What are wrinkle or folds and where does it come from?

As we age, our skin loses volume and elasticity. This can occur on cheeks, around the eyes, on the forehead and in the mouth area, thereby creating wrinkles.

A wrinkle is basically a fold, ridge or crease in the skin and can be a by product of many factors. As we age the skin becomes less elastic, weaker and thinner. The fat layers under the skin lose volume and the muscles get smaller. In addition gravity and muscles play their part on the skin, creating a wrinkled appearance.

The aging process occurs as our skin becomes depleted of natural substances such as collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid, all of which provide structure and volume. This, combined with environmental factors such as a lifetime of exposure to sunlight, smoking and stress contribute to the creation of wrinkles and folds.

HOW DO LIPS CHANGE WITH AGE? As with the skin, lips become depleted of substances that provide structure. Lips are particularly vulnerable as they have an extremely thin outer layer, which only becomes progressively thinner as our bodies age. Over time the corners of the mouth can begin to drop (mouth frown), the v-shape

area of the upper lip (known as Cupid’s Bow) begins to flatten out and lips lose their youthful fullness. Vertical lip lines may begin to form for both smokers and non-smokers.

DEFINING YOUR WRINKLES AND CHOOSING THE BEST TREATMENT A wrinkle, also known as a rhytide, is a fold, ridge or crease in the skin. Skin wrinkles typically appear as a result of aging processes such as glycation, habitual sleeping positions, loss of body mass, or temporarily, as the result of prolonged immersion in water. Age wrinkling in the skin is promoted by habitual facial expressions, aging, sun damage, smoking, poor hydration, and various other factors. COARSE WRINKLES – STATIC WRINKLES: Broad, deep wrinkles are associated with skin photo-aging (sunlight) and also smoking & general aging. Coarse wrinkles can develop anywhere on the face but are usually seen as cheek wrinkles, forehead wrinkles and neck wrinkles. FOLDS & GROOVES – COMBINATION WRINKLES As we age the fat layer under the skin thins and causes loss of volume in the face, creating a drooping effect. This is can be marked as folds and grooves following the lines between the nostril and corners of mouth (nasolabial fold), as well as marionette folds. These wrinkles are also affected by muscle activity. Lips can be enhanced or restored with one single treatment or by using a combination of therapies including:Fillers, Exilis™, Fraxel™, etc. and are best discussed with a practitioner well versed on the benefits of all your options. VOLUMIZERS & FILLERS are injectable products that are used to correct wrinkles by injecting into the skin. The most common products used are hyaluronic acid based such as Juvederm, Restylane, Teosyal to name a few. In addition there are also fillers that we call collagen builders. These work by building your own collagen over time, decreasing the wrinkling that occurs in the skin.
