ALICE IN WATERLAND
Is there any children’s book with more vibrant visual descriptions than Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland? From the playing-card world of the Queen of Hearts to the psychedelic Mad Tea Party, it’s no wonder that so many illustrators have been inspired by it over the years. But we’ve never seen anything quite like Elena Kalis’ Alice in Waterland and Looking Glass, a series of photos that re-enact Alice’s adventures underwater, featuring flamingos, teacups, and even the White Rabbit’s famous pocket watch. The images bring an entirely new brand of surreal beauty to Lewis Carroll’s tale.
Kalis got her start with underwater photography seven years ago, and she's amassed an impressive portfolio of surreal portraiture since then. While there are many models featured in her portfolio, her primary muse is her teenage daughter, Sacha, who possesses such a natural comfort and affinity for the water that it wouldn't be too surprising if someone mistook her for a mermaid. She has shared the water with all kinds of wondrous marine animals over the years, including dolphins, stingrays, turtles and sharks.

Sacha Kalis, AKA Bahamas Girl, Alice in Waterland, and mermaid lives much of the time with her friends beneath the waves. Star(half)fish of underwater photography projects for art, education, advertising, fashion and movies. She was born and raised on a small island in the Bahamas where she learned to swim before she could walk. Her mother, an underwater art photographer, encouraged Sacha's natural affinity for the world below the waves where she loves to swim with the dolphins, stingrays, manatees, turtles, and sharks in an environment where light, movement, and weightlessness create an amazing, dreamlike quality to images.

NOT JUST A FAIRYTALE
Underwater photographer Henrik Sorensen put together something worthwhile. What he came up with is a “twisted take” on Denmark as a fairytale country that he’s calling “Not Just a Fairytale.” In reality, the shoot began at Ledreborg palace, weeks before diving into the pool — that’s where Sorensen photographed his 18th century fairytale background. And in an atypical move for todays Photoshop-driven age, he actually printed out and brought the backdrop with him to the underwater shoot. A lot of talent went into captur-
ing this shot, from the photographer, to the top-notch underwater model, to the costume designers. And together, they created yet another stunning example of a shoot that mixes two separate photographic genres.

whale shark — currently considered at risk of going extinct in the wild — to the public’s attention. Heinrichs, an underwater photographer, and Schmidt, a fashion photographer, first teamed up in November 2012 in order to combine their skill sets for this photo shoot idea.
