Welcome

We are a community bounded by faith, and committed to making a positive difference.

ABOVE L-R: Chair of College Council, Mr Ray Oermann and Mr Nick Hately review the College master plan as part of the Strategic Plan process.

Welcome to another full and exciting edition of the Trinity Times! The breadth of opportunity and commitment to excellence does come to the fore in this edition. Students finding success in the classroom, on the sporting field, in music and drama are key articles. Most pleasing is the level of commitment from students to serve through fundraising efforts to support overseas communities in Cambodia, indigenous communities in the APY lands, and via donating blood to assist people facing a medical crisis. Students are successful when they give their best and this edition features articles on this occurring via community art, at the show and on camp. The old scholar pages acknowledge and celebrate our graduates and the foundation page thanks so many people and businesses that help all of this happen. We are a community bounded by faith, and committed to making a positive difference. Trinity needs to plan for a bright future. During the course of the year, the College Council have applied much of their energy into strategic planning. Ten key areas, each with a clear vision statement, have been established. Key stakeholders have been diligently working to operationalize this plan and concrete projects will be announced shortly. Achievement of the plan will enable Trinity College to continue to get the best outcomes for the students in our care and to make a positive impact on the wider community. Nick Hately

VALE Janel Green On Wednesday 12 September we lost a wonderful colleague and inspirational teacher, Mrs Janel Green. Janel had battled cancer for the past seven years and had, during this time, continued to work, complete a university degree and commence her teaching contract at Trinity College Blakeview. This is testament to her incredible courage and fortitude. Many students at Blakeview have spoken about her willingness to assist them to achieve their potential, her work as a House Tutor in Uley House, her assistance in learning support and the way she made Christian Living lessons fascinating in the Junior School. Staff have spoken about her warm friendly approach, the strength of her faith, her care and compassion for everyone and her friendly interest in everyone’s lives. Janel’s funeral, on Monday 17 September, was a true celebration of an exceptional teacher and a woman of great strength and love. Over 1,000 people packed the Victory Church to listen to the wonderful memories, the strength of her faith and the overwhelming sense of loss felt by all who had been touched by her. Our school was blessed by her presence on our staff and we will miss keenly her passion and advocacy for teaching, sense of humour, compassion, interest in people and her collegial spirit. Her husband Graham, and children Angus, Matthew and Charlotte are very much in our prayers and thoughts. On the last day of term, we released special wish balloons. Students came to school in colourful clothes with all donations going to the Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA). We celebrated the life of Janel Green and how much we respected and loved her as a teacher and colleague. Mrs Karen McMahon Principal Blakeview

At Gawler River a ‘Gala Day’ was held as part of our celebrations during the year. The younger classes were buddied up with older classes to help them with the activities. Our aim was to highlight the importance and relevance of literacy to all aspects of life by linking reading to activities based around four areas: Sport, Games, Travel and The Arts. The students had to read instructions to decorate biscuits, follow a fitness circuit, make a clay pot, build a model car, paint Chinese characters, play word games, create passports and write group stories, along with many other challenges. Using computers, groups researched different countries in the world that speak French, were involved in mapping activities and created three dimensional models using drawing programs’. It was marvellous to observe the wonderful rapport between the older students and their younger partners as they worked together and moved around the school to participate in different activities and to share in the general excitement generated towards reading. Weekend Sunrise interviewed Year 2 students about technology use in the classroom.

Trinity on TV This term Trinity College has attracted TV crews for a number of reasons. Firstly the Lion Dance Troupe will feature on ‘Behind the News’ ABC TV because of their performances at the Royal Show and the ‘Oz Asia’ Festival. Filming was done on site during their rehearsals and also at the Adelaide Royal whilst they were in the Grand Parade. Secondly, Channel 7 ‘Weekend Sunrise’ program interviewed Year 2 North students and their teachers about technology use in the classroom. Students quickly demonstrated the use of laptops and their blogging skills to the amusement of reporter Julie Tran. ABOVE The Lion Dance Troupe are filmed by ABC TV during their weekly rehearsal.

Mini–Metric Olympics at Trinity

Healthy Hearts

Students in Year 4, at North, were recently treated to their own Mini Olympics. Both Year 4 classes combined and groups rotated through a circuit of mathematical challenges.

Blakeview was recently awarded a silver printed plaque acknowledging the school’s participation in ‘Jump Rope for Heart’ for over 10 years. Known as a Silver ‘Jump Rope for Heart’ School a huge thank you to Fiona Hutcheson (Head of Sport R-6) and the Blakeview Front Office staff who collected and processed funds this year of $5,847.20. Also supporting this cause was North which raised a further $6,280.75 this year. An outstanding effort by all students involved.

Tasks included Paper Plate Discus (measuring the distance of the throw in metres), Cotton Ball Shot-put (measuring the distance of the push in centimetres), Sponge Squeeze (measuring the water displaced in millilitres), Marble Grab (measuring the weight of the marbles in grams) and Straw Javelin (measuring the distance thrown in centimetres). The students were awarded Olympic medal stickers in bronze, silver and gold, as they completed each stage of the pentathlon. As a conclusion to the task each student was awarded a gold medal, which was ceremoniously placed around their neck. A very moving final moment was when the two classes, teachers and helpers all stood to sing the National Anthem. The students were so proud of their achievements and will hold onto the memory of that day in for years to come. Ruth Paton

Shining on the Stage Congratulations to the cast and crew of the 2012 Whole College Musical which was performed over 3 nights and a matinee during August. After months of rehearsals the staff and students showcased their singing and dancing talents with the stage production of “Me & My Girl”. This musical is set in the late 1930’s in Hampshire, Mayfair, and Lambeth. The musical had a successful original run on the West End in 1937 and successful revivals in both London and New York in the 1980s. The story is based on a family of haughty aristocrats seeking the legitimate heir to the title of Earl of Hareford. A Cockney from Lambeth is found and named as the long-lost “Earl of Hareford”. The production included great dance routines, brilliant comedy pieces and a wonderful array of costumes. The onstage cast comprised of 22 students which meant a number of dual roles for performers, challenging their talents and stamina. We look forward to another Whole College Musical production in 2013. Audrey Somerville, Jayan Mace, Anthony Cini & Melanie Harding The Production Team

Arts

Unlike artwork in a gallery, it is seen by all and is present in people’s everyday lives. Water Tank Becomes a Canvas For five weeks Year 9 Trinity College students worked with local artist, Joshua Smith, on a design to beautify an old water tank located on Uley Road, Blakeview with the endorsement of the City of Playford Council. Blakeview Year 9 art students researched street art and presented a written piece and mini street art piece in the style of their nominated artist. As part of the Council endorsement process, the students were required to inform the public as the project was completed at a public site, being the Uley Rd water tank at the Munno Para Football Club. The Year 9 class visited Narooma Nursing Home to work alongside residents and discuss their project with them. While the students were a little nervous at first, every student thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

ABOVE The Yarn Bombed water tank located near Tech Studies on the Gawler site by Libby Millar (Year 12).

Creative Arts Yarn Bombing is a modern and innovative form of art, that can be seen all over the world. It is diverse; its meaning is relevant to every culture. This I believe, after the completion of my Visual Study is the essence and the powerful impact that yarn bombing creates amongst society for every age.…..it is lively, it brings people together. Unlike artwork in a gallery, it is seen by all and is present in people’s everyday lives; everyday objects such as statues, cars, water tanks and street signs are transformed into something alien to people’s everyday norms. It’s been a personal experience, working with many different people. I am highly appreciative of the businesses and people who donated wool and contributed to the project and its purpose. A project of this size would never have come together without the passion that the people involved have for knitting, crochet and art. Positioned in the College grounds the yarn bomb is a testament to all those who did not turn away in disbelief when the large concrete water tank was pledged to be wrapped in wool. For everyone who saw the possibilities, the completed yarn bomb now stands for itself. Special thanks to the Hand Knitters Guild of South Australia, House of Yarn, knitalpaca, and Spotlight for donating wool. Much appreciation to the Hamley Bridge Hospital-Hostel, Joan Fischer and my Granny.Thank you for your support Mrs Russell, Miss Neagle and Mr Dale….. and of course every single person who crocheted or knitted a loop into the yarn bomb. Food for the Future

In January 2013 the first ever Trinity College Mission Trip will go to Cambodia. 12 Students will have the opportunity to travel for two weeks prior to school commencing and are looking forward to experiencing Cambodian culture and history. The mission team will be involved in hands on development, including a sanitation project (assisting with a toilet block and well), teaching English to a group of Year 10-12 students and spending time with local people.

A new planting project has commenced at our farm know as 20 Food Trees. The ‘Ag’ teaching team recruited expert advice with Adelaide TV personality and guru gardener, Milton Vadoulis who demonstrated how to successfully plant food trees with students. Trees included avocados, olives, figs, quince and pomegranate. These trees were planted in the northern section of paddocks two and three. With ease of access to our paddocks, caring for these plants will be incorporated into daily lessons.

Our team is blessed to have Lois Whittall as our host for the trip. Lois lectures in business management at Adelaide University and has been regularly travelling to Cambodia for the past 7 years. She is the coordinator of the Plas Prai education project which supports young women from rural areas through Years 10-12 and through to university. The Cambodia 2013 team is aiming to raise $12,000 to take with them to donate to the projects they are involved in. So they’ve been busy holding food and BBQ stalls, washing cars and putting together a Cakeless Cake Stall to raise these funds. ABOVE L-R: Bek Bayly (Year 7) and Esther Fechner (Year 7) go through their paces at the Gawler Show.

Gawler Show 2012 The Trinity College Show Team had another successful event at the Gawler Show this year. In the first two classes, the steers were assessed on their condition and fitness for market. In these classes, the Red Poll steer paraded by Natasha Rice (North) received a Commended Effort ribbon, the Murray Grey steer led by Wade Hogg (Blakeveiw) received a third place and the Limousin steer paraded by Esther Fechner (South) received a second place ribbon. In the hotly contested handler classes, the students were assessed on their ability to parade the steers correctly and present them to the judge. In the 17 years and above category, Heath Foster (Senior) was awarded a Commended Effort for his handling of the Murray Grey steer and Danielle Redman (Senior) received a second place with the Shorthorn Steer. In the 13 to 17 year old category, Lacey Brooks (North) received third place for the Hereford and Natasha Rice (North) received second place for the Red Poll steer. In the U13 years handlers class, Esther Fechner (South) received a Commended Effort for the Limousin steer, Quinn Hogg (Blakeveiw) received third place for the Shorthorn, and Bek Bayly (North) received first place for her exceptional handling of the Hereford steer.

Defence School Transition Aides (DSTA) and Defence Transition Mentors (DTM) are funded by the Department of Defence through Defence Community Organisation (DCO) and are employed as a member of the College staff by their respective schools. Trinity is fortunate to have a DTM role based across North, South and Senior schools, and a DSTA role based at North and South School. The roles were established to assist Defence Force children who experience difficulties transitioning into and out of a school upon posting or during parental absences due to deployment, exercises or courses. After all of the handler classes were finalised, the champions from each class were brought back into the ring and the overall Champion Handler was decided. In a very tight competition this year, the Champion Handler for 2012 was awarded to Bek Bayly. A new handler class was started this year whereby each school was given the opportunity to put forward their best handler and their best steer to compete. Danielle Redman (Senior) took out the Schools Led Steer Inaugural Prize in fine form this year with the Shorthorn. Overall, the Trinity College Show Team was awarded twelve ribbons and came second by one point to the University of Adelaide, Roseworthy College Team as most successful exhibiting school. Helping Others The North P & F have been collecting ‘Coles Sports for Schools’ dockets for the past three years. In the past two years the community collected over 140,000 dockets. This enabled us to purchase an amazing quantity of sporting equipment for the children to use. All the classrooms from Reception to Year 7 now have bags of equipment. It was decided that as we are advantaged by our large community this year we would donate the sporting equipment we receive as a result of this program to disadvantaged communities. Hence, the North Junior School is choosing a school in the APY lands to which we will give the sporting equipment that we receive from the 2012 docket collection. The Middle School will use their equipment to make packs to give to the ‘Little Heroes Foundation’ to support the families of sick children. Liz Hinrichsen

Trinity 4.9 (33) lost to Ballarat Grammar 5.11 (41).

Rhiana Hooker (Year 7) collected team gold in the Australian Road Walking Championships in Adelaide recently. The SA U14 Girls team won the team category. While Rhiana finished 12th overall in the 3km event, she was awarded the bronze medal on handicap.

After spotting the tall timber walking into the Ballarat Grammar stadium, we were a little nervous to say the least. Both teams started a little shakily, with some passing errors and poor communication. With a few changes made, we had a good turn around in the second quarter. Improved circle defence, better delivery into the goalies and more defensive pressure allowed us to hit the front by half time. A solid last half resulted in a 12 goal win. While Libby Millar earned herself the player of the match award, credit must go to our defenders who were well outdone for height, but managed numerous intercepts, rebounds and forced errors from their opponents. All girls combined well on the day and deserved the win. Carmen Gaskell

In very cold and muddy conditions our boys were very keen to play well, especially those who would be playing their last game for the College. The game started well with the first goal by the captain Daniel Elvin which was a great confidence builder for the boys. A lot of stoppages which suited our style of footy saw Trinity trail at half time 2-5 to Ballarat 2-6, was a credit to the boys. We needed a big third quarter to potentially set up a win. So much of the third quarter was played in our half but we missed a couple of shots on goal which should have been kicked. Ballarat were still leading 3-9 to 3-8. The final score was Ballarat 5-11 to Trinity 4-9 in a tough and physical game of footy. Mark Weaver

The Year 8/9 Football team (3rd), South Year 6 Basketball (2nd) and Open Basketball team (5th) made it through to the State finals. The footballers came agonisingly close to a grand final berth, losing narrowly to Henley High School, leaving coach David Schell to rue lost opportunities. While the basketballers went into the final without stars Angus Fischer (broken wrist) and Daniel Ebert (US High School). Coach Jye Watson adamant a full-strength Trinity College side would have come close to winning it all. The First XI soccer team was beaten 3-2 in the State Knockout Final by St Michael’s College. After leading 1-0 and 2-1, the Lions were unable to sustain their high level of play, and were overtaken by the fast-finishing St Michael’s. A great effort trying to defend their 2011 title. BELOW

Unique Programs The Trinity College Foundation Board is proud to assist Trinity students with two very special programs in 2012. Firstly, Operation Flinders which runs a world leading wilderness adventure program for students at risk. It takes students on an eight day exercise in the far northern Flinders Ranges, providing participants with a new direction in life and develop personal attitudes of self-esteem, leadership, motivation, team work and responsibility. Secondly, the Board was happy to support the students who have taken the initiative to establish the first overseas mission for Trinity College to Cambodia. ABOVE

STARplex

A variety of opportunities for current and former Trinity students to develop workplace skills and careers

Broadening Horizons Trinity students have been involved in umpiring, coaching, instructing, reception and administration duties, theatre and graphic design, hospitality and childcare. STARplex offers many ways in which our community can engage in Fitness, Wellness and Performance services. But have you ever thought of working in leisure and recreation? In the 12 years of operation, STARplex has provided a variety of opportunities for current and former Trinity students to develop workplace skills and careers. Trinity students have been involved in umpiring, coaching, instructing, reception and administration duties, theatre and graphic design, hospitality and childcare. For some it’s an opportunity to earn casual income or gain workplace skills while studying. For others this may be the start of their career in the recreation industry which ignites their passion for sports, fitness and helping others to achieve their goals. Two former Trinity College students explain: Beau Girdham, Personal Trainer: “I had two work experience placements at STARplex Fitness Centre where I learnt about all the different aspects of running the Centre. This encouraged me to study for my Certificate 3 in Fitness during Year 12.” Beau was also working out in the gym as a student member and has been a keen sportsman from an early age. He began work on the gym floor and in setting up programs for members. Continuing his studies he obtained his Australian Institute of Fitness qualification and undertook PUSH Training which allows him to be a personal trainer, delivering the personal training system operated at STARplex. Beau says he finds being a Personal Trainer a very rewarding job, “I get to help people achieve their goals and have confidence in themselves – I’ve been helping a client to look her best for her wedding and she’s lost 40 centimetres in total. Result.” Ramiah Simpson, Courts Coordinator & Coach: “Basketball is my passion. Working at STARplex helps keep me engaged and focussed on the game as I’m hoping to get scholarship offers to play US College Basketball next year.” Prior to finishing Year 12 Ramiah was coaching, umpiring and playing basketball socially at STARplex. “I like being around sports and recreation, coaching juniors and seeing them develop through all the stages. I coached one boy through our BADGE program and into the higher academy, who is now coaching. I’d like to think that I played a part in instilling his enthusiasm for the game.” Ramiah has gained qualifications in umpiring, Active After School Care Program, Senior First Aid and is now finishing off the Diploma of Management. “Being given the opportunity to broaden my skills in this way is really cool!!” Whatever their chosen direction STARplex employees need to show the right attitude, passion and appetite for ongoing learning – be that in Business, Sports Management, Exercise Physiology or sport specific.

His target was $10,000. Thanks to the generosity of the local community he reached the target only days before his departure

Old Scholars Updates Raffaele (Raff) Piccolo (2006) In late 2011 Amnesty International Australia sent an email to its supporters informing them of a new fundraising initiative they had developed; climbing Mount Kilimanjaro in 2012 to raise funds. In March 2012 Raff suddenly began to feel anxious once again as he realised that he had not done much by way of training or fundraising. He quickly put together a fundraising page, began to send out letters and started to train sporadically. His target was $10,000. Thanks to the generosity of the local community he reached the target only days before his departure. “The experience was amazing, and still a little surreal. It is a little hard to come to terms with the fact that one week I was in East Africa and the next I am back in Gawler” said Raff. Kurt Smith (2009) and Leigh Clarke (2009) and another friend are “South Coast” an Indie Folk/acoustic trio who have “stepped away from their rock covers to discover their own unique sound”. The band recorded a 5 song demo tape and they now perform regularly at local Adelaide venues such as ‘The Gov’. See the link below to a news story which has footage of Leigh talking about the tourism campaign. You Tube: www.youtube.com/watch?v=fJQVLElOAVE We enjoyed having them back to school recently as they entertained the Senior students during lunch hour.

Ben Harris (2009) in late April this year Ben (an Officer Cadet at ADFA) was part of a group that travelled to Turkey. He visited the Turkish Naval Academy in Istanbul, and was then attached to elements of Australia’s Federation Guard to attend the Anzac Day Services across the Gallipoli Peninsula. Lastly he visited the Turkish Naval Academy in the capital Ankara, with over 3000 cadets studying and training. Kerry Staight (1993) is an ABC reporter from the Landline Program. She has been presented with an international award for an investigative report on global food supplies. Kerry has won two awards at the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists Congress, held in Sweden. ‘Her Future of Food’ report received the international prize for Sustainable Agriculture Reporting, beating 18 other entries from across the world. Andrew Murray (2011), Jordan Gauci (2011) and Montana Bates (2011) are winners of the ‘Australian Vocational Student Prize’. The Australian Vocational Student Prize recognises outstanding commitment and achievements in the vocational education and training undertaken as part of the senior secondary certificate. Andrew was also selected from the five hundred Australian Vocational Student Prize winners to receive a Prime Minister’s Award for Skills Excellence in School. He is one of 20 Prime Minister’s Award Winners for 2011 which is a great accomplishment.
