Lilly Heine’s graduate collection won her international recognition. Lilly is trained in textile design and her aesthetic is characterised by unusual shape and surface detail. For her MA collection, Lilly drew inspiration from Picasso’s sketches of women and she interpreted the exploration of body through the strong silhouette in her design. Topshop will be stocking three of her designs in the signature subtle fleshy tones for which she is renowned. matthew Matthew Harding’s graduate collection explored the dimensions of sheer jersey and sheep wool through the use of copper corrugated metal. His intentions were to focus on the strength of women. He highlighted a balance between tough and feminine and cited Wonder Woman as a point of reference, who he describes as “so confident and tough, but somehow fragile and still very sexy”. Simone Rocha’s graduate collection featured minimalistic tailoring in black and white which was lightened by the clever use of sheer panels. With obvious comparisons drawn to her father John Rocha’s designs, hers are said to be sharper. Simone designed headwear as an antidote to this aesthetic, bringing softness and romanticism. Yang Du, the surrealist fashion designer, launched her own label YANG DU in 2009, having worked alongside John Galliano, Vivienne Westwood and Giles Deacon. La giovane designer Svedese Jessica Eriksson She is a 23 year-old Swedish girl that just likes to draw a lot. Growing up with Pippi Longstocking as a role model, she describes herself as being extremely tired in the morning. And we’re pretty sure we know why. From shoes and coffee cups to guitars and tshirts…if you can imagine it, she’s probably color bombed it. Her artistic interpretation of Chako Paul City is a wildly colorful and disorderly place that looks a lot like it does in her head, she says.

WHO IS TOTTO RENNA Totto Renna, aka Super Totto, is one of the most celebrated champions of pixel art, a form of digital expression created on the computer through the use of raster graphics software, where images are edited on the pixel level. Pixel art creatively combines vintage game aesthetics with themes of a retrofuturistic pop culture that never was. The term “pixel art” was first used by Adele Goldbert and Robert Flegal of Xerox Palo Alto Research Center in 1982 [1]. However, the notion of pixel art can be traced back to the Seventies. It can be found, for example in Richard Shoup’s SuperPaint system in 1972, also at Xerox PARC. As a technique, pixel art is a digital form of divisionism (pointillisme) [2]. In the former, instead of brushes and canvas, the artist operates with a mouse on a screen. Before it gained mass visibility, pixel art used the internet as its main channel of production, distribution, and discussion. Unsurprisingly, pixel art has found many estimators and supporters in the generation of gamers that grew up in the ‘80s, when the pixel aesthetic was not a deliberate stylistic choice, but rather a technical constraint.

To overcome the limited graphical capabilities of early computers, programmers had to find the right balance between creative expression and iconographic legibility. Pixel art provided a satisfactory solution to the problem. The rapid advance in game graphic visualization, whose ultimate goal is photorealism and naturalism, led to the unfortunate demise of the pixel. When polygons and textures gained momentum, pixel art became instantly obsolete and it disappeared from the screen. The reasons behind its recent revival are both sentimental and technical. Modern pixel art has been seen as a reaction to the 3D graphics industry by amateur game/graphic hobbyists. Many retro enthusiasts often choose to emulate the style of the past. Some view the pixel art revival as restoring the golden age of second and third generation consoles, where it is argued graphics were more aesthetically pleasing. Nowadays, there are entire online worlds created with pixel aesthetics, like the popular Habbo Hotel. In the late Nineties and early years of the 21st century, the market was literally inundated with such devices as cellular phones, tamagotchis, and portable console that used relatively primitive graphics. Pixel art is a global movement that unifies artists and fan-communities scattered around the net. In the typical pixel community, artists share their art and techniques, hints, and tips. Many of these sites often host a “Pixel fight”, a virtual battle that occurs when a number of artists take turns on editing the same picture, usually divided in “slots” (frequently square or hexagonal). The fight consists on making things as tricky as possible to continue for the next artist. These pixel battles combine art-production and game-playing. Community collaborations are also very frequent. These usually involve a basic “create-your-own” idea over a theme (a city, a building, a spaceship and so on), where a template is given for the users to participate creating their own entries. gner, art director and culture jamming enthusiast who believes in the power of creativity and its ability to change the world. Having developed a career in advertising while living in Cape Town, New York, San Francisco, and Amsterdam, Cash continues commercial work on a freelance basis, and in his free time creates viral art projects that subvert pop culture and address themes of social activism. In addition to said projects, he enjoys street art, snail mail, mashups, meditation, and writing in the third person. A 22-year-old college student was busted for trying to sell “Fire Isiah” T-shirts outside Madison Square Garden on Wednesday night. Ivan Cash says he was hauled away in handcuffs, taken to the Midtown South Precinct, fingerprinted and held in a cell for three hours - until the Knicks lost to the Sacramento Kings, 107-97. Then he was given a ticket and released. Cash was at 33rd St. and Seventh Ave., waiting for a pal who has a vendor’s license, when the cops swooped in, he said. He was charged with “intent to sell.” A police spokesman confirmed the arrest Wednesday night but had no details. Cash said more than 100 frustrated Knicks fans had bought his T-shirts - at $20 a pop - at the last three Knicks home games. The graphic design student at the State University of New York at Geneseo makes the shirts himself. Around a photo of beleaguered Knicks coach Isiah Thomas, black lettering on the bright orange shirts delivers the message, “Don’t hate the player or the game. Hate the coach.” “The police came up to me at every game before and asked me what I was doing,” said Cash. “I told them. They shrugged, and that was that.” But not Wednesday night. Si è conclusa l’edizione 81 di Pitti Immagine Uomo (Firenze, Fortezza da Basso, 10-13 gennaio 2012), un’edizione che i 1.100 espositori hanno onorato con collezioni piene di novità, ricerca e innovazioni andamenti dei diversi mercati della moda maschile. Germania, Giappone, Gran Bretagna, Stati Uniti, Cina, Corea del Sud e Turchia – tutti in aumento o per compratori o per punti vendita – trainano la dosia pure prevedibili, come quello della Spagna (oltre 150 compratori in meno), di Grecia e Portogallo. Ottimi risultati, con incrementi a due cifre, dai ricchi paesi nordici - Svezia, Danimarca, Finlandia - con la sola eccezione della Norvegia. Oscillazioni in basso di pochi punti percentuali per mercati consolidati come Francia, Russia e Hong Kong, che restano però su valori assoluti molto alti. Andamenti diversi nell’area dell’est europeo: bene Romania, Lettonia, Slovenia, Croazia, Slovacchia, in calo Ungheria, Polonia e Repubblica Ceca. Stabili due emergenti di peso come India e Messico. come Sudafrica e Israele, mentre l’area medioorientale è stata meno brillante che in altre edizioni. Nell’insieme le presenze estere si sono attestate intorno alle 7.400 unità, mentre i compratori italiani sono stati in totale 13.600 circa. I visitatori nel loro complesso sono stati oltre 30.000. “Noi diamo sempre risultati veri, è una questione di rispetto verso i clienti e verso noi stessi, ma i numeri dicono e non dicono – chiosa Raffaello Napoleone, amministratore delegato di Pitti Immagine – lo sappiamo bene tutti, soprattutto gli espositori, che infatti sono molto soddisfatti di questo Pitti Uomo. Anche un solo compratore in più da Germania o Giappone o Gran Bretagna o Stati Uniti vale un tesoro – e il suo peso, in termini di potere d’acquisto, è moltiplicato per “n” volte. Quindi questi sono segnali positivi per Pitti e per il Made in Italy. I migliori negozi di moda italiani, quelli di riferimento per le aziende di qualità, sono arrivati tutti a Firenze, senza eccezione – è un fatto decisivo da sottolineare – ma sul nostro paese è inutile raccontarci storie: la situazione è pesante, i consumi sono al minimo e i negozianti fanno un’enorme fatica, spesso sono costretti a rinviare i pagamenti… e qualcuno chiude. Ce ne sono tanti in questa condizione, basta girare per le città. Se a Pitti sono calati di oltre il 10% i motivi reali non mancano di certo. Anzi, in tanti sono venuti lo stesso per ritrovare idee ed entusiasmo”.

“Un pianificatore con un senso estetico”, così si definisce Yorel Cayla, prendendo le mosse dalle celebri parole di Bruno Munari. Yorel è un graphic designer francese con base a Parigi dove si è laureato nel 2008 presso il National College of Arts and Design Olivier de Serres. Da due anni, proprio nella capitale francese, insegna tipografia e book design. Subito dopo l’università ha maturato esperienza nello studio grafico di Oslo Yokoland. Yorel Cayla concepisce il proprio lavoro come una missione impegnativa e stimolante che si traduce nella continua ricerca di novità nel campo del design grafico, esplorando identità visive, caratteri tipografici e il design editoriale. Un approccio concettuale - sostenuto da una forte capacità di visualizzazione - ludico e originale che gli permette di creare di volta in volta soluzioni specifiche per le necessità dei suoi clienti. Il “Silence” dello studio grafico di Karl Nawrot / Walter Warton per la nuova veste del tema-guida Pitti

Karl Nawrot (con il suo pseudonimo Walter Warton) vive e lavora ad Amsterdam. Ha studiato illustrazione a Lione, completando il suo percorso di studi con un master presso la Werkplaats Typografie di Arnhem, in Olanda, nel 2008. Graphic designer e tutor presso la Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Nawrot pone al centro del suo lavoro la pratica del disegno, che ha influenzato numerosi suoi progetti e che abbraccia differenti forme di espressione, dal design di caratteri tipografici (disegnati a mano o digitalizzati) a illustrazioni (rappresentazioni architettoniche e disegni astratti). La parola scelta per il progetto del tema guida dei saloni invernali di Pitti Immagine è “Silence”.

La visione grafica “Serendipity” di Château-Vacant

Uno studio di grafica con sede a Montreal, agenzia e collettivo artistico allo stesso tempo. Un progetto giovane in continua evoluzione che unisce il talento di Yannick Calvez, (27 anni, diplomato alla National School of Applied Arts Olivier de Serres di Parigi), Baptiste Alchourroun e Lémuel Malicoutis (26 e 25 anni, diplomati entrambi alla National School of Decorative Arts di Strasburgo). Uno slow-graphic design, dove il fatto a mano, con ispirazione dalla vita quotidiana per colori, materiali e argomenti, prevale sull’uso del digitale. Tra i loro clienti magazine, etichette discografiche e aziende di abbigliamento. Il loro è un percorso lavorativo definito “nomade” – Yannick Baptiste e Lémuel hanno infatti lavorato tra Santiago del Chile, San Diego e, oggi, Montreal - ma che si basa sul concetto unificante di “serendipità” / “Serendipity”: la sensazione di sorpresa quando si scopre qualcosa di imprevisto e non cercato. E proprio questa è la parola scelta dallo studio per rappresentare l’iconica veste grafica dei saloni invernali made in Pitti.

Lo studio di Graphic Design ha scelto la parola “Now” per vestire il tema-guida invernale di Pitti Immagine

We Have Photoshop nasce dal talento creativo di Andrew Shurtz, Mike Gallagher, Rebecca Gimenez e Sebastian Campos, divisi tra Brooklyn, il Canada e la Spagna. La parola che i grafici hanno scelto per il progetto del tema guida dei saloni invernali di Pitti Immagine è “Now”. Il loro interesse converge sul rapporto tra le persone, le immagini e gli oggetti e come questi ultimi condizionino i posti e le situazioni in cui sono inseriti. Una interazione che unisce insieme elementi differenti e contrapposti con esiti unicamente sorprendenti. Questo il senso del graphic Manifesto di “Whe have Photoshop”.

“Balance” di OK-RM a Pitti Immagine

OK-RM è uno studio di progettazione grafica fondato nel 2008 da Oliver Knight e Rory McGrath. Il loro lavoro abbraccia una grande varietà di attività che spaziano dall’identità visuale alla direzione artistica ed editoriale, fino a speciali progetti digitali. Recentemente, Oliver e Rory sono stati nominati Direttori Creativi di Kaleidoscope, magazine milanese specializzato in arte contemporanea. Hanno collaborato con organizzazioni quali Barbican Art Gallery, Hayward, Serpentine Gallery, South London Gallery e Artangel e artisti come Wolfgang Tillmans, Snowdon, Damian Ortega e Gabriel Kuri. In parallelo con l’attività dello studio, OK-RM ha dato vita a “In Other Words”, una serie di progetti che esplorano la complessità della lingua inglese. Lo studio di design ha scelto la parola Forest per comporre il vocabolario visivo

Formes Vives è il progetto che unisce la creatività di tre illustratori: Nicolas Filloque, Adrien Zammit e Geoffroy Pithon. Uno studio francese - tra Parigi, Brest e Marsiglia - il cui lavoro si focalizza su temi politici e sociali, attraverso collaborazioni con organizzazioni non-profit e gruppi di attivismo e sull’ideazione di workshop nel campo della pedagogia critica. Una pratica di design eclettica, artistica, non conformista e definita “antimarketing”, sottesa attraverso differenti media: dai giornali, ai poster, dai siti internet ai libri, passando per cartoline e installazioni.

Giacomo Covacich si è laureato in Comunicazioni Visive e Multimediali presso l’Università Iuav di Venezia. Dal 2001 si occupa di design della comunicazione dedicandosi a progetti personali e collaborazioni con particolare attenzione agli aspetti sociali del design. Nel 2007, con Morris Granzotto, ha fondato WOW, studio di grafica con sede a Treviso. Collabora con l’Università Iuav di Venezia in qualità di assistente alla didattica. Per il tema guida dei saloni invernali di Pitti Immagine ha scelto la parola “Utopia”.

“Money” di Mirko Borsche per il tema guida di Pitti Immagine

Mirko Borsche è la mente creativa dello studio “Bureau Mirko Borsche” con sede a Monaco. Dopo essersi laureato in Graphic Design all’Università di Kingston e, successivamente, in Communication Design presso la Fachhochschule für Gestaltun di Augusta, in Germania, Mirko Borsche ha lavorato, tra gli altri, per Levis, MTV, Mercedes Benz, Panasonic, Reemtsma e New Business. Dal 1999 al 2002 è stato art director di “jetzt-Magazin”, una pubblicazione del Süddeutsche Zeitung, per la quale ha lavorato nuovamente dal 2004 al 2007, in occasione del rilancio della rivista. Dal 2002, inoltre, è stato nominato art director per Mini-International BMW Group e, nel 2007, è divenuto direttore artistico di Die Zeit e Zeit Magazine Leben. “Money” è il vocabolo-icona che ha scelto per la nuova veste del tema guida invernale di Pitti Immagine.

Martin Nicolausson è un illustratore svedese e graphic designer di stanza a Londra, vincitore del premio ADC Young Guns del 2010. Technology è la parola scelta da Nicolausson per rappresentare, attraverso un logo, la nuova pelle dei saloni di Pitti Immagine di Gennaio 2012, con uno speciale allestimento in Fortezza da Basso. Tra i suoi clienti: Absolut Vodka, The Economist, Topman, The New York Times, Bloomberg View, MTV, Stockholm Fashion Week e Wired. E’ stato inoltre protagonista di numerose pubblicazioni e mostre worldwide. “Reorient” per il vocabolario visivo del tema guida di Pitti Immagine

Hyoun Youl Joe è un graphic designer con base a Seoul. Dopo gli studi in Visual Communication e Design presso la Dankook University nella capitale sudcoreana, dove attualmente insegna, ha completato il suo percorso formativo con un M.F.A a Yale nel 2009, anno in cui ha fondato anche il proprio studio “Hey Joe”. Nel suo lavoro coniuga sperimentazione e ricerca all’interno dei cortocircuiti creativi tra immagini e testi appartenenti a contesti sociali e culturali definiti: una riconnessione, combinazione e riorientamento degli stessi verso nuovi orizzonti grafici. E proprio da questo suo particolare modus operandi deriva la parola scelta per il vocabolario visivo che andrà a comporre il nuovo tema guida di Pitti Immagine: “Reorient”. Tra i clienti di Hyoun: artisti, editori, curatori e istituzioni culturali. Recentemente la sua attenzione si è indirizzata, con particolare attitudine, sulle funzioni e i ruoli dei mezzi di comunicazione.

Pet Punk con la parola “Regain” a Pitti Immagine

PetPunk (Vilnius) è uno studio grafico fondato nel 2005 da Andrius Kirvela e Gediminas Šiaulys. Un tandem creativo fortemente interessato nei confronti dell’arte tattile e dell’animazione. PetPunk ha ricevuto numerosi riconoscimenti dai più importanti magazine di riferimento nell’ambito grafico, divenendo sinonimo della nuova generazione di designer dell’Est Europeo. Nel 2009, il magazine canadese “Boards” ha incluso Pet Punk nella top 6 dei “New Wave of Designers”, mentre, nel 2010, il magazine inglese “Computer Arts” ha definito Pet Punk come “The New Wave of Animation”. Andrius Kirvela and Gediminas Šiaulys sono stati i primi lituani insigniti del premio “Young Guns” dall’Art Directors Club di New York e invitati a numerosi festival internazionali. La “Curiosity” di Tobias Röttger a Pitti Immagine

La forza alla base del lavoro di Tobias Röttger è la curiosità, come sostiene lo stesso graphic designer che afferma: “I hope to remain curious”/ “Spero di rimanere curioso”. E “Curiosity” è proprio la parola scelta per il tema-guida di Pitti Immagine. Un grande interesse nei confronti dei sistemi di visione concettuale, del design creativo e delle tecniche tipografiche, rappresenta il modus operandi di Tobias Röttger, art director freelance, diviso tra Londra e Berlino, e collaboratore dello studio Hort, nominato nel 2008 dal Magazine Wallpaper come uno dei migliori diplomati nella categoria dei graphic designer. Nel 2011 è stato finalista per il Newcomer Award organizzato dal German Design Council.

Un giovane studio grafico dalla forte connotazione trasversale, per internazionalità – ha sede a Londra ed è composto dall’italiano Valerio di Lucente, dal francese Erwan Lhiussier e dal brasiliano Hugo Timm – e per la tipologia di lavoro, che si sviluppa attraverso differenti media come stampa, digitale e design tipografico. I tre grafici si sono conosciuti al Royal College of Art di Londra, fondando in seguito al diploma, nel 2008, lo studio “Julia”. Tra i loro clienti figurano Wallpaper Magazine, Elephant Magazine di cui sono direttori artistici e il Britsh Council. La loro attività lavorativa spazia dalla pratica graphic fino all’insegnamento, alla realizzazione di lezioni, workshop e corsi nelle maggiori scuole di design in Gran Bretagna e allo IUAV di Venezia. design Project aura

Is a bicycle lighting system designed to address the issue of nighttime urban bike commuting. The system challenges the current paradigm of bike lighting, and it was our intention to create a functional safety lighting system that riders want to use and want to be seen using it. Last week marked the official end of our SURG project. We set up our poster in the Kirr Commons, propped up the bike against the stools displaying our laptops and answered people’s questions about our project (all while competing with the noise of the Vibratron close by). Yes, judging by this awkward picture, we belong at CMU. We had applied for some competitions, but due to our lack of testing the bike, many of our answers to their questions fell short. But hey, at least we finished. Ethan put together a great poster and we both had our laptops out to display videos of the bike in action and photos of our process. And here is the actual bike, which we realized we never took a picture of. We slapped on new handle bars (bullhorns, aww yeaah), new pedals, and painted the seat black. Note the red on/off button at the tip of the right handlebar- Ethan and my favorite part. Cheers! Look forward the final video which should be up in the next couple days. Here’s a teaser video of the bike in motion. Filming these videos was the first time we ever ran the bike this long, which somewhat surprised us with the amount of trouble we were having before. Hopefully the strips in the rims won’t short out again! Enjoy. Next step, true testing. Our first true ride! We still need to attach the diffusers to the wheels (that’s why you can only see it from the front-ish and back-ish). And ugh, the front wheel won’t turn white. Yet another thing to trouble shoot.

Riding at night can be a daunting and dangerous task, an issue many bike commuters deal with daily. We are both bikers and we know how intimidating it sometimes is to be cycling on the same roads as a car or truck weighing 100 times what we do - being pushed to the far edges of the road shoulder and always having to worry about the large consequences of a driver's small mistake. We wanted to develop a system which increased the visual presence of bikers at night.

As a self-initiated project, we felt that the goals we had outlined in our initial proposal were loose enough to allow for changes or additions down the road. Coming from our biking background, we had a better picture of the problem we set out to confront. We are passionate about our bikes and we see them as extensions of ourselves.

Project Aura deals directly with mistakes both bikers and drivers make in regard to safety. Our design better informs drivers about the biker’s presence and actions as compared to bike lighting systems commonly used (front and rear blinky). In almost all accident scenarios, a root cause of the accident is a lack of information on the part of one, or both of the parties involved.

I must have been sleeping for a long time.. When woke up I thought to be in heaven! Everywhere I looked everthing was so white and the bright light almost hurt me in the eyes. Then I saw many strange creatures in a landscape full of snow. I could not believe it, but there was also Santa Claus with his sleigh carrying gifts to the children. Suddenly a girl approached.. tall, blond hair, blue eyes, she seemed to be an angel! “Are we in heaven, am I dead?? “ I asked. “No, but you are in Germany, Santa Claus freed you from a tree in Rome and brought you to me, that I can take care of you!” explained the girl who’s name was Fredi how she told me then. I felt sooo glad! Now I could stay with such a nice girl, who will protect me from cruel people like B. Joe. Together with Fredi and her family I spend christmas holidays full of love and happiness. Joking, laughing, eating and singing .... I had always dreamed of a christmas like that. In the following days we did a tourist tour in Augsburg (so is called the city where I was, which is the hometown of Fredi), which is one of the oldest cities of Germany in the famous region Bavaria. We also went ice skating on a frozen lake.. how brave-hearted these germans are..it was amazing! A few days ago Fredi told me that soon we have to go to Berlin where we will have to say good-bye.. Even if I’m very sad to lose my new friend, I am very curious wich adventures are gonna go to expect me in Berlin!!! See you soon...
