Welcome

This edition celebrates dynamic staff, engaging students and a wonderfully supportive community.

Trinity has long thrived as a community of faith. Passionate and committed people can achieve some remarkably positive things as has been the case at Trinity. This edition of Trinity Times again celebrates dynamic staff, engaged students and a wonderfully supportive community. Feature articles outline our further expansion into agricultural opportunities for students, success in the field of arts and some affirming acknowledgements of current students and old scholars. The richness and diversity of the opportunities available come to life across the following pages. Students are our number one priority and our best feature. It is tremendous to see their positive interactions with the world and they continue to inspire all at the College. In 2014 the College turns 30 and you are all invited to be a part of the celebrations. Our key events will have a 30th birthday focus with Open Day being an even more significant event. All former students will be invited back for a series of exciting happenings on the day and to be part of a very large photo to celebrate the first 30 years. We hope to have old scholars involved in art displays, music and sport throughout Open Day. Our fabulous Year 11 Presentation Balls are as popular as ever and will move to a larger venue and occur on a single night from 2014. This will enable all Year 11 students and their parents to celebrate together. Trinity Sunday celebrations will be more prominent in 2014 and other exciting events featuring the arts, sport and music will all feature strongly in 2014. Academically, this has been a year where many students have been inspired to do their best. Excellent attainment in traditional academic subjects, newer practical subjects and VET based courses has proved once again there are many ways to achieve personal academic success. We are proud to enrol and support students from all walks of life. I thank every member of the Trinity Community for their strong support of the students of Trinity College.

The Rural Studies Centre covers an area of nearly 30 hectares, producing many commodities. French Adventures Trinity College was represented superbly in France by students from all four Middle Schools during the biennial visit to Macon and Paris. For the first time, families were able to join in with the excitement through the French Trip Blog. There are always two very important parts to an exchange visit to another country. The first is the linguistic benefits to be gained. The students who were willing to take a chance in speaking French were greatly rewarded. For many, this was their first opportunity to practise French with a native speaker of the language in situations which do not arise in the classroom.

Regional Skills Training Partnership Trinity College Senior has recently embarked on a partnership with Regional Skills Training (RST) to deliver a range of rural studies vocational programs on site at the Trinity College Rural Studies Centre. To date 26 students have commenced the course. RST, located at Arthurton on the Yorke Peninsula, offers quality vocational training across the regional areas of South Australia, Western Australia and New South Wales. Trinity College Senior will be the centre of training for the metropolitan and mid northern region. The Trinity College Rural Studies Centre encompasses an area of nearly 30 hectares and produces many commodities representative of local enterprise. The Centre produces hay, grain, grapes, award-winning wines, fruit and vegetables alongside the animal husbandry operation which focuses on sheep, goats, cattle, pigs and poultry. Students at Trinity College are exposed to the operation of these enterprises along with much of the underpinning theory and financial education. Students in Years 9 to 12 also have the opportunity to learn more about the training and exhibition of animals through engagement with the Trinity College Show Team. Vocational programs in agriculture, horticulture and rural operations will be available to Year 11 and 12 students. The majority of practical training will be delivered on site at the Trinity College farm or at local venues. Students also gain further experience through on-farm work experience and/or part time work in local and regional areas, utilising the College’s expanding network of rural community contacts. Students or parents wanting more information on the Rural Studies Programs should contact: Aaron Fechner (Agricultural/Horticulture teacher) fechneaa@trinity.sa.edu.au or Claire Goble (VET Pathways Coordinator) goblecl@trinity.sa.edu.au on 8523 8703.

Just as important is the cultural aspect. It is fascinating to observe the way in which other cultures live, and to compare with our own. Host families spoiled our students. Nobody left a table hungry without trying local specialities and many of our travellers were taken to exciting places such as Chamonix in the Alps, where they could ski, snowboard and toboggan, the Cote d’Azur and Normandy. Next year, we will host students from our partner school during February and March for two weeks. We are looking for students who wish to exchange, which means they will be able to travel to France in 2015. If you would like any further information about future French trips, please contact Mr Ian Ward at wardia@trinity.sa.edu.au. Ian Ward

Trade success Since completing his Certificate I in Engineering at the Trinity Trade Centre, Kyle Richards has never looked back. He continued with his Certificate in Engineering (Specialising in Fabrication) at TAFESA and within weeks, gained an Apprenticeship as a Welder Fabricator at PipeTech Australia. Kyle believes the Trinity Trade Centre “was a great place to learn” and thought “it was a fun working environment.” The Trinity Trade Centre was an excellent place to commence his trades based career.

Testing the Limits with Duke of Ed

The Trinity Trade Centre offers a unique trade training opportunity. Students maintain their SACE curriculum at Trinity College, thereby ensuring their learning opportunities are maintained at high academic standards. The trade students have access to the full pastoral and cocurricular supports of the College.

“The horse I rode was an orphaned Brumby. We passed wide dams, open fields and mountains. We slept in a tin shed with iron ‘beds’ and swags, refreshed with a cold shower (which was essentially just a bucket with holes in it hung from a tree) and cooked dinner on open camp fires. The ride was tough ………..I don’t have any photographic evidence because I was too busy dodging branches and pushing my way through bushes. At times, the hills were so steep you had to lie on the horse’s neck to keep yourself at the same angle as when riding on the flat. We covered an average of 40km per day, it was 204km in total and of course the hottest day ever whilst I was there of 42 degrees…………but I loved every minute!”

Faye Darlington (Year 12) recently achieved her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award. She will be presented with her badge at the formal award ceremony at Government House, in November. To achieve this Faye has shown great commitment. The gold award requires a minimum of 12 months working on a physical activity (badminton), a skill (face painting), service/volunteering (Joey scout leader) and a four day and three night adventurous journey (horse riding through the Snowy Mountains). Here is an excerpt from her diary during the Snowy Mountains ride.

If you think you can achieve the GOLD Duke of Edinburgh Award, please email Mr Matt Bailey at baileyma@trinity.sa.edu.au. The above photo was taken by Faye.

Preschool Build a Farm It was fun to visit the Trinity farm and as well as seeing the animals there, to look at how enormous their vegetable patch is. Students were very excited to be able to pick their own broccoli, cauliflower and carrots to take back to preschool and cook up into soup for lunch. Archie’s grandpa has kindly made three raised garden beds and donated them to the preschool. This term the planting has begun and the children are watering, weeding and watching all sorts of new flowers and vegetables begin to grow. Michelle Heath

Slum Survivor

Book Week Adventures

On the afternoon of Friday 30 August, rather than heading home for a comfortable weekend, 11 Blakeview students went to Blackham with little more than the clothes they were wearing ready to participate in Slum Survivor.

The theme this year was “Read Across the Universe” in the Roma Waite Library. To celebrate, we invited Phil Cummings as our guest author for students in Years 1 to 4. Mrs Stone’s Year 1 class shared their thoughts……

This is a simulation game that fosters students’ understanding of third world poverty by experiencing it first-hand. It ran for nearly 24 hours and students needed to construct shelters out of cardboard boxes, participate in challenges, listen to stories, reflect and perform manual work to earn enough food for a basic meal. This opportunity complements learning about social justice and ethical behaviour in the Year 10 Religion and Values Education classes. The concept comes from TEAR, a Christian movement that works in partnership with churches, relief and development agencies and community-based organisations to respond to the needs of poor communities around the world. The aim of this program is to help students gain an understanding and awareness of the struggles of those living in third world poverty and the social justice issues around that, and to encourage a passionate response to them. Liza Dodsworth, Chris Haskard, youth chaplains, Tim Littleford and Jordan Gauci prepared this Slum Survivor experience for students who were sponsored for how long they could survive in simulated slum conditions. Growing Healthy Families The first Growing Healthy Families event was a great success. In partnership, St Francis Parish, Trinity College and STARplex presented a question and answer style forum hosted by Rev’d Dave MacGillivray. Parents in our community heard some excellent insights into nurturing healthy relationships and building communication within families. The panel openly shared their successes and struggles as parents and shared the wisdom they’ve gained over the years. College Psychologist Dr Lisa Kettler shared both her professional insights and personal experiences about different ways to communicate love to our children.

Craig Winning (parent of six) shared his wish for his teenage boys to learn what it means to lay aside their own desires so that they can serve and bless people around them. Melinda Hately (parent of three) introduced ways of being a peaceful and calming influence within her busy household and Liz Hinrichsen (Head of North Junior School) spoke about her trust in God’s goodness, especially during the tough times and the importance of a positive home-school partnership with growing our children. Rev’d Craig Loveday St Francis Parish

As a special Fathers’ Day treat the North Reception to Year 2 children invited their dads to join them in the classroom for the morning. We were overwhelmed by the enthusiastic turnout with around 100 dads (or grandads or uncles) joining their children in classrooms.

Not only have I learnt many new skills, my own personal development has benefited from living away from home. The experience has allowed me to realise my strengths and potential. The staff, students and parents have been very welcoming and I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience so far. I’m looking forward to my final three months of work before I return back homes.”

The Receptions focussed on some reading about dads and did some writing too. Many dads left wearing very large paper ties which they had helped construct. One of the challenges in Year 2 was to make a paper plane which the children then flew, measuring the distance of the flight. They also shared their reading and writing. In Year 2 the dads were shown how effectively their children can work with laptops.

ABODA SA School Band Festival

A number of dance students from North and South schools are currently participating in a 10 week dancer in residence program. Working with professional dancer Kirsten Burt from Pure Funk Dance, students are learning about the power of dance as well as exploring influential styles of dance throughout history. Their key focus during the program is urban dance, a particular area of passion and expertise of Kirsten.

Trinity College continued to feature in several sections at the annual ABODA SA School Band Festival held at Westminster School. Our concert bands performed exceptionally well in a large field of competitors. This festival is highly regarded and the adjudicators gave our concert bands excellent feedback. Puppet Workshop The Arts Faculty is committed to providing all students with unique opportunities and this term we did just that. All Year 8 classes from across the College participated in a puppet workshop run by Sue Harris. Sue Harris is one of South Australia’s premier puppeteers. Her original and imaginative works have brought the joy of puppets and storytelling to children and adults since 1978. With Drama now incorporated into the English curriculum our aim was to emphasise the potential links between the two learning areas, in this case it was through the use of puppets, performance and script writing. Students learnt how to devise and perform a short piece using a range of puppets provided. The sessions included glove puppet manipulation, using props, performing two puppets simultaneously and how to create a script for the puppets. The students came away very inspired by the project and are keen to develop their script writing skills using puppets. ABOVE Liz Tobias with Glee Club members Zoe Johannes (Year 11), Astra Vadoulis (Year 8) and Julia

Comments from students I liked watching Sue use the ball head puppets.

A Music Night to Remember

I enjoyed watching Sue’s own puppet play at the end of the day.

Trinity North students took to the stage in June with three sensational internationally acclaimed performers Liz Tobias, Michael Mayo and Caio Afiune for the 2013 Cabaret A Variety Gala. Liz Tobias is an acclaimed jazz singer from Adelaide who has entertained audiences around the world with her incredible voice and endearing stage presence. Michael Mayo from Boston, is a talented artist who has performed and recorded alongside many musical greats including Michael Jackson and Barry Manilow, and Caio Afiune is an innovative Brazilian guitarist.

I liked that we got to learn something new and that it involved both English and Drama to tell stories.

The night included performances by the North Concert Band, year level bands, Trinity College Stage Band, student solo performances, graceful dance pieces, musical theatre and choral performances. In one parent’s words, “…It was AMAZING, I had many tears in my eyes - and they weren’t all for my children. The pride I have for our College just grew an umpteenth amount overnight!” The student performers, emcees, stage crew, setting, atmosphere, fluency, organisation and quality of performances delivered by students from all year levels were most impressive. Liz Tobias, together with Caio Afiune and Michael Mayo, provided inspiration and support to our performers prior to the evening. Liz coached and encouraged student solo performers and choral groups, working with individual students and choirs in a series of master classes.

The workshop was great fun, I really recommend it for next year. My highlights were the demonstrations and the improvisation. I learnt that English and Drama combined makes theatre come alive. I learnt about the use of body language between different puppets and characters. I would like my English teacher to incorporate this type of activity into our English lessons more. Figures in Space – 2013 SALA This exhibition was the culmination of work produced by students, staff and invited guests who attended workshops run by Fran Callen. This project was jointly funded by Carclew Youth Arts* and Trinity College. Fran worked one day per week with one class from each site, to develop, extend and reinterpret our students’ understanding of what they see and draw through observational drawing and painting with the theme Figures in Space. ‘Blind contour means to draw without looking. Drawing by looking harder than you have ever looked before. At your subject not your paper. Lines curl, uncurl, tangle and flow. Boxes unfold. Text is snipped. Feathers, sticks and fingers dip and flutter, scraping scavenged surfaces.’ Fran Callen The SALA exhibition was officially opened on Friday 9 August by Mark Fischer, Education Manager Art Gallery of South Australia. The work in the exhibition explored process and enabled students to build confidence and develop experimental drawing techniques. All work was for sale on the night and the students raised over $1,000 which will be donated to the Wall of Hands Foundation for literacy and numeracy for Indigenous students. College Musical Trinity College has completed another successful College musical production with Calamity Jane. This was an energetic and fun show set around the romance between Calamity Jane and the legendary Wild Bill Hickok. With two sold out shows over 1200 members of our community saw the production. The students involved both backstage and on stage as well as in the band, showed what a group of dedicated and talented young people can achieve and they should be extremely proud of their hard work. This year the College musical team included a group of old scholars who worked backstage. Our current students and production team would like to thank them for giving up their time to make the show the best yet. Trinity to Mount Hotham During the July school holidays 40 excited students from Years 9 to 12 and six just as excited staff, boarded a bus for the long trip to the Australian Alps. Mount Hotham was the destination for yet another fun filled Trinity Snow Trip, and Mother Nature had been kind. A decent dump of snow prior to our arrival allowed good terrain to be open for the majority of our trip. Whilst conditions were challenging on the first day spirits amongst the group were high, with everyone embracing the elements, just to get that first slide of the trip in. This year we stayed on the mountain and enjoyed the spectacular views across the Bogong High Plains from our

accommodation at the Pegasus Alpine Ski Lodge. Staying on the mountain allowed us to maximise our time skiing and snowboarding and it also provided us with the opportunity to take shelter and relax in comfortable surrounds when the conditions were tough. Mount Hotham provided us with a variety of conditions; you name it we had it; rain, hail, snow, sleet, whiteout and even some glorious sunshine. To everyone’s credit, our group of snow extremists embraced it all and came out smiling. Days were filled with improving our skills through lessons in the morning and consolidation of learning through practice and some humorous trial and error

during our afternoons of free skiing and snowboarding. Everyone finished the long days on the slopes back at the lodge with a fantastic filling meal and many laughs by the fire, or around the pool table. Thanks to the staff, Lee Cockerill, Scott Charlton, Tyson Greenwood, Carmen Gaskell and Melanie Harding for their hard work and great company. Thanks also to our student snow trippers for their positive attitude and exemplary behaviour, making this year’s trip another memorable experience. The boys, ranging from Years 6 to Year 10, sat wide-eyed at the feet of the master, as he warned them ‘don’t miss learning.’ He stressed that even though he had spent a lifetime in the AFL, he never missed a chance to learn something from everyone he met.

Another powerful and repeated message was having the courage to take risks. Sheedy, an innovator on and off the field, has certainly risked and gained much throughout his career. Originally slated as a 15-minute window, the Australian Sports Hall-of-Famer held the students riveted for 45 minutes, answering questions and sharing a treasure trove of experience from his storied career. Innovation Winners

R U OK Day? STARplex would like to thank its members who participated in the national ‘RUOKDay?’ event. Many of our members made their own name tags to wear on the day and took the initiative to say ‘hello’ to another member. As a centre for wellbeing STARplex will look to offer other new programs to expand on its services in this area.

Past staff For the first time ever past staff of Trinity College gathered to share lunch in the city on Trinity Sunday and talk about old times. With a few former staff travelling from Victoria to make this gathering, the room was filled with much chatter about life since working at Trinity. Attendees requested another gathering in 2014 to help the College celebrate its 30th birthday. For this occasion the event will be known as a staff reunion of former and present staff.

Netball Winter Wrap

September saw the C2 girls, under the guidance of coach Perry, in the grand final. The girls had a dream start to the season with a bye and a forfeit in the first two weeks. This left them fresher than the rest of the competition. In what was a hard fought battle, sadly, the girls did not walk away premiers. B1 had another stellar season as the benchmark of the competition. After an awesome summer season the team made the finals again and lost one week out from the grand final. A2 sadly had their season come to an abrupt end with a game that was abandoned by both teams due to the dreadful conditions and injuries that hampered them all season. The summer season will see TOSNC field four teams in the SADNA Golden Grove competition. We are always on the lookout for more players to join us on a Monday night for netball. From the start of the summer season a new range of merchandise will be available. Order forms are available by email to tosnc@hotmail.com. If you are keen to organise a new team or want to join a team please send an email.

The Kormilda College First XI have just returned from Malaysia and they were runner up to South Africa in the Jahore T20 Championships. BELOW

Football Report

TOSFC made the grand final in 2012 and so gained promotion into Division 5 for 2013. I am pleased to report in our first year we finished just one game out of the finals race in sixth place. Even though TOSFC’s A and B grades did not make finals, C grade had its most successful year ever making a preliminary final. Coach Ben Johnson has turned a struggling team into a team with consistently high numbers. The second half of 2013 realised a dream for the club as it unveiled the new FOOD SHACK, purchased in conjunction with the Old Scholar’s Cricket Club. Not only does it add to our catering facilities it provides great promotional awareness along with opportunities to fundraise externally during the off-season. Finally, TOSFC would like to thank Trinity College for their ongoing support and access to first class facilities. A special mention also to our long term club sponsors, Zorich Group – Sports Power Gawler, Gunn Group and Mawson Lakes Hotel, Fasta Pasta Gawler, Transliquid and Bed Shed. Without the support of these sponsors, many of whom are local family owned businesses, our club would not be where it is today. Carl Teusner (2006) President

Reunions Class of 2003 – 10 year reunion Over 100 people from the class of 2003 gathered at the Royal Hotel, Kent Town in May to share stories and catch up on events over the past ten years since they left school. A highlight of the evening, and illustrating very amusing fashion, was the 2003 Presentation ball video played on the large TV screens.

Hockey Club Update The Trinity Hockey Club looks back at a very successful season yet again in 2013, both on and off the field. Off field events included a quiz night where record numbers attended this always entertaining evening. On field, both the A grade men’s and women’s teams had very promising seasons with the men’s team making the finals but unfortunately going out in the first round to a strong opposition. The club looks forward to what next season holds and we always welcome new players of any age and experience. With an exciting turf pitch being laid in the Barossa ready for the 2014 season, there is no better time to join! Please contact me on 0431 861 165. Tom Gregory (2009) President
