CURRICULUM VITAE 41

SMOKING GUN BAGEL SHOP

A cafe in the city center of Sydney. A narrow, but longitudinal, double layered space, with a north eastern light, lighting the space through three high windows to the side, and a wide main entrance. A simple cafe to be transformed into a space of in situ production and sales of wood fired bagels. From the two floor heights of the space, two spaces arise. One, the highest, with the new element in place, the oven, and the preparation and production area; another, at street level, with the sales point, and the eating area. Clients are now a part of the production and sales flow. They get to watch the scene as it is played by its characters. Honesty and transparency, character and authenticity, core ingredients of the product and brand, are played out for the customer to witness and taste. Both spaces, with its functional characteristics, are organised around two main elements: oven, on the preparation area; and sales point, on the customers area. Both are interlinked and organised in such way that allows for fluidity of everydays’ movements. All the elements are setout in search for an economy of the movements needed for the whole performance. Workers, customers, and bagels, flow through their own specific ways, intuitively and with ease. To empahsize this proximity with the production side, and the cosiness of it, the scale of the space is dicreased through the creation of two opposites, with two different colours, between ceiling and floor. The ceiling is now a dark reded ‘box’, with its limits determined by the ceiling height; and the floor merges with walls and lights, in a whitish tone, meating the ceiling with the oven.

FRANCISCO ROMĂƒO ARQUITECTURA

The timeless character of buildings is as much a part of nature as the character of rivers, trees, hills, flames, and stars. Each class of phenomena in nature has its own characteristic morphology. Stars have their character; oceans have their character; rivers have their character; forests have theirs; trees, flowers, insects, all have theirs. And when buildings are made properly, and true to all the forces in them, then they too will always have their own specific character. This is the character created by the timeless way. It is the physical embodiment, in towns and buildings, of the quality without a name.

ZE HOUSE

In a historical center, the surrounding is one of traditional houses with a main public square where all the neighbourhood’s gathering used to occur. The question arises... how to intervene in such historical site? The answer took form in a concrete box, assuming a the identity of an object, a new and unique object that, though in concrete, arises from a wood formwork, in a way that keeps the memory of the typical wood houses. It also assumes the color of the ceramic roof tiles. In this way, when looking down from the castle, one of the most significant buildings on the site, this concrete block becomes homogeneous with the rest of the buildings. Inside, the house uses simple materials, used in the most resourceful way. The wood of the formwork is used on the floors and on the few pieces of furniture that divide the different spaces. The same memory remains also in its interior. A concrete object that is no longer just a stone, but it gains time through memory.

MUZZLE DESIGN

Muzzle was born almost by chance. A mum and a dad were not really impressed with the children bedroom furniture available on the market, often showing poor choice of materials and lacking in personality. So they started looking for a new design, something cool and sustainable. But that proved to be challenging. Fancy design is prohibitively expensive. So mum and dad decided to do it themselves. They are both architects after all! That’s when they took up the challenge of designing something that would really amaze their children! So… let’s get to work! “We need something simple, fun and affordable. Here’s the answer, pieces connecting together like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle is just what we need!” Not a screw, nor a nail should be needed. No hammer, no dangerous screwdriver. Even little naughty two-year old Livia can help assembling. Right, let’s choose the material now, let’s google it … Here it is! A wooden colored plank of 2.5 m by 50 cm, one of those planks used in construction. Sturdy, waterproof and affordable! Lorenzo, 5, complains: “Mum, but my favorite colour is yellow!” All right then, got it! DoKa! That’s yellow and cheap. All dad Leo needs to do now is to digitally design the whole thing, the parts and the cuts, and email it over to his friend Paulo who owns a laser cutter! “But dad, let’s not waste anything; not even an inch! We must use all that plank!” The phone rings. It’s Paulo: “Hey Leo, I’m finished, I got the parts, but who are these characters?” Great, let’s now run fast to get our pieces and start assembling the furniture-puzzle of M-UZZLE. Wow, look at that! Just perfect! The edge is black. Of course! The laser burns the wood. This way when the single parts are assembled the characters are even easier to see!!! Well done dad! Now we just need to treat the wood. Use a clothe with natural wax or linen oil to protect the wood. Now you can spill water, milk, get paint or food all over it… do whatever you want! These are the long-lasting Muzzle! Everything is ready, we can start playing! “Lorenzo, let’s assemble the bench. How are you going to name it?”

PETER SAVILLE’S HOUSE

More than a neigbourhood that rises a simple response to an increasing population, the Alvalade neigbourhood, that from the 40th decade, under Salazar’s regime, represent a strong urban and social ideal. A neigbourhood for all social classes where all primal services were equally distributed within a radius of an average fifteen minute walk. It’s in this context, under a unique language, that emerges the project for a house, with a studio and a private parking lot, destined to the english designer Peter Saville. The territory in itself is a little square, in a corner, an empty space very common here, in the sense of increasing the public space. The house springs from this contradiction. The building, as its program, envolves according to the square of nine metres by nine metres and its diagonal, incorporating the public passage as an important element. Within this logic there are three volumes that stand out from the façade: the studio, the reunion area and the house itself; which creates different situations in the public exterior level.

HOUSES IN ALFAMA

Pátio D. Fradique is situated between Largo das Portas do Sol and S. Jorge’s Castle, in a passage of ambiguous character as it is integrated in the private route of Belmonte’s Palace - one of its limits. On another scale, another limit stands out, the retaining wall that outlines the citadel. It’s from these two elements that the proposal develops: redesigning the limit wall while containing eight houses and simultaneously allowing a direct connection between citadel and patio. The drawing of this wall is based on two realities: the tension between itself and its surroundings and the housing set that develops in its interior, assuming the character of a living wall that looks to Alfama through its gaps. These assume windows whose defensive structure, of a truncated pyramid, is inverted and is projected into the city The patio, by its new extension and in a way to continue its vertical character, is now constituted by a new structure, an underground one, associated to a cultural program.

THE HOUSE IS THE SHELTER

(...) And the mith dissolves. And between the little thing and the masterpiece I saw there were relations, as I know that they exist between the mason (or any other man) and the genious architect. (...) Fernando TĂĄvora

The house is the shelter. This is the premise that originates the dissertation developed for the integrated master, as well as the precedent projects, works developed along the last year of the architecture course.

The house, as habitation, is then studied as the shelter that it always has been. Since the prehistoric man to the contemporary primitive populations, we intend to exploit the concept of the shelter, in a way to better perceive the role of the architecture today. A concept that rapidly extends to the city.

Throughout this study, where realtions are established between the primitive man and contemporary artists as Richard Long or Lucio Fontana, we notice how intuitively man inhabits the worls, in a clear response to the way he perceives it, and so we reach Architecture, enhancing à lvaro Siza’s case.

Is then that essential questions, today camouflaged by aesthetic ostentation, distinguish and allow us to relate Architecture with the universe of all things.
