Kitty Ferreira – don’t throw away your pomegranate or onion skins, wear them!
Officially launched in September 2013, womenswear designer Valerie Goode for Kitty Ferreira is an ethical and sustainable boutique brand producing an elegant collection made from upcyled fabrics and luxury silks, eco- dyed by hand with pomegranate and onion skins. Kitty Ferreira sources exclusively in the UK. Valerie is keen on supporting UK manufacturing and having zero carbon footprint. The womenswear brand merges the use of ethical values with high end finishing, providing a delicate and sophisticated collection perfect for the spring and summer of 2014. “Ethical fashion has never looked so exciting, so wearable. I like the idea that each piece can easily slot into your existing wardrobe, dressed up or down for work and play. That is the beauty, that it is not obviously ethical or made in a sustainable way; she (the customer) is quietly confident after all. I like to think that fashion can transcend an era, style, but tell a story based on values.” Valerie is of Caribbean descent, and believes in embracing her culture though the Kitty Ferreira brand; the name is derived from her grandmother. “My grandmother had a mini farm in her yard. With a cockerel, hens and small pigs. My parents when they came to this country, brought that self-sufficiency with them, growing herbs, fruits and vegetables in our garden. Living in a city, owning a garden is seen as a luxury so naturally less and less people know and understand the value of growing their own produce. It seemed fitting I infuse food with this collection; naming a couple of pieces after herbs we use in daily cooking e.g. Saffron Shirt, Cinnamon Shirt” Trained at the London College of fashion , Valerie has worked for several suppliers to mid market retailers across multi-products also with Product Development experience at Burberry, and as a Senior Designer based in China. “Upcycling is a little more eco friendly than recycling. It’s about turning waste fabrics or end of lines into new products of better quality and environmental impact. Essentially these fabrics have been saved from entering landfills. We are looking at implementing a holistic ‘cradle to cradle ‘ approach and working with food outlets and supermarkets to utilise their fruit and veg waste.” Kitty Ferreira clothing will soon be located in deluxe boutiques all around London.
