History of the Festival
For one glorious week in springtime, Winchester, Virginia is host to the world-renowned springtime extravaganza known as the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®. One of the oldest civic organizations in the Old Dominion, the festival is about to embark upon its 94th celebration, beginning April 23rd and ending May 2nd. The original idea for the inaugural festival was to celebrate the passing of winter’s hardships with the glory of springtime and the miles of pink and white apple blossoms that blanket the Virginia apple-growing belt. Since its humble beginning in 1924, the festival has enjoyed tremendous growth and prestige and has become an anticipated homecoming to residents and visitors alike. The Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival® is as American as apple pie and draws estimated crowds of more than 200,000 to the area. This year we are honored to have as our 2021 Sports Marshal Washington Redskins, Ring of Fame Quarterback, Joe Theismann, join our long list of nationally known celebrities. Celebrities of past festivals include Hines Ward, Cal Ripken Jr, Dan Marino, Mario Lopez, Jim Belushi, Barry Sanders and Johnny Bench. Legends like Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Bing Crosby, Patsy Cline, Mary Tyler Moore, Hal Linden, President Gerald Ford, Chevy Chase, George Hamilton and Wayne Newton have also been among the festival’s attendees The Apple Blossom celebration takes over the entire town. After the pandemic cancelled our 2020 events, we want everyone to know that we are “Back in Bloom!” This year our volunteers have been working extra hard and following state guidelines we will host 21 events. Of course, we plan on having a full 40 plus events in 2022. Many of our events this year will be hosted outdoors at the Tolley Dental Zone at the Frederick County Fairgrounds. We’re welcoming you home to springtime in the Shenandoah at the 94th Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival®. For updated information visit www.thebloom.com.
