How to End Your Year Strong

A

Brought to you by Tennova Medical Group

s the end of the year approaches, don’t fall into the same old trap of eating too much, exercising too little and making generally poor health decisions because you’re stressed and feeling rushed. Try these tips this holiday season:

• Avoid fast food while running errands by having a healthy snack before you leave home. • Focus on the people — not the food — at holiday parties. The more time you spend interacting with others, the less time you’ll spend snacking. • Make time for exercise so you can work off holiday treats and stress. • Use any remaining dental, medical or vision insurance benefits — or flexible spending account (FSA) funds — you have before they expire at the end of the year.

TALK OF THE TOWN “It's the talk of the town,” Mayor Joe Pitts said, as we discussed the recently proposed multi-purpose event center (MPEC). Though not completely without opposition, it seems the majority of Clarksvillians are in favor of the new complex. “I'm grateful to Mayor Durrett and the Montgomery County Commission for taking the lead on MPEC,” Pitts said. “This will be a regionally-known destination.” MPEC will occupy the block between 1st and 2nd, Main and College, and has already inspired the announcement of some sizable ancillary projects. So, what will take place inside MPEC, and how will it affect downtown growth? “Well, inside the facility, APSU men's and women's basketball will be played,” Pitts said. “There will also be space for 2 sheets of ice for hockey, whether for a minor league team, Predators exhibition games or youth leagues. It will also

be designed to accommodate events, concerts, shows, things like that.”

he presented it to the commissioners and the public.”

Pitts says MPEC will not just locally, but regionally generate tax revenue and interest in the community, even beyond state lines.

“He had all the details buttoned down. He cast the vision and then had the numbers to back it up. He welcomed all comments and had overwhelming support. This got 17 affirmative votes in the County Commission.” Pitts said.

“When the media covers events at MPEC, the city of Clarksville will be mentioned. The economics look very good, but more importantly this will provide entertainment for our citizens, so they won't have to go to Nashville or other communities.” The price tag, somewhere north of $100 million, can be hard for some to fathom, of this, Pitts is certainly aware. “$105 million is a lot of money at my house,” Pitts acknowledged. “But, Mayor Durrett has had a talented team of professionals who made sure the financial plan was solid and credible before

Clarksville Living

“Clarksville will participate in making sure the infrastructure and utilities are adequate to serve the location,” Pitts said. “We have to provide adequate services, water, electricity, natural gas, etc. The private development that has been proposed includes a parking structure. And the city is talking about a parking structure as well, next to City Hall. The city is also working on a plan to purchase the building that houses The Roxy Theatre.

“We are working on the financing plan,” Pitts said. “Before we move forward we want to make sure it's going to work. We want to make sure the Roxy as an organization is viable and stable.” “They are a component unit of city government,” Pitts said. “We supplement their budget with some operating capital each year. We're not looking to build some 2000 seat, TPAC-like facility. It will be remodeled/upgraded into a quaint performing arts center, primarily for live theater, but acoustically suited for concerts, dance recitals, things like that.” The next piece of this puzzle is a substantial private multi-million dollar investment that will result in hotel space, additional parking, and thousands of square feet of restaurant/retail/entertainment space.

“Charles Hand is proposing a $50 million project, partnering with Hilton or Hyatt,” Pitts said. “The proposal includes upgrades to Riverview Inn, a parking structure, and more spaces that will bring people to downtown Clarksville.”

The conversation turns back to MPEC. “The Wilma Rudolph Event Center can only accommodate 500 – 600 for that type of event. MPEC might accommodate 1,500 or more in a similar use situation.” The County Commission has approved the financing, contingent upon contracts with two major tenants,” Pitts said. “It will take a minimum of about 24 months to complete the project.” At this point the conversation took a turn to broader issues, Pitts began talking about traffic, roads, and ways we can begin to address our inevitable area-wide growth. “I had a lot of knowledge coming in to this job,” Pitts said, “but there was much that I've had to learn in my first year. I'm just really pleased with our city/county cooperation, and our workforce. This city has 1,200 dedicated folks who show up every day and do a great job. I do everything I can to support them.” ClarksvilleLivingMag.com

the sweet life! otoriously hard to make, French macarons — those dainty meringue confections filled with ganache,

buttercream or fruit purée — confound even the most experienced bakers. Made primarily from egg whites, almond flour and

sugar, these delicate sandwich cookies are the picture of elegance while being more like a science experiment than an act of artistic expression. The technical parameters for French macarons are specific beyond belief. Each macaron consists of two uniform meringue shells. The top of the shell should be perfectly smooth and shiny. The bottom of the shell should have ruffle-like “feet.” In the ultimate contrast, the fluffy interior within the crispy eggshell-like exterior should be chewy when eaten. It’s a lot.

For these reasons, macarons are a pinnacle to be reached, a veritable Mount Everest of pastries. They are typically filed away with other difficultto-make desserts marked “Do not try at home,” including croquembouche and baked Alaska. Yet Clarksville resident Alie Laumb, owner of Thistle Sweets and a self-taught baker, sells up to 2,400 macarons a week. That she makes from scratch. By herself. After several years of making macarons in her apartment’s kitchen while completing her business degree at

Austin Peay State University, Laumb recently opened a brick-and-mortar store. Thistle Sweets is now housed in a white A-frame cottage in Woodlawn near the Papa Rock Travel Center (at 1880 Woodlawn Road, to be precise). While primarily functioning as a commercial kitchen, the store is open for custom pickup orders and à la carte purchases from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. every Tuesday.

significantly downgrading the glamorous aesthetic the confection demands. While in college, Laumb became something of a legend at the Clarksville Downtown Market, the weekly open-air market. There, the line at Thistle Sweets was a million miles long and the booth regularly sold out hours before the market ended.

Now at the Thistle Sweets store, customers continue to clamor for macarons that come in an eye-popping range of flavors, including churro, apricot, Nutella, banana pudding, peach cobbler, pumpkin pie, cookies and cream, dark chocolate and sea salt, caramel brownie and red velvet (and much, much more). Many flavors are gluten free.

With absolutely zero food service experience, Laumb began her foray into French pastry several years ago for a reason familiar to many college students: She needed money to buy books. With persistent optimism, Laumb made batch after batch of macarons with her Kitchen Aid mixer. She eventually overcame the many pitfalls of macaron-making, including issues with random factors such as the weather. Macarons, it turns out, are sensitive to moisture above all else. “Just an extra gram of water can ruin them,” Laumb explains. “Truthfully, in Tennessee, the biggest issue I have struggled with has definitely been humidity. It is no joke. Humidity can really wreck your world.” Humidity can make macarons shells crack,

macarons are a vibrant pale blue with a royal blue center. With the peanut butter and jelly macarons, one side is purple and the other tan. The various pink, lavender and yellow tones of some flavors are so stunning they could have been colormatched to a Monet painting. The pièce de résistance, in terms of sheer looks, might just be the “circus animal” macaron. Inspired by the iced animal cookies found at the grocery store, the delicate pink macarons are topped by the same multi-colored sprinkles found on the cookies. Additionally, Laumb crushes up the ice animal cookies and mixes them into the filling. They’re a little genius. Some flavors, like hot cocoa and coffee, are filled with a chocolate ganache. Others, like birthday cake and sugar cookie flavors, are filled with an Italian meringue buttercream. “It’s a lot lighter than standard buttercream,” Laumb says of the version she makes with egg whites, butter and granulated sugar. “It really coordinates with the lightness of a French macaron.”

Ever striving, Laumb infuses artistic flair into every flavor. The lemon poppy seed macarons are dotted in black specks. The dark chocolate and sea salt macarons are topped with a zig-zag chocolate drizzle and a dusting of sea salt. Fresh coconut shavings trim the center of the coconutflavored macarons. For holidays and special orders, Laumb raises the bar. This Christmas she has designed macarons as snowmen, gingerbread men and Christmas trees. These will be available at the store on Tuesday, Dec. 10 and Tuesday, Dec. 17. They will also be available at a Thistle Sweets pop-up shop on Saturday, Dec. 14 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Hey Noli, a boutique in the historic downtown. While standard macarons sell for $2 each, the special Christmas versions, which are larger and more detailed, are $3.50 each. For Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, Laumb creates macarons trimmed in charming buttercream flowers.

Thistle Sweet’s macarons are so popular that, in a flashback to the days of the Clarksville Downtown Market, you may not get your preferred flavor if you get to the store after 3 p.m. on the Tuesday pick-up days. Parades

Ghosts of Christmas Past

By Joel Wallace

am always interested in learning more about Clarksville’s past. So, when I found out that this year’s Clarksville Christmas Parade is to be the 60th one, I wanted to learn more about the origins of the modern-day parade and the people who started this tradition. Would be as easy as checking media coverage Christmas 59 years ago? That would be 1960? I can tell you, I tried that route. It didn’t work. I could not find anything about the 1960 Christmas parade in the pages of the Leaf-Chronicle. I could not figure out

18

what I was doing wrong. Was my math wrong? I started counting backwards on my hands. If the parade had been held for 60 consecutive years, inclusive of this year, the first parade would have been 1960. I got nothing in my newspaper searches. Ultimately, I learned this: the first modern-day Clarksville Christmas Parade was held in 1948. The next one would not be held until 1961. Why? I have no idea. The 1961 parade would be organized by a committee of the Clarksville Retail Merchants Association. As early as October of that year, the newspaper was teasing the parade on its front page. In the third paragraph of that story is where I found what I consider to be the most interesting part

Clarksville Living

of the story: the committee would use a “professional float designer and builder” for the first time. The committee was going all in. The designer and builder was a Clarksvillian named Paul Stalls. I had never heard of Paul Stalls and, candidly, I had never heard of a professional float designer and builder. My idea of float building dates to my time in college and involves tissue paper and chicken wire. I would soon learn that Stalls’ involvement in Christmas parades was limited neither to 1961 nor Clarksville alone. I was able to make contact with Stalls’ daughter Paulette Frasca. A resident of Woodlawn, her collection of items related to her father is remarkable. Many of them

appear on these pages. Over the years, Stalls worked on events throughout the southeastern United States. Frasca has fond memories of being with her father while in labored in a building at the old fairgrounds, near the site of where the Dunn Center now stands. Both Stalls’ sketches and his actual output do not disappoint. His ideas were beautiful. The sketches were good enough that the Leaf-Chronicle would run them to illustrate stories about the parade. And the floats ended up looking almost identical to the sketches.

A 1984 Leaf-Chronicle column by Tim Ghianni explored Stalls’ later-in-life work on the Clarksville bicentennial celebration. At the time, his ability to perform physical tasks might have been limited, but his vision and designs remained, “up here… in my head,” as he told the paper. Paul Stalls died not long after the city bicentennial in 1987 at the age of 69. While neither he nor his floats survive, his sketches and photographs of his work do. For that we are fortunate. Joel Wallace is local attorney and former member of the Clarksville City Council. The 60th annual Clarksville Christmas Parade will be held Saturday, December 7, 2019, at 5:00 pm. Winter Wonderland We can all agree that the lights and the sounds are two of the best aspects of every holiday season. The annual Christmas Lights at Clarksville Speedway’s are up and running and will be shining bright from now through New Year’s Day. Start or continue a holiday tradition this year. Come enjoy the lights and synchronized sounds during a one-mile drive through boasting over three million bright lights. Each Friday and Saturday night Santa will be at the speedway kissing babies, shaking hands and taking photos and gift requests. There are several animated scenes throughout the

one-mile drive-thru display. Christmas music plays throughout the light shows scenic drive. One great thing about a drive thru light show is that it broadens the potential audience. Elderly and little ones can enjoy this event without the threat of walking long distances and being out in severe temperatures. This is also a great way for people who are not able to walk for long periods of time to enjoy the beauty of Christmas. You do not have to leave your vehicle to experience the beautiful light display. Make Clarksville Speedway’s Christmas Lights

THE ROMAN PRISON ESCAPE GAME Have you ever wondered what it was like for Paul and Silas who were imprisoned for nearly 2 years for preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ? In a dark and dingy jail cell is where Paul wrote several letters to the churches that are referenced in Revelations.

We offer to you a look into that time period and give you the chance to "escape" from the Roman Prison these apostles were confined to. You have one hour to follow the clues, find Paul’s letters and escape or the New Testament will not be written like it is supposed to be.

We encourage groups of 5-8 people, but participants can be placed with other smaller teams if needed. The game is played on Friday and Saturday nights and Sunday afternoons. There is no charge, however 48 hour advanced reservations are required. Go to www.mounthermonbaptist.org/escapegame or call the church office at 931-362-3323.

Holiday Safety Tips for Your Pet The holidays are an incredible time of the year. Families will be decorating their homes with Christmas trees, holiday decorations and gifts, and friends and family will arrive to celebrate in these festivities. Many of you have pets and/or have family members that will bring their pets to visit as well. The following tips are recommended to help

22

keep your pet safe during this wonderful time of the year. 1. PLACE YOUR TREE IN A CORNER OR SEPARATE ROOM AWAY FROM YOUR PET – REDUCING THE TEMPTATION FOR YOUR PET WANTING TO PLAY. 2. AVOID PLACING LIGHTS, CORDS, DECORATIONS, ORNAMENTS AND TINSEL WITHIN REACH OF YOUR PET. THEY ARE DANGEROUS AND CAN CAUSE INJURY TO YOUR PET. 3. KEEP THE AREA FREE FROM FALLING PINE NEEDLES – INGESTING CAN CAUSE INTESTINAL ISSUES. 4. HOLLY, MISTLETOE, AND POINSETTIA PLANTS ARE TOXIC – KEEP THEM OUT OF REACH. 5. NEVER LEAVE BURNING CANDLES WITHIN REACH OF YOUR PET OR LEFT UNATTENDED. 6. KEEP ALL GIFT WRAPPING, STRINGS, PLASTIC, CLOTH, PAPER AND SCISSORS OUT OF REACH. 7. KEEP FOOD OUT OF REACH – IT IS VERY TEMPTING AND SOME FOODS WILL MAKE YOUR PET SICK. 8. ALWAYS KEEP YOUR PET ON A LEASH WHEN WALKING OR TAKING OUT FOR A POTTY BREAK. YOUR PETS ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH THE AREA WHEN VISITING AND CAN EASILY STRAY AWAY. 9. MEET AND GREETS AND SLOWLY INTRODUCING NEW PETS THAT ARE BROUGHT INTO THE HOME WILL ENSURE

Clarksville Living

THEIR SAFETY. NEVER LEAVE THEM ALONE WITHOUT SUPERVISION – NEVER LEAVE A CHILD UNATTENDED WITH THAT PET. IT MAY NOT BE CHILD OR PET-FRIENDLY AND CAN BE VERY DANGEROUS. 10. HAVE YOUR PET MICROCHIPPED AND PUT A COLLAR WITH CURRENT CONTACT INFORMATION ON IT. 11. CONSIDER CRATING YOUR PET WHEN YOU’RE HAVING A PARTY, GUEST ARRIVE, AND DURING HECTIC MOMENTS TO KEEP THEM SAFE AND REDUCE THE ANXIETY TO BOTH PETS AND FAMILY MEMBERS. 12. NEVER LEAVE YOUR PET AT A BOARDING FACILITY OR PET SITTER THAT YOU DO NOT KNOW OR TRUST. PLEASE GET REFERENCES AND DO YOUR RESEARCH. ENSURE YOUR PET IS UTD ON VACCINES PRIOR TO BOARDING. So many families will consider adopting or buying a new pet for the holiday season. This is a wonderful gift; however, many do not take into consideration how busy it is during this time. It can be stressful to both the pet and the family bringing a new pet into their home. Please ensure you are up to the challenge. When you adopt a new pet, it is a lifelong commitment for you, your family and your new fur baby. They will love you fur ever and their love is unconditional. Your love and commitment should be as well. If you and your family are considering opening your home and heart to a homeless pet, please stop by the Humane Society of Clarksville-Montgomery County, your local shelters or rescues when looking. There are so many beautiful, homeless pets looking for a fur ever loving family. ClarksvilleLivingMag.com

Yucelen creates her dresses similar to the Turkish styles of the 17th through 19th centuries. She used traditional techniques and materials from Turkey and other parts of Asia to add embellishments to the metal dresses.
