Atlanta University (1865) was the nation’s first African-American graduate school and Clark College (1869), was the first private, liberal arts institution in the nation to award baccalaureate degrees to primarily African-Americans. The consolidation of these two institutions to form Clark Atlanta University in 1988 “Charted a Bold New Future.” CAU continues to serve as a beacon of access and opportunity. Congratulations on your acceptance to Clark Atlanta University (CAU)! Below are the next steps to complete the CAU admissions process. As an international student, you will need to have proof of funds. This funding can be through you or a sponsor; the funding can also be in the form of scholarship or assistantship. Proof of Funding: International students are required to provide proof of funding to cover expenses for tuition and fees; living expenses, health insurance; and dependent costs (if applicable). Students in F-1 status or applying for F-1 status must provide official documentary evidence (e.g., assistantship/scholarship letter; personal/family bank statements; affidavit of support) to show adequate funding to meet all expenses for the first year of study. Q: How Do I Apply for Financial Aid? To be considered for all types of aid at Clark Atlanta University, your first step is to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at: www.studentaid.gov and release it to Clark Atlanta University (Federal Code: 001559). This form should be completed as soon as possible with a priority deadline of February 1st. Your FAFSA information determines your eligibility for a broad range of financial aid. In addition, there are a few sources of aid such as unsubsidized Stafford and PLUS loans that are available regardless of need. Q: Why Should I Meet the Priority Deadline? By meeting the priority deadline, you have a better chance of receiving campus-based funding, i.e. FSEOG and Work-Study. These programs are limited in funding (determined by U.S. Department of Education), and annual awards to eligible students are based on meeting the priority deadline of February 1. Thereafter, awards are made on a first-come basis. Q: How Do I Apply for Work-Study? You must complete the FAFSA and meet all the deadlines for supporting documentation. The priority deadline is February 1. Once the CAU Financial Aid Office receives your FAFSA information, you will be evaluated for financial need and a financial aid package will be determined. This package may include Federal Work-Study. In order to initiate the process for Work-Study (if it is included on your financial aid package), you must attend the Work -Study Orientation. Q: How Much Will I Owe the University? To determine how much you owe the University, subtract your direct cost from certain financial aid offered (all financial aid offered cannot be included). A PLUS Loan cannot be included unless the parent borrower has applied for the loan and the lender has approved it. College Work-Study cannot be included because the funds must be earned after job placement. The University has no control over the student’s potential earnings. Outside scholarships will be treated as a resource until the University receives the funds. If you are a recipient of an outside scholarship, we encourage you to have the donor remit the funds to the University as soon as possible. You are liable to the University should any outside funds not be received by the University. Q: How Do I Pay the Balance Not Covered by Financial Aid? The University has made arrangements with several private agencies to offer alternative funding options to our students ranging from monthly payment plans to low-cost private loans. We encourage you to explore these options several weeks in advance of the beginning of the term should you find yourself in need of additional funding options. Because these are private sources, you need to allow ample time for processing.

Frequently Asked Questions HOUSING Q: How will you assign me to a room? New students (both transfer and first time freshmen) will be administratively assigned to a room based on their selected major by the Office of Residence Life and Student Development. Students are housed this way to develop our Living Learning Communities (LLCs). Students will log on to the housing portal to complete an application after their Confirmation fee (for new students) or Room Reservation fee (returning students) is paid.
Q: What's in my room? Traditional Style (Merner Hall, Holmes Hall, Pfeiffer Hall and Beckwith Hall) rooms contain two beds, two desks, two chairs, and two closets/wardrobes. Internet access is provided. Suite Style (CAU Suites) rooms contain two beds, two desks, two chairs, two closets/wardrobes and refrigerator and microwave. Internet access is provided. Apartment Style (Brawley Hall and Heritage Commons) room contain a bed, desk, dresser, chair, closet or wardrobe. Residents who choose to live in Brawley Hall or Heritage Commons will share a living room, kitchen and bathroom.
Q: What is the housing policy? All undergraduate students with fewer than 58 earned credit hours are required to reside in on-campus housing. For first-time freshmen, on-campus housing is defined as residency in Holmes Hall, Merner Hall, Pfeiffer Hall, Beckwith or the CAU Suites. Student Accounts How do I Pay? Financial Aid, Scholarships, Payment Plan, Credit Card, Money Order, Cashier’s Check We realize that many families are required to look beyond personal resources in order to make attending CAU a reality. For this reason, we encourage families to consider all student and parent federal aid options. Parents of dependent undergraduate students may borrow the Parent PLUS Loan to help their children pay for college. The Parent PLUS Loan offers a fixed interest rate and flexible loan limits. A credit application is required and not all families will be approved. Institutional scholarships for new students are merit based and included in your financial aid award, if selected as a recipient. Most new students will not receive an intuitional award, so we encourage all students to register and apply for support at UNCF.org. Many of our students receive support from one or more of their programs. Families may take advantage of the payment plan. The plan opens on July 1, 2021. Frequently Asked Questions INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS 1. I have been admitted to Clark Atlanta University. When will I receive my I-20? After notification of admissions, a designated school official from The Office of International Programs (OIP) contacts students to provide the next steps and required documentation for obtaining the CAU I-20. Students should submit their documentation as soon as possible to the OIP to ensure sufficient time to obtain their student visas. The information and documentation required for issuance of the CAU I-20 are: • Completion of the CAU I-20 Request Form • Financial documentation that shows evidence of sufficient funds to meet the costs for tuition, fees, housing, health insurance, transportation and dependents’ care (if applicable). OIP cannot issue the CAU I-20 until financial documentation is received and verified. • Copies of the students’ biographical pages of passports and any accompanying dependents (if applicable). Once this documentation is received and reviewed in the OIP, the CAU I-20 is generally processed within five (5) business days and shipped or mailed to the address provided on the CAU I-20 Request Form. If requested, the I-20 can be released to a family member or friend. Written authorization from the student is required and a valid photo identification is required from the authorized person receiving the document. 2. I received my CAU I-20, how do I obtain my student visa? The process to obtain the F-1 student visa after receipt of the CAU I-20 begins with payment of the SEVIS (I-901) fee. The payment link can be accessed here: http://www.fmjfee.com Students who plan to have their spouses or children reside in in the USA with them while they study, should note that their dependents are required to have an individual Form I-20, but they do not have to pay a SEVIS I-901 fee to obtain the F-2 visa. They are only required to pay the visa fees. 3.
After payment of the SEVIS fee, proceed to http://usembassy.gov to find the nearest US embassy to you to schedule a visa appointment I am a transfer student from a U.S. School and my F-1 visa is still valid. Am I still required to submit financial documentation? Yes. All new transfer international students are required to submit financial documentation to verify sufficient funds to meet the cost of attendance.

Do I have to attend the New International Student Orientation? Yes. The New International Student Orientation is mandatory for all new international students. In addition to assisting students with their transition to CAU, the New International Student Orientation provides the designated school officials in the OIP to complete the check-in process required for reporting purposes to the Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP).

Does CAU offer any financial assistance to international students? Need based financial aid and student loans are offered through the US National Financial Aid Program—FAFSA. International students are not eligible for this program.

Can I study part-time? No. International students are required by federal immigration regulations to maintain full-time enrollment. There are limited exceptions to this requirement. Undergraduate students are required to register for a minimum of 12 semester hours and graduate students are required to register for a minimum of nine semester hours at Clark Atlanta to be considered full-time.

A dedicated staff of professionals and extensively trained student leaders runs our New Student Orientation program. The top priority at New Student Orientation is finalizing steps to become financially enrolled for the fall semester. The top goal of each NSO session is to make you and your family feel right at home the moment you step on campus.
INTERNATIONAL NEW S T U D E N T O R I E N T A T I O N International student orientation is designed to assist nonimmigrants with the transition to study in the United States, particularly in the Atlanta University Center—Clark Atlanta University. Information on registration, enrollment, student services, health services, academic resources and maintenance of status for immigration purposes are reviewed during orientation.
