CLAUDIA TSANG
Interior Design Portfolio
HelloGrowing up in San Francisco, I was always intrigued by how the city’s hills influenced its architecture. As I got older, I developed a deep love for Victorian-style homes. However, those Period Revival box-like houses continue to baffle me with their lack of character and puzzling design choices. I thought, ‘If I can’t change the exterior, I can create warm and inviting interiors.’
My journey began with high school and initial college studies in architecture.
But during that time, I opted for a more ‘sustainable’ path, temporarily setting aside my passion for hospitality management.
Over the past decade, I’ve thrived in the hospitality industry, including 5 years as a flight attendant, which allowed me to explore diverse cultures and draw inspiration from around the world. Now in Seattle, I’ve decided to reignite my passion by pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in interior design at Bellevue College.
My goal is to make design accessible and enjoyable for everyone, be it in retail or residential spaces.

Food Hall
The ‘Food Hall,’ located in Capitol Hill, addresses the area’s homelessness issue with a focus on dignity. Unlike traditional food banks, it offers a regular shopping experience. Inside, visitors access free groceries, hot meals, and hygiene items. The layout mimics a grocery store, providing autonomy to visitors. Communal dining areas and peaceful lounges foster connections and reflection.

Hygiene facilities, including showers, are available to address critical needs. Beyond immediate help, the center aims to be a refuge for rejuvenation, offering job placement, medical and mental health services, and a friendly chat. The Food Hall aspires to help individuals recharge and set out on a path to positive change.

Design Qualifier: Intertwined
I have chosen “Intertwining” to define the project because it symbolizes the unity in strong communities, where people from different backgrounds come together like vines, sharing resources and building trust. This concept is reflected in the seamless integration of the retail and dining areas, creating a harmonious space. Quiet spots, such as employee rooms and utility spaces, are discreetly located away from high-traffic areas. A notable feature is the workshop room, designed as an open and welcoming resource center. The layout ensures efficient traffic flow while meeting ADA regulations and fire safety egress requirements based on occupancy load.
Visual Positioning
The Food Hall is an inviting space that nurtures connections and community. Just as vibrant glass colors blend seamlessly to create a new hue, our space encourages the harmonious sharing of food and resources among diners.

The retail space seamlessly integrates with the communal dining area through curved retail shelves that encourage a smooth flow for shoppers. Light fabric ceiling elements enhance natural light and add warm colors during the cold months while also acting as sound reducers. A custom sloped reception desk improves accessibility and provides a warm welcome to visitors. The workshop room, with its inviting, organically shaped space and circular skylight, supports reintegration into society.
Colored glass partitions at the elevated lounge area offer privacy while maintaining a connection to the larger space. Additional bench seating encourages interactions with fellow visitors. As part of the community, the outdoor area is versatile, accommodating local markets and events while providing a pleasant spot for diners to enjoy fresh air.
The interior exudes a welcoming and cozy ambiance, with fresh produce thoughtfully arranged for easy access. This setup allows individuals to grab what they need without any pressure to engage with others if they prefer not to.v

Flagship Store
In the project, paper models were used to shape the design concept, drawing inspiration from the assigned sports brand. After the design concept was finalized, the interior space was designed to complement the chosen brand. During the creative phase, SketchUp was employed, and for rendering, hand sketching techniques were utilized. Once the interior design was complete, Revit was used to develop the construction documents, covering everything from floor plans and sections to detailed partition specifications and door types.

Concept Development with Paper Model
My design concept centers around the themes of togetherness and community, drawing inspiration from Burton's motto, 'We ride together.' In my conceptual models, I've employed curved and half-circle elements to symbolize hugs and unity. Additionally, varying heights have been utilized to mimic the natural terrain of a mountain.
Selected Contract Documents
Curves have been strategically integrated into the space to create a sense of fluidity, aligning with the Burton slogan. The circular elevator complements the curved floor plan, adding visual interest to the area.
Wooden slats of varying heights are used for display shelves, emulating mountain terrain. The ceiling light installation takes its design cues from Mount Rainier, incorporating a local essence into the flagship store.
Perspective from Level 1
The flagship store features two main elements: a lounge and retail space, with the latter spanning both the first and second floors to enhance foot traffic. The lounge offers a captivating view of the atrium and first-floor snowboard displays. The wooden slat ceiling casts interesting shadows and mimics the depth of mountain landscapes. Materials and colors blend with the mountain environment. Warm colored stools and a bar contrast with a cool marble top, and an abstract rug reflects the mountain’s rugged shapes.
