Welcome to the Clarence Valley Citizens of the Year Awards, where we gather to honour individuals and community groups who show exceptional dedication to service, compassion, and community spirit. The nominees for the 2025 awards have made significant contributions across a wide range of fields, including education, health, fundraising, charitable services, business, employment, sport, the arts, the environment and social inclusion.
Today, we also celebrate Country and how the land and sky define our Valley’s identity – from the saltwater to the freshwater, from the bushland to the sea. We acknowledge the Gumbaynggirr, Bundjalung and Yaegl people, past and present.

Brian Ferrie has been an unwavering pillar of the Maclean Show Society since taking on the role of President in 2008. His dedication is evident in the significant improvements he has spearheaded at the showground, including the installation of a new PA system, upgraded lighting, and stable renovations. He has also collaborated with the Rodeo Committee to construct a new stable block and shed. Beyond infrastructure, Brian has been a champion for the Young Women Program, advocating for funding to empower young women in the community. His efforts extend to securing grants and ensuring local councils address community needs. Brian actively encourages collaboration with events like the Scottish Highland Gathering, fostering a vibrant community spirit. His commitment is further exemplified by his hands-on upkeep of the showground and monthly RV fee collections. Brian’s leadership, innovative ideas, and dedication to community engagement make him an exemplary nominee for Citizen of the Year.
Damien Fisher has made Loving Life FM103.1 a cornerstone of community connection in the Clarence Valley. His dedication extends beyond managing a radio station; he actively engages diverse groups through live broadcasts and innovative programming, ensuring every voice is heard. One of Damien’s standout achievements was his “25 live broadcasts across 25 consecutive days,” showcasing his commitment to community engagement. His energy and availability have linked the community, promoted events and fostered inclusivity. Beyond informing and entertaining, Damien mentors individuals, encouraging them to explore opportunities in media. His guidance helps many find their voice, building confidence and a sense of belonging through community radio. Damien’s unwavering dedication to connecting, supporting and inspiring the community has made a profound impact. He continues to be a driving force behind Loving Life FM103.1, turning it into more than just a station—it’s a vital hub of engagement and unity for the Clarence Valley.
Gavin Rayward is a passionate community leader dedicated to promoting outdoor activities and mental health in the Clarence Valley. Since 2013, he has organised numerous events to engage people of all ages and abilities, such as the Street-O orienteering event in Grafton and traditional orienteering events in Bom Bom State Forest. Gavin’s efforts have introduced many locals to orienteering, promoting physical activity and community engagement. Additionally, he co-founded the MAD (Men Against Depression) Paddlers group in 2021, using paddling to support men’s mental health. Gavin secured funding for equipment, creating a supportive environment for participants. His commitment extends to volunteering with South Grafton schools and establishing the Grafton Park Run. Gavin’s leadership, ability to connect people and dedication to fostering well-being have left a lasting impact on the community, inspiring others to get involved.
Helen Tyas Tunggal embodies tireless dedication to community, environmental stewardship and education, both locally and globally. With a 33-year career in education, Helen now focuses her energy on volunteering for the Clarence Valley community. Her leadership spans environmental advocacy, youth programs, music education and arts initiatives, often working with the local Yaegl community to ensure inclusive outcomes. Helen’s impact includes coordinating school Learnscapes, advising on sustainable management and serving as a mentor for climate change awareness. Her roles in community groups, from Clarence Landcare to Angourie Coastcare, enrich countless lives. Internationally, Helen shares her expertise through initiatives like OzGreen’s Youth Leading the World, while locally, she champions sustainability and community engagement. Whether mentoring young musicians, advocating against inappropriate developments, or presenting evidence to government panels, Helen’s contributions exemplify unwavering commitment. As a mother, grandmother, educator and advocate, Helen inspires generations with her passion, optimism and determination to improve the Clarence Valley and beyond.
Jesse Dean Langford has significantly impacted the Clarence Valley through his involvement in charitable and social initiatives. In 2024, he participated in the Run for Autism, completing over 100km and raising funds for Aspect Australia. As a youth leader at Grafton Presbyterian Church, Jesse organises fortnightly BBQ dinners for students and drives the bus for outreach events, fostering community support. As President of the Copmanhurst Social Golf Club, he oversees weekly raffles, donating a portion of the proceeds to local charities. Jesse’s leadership goes beyond fundraising; he consistently demonstrates kindness, compassion, and empathy, setting an inspiring example for others, especially youth in the community. His commitment to promoting Autism awareness and upholding strong ethical values makes him a powerful role model for young people in the Clarence Valley. Jesse’s work drives positive social change, encouraging others to embrace kindness compassion and making a meaningful difference in the community.
Kaitlyn-Maree Robertson is a dedicated community leader known for her exceptional initiative and leadership. As an active member of Scouting, she consistently seeks opportunities to contribute meaningfully, demonstrating her commitment to youth and community development. Kaitlyn volunteers at local events, including the Anglicare Christmas party, where she helps provide entertainment for young people. In 2024, she raised over $500 for Aspect Australia by completing 80km in the Run for Autism, showcasing her dedication to supporting important causes. Kaitlyn’s fundraising efforts and community involvement reflect her proactive approach to making a positive impact. Additionally, she has led various autism awareness and diversity inclusion initiatives, working to make the Clarence Valley more inclusive. Always the first to offer help, Kaitlyn consistently goes above and beyond in every role she undertakes. Her leadership and commitment to promoting inclusion and diversity inspire others, helping foster a more compassionate and connected community.
Kathleen Giggins exemplifies civic pride through her unwavering dedication to maintaining the footpath outside the Grafton Hotel on Fitzroy Street. For six days a week, she ensures this is the cleanest footpath in town, enhancing the local environment and setting an inspiring example for others. Having worked at the Hotel for many years, Kath takes immense pride in her role, contributing to the beautification of the area and creating a welcoming atmosphere for locals and visitors alike. Her consistent work reflects her strong sense of responsibility and commitment to the community. Kath’s initiative demonstrates how small, daily actions can lead to significant improvements in public spaces, encouraging others to take personal responsibility for their surroundings. Her dedication to creating a cleaner, more vibrant community makes her an inspiring nominee, showcasing her as a model of community engagement and environmental stewardship.
Kathryn Langford is a dynamic leader in the fitness community, serving on the National Anytime Advisory Group to represent regional clubs at Anytime Fitness Australia. As the manager of Anytime Fitness Grafton, she has created an inclusive environment with an open-door policy for carers and support workers. Kathryn’s advocacy for the Welcome Here program promotes inclusion for people of all abilities. Despite having no prior experience in the fitness industry, she purchased the gym eight years ago and grew its membership from 400 to 1,100. Her vibrant personality and personal fitness journey inspire clients to achieve their goals. With the gym’s rapid growth, Kathryn is expanding to a larger facility to better serve her members. Her commitment to community service includes participating in charity events and successfully raising funds for Aspect Australia. Her efforts to provide personalised support, foster community and promote inclusivity make her a standout leader in the fitness industry.
Sally Rogers, founder of Happy Paws Haven, is dedicated to rescuing and rehoming animals in the Clarence Valley. Since establishing the no-kill shelter in 2006, Sally has saved and rehomed over 3,700 animals, providing a lifeline to pets in need. Her commitment extends beyond animal rescue; she collaborates with local councils, offering crucial support during crises such as floods and fires. Happy Paws Haven also plays an educational role, welcoming diverse groups to interact with animals and learn about welfare. Sally’s dedication to her community is unwavering, even at the age of 74, relying on donations and community support to operate. Her efforts have made Happy Paws Haven a vital pillar of the community, inspiring others through her compassion and commitment. Sally’s work ensures that animals receive love and care while educating and engaging the community.
Suzanne Day has been a dedicated Cub Leader with Scouts New South Wales since 2005, leaving a lasting impact on the community. Her devotion to mentoring young people and equipping them with essential life skills is evident in her leadership. Suzanne is passionate about creating inclusive experiences, organising specialised Scouting camps for children with additional needs. Known for her empathetic nature, Suzanne offers encouragement and support, building lasting friendships and a strong sense of community among Scouts. As a mother of three, all of whom contribute to the community, Suzanne has become a maternal figure for Scouts without family support. Her unwavering commitment to developing future leaders, positive attitude, and tireless dedication make her a treasured role model in the Scouts community and beyond. Suzanne’s work enriches lives, fostering kindness, leadership and inclusion.
Toby Power, the 2023 Grafton Jacaranda Festival King, has made a profound impact on the Clarence Valley through his leadership, volunteer work, and dedication to local organisations. As Jacaranda King, Toby has been an outstanding ambassador for the festival, fostering community spirit and promoting cultural heritage. His involvement in organising events, fundraising and public engagements has helped sustain the festival’s significance and inclusivity, strengthening local connections and inspiring future generations. Beyond the festival, Toby has shown deep commitment to local sports. As President of the Grafton Hockey Association and the City Bears Hockey Club, he has played a pivotal role in the growth of hockey in the region, encouraging participation and promoting sportsmanship. His contributions also extend to supporting the South Grafton Rebels Rugby League Club. Toby’s efforts focus on mentorship, outreach to vulnerable populations and advocating for mental health awareness, making him a respected and inspiring figure in the community.
Kaitlyn-Maree Robertson is deeply committed to creating a more inclusive community, especially for individuals with additional needs. Through her involvement with Scouts NSW, she actively shapes future leaders by helping young people develop essential life skills and leadership qualities. Kaitlyn is known for her positive attitude and willingness to help others, consistently demonstrating initiative in community engagement. She supports local organisations, including making donations to Aspect Australia, which works with individuals with autism. As a helper and committee member with Scouts NSW, Kaitlyn plays a key role in guiding and inspiring youth, empowering them to become future leaders. Her efforts go beyond organising activities; she creates an inclusive environment where everyone, regardless of their abilities, is valued and supported. Kaitlyn’s dedication to community service, enthusiasm for fostering leadership in young people and advocacy for inclusivity make her a standout member of the community.
Nash Crofton has made a remarkable impact on the Clarence Valley community through his entrepreneurial spirit, leadership and passion for the arts. During the COVID-19 pandemic, Nash founded Clarence Tunes, a home-grown music festival providing a vital platform for local artists to showcase their talents. Launched in February 2022, the festival quickly became a regional highlight, with proceeds directly supporting performers. Nash also manages the Youth Stage at the Grafton Jacaranda Festival, ensuring young talent has a prominent space at this major event. Through his efforts, he nurtures creativity, promotes self-expression and strengthens the area’s cultural identity. In addition, Nash runs Crofton Productions, offering professional audio engineering services and collaborates with local production companies to amplify the success of community events. Balancing these achievements with Year 12 studies, Nash demonstrates exceptional leadership and commitment.
Reny Dooley has made a remarkable impact on the agricultural show movement, particularly with the Grafton Show Society. She is the driving force behind the Showgirl/Young Woman competition, expanding it to include boys and young men, fostering a more inclusive environment for self-development and empowerment.
Reny’s efforts have transformed the competition, serving participants from ages 7 to 30, focusing on fun, learning and community involvement. A passionate advocate for youth mental health, Reny mentors young entrants, guiding their growth and encouraging community contributions. She has expanded the local Man of the Land competition into a statewide program, reaching over 50 NSW show societies. Reny speaks at conferences on inclusion in the agricultural sector, highlighting rural youth struggles. As the first-ever two-time winner of the Grafton Young Woman/Showgirl competition, Reny represents Grafton at the Rural Young Woman of the Year Zone 1 competition and serves on the NextGen board, helping rural youth find passion and connections.
Shannon Moran is a dedicated community member with a passion for health, wellbeing and youth development. After completing her HSC in 2020, she pursued a traineeship at Maclean Vet Hospital and obtained her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing, qualifying in 2023. Shannon currently works at Maclean District Hospital in Food Services and Patient Support, as well as at Grafton Veterinary Clinic as an equine nurse. She is an active member of the Maclean Show Society, holding key roles such as Young Woman Program Coordinator, Sponsorship Officer and Group 1 delegate for the ASC’s Next Generation. Shannon has been involved in the Show Society since childhood and uses her position to encourage and mentor young people. Her leadership in the Young Woman Program provides valuable skills and confidence to participants, helping them connect with others and develop lifelong skills. Shannon’s commitment to volunteer work and empowering others makes her a dedicated role model for the Clarence Valley.
James Cameron, the owner of Grumpy’s Rock Café, is a supportive leader dedicated to uplifting marginalised community members and providing opportunities for those with fewer chances. His café has become a welcoming space, particularly for NDIS clients, offering both employment and engagement through inclusive activities. Each week, Grumpy’s Rock Café hosts “NDIS Monday,” where a band composed entirely of NDIS clients performs, celebrating their talents and fostering a supportive environment. Additionally, several NDIS clients assist at the café during the week, gaining valuable work experience and building confidence. James’s impact on these individuals is profound; he offers encouragement, employment and inclusion that visibly enhances their confidence and social engagement. The positive atmosphere he creates allows customers to experience the joy and growth of these staff members firsthand, fostering an environment of community support. James’s leadership is marked by a commitment to involvement, demonstrating his belief in the value of every individual. Through his efforts, Grumpy’s Rock Café has become a symbol of encouragement, community support, and inclusion, making James an influential advocate for a more equitable and supportive community.
Jenny Vickery is a dynamic leader whose charitable efforts have profoundly impacted vulnerable individuals in the Clarence Valley. As founder and coordinator of the Warm Touch 2460 charity, she assembled a dedicated volunteer team to provide free gifts and donations to people in need, including nursing home residents, hospital patients, individuals with disabilities and those affected by natural disasters such as bushfires, floods and droughts. Jenny actively speaks to community groups to rally support for Warm Touch and Knitted Knockers, coordinating the making and distribution of breast prosthetics for women who have undergone mastectomies. Beyond her charitable work, Jenny is a longstanding member of the GDSC swimming club, where she organises social events, arranges club swimwear and assists swimmers of all ages in improving their skills. Her leadership has brought together volunteers dedicated to helping the most vulnerable in the community. Beyond her work with Scouts, Kaitlyn is a staunch advocate for autism awareness. She regularly participates in the “Run for Autism” and other fundraising activities, raising substantial funds to support individuals on the autism spectrum. Kaitlyn’s involvement extends to supporting organisations like Aspect Australia through ongoing fundraising efforts. Her efforts build a more inclusive, supportive environment for individuals with autism and socially disadvantaged groups, making her a trusted community leader fostering empathy, understanding and collaboration.
Moana Gray is a certified yoga instructor at Paua Yoga Studio, where she leads inclusive weekly classes tailored to various fitness levels and financial needs. Her dedication ensures mindfulness and wellness are accessible to the entire community, fostering an environment of care and support. Growing up in the Clarence Valley, Moana developed a passion for health and fitness that propelled her to become the third-ranked squash player in New South Wales in 2016. Representing her hometown of Grafton, she gained valuable experience and inspiration, which she now channels into her work as a yoga instructor and community leader. Beyond her teaching, Moana actively supports charitable initiatives, including the annual Run for Autism event, and offers personalised guidance to help clients meet their fitness and wellness goals. Her radiant personality and approachable demeanour inspire others to prioritise health, build meaningful friendships and pursue fulfilling careers. Moana’s journey from competitive squash to yoga instruction exemplifies how passion and dedication can transform into a rewarding profession. Through her work at Paua Yoga Studio, she continues to uplift the Clarence Valley community, sharing her expertise and encouraging others to embrace healthier and more mindful lifestyles.
Robert Fahey has shown steadfast leadership in the Copmanhurst community, contributing to multiple local organisations and committees for decades. As a member of the campdraft committee, he served as secretary for several years and held the role of treasurer for the Copmanhurst War Memorial Hall Trust, managing its affairs for over 30 years. His involvement extends to the Copmanhurst school’s Parents and Citizens Association (P&C), where he has served as president, as well as to the sports ground trust and the tennis club, consistently supporting these community pillars. Though Robert is a quiet achiever, his dedication is evident through the impact of his reliable work across these roles. He maintains a low profile, but his efforts in preserving and supporting local facilities have significantly contributed to the area’s vibrancy. Known for getting things done without a fuss, Robert exemplifies the qualities of a community leader, deeply committed to the long-term welfare of Copmanhurst. His contributions reflect both reliability and an unassuming approach, making him an invaluable asset to his community and a model of local engagement.
Happy Paws Haven thrives thanks to the dedication of approximately 40 volunteers. As a no-kill shelter, they are committed to providing lifelong care for their animals until they find their forever homes. This is made possible through adoptions, donations and the tireless efforts of their volunteers. Their mission extends beyond sheltering animals; they aim to enrich their lives and build a brighter future for the community. By continuously upgrading skills and implementing new programs, Happy Paws Haven ensures that the animals in their care experience love, respect and enrichment during their stay. Happy Paws Haven welcomes school groups, TAFE students, NDIS clients and others seeking work experience, teaching them the importance of animal welfare, including desexing, immunisation and microchipping. In times of crisis—domestic violence, natural disasters, or personal hardships—they provide temporary shelter for pets, ensuring their safety and wellbeing. They proudly support local businesses, fostering a community that values and respects animals. Their vision is to create a sustainable, future-ready facility while emphasising the profound impact animals have on human lives. The team at Happy Paws Haven invites the community to contribute to their mission and join them in shaping a compassionate future.
Paua Yoga, located in Grafton, is an inspiring yoga studio offering a tranquil space that encourages relaxation and personal growth. Dedicated to inclusivity, the studio’s teachers embrace diversity and prioritise the unique needs of each student, fostering a mindful and adaptive approach to yoga practice. Paua Yoga empowers individuals to step out of their comfort zones while attuning to their physical and mental wellbeing. The studio hosts enriching yoga retreats throughout the year, focusing on mindfulness and health through Raw Nutrition Workshops. These events inspire participants to prioritise wellness and build a deeper connection to their health. Paua Yoga offers flexible membership plans to accommodate the financial needs of the community, encouraging consistent practice through accessible options. Beyond its commitment to personal wellbeing, Paua Yoga actively supports charitable causes, including contributions to the Run for Autism event in October. The studio’s welcoming atmosphere brings together individuals from diverse backgrounds, fostering lasting friendships and community connections through its extensive class schedule. Paua Yoga’s instructors are known for their supportive, friendly approach, helping clients achieve their goals with positivity and care. This dedication has made Paua Yoga a cornerstone of health, mindfulness and community in Grafton.
Rivertree Film Inc. stands at the forefront of environmental advocacy, uniting the Clarence Valley community to protect the lifeblood of the region—the Clarence River. Through impactful storytelling and community-driven action, this not-for-profit has become a powerful voice for preserving the river’s ecosystem and cultural heritage from threats such as industrial mining. Their crowning achievement, a visually stunning and thought-provoking documentary, celebrates the river’s beauty while highlighting the devastating potential of unchecked industrial activity. This film has reached over 230,000 viewers and inspired more than 1,200 individuals to join Rivertree’s advocacy efforts. Through film screenings, discussions and partnerships with sponsors such as Patagonia and Intrepid Travel, Rivertree has rallied more than 3,000 attendees across the east coast and beyond. In 2024, Rivertree launched its first three-year strategic plan to ensure the Clarence River’s vitality for generations to come. The organisation’s achievements include galvanising public opposition to mining activities, empowering the community with knowledge, and fostering collective action. By blending advocacy, education and creative media, Rivertree Film Inc. has transformed concern into meaningful change, ensuring the Clarence River continues to sustain life, support local economies and inspire future generations.
Warm Touch 2460 is a compassionate, community-driven not-forprofit committed to helping individuals in need across all ages and circumstances. This organisation quickly mobilises when someone in dire need is identified, often via word of mouth or a phone call. Their dedicated volunteers work tirelessly to deliver essential and comfort items as quickly as possible, ensuring recipients feel cared for and supported. Warm Touch’s efforts extend across 21 aged care facilities, providing handmade knitted and crocheted items such as rugs, beanies, mittens, scarves and specialised items like dignity bags for catheters, aprons, cushions and twiddle mats for dementia or autism patients. They also support oncology units, palliative care, special needs individuals, the homeless, cancer patients, and those facing medical hardships. Volunteers keep their homes stocked with these items, sacrificing their own space to ensure quick response times. This remarkable group is backed by local businesses, generous community members and dedicated volunteers, many of whom find healing in helping others. Their tireless work has an immeasurable impact, offering dignity, love and support to all they reach. Aidan has been awarded and recognised for his ongoing journey into fundraising for cancer patients is a deeply personal and inspiring one, born from the pain of losing his father to cancer. Over the past two years, Aidan has dedicated himself to alleviating some of the financial burdens faced by cancer patients, understanding firsthand the costs associated with treatment, travel for scans, and visits to oncology centres. His compassion drives him to raise money that directly supports these patients, ensuring that funds are distributed through oncology nurses in the form of petrol, gift, or food vouchers—practical resources that provide real relief during an incredibly difficult time.
Aidan is a kind and remarkable young man whose generosity knows no bounds. Despite his shy smile, his heart is immense, and his actions speak volumes about his selflessness and unwavering commitment to helping others. His ability to give so much without seeking recognition is a rare quality, and his dedication to making a difference is something we should all aspire to. Aidan is the epitome of kindness and compassion, a true role model who demonstrates that even the smallest acts of love can have a profound impact on those in need.
Sally has been awarded Local Hero as recognition for her passionate advocacy for responsible pet ownership, playing a pivotal role in educating school kids, college students, NDIS participants, aspiring professionals in the animal care field, and the wider community. Through her work, she highlights the importance of understanding and meeting the needs of companion animals while fostering a sense of responsibility in pet owners.
She is dedicated to building a sustainable future for both animals and the community by continuously upgrading her skills and resources, ensuring that new programs are developed to address emerging needs. Sally consults with veterinarians, trainers, animal behaviorists, and pet adopters to shape her initiatives and deliver the best possible outcomes for both pets and their owners.
Sally’s business acumen and reputation within the local community—and well beyond the Local Government Area—are highly regarded. Her expertise is often sought after by other animal shelters and individuals seeking guidance, solidifying her role as a trusted source of advice and inspiration. Her ongoing commitment to improving the welfare of animals and enhancing pet ownership practices makes her an invaluable asset to both the community and the animal welfare sector.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service - Grafton Volunteer Support Group received recognition for being a cornerstone of support for the helicopter service since 2012, raising vital funds to ensure the continued operation of this life-saving service. Over the years, the group has raised more than $134,000 through a variety of community events, including the popular annual Helicopter High Tea, Barefoot Bowls Days, and Bunnings Barbecues. In addition to their own fundraising efforts, the group has also supported other organizations, such as the Grafton Sporting Car Club, in raising funds for the Rescue Helicopter.
Comprising around 15 dedicated active members, the group’s commitment to the cause is truly inspiring. Many of the volunteers have been involved for over 10 years, with some having given their time for an impressive 26 years. Their unwavering dedication to supporting the Rescue Helicopter Service reflects a deep sense of community spirit and a shared commitment to ensuring that this vital service remains available to those in need.
The work of the Grafton Volunteer Support Group is a testament to the power of community involvement and the lasting impact that a group of passionate individuals can have in helping to save lives.
