This will assist the children or grandchildren of an Old Scholar who may need financial assistance to be able to experience a Trinity education. For today’s students the project will: • support and improve ‘Match Day Experience’ for Trinity College sport • improve the sports canteen • boost attendance at training/games • be an asset for school function use (ie House Dinners) • become a base for professional development/conferences • provide a flexible space for TCS and the R-10 schools • provide an excellent base for TCS/STARplex expansion • be able to host fundraising and community events.” Amazingly at the time of writing $42,000 has been pledged already since the launch! We are aiming for community/Old Scholar support in the vicinity of $100,000. The building of this Pavilion does not impact the timing or order of any other College building project as we are able to secure funding from a variety of sources. Having keen Old Scholars engage with the College and fundraise on our behalf is a very exciting development for the evolution of Trinity. While this type of building won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, the announcement has been very well received in the Old Scholar community and will be a really positive asset for Trinity. I hope the Pavilion and/or the Old Scholar Scholarship may be something you are interested in contributing to. Further details are available from the Development Office or the College website. I encourage Old Scholars to keep their details up to date so we can keep you up to speed on exciting developments across the College.

In March a group of Year 12 Trinity College Senior Child Studies students presented a variety of activities to the preschool children. Great thought had gone into the activities designed to demonstrate fun ways to be environmentally aware and recycle various materials. All the preschool staff enjoyed watching the interactions between the senior and preschool students and look forward to building on these links with more visits in the future.

Students in our Junior schools can participate in the Children’s University Program. Children’s University is a worldwide phenomenon supported in South Australia by the University of Adelaide. Representatives from the university addressed Years 4 to 6 students at all R to 10 schools explaining that membership (cost $25.00) is through a passport and children can accumulate credits for attending specified Trinity co-curricular activities as well as external activities such as those at the art gallery, museum or zoo held in the holidays or on weekends.

Year 3 Blakeview has been trialling the use of the Class Dojo App to motivate students and communicate with parents. Through the use of the timeline feature, we have been able to upload photos and video clips, showing parents what their child is learning in the classroom in real-time. Our parents have been engaging in their child’s learning and we have found that it has facilitated helpful and purposeful conversations about their day. At the end of each week, we look forward to scrolling through our feed, as a class and reviewing the week that was. Class Dojo has also worked to encourage students by awarding them points for certain positive behaviours. We have linked these to Character Strengths which has allowed students to identify their top strengths and how they can be used in the classroom environment to benefit their learning.

No need to panic about returning books, after 28 days they drop off your device and all books are FREE for students. Students with dyslexia can adapt e-books very easily through a menu selection. They can change the font, font size, increase the spaces between letters, increase the spaces between words, increase the space between lines and the background colour. If the device has the capacity, you can also engage ‘text to read’ and hear the book read aloud to you.

LAP Update The LAP Mentoring Program is now one year old across the College! During this time, LAP has become a valued addition to the support and education of our students. More than 80 students from Early Years to Year 11 across the College are now receiving weekly one-to-one mentoring from a caring, committed community or senior student Volunteer Mentor. ABOVE Connor Peacock (Year 6) and Aiden Horner (Year 6) enjoy Code Club.

Code Club Code Club originated in the United Kingdom as a not-for-profit organisation aimed at giving primary school children the opportunity to code. In 2014, Code Club Australia was formed and Trinity College Blakeview established one of the first clubs in Australia as a co-curricular opportunity for primary students. Now in our third year, on average 20 students gather weekly, to learn to code using the open source programming tool of Scratch. Participants work through a progression of projects, in a block format, developing a sequence of skills in animation and game development. Many participants have created additional games and animations in their own time or created a ‘mash’ of several ideas to add their own unique twist to the basic foundation. The computational thinking, problem solving (debugging) and collaboration that students engage in with their projects are the skills encouraged for future schooling and possibly careers. Sue Urban

Everyone Belongs

We’d like to sincerely thank our amazing group of Volunteer Mentors for the time and talents they bring to the program and for the positive difference they are making every week. In 2016, we are delighted to be the recipients of a “Parents in Education” (PIE) grant from the Government of South Australia which will ensure the continued success and growth of the program and assist in the care of our students and Volunteer Mentors. The LAP Mentoring Program provides a fun, creative learning experience. It is always conducted on a one-to-one basis, and provides an opportunity for personal growth, confidence building and positive connections for both the student and the Volunteer Mentor. We are always looking for volunteers. If you have one hour a week you can donate to your school, please contact your school’s LAP Coordinator via your Front Office and make a difference in someone’s day! Gawler River was bathed in a sea of orange as it once again recognised Harmony Day. It’s a day to celebrate our cultural diversity. It’s about inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. Harmony Day coincides with the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. This year marks 50 years since the declaration of the day. This year’s specific theme was ‘our diversity is our strength’ and we were encouraged to acknowledge three key areas: • coming together to celebrate our cultural diversity • sharing the economic benefits of our productive diversity • highlighting how innovation in a multicultural Australia contributes to our shared future. One of the positive outcomes of the day was evident in Dawkins House. Mr Fienemann showed his tutorial group a TED talk by Michael Gavin, Associate Professor at Colorado State University, which discussed the loss of language, history and culture (cultural diversity) in the Pacific Islands and Indigenous communities in Australia.

Sophie Arthur (Year 12) is studying in Finland as part of a Rotary Exchange sponsored by the Gawler Light Club. Her February host family also have a son 15 and daughter 17. She is studying Gymnasium and English, two different maths courses (trigonometric functions and graphing unit) cellular biology plus language classes twice a week. She will change subjects after eight weeks. Sophie said “Language camp was amazing and possibly the greatest start here I could’ve asked for. The weather was nice for the first week or so (very cold but the snow was dry which is nice) but then it started raining so the snow started to melt and everything was just very icy which meant that walking anywhere was quite the task. Of course, most Finnish people (that I have observed) are very quiet. For instance I was on a tram in Helsinki and it was almost full yet silent.” Sophie will spend 12 months in Finland as part of the exchange.

Kitchen Garden Gawler River began its Kitchen Garden Program almost two years ago and has accomplished a great deal in that time. Students participate in experiential learning such as planting, weeding, picking, fertilising and managing produce stalls. Reverend Ruth Mathieson uses Kitchen Garden produce to run a cooking group every Friday to increase students’ knowledge about healthy eating as well as strengthening teamwork skills. In accordance with the 2016 Strategic Plan, students learn about sustainable practice including food production and water conservation.

On Friday 4 March Trinity North Middle School held a World’s Greatest Shave event to raise awareness and fundraise for the Leukaemia Foundation. Students could shave, cut or colour their hair for a small donation. Angas House Captain, Kelsey Craig (Year 10) volunteered to cut 20cm off her hair in a bid to raise money. Independently she raised over $500.00. Additionally, Enrique Bisbal (Year 9) and Joshua Taylor (Year 7) challenged Mr Tom Hancock. If they could raise $100.00 each Mr Hancock would shave his head too. Through a variety of fundraising ideas and the assistance of other House members the students easily made this target. Students in the Middle School also had to opportunity to colour their hair with House colours to add to the money raised by all three students. As a school they raised over $1000.00 dollars towards the Leukaemia Foundation, congratulations North Middle School on your fantastic efforts.

Faith in Action

Our church family is continuing to build strong links between the church and Trinity community. St Francis Celebrates This year St Francis Anglican Church celebrates our 25th birthday! The Chapel/Fine Arts Centre was officially opened on Sunday 26 May 1991 and soon afterwards a Sunday congregation began meeting there. Construction of the Chapel building was only made possible through generous pledges of funds from many families within the Trinity community. With the opening of the Trinity Chapel came the birth of St Francis Anglican Church. Fr Alan Courtney served as both Trinity College Chaplain and Parish Priest to the new congregation. The aim of this congregation was to welcome and encourage Trinity staff and families in the life and community of the Christian faith. St Francis has always provided an easy introduction into the life of a Christian community for people who have no church background. Over the past 25 years; Alan Courtney, Paul Hunt, Philip Southwell, Tony Nicholls and Craig Loveday have all sought to honour God serving as Chaplains and Priests for the St Francis Congregation. Numerous school families have connected with St Francis through children’s and youth ministries, Bible studies and fellowship groups as well as in baptisms, confirmations, weddings and funerals. Trinity staff have also been blessed to have St Francis Church as their spiritual haven through the years.

The congregation of St Francis has maintained a close connection with the Trinity community by sharing in the lives and hopes of students and their families. These days our church family continues to be a people passionate about Jesus’ love. We have a special focus on being God’s community, knowing and sharing the Good News of Jesus. Our church family is continuing to build strong links between the church and Trinity community through Kidz Club, a youth group and participation in College events. The St Francis community wholeheartedly supports the Trinity College aims, because we believe each individual student and staff member is created uniquely by God - precious and full of potential. So it’s our joy to spend lots of time in prayer asking God to bring the aims of the College to reality. You are invited to join us as we meet in the heart of Trinity College on Sundays at 10:00am. To celebrate 25 years of God’s grace to St Francis Anglican Church there will be a special service of thanksgiving on Trinity Sunday, Sunday 22 May. This will be followed by a special morning tea and a staff luncheon at the Prince Albert Hotel. Craig Loveday

St Francis Chaplain

Over 25 Years of St Francis Church we have... Baptised 211 people, had Bishops visit to confirm 94 people in the Christian faith, celebrated 31 weddings and sought God’s comfort at 21 funerals.

Visual Arts – Making Connections A recent Guggenheim study into ‘The Art of Problem Solving’ found that arts education helps students develop skills necessary to persistently and adaptively work through problems. The art museum provides a superior set of stimuli in which students and objects are brought together to engage in slow looking. Visiting works of art in situ provide opportunities for students to slow down, concentrate, to think like an artist, focus on formal elements, consider how objects have been made and analyse their function within its intended context. This process of experiencing an artwork exceeds all other strategies and underpins the procedure of solving any problem in any discipline. The Art Department has fostered positive relationships with the Art Gallery of South Australia (AGSA), consequently widening the opportunities for our art students to view works of art. Most recently the Year 11 and Year 10 (North) Visual Art classes visited AGSA for a private viewing of works by Jeffrey Smart and John Brack, respectively. Works not currently on display were removed from storage for students to view paintings and preparatory work, analyse their formal elements using arts language and conduct observational drawing, thus encouraging slow looking.

their newly established Neo program. While working alongside professionals at the art gallery, students will build their confidence and practice the skill of looking closely at works of art. Finally, the Stage 2 Visual Arts class viewed Magic Object at AGSA followed by an intensive workshop at Adelaide Central School of Art facilitated by artist and lecturer Luke Thurgate. This provided students with a starting point for their folios, encouraging experimentation and problem solving. By focusing on artists Nell and Michael Zavros, students were able to see a range of technical ability and consider artist intent unified by a common theme. This has built on their prior experience of ‘art making’ and ‘learning to look’ further developing their understanding of artist and audience as well as considering alternatives and reflecting on artists’ processes. Our continued partnership with arts institutions across the state will endure, consequently providing students with ways in which they connect to the wider arts community. Very few alternatives can provide students with the opportunity to develop and foster their confidence, curiosity, imagination and enjoyment like the experience of viewing art in a gallery.

A select number of Stage 2 Visual Art students also attended a Curatorial Insight event at AGSA in conjunction with Magic Object Kylie Neagle and led by curator, Lisa Slade. In addition, AGSA have invited these Head of Arts students to be a part of initial training to become teen guides for

The 2016 Yamaha National Band Championships has been declared a great success by our community, bands, soloists, adjudicators, officials and visitors alike. Hosting the event at the College and STARplex was an inspired choice by the organisers with everyone embracing the championship with much enthusiasm.

Trinity came second overall out of four bands in the C Grade Open Concert Band Division, with a total score of 405 (the winning band achieved 408). A highlight of the event was the Parade of Bands performance along Murray Street on the Saturday morning, live streamed across the world.

The Fence Project

TCS Music Night

ABOVE The Senior Concert Band Clarinet Section prepare for TCS Music Night

You may have noticed the yellow, red and blue silhouettes of students that grace the fence by the roundabout on Alexander Avenue. These were produced by North Year 10 Digital Photography students in Semester 2 last year with funding from the College Principal, Mr Nick Hately. The class was given the task of identifying some of the many options available to students at Trinity College and then photographing these activities taking place. Students learned how to create vectors from their photographs, using Adobe Illustrator. Each student then printed their vectors and the class discussed the ten images they thought were the most successful. Students were asked to consider clarity of communication, overall appearance and the diversity of the designs. Nick Hately then cast his vote and seven images were produced by Anna Small, an Adelaide-based sculptor.

The result is a dynamic, collaborative artwork that brightens an otherwise purely functional space and also helps to promote the diversity of subjects and activities undertaken at the College. I am very proud of the efforts of my students and hope that they are too. Funding has been approved for this project to occur again. This Semester, Digital Photography students have new vectors and the final Trinity colour (white) will be included in this piece. It is anticipated the new silhouettes will be installed by the end of this Semester. Adele Turner

The Stage 2 Ensemble Performance students were assessed on their performance at the Music Night as their first summative SACE assessment. Performing for an audience of family and friends ensured outstanding results. Seating was at tables in cabaret style, guests brought their own food and drinks. Sports Swimmers Continue Golden Era

Despite the conditions Trinity College was impressive in intensity, ball movement and support.

Sport Shorts

Trinity College swimmers have continued their run of outstanding success claiming the overall (boys and girls) A1 State Championship for the third-successive year. This was seen as a rebuilding year for the group with several talented swimmers either graduating or unavailable. In recent years, Trinity has dominated school swimming winning three girls, two boys and two combined championships in a row but the team faced a significant challenge to defend their titles this year. College Swimming Coordinator, Dr Keith Heinrich was very pleased with the group, particularly the boys’ result, as the College was very short on numbers in some age groups. They finished third behind Sacred Heart and Prince Alfred College. The girls, conversely, continue to have healthy numbers and deep talent and fought to the wire with Seymour College to take second place. The combined scores for both boys and girls then gave us the combined title. Trinity held off traditional rivals Immanuel College and Sacred Heart to claim their third title in a row. Congratulations to all.

2016 Ballarat Exchange The annual Trinity College/Ballarat Grammar Exchange was another resounding success and was enjoyed by all participants. Both our netball and football teams were well matched by their Ballarat contemporaries and games were fast paced and competitive. The Trinity First XVIII Football Team defeated Ballarat Grammar 11.10 (76) to 4.3 (27) in their first hit out for the year. The conditions were difficult, with strong winds and intermittent rain playing a significant role in the game. Despite the conditions Trinity College were impressive in intensity, ball movement and support. While our netballers fought hard in a tight game, Ballarat ultimately took the win by a slim margin 34 to 31. A great first hit out and team effort for the netballers. The trip was a great opportunity to find some effective combinations with some outstanding individual performances.

Celebrating Our Loyal Members It was lovely to see so many familiar faces at the STARplex VIP Members Night. Fitness Centre members who have held a consecutive membership for over five years were invited to attend to celebrate and allow us the opportunity to thank them for their loyalty.

A record number of teams (120) from around the state competed in the thirteenth annual STARplex Australia Day Basketball Tournament. A large contingent of teams representing the state metropolitan basketball association were also present including our own local club Central District Lions.

Recent fitness industry statistics indicate after joining a gym many people will not maintain a membership for much longer than 12 months. However, STARplex can proudly boast a loyal group of members who have been with the centre since we opened in 2000 when our total membership was 400. In 2016 our membership has grown to 1528.

With over 45 teams and 10 divisions, the STARplex Preseason Netball Carnival was recently held over two days in March. Teams come from as far away as Clare in the North to the South of Adelaide. With a mixture of teams playing in the grand finals it was great to see the close competition.

Anne Powell was referred to STARplex by her doctor because she was overweight and diabetic. Through persistence and determination Anne turned around her diabetes, lost weight and is one of our most passionate and enthusiastic members!

2015 marked the tenth year for TOSFC which was celebrated at a Ball and the naming of the ‘Team of the Decade’.

It’s been another exciting and eventful year for the Trinity Old Scholars Cricket Club. At the end of last season we said goodbye to some key leadership veterans, making way for only our third ever captain Alex Cotter (2009) to take over the responsibilities. We had many successes starting with another 20/20 Final where we just fell short of We were lucky enough to celebrate on the making a semi final. He is one of our President, 0422 729 911 first life members playing 150 club games and is a general historian of the club. He has truly been a great asset to the club. Looking forward to this year TOSFC has been very busy over the off-season, recruiting a number of quality players that will help build on the A grade’s qualifying final result last year. The influx of players at the higher level will also provide the B grade a great opportunity to go back to back. Meanwhile the C grade will be looking to return to finals action this year as it welcomes new coach Matt Young to the club. Matt will be taking over from Jason Scott who took the team to a grand final two years ago. Although the season is about to start, TOSFC always welcomes new players, umpires and volunteers. The club is very encouraging of any current students who would like to come out to training and even play the odd game during the holidays. Please contact the club if you are interested in joining TOSFC. Carl Teusner (2006)

The club celebrated 20 years with a dinner at the Gawler Jockey Club in August 2015. It was fantastic to see a number of players attending from our very first team. Our 2015 season was uneventful for our Mens A Grade team, finishing low on the ladder. However the B Grade Women had a very successful season but lost their grand final. We have entered both men and women in the B grade competition for 2016. The season commenced Saturday 9 April. Training is underway on the Trinity College library pitch. Quiz night fundraiser planning is also underway. We are always looking for more players, if you are interested please contact me. Thomas Gregory (2009) President, 0431 861 165
