. The area uses the historic road layout from the previous century. This results in narrow gloomy streets with tall buildings blocking out daylight. There is a quiet, claustrophobic atmosphere.
There are very few people in the streets despite the high population and there are very few shops on the ground floors of the buildings. New apartment blocks often give over the ground floor to car parking. On other buildings the ground floor windows look directly into peoples apartments with little space between the passer by and the window. There are no green elements to this area apart from a few trees in planters to try an alleviate the gloom. The narrow streets create a wind tunnel adding to the unpleasant feelings in this space.

Ephemeral artwork and creative sketch modelling

Ephemeral artwork explores the hidden stories of Manchesters slum. Their histories are woven into the fabric of the site represented by the red cotton rope. The colour and fabric are significant. The red represents the labour movement, born from the harsh working conditions in Manchester. The cotton represents the capitlast industry and explotation of colonial territories.

Using themes from my multimedia artwork and my ephemeral artwork I used cotton of varying thickness to twist and lay paths. From this I developed my concept of a twisting installation running through the park. It winds and interacts with the existing topography and historic features within the park. In different areas of the park the installation evolves into interactive elements. In the sunny area of the park it become a long winding table for community gatherings and picnics, as it intersects the historic church wall it loops over as a slide. It leaves the park on the North side and swoops down to the cobbled street becoming a bench, before re-entering the park.

Asylum seekers use of public spaces is different depending on the individual. It is hard to make sweeping judgments as to how and why people access public spaces. The research noted that public spaces with activites and sports were more likely to be visited than parks and forests that were just places of natural beauty. This may be because these places are not easily accesable. Parks which support refugees to find community and also peace can help with the many emotional needs of this group. Charity led groups can help facilitate safe and welcoming enviroments. Angel Meadows is a reletivly small park, and the number of activites must therefore be limited. The topography of the site means sports facilities would be hard to incorporate. One key element to people experiences of fear, is that of dogs off leash in the park. Angel meadows is used a great deal by poeple excersing their dogs. This must be concidered in the design. I have identified four key principles to base my design around in order to help provide a barrier free landscape.
• Peace
The long table winds through the community space giving the option for large family groups or community groups to gather and socialise.
The sculptural elements leave the park and becomes seating on Aspin Lane
Meadow planting with quite spaces for peace and seclusion.

Bringing connection to the historic features of the park the slides utilise the existing structures and topography to bring and element of fun to Angel Meadows
Secondary pathways to encourage dog walkers to use alternative paths and give users who don’t like dogs more space.

CLIENT - HEATON GROUP
Working on Bishopgate Gardens in Preston to deliver a planting scheme for the front of the residential building.
The client wanted more colour than the original landscape architects planting plans.
Plants were choosen to deliver some much needed colour to the communal space outside of this residential block. Completed during the final phases of the buildings construction.
I had to liaise with the project manager and site manager to organise deliveries and labours on site.

The residential block at bishopgate gardens is a redevlopment of an existing structure. The client had constructed a roof terrace that they wanted to use as a communal space for residents. The design of the space was severly limited byt the maxiumum load restrictions. I liaised with the structural engineer to develop a compromise that fitted within the saftey limits and still provided some greenery on the roof tops for the residents.

West Point Gardens
Volunteer work with West point Residents Association to increase the use of the local green Project 05

The brief for this project was fairly broad. The residents were keen to improve their local green space, to increase community use and biodiversity. The residents association had previously engaged local schools to help put up bat boxes and plant bulbs.
I suggested that updating the centre cirle would provide a focal point to the garden. By creating a new flower bed we could encourage peolpe to spend more time in the gardens and not just use it as a short cut.
By splitting the large bed into three, I created more manageable sized beds that could be maintained easily. A small magnolia tree created the focal point in the middle of the circle. I created a mixed planting scheme to provide year round interest. The plants needed to be reliable and tough, yet still be pretty. Where possible simple flowers were used, that give oportunities for bumble bees to forage. I led a community effort to plant the new plants that were provided, based on my planting scheme, by Manchester City Council.

The Gardens have grown beautifully. The use of the Gardens by the local community has increased. The local community continue to look after the flower beds. The park is used for multiple community projects and the residents are keen to keep on improving their park. I recently also helped to install a new wildlife hedgerow to the boundary on Slade Lane.
