The fourth annual Catmasters Tournament takes place at Possum Kingdom Lake the weekend of October 16-17, 2020. Enthusiasts from all over the country are expected. Last year, PK hosted 200 boats from 24 states including California, to Montana and Florida. This tournament is a welcomed boost to the fall “off season” on the lake. “This is a weekend hosted by many in the community,” explains Bryan St. Ama, Chamber board member and local dock contractor, “we all put in an effort.” Visitors enjoy the lake and its residents for their kindness and family-friendly environment, and of course, natural beauty. October is tough fishing for Possum Kingdom Lake which is a testament to the people of PK and the success of this tournament. Serious anglers and teams come from all over also for the large payout, $30,000 to the winning team. Contestants weigh in their top five catches on each of the two days. The highest total takes home the grand prize. Last weekend’s tourney winner in Arkansas weighed in at a total of over 131 pounds. Despite the climate of our country, this year’s tournament has already gained momentum and attracted excitement. To date, there are 105 teams competing. Catfish angling is the fastest growing competition in the south, despite the historic popularity of bass fishing. Bringing in a big cat is fun! They’re rowdy and big, and they are quick to bite. SHINING FACES OF PK
John and Jannet McCracken adapted biography originally provided by Kimmi Barker
In 1980, John and Jannet McCracken packed up their four children to move to beautiful Possum Kingdom from Kansas for the beautiful outdoors and active economy. For decades the family had vacationed on Possum Kingdom Lake where John had spent time with his grandfather and cousins fishing and camping. A mutual love for the outdoors meant this small lake community fulfilled John and Jannet’s daily aspirations and livelihood. Both John and Jannet were deeply involved in 4H and Boy Scouts. A lifelong desire to lead and create was shared, and these life skills were commonplace in the McCracken household. The family’s dedication to community was so strong, when the family made the move to Texas, other families chose to follow. Together with John, they created McCracken Construction Company, and eventually, PK Industries, McCracken Boat Shop, McCracken Gas Dock, and Lakeview Lodge. Their influence and leadership skills extended to other local businesses, as well. John and Jannet were founding members of the Possum Kingdom Lake Chamber of Commerce. In addition Jannet, John and family organized and oversaw the Mardi Gras celebration for twenty years (Jannet designed all the Mardi Gras t-shirts, too). They worked together to support the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, Strut Your Mutt Dog Show, Pirates of PK, Perch Jerk, Halloween Truck or Treat, as well as, provided support to the local Boy Scouts, and worked with the Texas Parks and Wildlife creating fish habitats. They planted a pine tree, decorated
annually to be used as the site for Children’s Christmas with Santa. The couple are charter members of Hell’s Gate Bass Club and more mutually experience traditions that symbolize the community identity today. John and Jannet, and now, extended family and friends, continue to make a difference here. Their influence will be felt here for generations, as this strong family marches on.
