The Kindness Objective (TKO) is a new nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting caring and thoughtfulness in the community. The organization began as an anti-bullying group but soon took a little bit of a turn after realizing many anti-bullying organizations focus on how they can prevent bullying after the fact. TKO addresses the root cause of bullying by teaching empathy, compassion, and kindness, to kids and people so that they don’t become bullies in the first place. There is no better way to learn empathy and compassion than putting it into practice through real life experiences. To find out more about The Kindness Objective, to volunteer or donate, visit thekindnessobjective.org, find them on Facebook, or call 615-720-4129.

How Sleep Impacts Heart Health

G

Brought to you by Tennova Medical Group

Getting enough shuteye is about more than beauty sleep. The proper amount of rest is also critical for your cardiac wellness.

Tips to Help You Sleep More Soundly We are constantly surrounded by stimulating distractions, commitments, computers, deadlines and televisions that make sleep seem like an elusive dream. The good news is, you can take control by following a few key practices to sleep more soundly:

1.

We live in a world where working to the highest level of exhaustion is almost considered a badge of honor. We rush and go and do and skimp on sleep in an effort to produce, acquire and thrive. But depriving ourselves of sleep can have a negative and harmful impact on overall health, especially where the heart is concerned.

Develop a bedtime routine. Spend time each evening before bed doing something relaxing that does not involve the bright lights of a screen. Instead of logging on to social media, try taking a bath or reading a book.

Individuals who do not spend enough time sleeping are more likely to develop heart disease, according to the National Sleep Foundation. Specifically, logging fewer than six hours on a nightly basis doubled the risk of heart attack or stroke in a study of 3,000 adults older than 45. The sleep-deprived group was compared with adults of the same age who slept between six and eight hours nightly.

and the lights low to create an environment that supports the best possible rest. Also, invest in a mattress and pillows that are comfy and cozy.

2. Make your bedroom a sleep sanctuary. Keep the temperature cool 3. Set a schedule. Going to bed and waking up at the same time

every day improves your body’s ability to fall asleep easily and rise and shine with lots of energy day after day.

But there’s more to the story. The American Heart Association also notes that sleep deprivation (less than seven to nine hours each night) may be linked closely with other heart-related complications, including diabetes and high blood pressure. When your body is sleep deprived, you may have higher levels of stress hormones, which may increase harmful inflammation in the circulatory system. Plus, when you have not slept enough, you may crave more sugary or high-fat foods to replace the energy that your body needs.

If you have questions about your quality of sleep or your heart health, make an appointment for a checkup with your primary care doctor. Tennova Family Medicine – Tiny Town welcomes new patients of all ages. Call 931-502-2423 or visit TinyTownFamilyMedicine.com to schedule your appointment online.

The Takeaway: While sleep may feel like a luxury, it is actually a necessity to help you live a productive, heart-healthy life. Do whatever you can to make it a priority.

This publication in no way seeks to diagnose or treat illness or to serve as a substitute for professional medical care.

rench traditions and culture hold a special fascination. Certain elements of the culture are world-famous, such as the deep regard the French have for excellent food and conversation. Owner, Haja Bosela and her husband, Eric Moutard opened Madleines Place, a French bistro and bakery, two years ago. They opened the place in hopes of creating an authentic experience for locals to find a little Joie de vivre or joy of life, the feeling they had while preparing and eating meals in their hometowns of central France. Madelines Place offers French-inspired, made-fromscratch soups, salads, pastries and sandwiches. While it`s not easy to replicate homemade cooking and baking inside a café Bosela says they get as close to the old recipes as much as they can. What makes a French bakery unique? Is it the quality of its baguettes, the flakiness of its croissants, the relaxing atmosphere? It’s some combination of all three and so much more. This bakery’s namesake comes from

By Taylor Lieberstein

Moutard`s grandmother Madeleine who was a wonderful baker and chef. Using only wholesome ingredients paired with French techniques they aim to create and celebrate the French cuisine, using recipes that have been passed down for generations. The couple moved to Clarksville two years ago. When they discovered there was no French bistros they decided to try and create an authentic French café for natives, transplants and all Francophiles. Madelines Place is their way of throwing it back to weekend and holiday meals in France- the cooking never ends. On weekends and holidays in France as soon as the breakfast meal is finished, the family starts prepping for lunch. The lunch meal runs late into the afternoon and then they move immediately into dinner time. Bosela said between her previous restaurant experience, having raised five kids and now owning two restaurants cooking is something she has spent much of her life doing and she wouldn’t have it any other way. dozen years ago Chris Haycraft owned a painting business in Nashville, Painting Perfection, an interior/exterior full service operation which he enjoyed, but when the 2008 recession hit, Chris was given an opportunity that has become Outlaw Antiques.

“I was in it just enough that I liked it better than painting,” Haycraft said. “I kept painting, and did antiques on the side. Once a month I would drive to New York, fill my trailer with antiques, and fill a 30-yard dumpster full of scrap metal. It took me five years to empty that property.”

“I was offered the painting contract on all the repossessed homes from Community First Bank & Trust,” Haycraft said. “A CFB&T Sr. VP said, 'go in, clean out whatever is there and paint each property'. I started getting all this free stuff, so I started selling at a flea market, it was a hobby.” His hobby escalated quickly. Another of his clients had a father in the antiques business in New York. Haycraft ended up buying an 8,000 sf milking parlor full of antiques, and set off on a multi-year adventure. 12

Clarksville Living

By Tony Centonze Haycraft started selling in Tennessee, Texas and Massachusetts, at major shows which he still attends each year. “The bigger shows, with drive time, can take me 13 days” Haycraft said. “I'm pickin' and selling the entire time. I grew up going

to auctions with my mom. I always had a passion for it. Once I got into the business I realized that I loved it. I drained my savings, and was all in. It was sink or swim. Either I was going to make a success of it or have a great story.” He laughed at that thought, and admitted he was slow to call himself an antiques dealer. “I'm not sure how long you have to do something to be a professional, but I'm going on twelve years now,” Haycraft said. “I learned a lot the hard way, about what things are worth. The internet is a great resource now, but I've definitely made a lot of mistakes.” Around his shop, a variety of styles and eras are represented. Stand-outs are old signs, carnival games, a WWII Army field telephone, and an early 1900's Catholic confessional booth.

Clarksville

“I love Industrial,” Haycraft said. “I'm drawn to anything you look at and ask, what is that - what was it used for, anything with character, suits, fun house mirrors, you name it. There's no rhyme or reason to it. Everything has a season. Someone might turn this antique washing machine into a planter. You never know.”

Haycraft is originally from southern Illinois, his wife Maria is from Niagara Falls, NY. “We actually met at a flea market,” Haycraft said. “She came into my booth about seven years ago, best flea market find ever! I travel at least two weeks a month for shows, or just pickin'. American Pickers really popularized that term. “For our business, the show is good and bad. It gets people interested. But, people see what's happening and tend to develop unrealistic expectations about their items' worth. That show has avenues that most of us don't. It has driven costs up.” Haycraft says his favorite spots are still rich with opportunities. He also shared some of his personal wins and losses.

but there's always money to be made. I paid $2,000 for a 24' hand hewn 1850's hardware sign. It was beautiful, and sold for $9,000. That was a good margin. But, most of the time, you take 1,000 items to a show and make your money a little bit at a time. It's a lot of work. Most people don't realize that. It's not a get-rich-quick scheme. This business takes time.” Haycraft says he mostly buys and sells as is. “I recognize the Empire, Eastlake, Art Deco pieces to an extent, but, I still have to do my research. Signs are popular, but you have to pay up to get them. Once in a while you'll find a hidden sign in a buyout, but, everybody's aware of the value of signs, so they're getting harder to come across.

could be gotten for next to nothing, now it's a hot trend. “It's hard to predict the trends,” Haycraft said. “People want what their grandmother had, or something expensive that's affordable now. I sell a lot to Nashville decorators and designers. I buy thousands of items each year, half of which are sold to dealers. I have people from England that buy from me regularly, and I wholesale stuff to auction houses as well.” Haycraft says about 60% of his items will sell in Nashville.

“During the recession, people were looking for cheap things they could use, now in this stronger economy people are redoing their homes, so the collectors are back in the market.”

“I have to keep it fresh, new things every month,” Haycraft said. “It's a hustle keeping the rotating door going. When you're buying, you have to consider all the factors. I have an expense sheet where I track all my expenses. I know what my break-even point is on each show. I can't pick up something for $10 and sell it for $11. There has to be a profit margin or I have to go back to painting.”

We help each other, we share leads and contacts. We don't all sell the same stuff, we have different styles and tastes. My first big purchase was overwhelming, but I would love to stumble across something like that now that I know what I'm doing. I went for it

National Pet Dental Month

ebruary is “National Pet Dental Health Month”. Too often, pet owners overlook the importance of good dental hygiene. Most pet owners are not aware, nor do they recognize, the early signs and symptoms of gum and dental disease. Dental health plays a vital role in the overall health of your pet. Understanding periodontal disease and preventative measures that can be taken is extremely important. Daily brushing, healthy diet, and annual checkups with your veterinarian will reduce and even prevent many health issues attributed to poor dental hygiene.

Periodontal disease is the most common dental condition in both dogs and cats. Early detection is crucial. Plaque and tartar formation on your pet’s teeth begins to build as young as three years of age. Most often, plaque and tartar first forms above the gum line. Once the plaque and tartar forms below the gum line, if left untreated, periodontal disease develops. This can lead to severe 22

damage to the underlying tissue, infection and abscesses can occur in the area, tooth decay and tooth loss and can also damage the connective tissue that connects the teeth to the jawbone. Periodontal disease is graded on a scale of 0 (normal) to 4 (severe). If left untreated, it is very painful and can lead to other health issues such as kidney, liver, and heart disease. Depending on the severity of the disease, your veterinarian will make recommendations as to a treatment plan for your pet.

several times a week can be just as effective. Patience and training will reduce your pet’s anxiety and eventually they become tolerant. Your pet’s diet plays an important role as well. Please consult with your veterinarian to determine what food, treats, and dental products best suit your pet’s dental and overall health.

Annual checkups with your veterinarian are crucial to early detection. The following are signs that your pet is having dental issues and should be addressed immediately by your veterinarian:

Join these successful business owners with your own rental suite!

• Bad breath • Broken or loose teeth • Tooth discoloration • Plaque • Tartar • Difficulty chewing • Drooling • Reduced appetite • Weight loss • Pain, swelling or bleeding in or around the mouth area. EXHIBITIONS Celebrating the 25th Anniversary of the Lucy Dunwody Boehm Porcelain Collection Feb 23–May 3 | Crouch Gallery | Sponsored by Fred & Judy Landiss Edward Marshall Boehm, with no formal art training, started his porcelain studio in Trenton, New Jersey in 1950. The works he created have been collected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Great Britain’s royal family, and President and Mrs. Richard M. Nixon, among others. Many of his bird figures were designed after the live animals at the Boehm aviary and gardens on the Delaware River. The Customs House Museum & Cultural Center has one of the largest collections in the Southeast. We’ll celebrate the 25 year anniversary of the collection by displaying it in its entirety with an exhibition in the Crouch Gallery sponsored by Judy and Fred Landiss, founders of the Customs House Museum’s Lucy Dunwody Boehm Porcelain Collection. Apron Strings: Ties to the Past Jan 25–March 16 | Jostens Gallery Apron Strings: Ties to the Past reviews the apron’s role as an emotionally charged vehicle for expression with a rich and varied craft history that is still relevant today. Featuring aprons dating from the 1900s through the present, the exhibition chronicles changing attitudes toward women and domestic work. It also surveys the wide range of design and craft techniques apronmakers have used to express themselves, while still working within creative venues traditionally available to women. This is a program of ExhibitsUSA and the National Endowment for the Arts. Reimagined Lore: The Art of Tara Swalgren Jan 14–May 5 | Orgain Gallery This animal-themed mixed media exhibition showcases the work of local artist & APSU graduate Tara Swalgren. She is currently an art instructor at Madsion Street Art & Music Academy in Clarksville. Swalgren explains, “I want to create these intricate and beautiful creatures that we only see and hear about in folk lore or our fantasies. I want to bring them into our reality, our view. To allow us to gaze upon something so fantastical that it can only be made through art.”

I Have a Voice: Traveling Exhibition from Tennessee State Museum Now–Mar 29 | Memory Lane The exhibition, on loan from the Tennessee State Museum, gives a snapshot of Tennessee’s rich African American musical heritage and its influence on worldwide music. The exhibit gives visitors a chance to hear the voices of the many Tennessee African American men and women who made their mark on American music from ragtime to Motown. Serepta Jordan: From the Collection Now–Mar 1 | Lower Level Foyer Serepta Mildred Jordan was born January 27, 1839 in New Providence, Tennessee. Jordan started a journal around 1857, when she was 18. She continued writing in her journal until 1864, close to the end of the Civil War. The journal, recently restored, is featured in the exhibition along with photos and a collection of Jordan’s personal belongings. Explorations in Color: Tennessee Women of Glass Jan 8–Mar 1 | Kimbrough Gallery This exhibition features more than 30 works created by seven women artists working in glass. Artists Betty Turner, Sam Simms, Tammy O’Connor, Mary Beth McClure, Yvette Campagna, Alice Shepard, and Meredith Edmondson will have their glasswork on display.
