My heart leaps up when I behold A rainbow in the sky: So was it when my life began; So is it now I am a man; So be it when I shall grow old, Or let me die! The Child is father of the Man; And I could wish my days to be Bound each to each by natural piety. By William Wordsworth
INTRODUCTION I am Claudia Mauderer, a third year student studying at Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, majoring in Photography. As my final year comes to a close and I reflect back to the challenging curves that the COVID-19 pandemic threw me this year, I am immensely grateful to still be in the graduating class of 2020. This photography portfolio holds my passion, dedication and starting block that I now use to climb higher but still look down and tap myself on the shoulder for what I have achieved. I say with a warm heart that is filled with immense gratitude, thank you to the Stellenbosch Academy of Design

and Photography institute for being so quick and effective on unforeseen circumstances that this year portrayed, going through an extended quarantine of tight laws and regulations. I am a proud student and soon to be alumni of Stellenbosch Academy.

About Me CLAUDIA MAUDERER I’m a half German, half South African with a BA in Visual Communications, living in the beautiful city of Cape Town, who loves to spend a lot of time on the road. While studying at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography, I developed a deep passion for capturing raw and intimate moments of love, adventure & connection between the people in front of the lens. The love I have for food grew into a deeper passion. Finding my first 35mm analogue camera, a Minolta SRT 101, that was tucked away in the deep ends of my fathers cupboard back in 2018, paved the way I felt and connected me with photography. A nostalgic yearning for the delicateness of film lured me in and captivated me. I have spent hours on end flipping through my parents photo albums, dreaming of an era I could only see through the collection of grain filled photographs. During my final year of studying I interned at one of South Africa’s leading food stylist’s studio, while I was in the process of creating my cookbook titled Far Yet Near. It was a vision that came to life and crossed that little box of certainty, that this is what I want to do. I never lost that passion for working with people and it seems to be a never ending love-story for me.

GEN Z YELLOW YOUTH PORTRAITURE
‘Live fast, die young’ was once the mantra for generations of angsty teen rebellion, but as Generation Z enter the era of cautious hedonism, is it being laid to rest? Gen Z is the youth that was born between the years 1995 to 2010, growing up in a time as technology had laughed and advanced at a rapid rate. Gen Z being dependent on technology has learnt to use its power for the better. Being comfortable with the internet and social media attention has caused an uproar in mental health by being exposed to all means of information and communication across the world. Caught between the duality of traditional and nonconformist values and behaviours, pivotals have harnessed a lever that will move the world forward.

A QUARANTINE DELIGHT SOUTH AFRICAN WINTER SIMPLICITY
Being a student in my final year of completing my studies during a pandemic was certainly unpredictable. Fortunately, with technology I have the capability to continue with my education from home, this challenges students to become more time attentive. Taking breaks from the computer screen is vitally important, my new profound hobby is found in the kitchen. I enjoy creating and trying new recipes with pantry essentials and low-cost food items. Through this project, I captured essential food that I had made, the food is suited for the cold weather as winter has come for the year.

ENGELHANDE “ANGEL HANDS”
Currently, we as South Africans are part of the world pandemic crises that is COVID-19 and are one of few countries that are experiencing the strictest lockdown restrictions. Many people during these long 3 months have lost their jobs and are unable to find new jobs. South Africa’s economy has taken a knock that will take many years to recover and has effected the livelihoods of all citizens, drastically affecting the citizens in informal settlements. The pandemic has so far has brought many troubles but few have tried to make a change in the livelihoods of those struggling most. Sprouting Minds is a non-profit organisation that is run by three individuals from a local church, their aim is to educate members in the Fisantekraal area on the importance of food nourishment and how they can feed the hungry, specifically children who are not receiving food, in their community with a subsistence vegetable garden.

MUSEA AND COCO & SALT LOCALLY SOURCED GARMENTS
Being in the position of entering the career world next year I wanted to delve into the industry feel for fashion. Collaborating with two local South African fashion boutiques, Coco&Salt and Musea, I was able to bring a vision to life. Colour and creativity were key as colour has the power to evoke every type of feeling. From femininity and masculinity to emotions and cravings. A Canadian study found 90 percent of consumers’ first impressions are based on colour alone.

DARLING BREW JUST LARGER AND NAVIGATOR
Darling Brew, a craft brewery based in the town of Darling in the Western Cape, has been officially declared as Africa’s first carbonneutral brewery! The Brewery is expected to offset a total of 687.96 tons of CO2 over the next year. This will be equivalent to having eliminated the same amount of carbon from the environment as 17 829 tree seedlings having grown for 10 years. To become Africa’s first carbon-neutral brewery, Darling Brew has calculated their carbon footprint by means of a greenhouse gas audit. The carbon footprint is offset through impact choice, a provider of end-to-end environmental sustainability solutions, who also ensure the emissions are offset via responsible carbon capturing and reduction projects.

Far Yet Near A Collection of Family Recipes
Dining with one’s beloved family and friends is certainly one of life’s fundamental and most cherished delights that is both soulsatisfying and everlasting. This book is a collection of family recipes from twelve quarantined homes in South Africa that experienced the hardships of separation from family and friends during the year of the COVID-19 pandemic. During the quarantined lockdown I found myself spending more and more time in the kitchen as baking became a form of therapy, a space for exploration, soul-searching and self-discovery. It is now a remedy to silence a busy day through the simplicity of wishing ingredients together. Beyond the preparation, the experience of making food would not be complete without friends and family to indulging into my food, encouraging conversations around the table and ultimately, creating a space for us to come together again.
