8 HOUSING. Marvila

This exercise comes from the creation of a pedestrian way, which got its start in the Rua Direita of Marvila, crosses a currently abandoned land, pass under the viaduct of railway line and crosses on north through an intermediate altitude of Vale de Chelas . This route is marked on the south by the existence of three ruins. The houses are built from the ruins and according to their volumetric pre-existing. Thus, there are nine houses spread over three buildings, where the roofs of buildings differ from each other. Since the beginning the intention was to make the roof accessible in the three buildings. These roofs are places of refuge and are sheltered from the outside, the floor and walls are covered with wood. The typologies are simple, and on the ground floor are the public areas of the house such as living room+kitchen and on the second floor are the sleeping spaces with work space and bathroom. In the first building there are two houses on a single floor. The exterior walls of the houses are prefabricated concrete, these are structural walls and it’s interior is lined with white plasterboard plates, to distinguish the outer space of the interior space. The floor and the ceiling have the same expression, are both coated wood. The idea of creating housing as a place of refuge from the outside gains strength.

INDUSTRY MUSEUM OF WEST LISBON

The project of the Industry Museum of West Lisbon is located in Rua do Açúcar, at one extreme zone of the strategy group, distanced from the center of Marvila, as was proposed in the intervention group, not to create a single center but several, where you feel always at the center of Marvila. The area where the project is developed corresponds to the old Match Factory of Marvila, currently is disabled and the only thing remained are the furnace and the chimney, which are inserted into the program of the museum. The museum has a strong urban presence, marked by the building which gives access to the complex and is the only one which is related to Rua do Açúcar and has a large opening ripping this building in the floor facing the street. The access to the upper level, where are the exhibition areas, auditorium and administration, is done by a stair that is almost a ramp for his shallow climb. The program of the museum was distributed in order to respect the deployment of the old buildings that served the factory, whose distribution was made by a system of internal streets, seemed a small city within Marvila. So the program functions are distributed by buildings, independent of each other. The volume of Rua do Açúcar makes access to the complex and here are the cloakroom, reception, bathrooms and a small store, at the upper level is the documentation center. The central volume is the highest, and is where is installed the auditorium, space for children and cafeteria. The volume devoted to the permanent exhibitions is the volume where is the chimney and in front there is a large patio that may receive open-air exhibition. In the volume of Rua Capitão Leitão are the areas of deposits, administrative areas and temporary exhibitions. 20
