Coming Home

Low-Level Urban Novels RL: 1.0 to 2.0 | Grades: YA | Lexile: 290 to 380 Themes: Overcoming adversity, determination Will has left his troubled teen years behind. He’s seen the world. Worked odd jobs. Matured. Now he’s coming home. No one could be more thrilled than his mother, Nia. But old family secrets keep them apart. And one shattering event may destroy everyone’s shot at happiness. Incorporating appealing graphic elements on every spread, this three-book series will appeal to all readers, but especially visual learners. Each book is approximately two thousand words. And the mature story arc will appeal to emergent teen readers tired of juvenile fiction.

Coming Home (Coming Home Book 1)

Searching for Answers (Coming Home Book 2)

The Truth (Coming Home Book 3)

Will has matured. Traveled. Worked odd jobs. Can he stay out of trouble now that he’s back home? Or will pride keep him from making the best choices?

Will is obsessed with Mike’s murder, which terrifies Karyn. She’s afraid he’ll get hurt. But it’s not Will who ends up in the hospital.

A chance encounter brings Will closer to the truth. But he leaves justice to the police. With the lies exposed, Will emerges stronger, bolder, and more confident.

Low-Level Urban Ghost Stories RL: 2.0 | Grades: YA | Lexile: 240 to 260 Themes: Supernatural, loss, adversity Bree was in big trouble. She was barely getting by. Her older brother drank too much. Her boss was a crook. And her aunt was slowly losing it. Then there was the empty apartment next door. Incorporating appealing graphic elements on every spread, this three-book series will appeal to all readers, but especially visual learners. Each book is approximately two thousand five hundred words. And the mature story arc will appeal to emergent teen readers tired of juvenile fiction.

“Who are you?” Bree asked the woman. “Tell me your name.” The woman looked at the living room window. It was open. She ran toward it … and jumped.

Bree knew her boss was dealing drugs. But she needed the job. Her brother only came home to steal. And her aunt was ill. “Just one last job,” Bree thought.

Bree turned the knob of apartment 4A. The door was unlocked. They walked in. It was empty. Andre looked around. “This is where we used to live.”

State Young Adult Book Review Committee, “recommended as a good selection for upper middle and high school libraries”

The first six titles in the Dark Man series are 36-page books designed for young adult struggling readers and nonreaders who probably have never successfully managed to read a book. The second six titles are 48-page books with a slight degree of progression over the first six and offering a more challenging read. The final set of 48-page titles (Yellow Series) continue the Dark Man’s quest to destroy the evil Shadow Masters.

“beguiling” and for “video game-minded reluctant readers”

The story text is short and simple but not patronizing. Stories are gritty, full of tension and mystery. The language is terse. The Dark Man is a serious comic hero with his own mythology. Each book is a self-contained story, but each story is a part of a greater whole. The twelve books can be read in any order. The Orange Series range from 220 to 420 words (RL 1.0 to 2.0). The Green and Yellow Series are 1000 words each (RL 2.0 to 3.0).

As a high school student, I love this time in my life and plan to live it up while doing what I used to believe was impossible, writing and publishing books. One day I’d love to get my PhD in psychology—and in a parallel universe, I’d love to be an actor. My favorite food is ice cream; I could honestly live off of it 24/7. My friends mean the world to me, and I’d be absolutely nowhere without my large, crazy family. I can’t wait to see what life has to offer, and I plan on enjoying every minute of it!

Urban Teen Fiction Flip Book by Stephanie Perry Moore

“An engaging pair of tales that communicate a thoughtful message with a light touch.”

RL: 3.5 | Grades: YA | Lexile: 610 to 650

Booklist Review

Urban teen fiction flip book—showing the point of view from two sides—the cheer squad and the football team. Want a different point of view? Just flip the book! ... Because every story has two sides.

“Readers will be hooked, whichever narrator they start with, and they’ll quickly flip over to discover the other story’s secrets of love, anger, sorrow, guilt, and grief.”

The girls stories are Cheer Drama—Always Upbeat, Keep Jumping, Yell Out, Settle Down, and Shake It. The boys stories are Baller Swag—All That, No Hating, Do You, Be Real and Got Pride. Together they tell the story of high school couples through the eyes of the cheerleading squad and the varsity football team. The first letter in each book, C-H-E-E-R, and B-A-L-L-E-R, represent the names of the featured high school couple.

Grovehill Giants™ Teen Fiction Flip Book by Stephanie Perry Moore

RL: 3.5 | Grades: YA | Lexile 660 to 680

The Lockwood Lions’ crosstown rivals, the Grovehill Giants, seem to have it all. Or do they? When the cheer squad and the ballers get together, it always gets intense. But there are two sides to every story—whose side are you on? Each novel in the flip is approximately 30,000 words–170 pages. The ladies of Savvy Girl—Skylar, Ariel, Vanessa, Victoria, and Yaris—have their ups and downs. But they won’t let their drama interfere with the state title. The ballers of Fresh Guy—Ford, Ryder, Emerson, Stone, and Hagen—are tough athletes and grand showboaters. But can they take it to the Dome?

As soon as they were seated, the principal, Mrs. Montgomery, began to address their class. She gave them directions for the day and dismissed them to their homerooms, where they would receive class schedules. The three friends each had a different homeroom. They looked at the numbers on the doors to get a clue as to where to go. Once they had a direction in mind, they wished each other luck and separated down the busy hallway of ninth graders frantically searching for their own homerooms.

Drama is always just a day away …

randi was still looking for her homeroom when she heard someone calling her name. She turned around and was greeted by the captain of the cheerleading squad, Alexandria Solis. “Hey, lady! You look lost,” Alex said. Alex’s dark black hair made her look exotic. She had a look that other girls envied, and she knew how to flaunt it. “Yeah, well, this school is huge and confusing. What are you doing over here in the ninth-grade wing?” Brandi asked.

Next year. That felt like next century. Meanwhile, in twelve hours, he’d be on the way to the Dee Cee. He signed the credit card slip. We went back to the waiting limo. It was in his arms in that limo that I made the decision. His parents were away for three weeks on Martha’s Vineyard. His older sister lived in New York; his big brother worked for a movie company in Los Angeles. The penthouse would be empty. We’d be alone. I wanted Jayson to know I really loved him. He wanted the same for me. I called Kalina to tell her I wasn’t coming home. She didn’t argue. Let me repeat: it was da bomb. I’m not sorry we did it. It kind of sealed us with him going away and me staying in Chicago. I stayed overnight. We slept in each other’s arms. I was with him in the morning when the cab arrived to take him to O’Hare and drop me at my place. We kissed again and again on my doorstep. I was strong and did not cry. Not even at the last, “I love you.” Not until the cab rolled away. Then, I wept.

Chapter Two Two weeks later, I was still cleaning rooms. Jayson was in

Dee Cee, just about to start classes at the college everyone just called “da House.” I had so many reasons to be low. My job. My school. And my man being seven hundred miles away. First, work. Here’s some free advice from someone who’s cleaned thousands of rooms: Never lay down on a hotel bedspread. They barely ever get washed. Don’t walk barefoot on a hotel room carpet. The amount of stuff that won’t come out of the fibers with a vacuum is wack. Most important, wipe down the TV remote with alcohol before touching it. That woman in the lobby who had a herpes cold sore the size of Ghana could have just been watching Crystal’s talk show in your room. I’m just saying.

onique Reed was the prettiest girl Greg Nash had ever seen. When he came to work at the Side Scene clothing store, he couldn’t take his eyes off her. He was glad his pal Lew Denison had encouraged him to apply for the job. What a great gig! The Side Scene hired only attractive young salespeople. But Monique was off the charts! “Hey, Lew,” Greg teased, “how come you didn’t tell me Miss Universe was working here? Believe me, I would’ve applied sooner!” Greg wondered why Lew didn’t smile. Usually, Lew had a pretty good sense of humor. “You’re talking about Monique? I’d stay away from her, man,” Lew said.

Differentiated Classics Adapted Classics at Two Low Levels RL: 1.0 to 2.0 | Grades: 5 to 8, 9 to 12, YA We’ve taken our Timeless Classics and Shakespeare and made them even more accessible. Words and phrases that may have stumped emergent readers have been eliminated. We recognize that students in the same classroom may not have equivalent reading skills, which is why the two levels appear virtually identical—

on the outside. Inside it’s a whole different look, with a larger font and extra white space, making these stories visually appealing with the aim to improve reading comprehension, fluency, and confidence. Classic fiction is 80 pages and classic Shakespeare is 110 pages.

The Day Gets Colder

The Day Gets Colder After Scrooge’s nephew left, two other men came in. They now stood, with their hats off, in Scrooge’s office. They had books and papers in their hands, and bowed to him. “Scrooge and Marley’s, I believe,” said one of the gentlemen, looking at his list. “Tell me, sir—am I addressing Mr. Scrooge or Mr. Marley?” “Mr. Marley has been dead these seven years,” Scrooge said. “He died seven years ago this very night.” “Ah, well, Mr. Scrooge, then,” said the gentleman, taking up a pen. “It is good to help the poor. They suffer greatly in this festive season. Many cannot meet their needs. Hundreds of thousands do not have common comforts, sir.” “Are there no prisons?” asked Scrooge.

Scrooge took a long look at his clerk. He was another strange fellow. He had a large family and hardly any money. Yet he was always cheerful. The clerk greeted two men who came in after Fred left. He showed them to Scrooge’s office. “Good afternoon!” one of the men said.

Aligned to the Specific CCSS Strands RL: 3.0 to 8.0 | Grades: 3 to 12

The Common Core State Standards (CCSS) provide a consistent, clear understanding of what students are expected to learn. Aligning each lesson in these six Common Core titles to the CCSS ensures that students are being taught and assessed on what they are expected to learn and know. The alignment helps educators think critically about their curriculum, instruction, and assessments as they work to ensure that their students meet the rigorous new standards.

Word Bank

Beginning with foundational skills, the activities teach students what they need to learn. The alignments offer a progressive development of reading comprehension skills so that students advancing through the levels are able to gain more from whatever they read. Each title includes a table of contents, a CCSS alignment chart, 130 reproducible lessons individually aligned to the CCSS (each lesson contains a discrete alignment at the bottom of the page), a scope and sequence chart, and an answer key.

Reading Comprehension Nonfiction 1 & 2 100 Reproducible Activities in Each Book RL: 3.0 to 4.0 | Grades: 5 to 12, ELL Students suffer from a knowledge deficit. Students only exposed to fiction will lack the necessary background and vocabulary to understand history and science texts. But reading nonfiction can be difficult. Nonfiction does not follow the predictable structure of fiction stories and often contains tricky vocabulary and new concepts. Most reading after high school is nonfiction reading. These functional words are learned in context with manageable one-page activities.

The 21st Century Coach

®

21st Century Skills in 21-Minute Lessons RL: 3.0 to 4.0 | Grades: 6 to 12

The 21st Century Coach® attempts to bridge the gap between coursework and real work by focusing on real-world skills and applications. In order to thrive in the 21st century digital economy, students will need certain proficiencies within the context of rigorous academic standards. Each resource book focuses on one of the three categories listed in the Partnership for 21st Century Skills: Learning and Innovation Skills; Information, Media, and Technology Skills; Life and Career Skills. The reproducible activities and lessons in this three-book series will prepare students for success in the 21st century by giving them the skills and knowledge they will need as citizens, workers, and leaders after high school.

Features •

Three 104-page Teacher Resource Books each containing 36 lessons, which allows for pacing based on 36 weeks of instruction.

To extend class time, teachers may choose from three additional activities, each of which also can be completed within 21 minutes.

Teach to your student demographics: Choose from three pacing “tracks.” Each track leads with one book based on the students’ needs, and integrates lessons from the other two books, maintaining a once-per-week instruction plan with options for more if needed.

Sixteen skill-specific graphic organizers are at the end of each resource book.

Teach in 21-minute increments: Each lesson is composed of teaching sections that can be done in “21 minutes or less.” Following an Introduce/Teach/Reflect approach, teachers may instruct the lesson concept in a minimum, 21-minute period.

Each lesson is two pages—one page of teacher instruction followed by one reproducible Student Activity Sheet.

Handbooks Combining practical content with visual appeal, the 21 st Century Lifeskills handbooks read more like a magazine than a book. Highly readable with full-color photographs, a smaller trim size (6” x 9”), and an eye-popping layout, these 120-page student handbooks (SH) are great for teaching life skills to a twenty-first century population without the appearance of a textbook. The 10 handbooks in this series will provide readers a thorough and non-threatening introduction to the multi-dimensional competencies, concepts, and vocabulary they need to achieve independence. Used alone or in conjunction with the activity-based 21st Century Lifeskills worktexts, these handbooks offer students a unique and visual way to achieve realworld literacy.

School Library Journal Review “This aptly named series is a goldmine of useful, practical information that older teens and young adults need to live productive and organized lives.”

Katie Couric: Your husband’s experience has been repeatedly questioned . Some voters worry that with three years in the Senate he needs a little more experience under his belt before he’s ready . What do you tell people who are worried about that? Michelle Obama: I tell people that in our politics we measure by this very narrow definition . And a lot of times it’s years in Washington, or whether you’ve made a lot of money running a very large corporation . . . But what I say is that the measure of leadership is the choices that people made over a lifetime . . . Katie Couric: Like what? Michelle Obama: Community organizing . Now, when was the last time we’ve had a president of the United States who spent years working . . . with people who never had a voice and advocating for better streets, cleaner streets, safer communities?
