Interstitial for solo bassoon
John Clay Allen
Performance Notes Duration: c. 12'
interstitial | intər ˈstiSHəl adjective of, forming or occupying interstices. The term interstitial refers to empty space or the gap between spaces full of structure or matter. This piece is as much about the space between sonic events and gestures as it is the gestures themselves. The performer should strive to emphasize this sense of openness in the music and allow the piece to progress in an unhurried manner. Even the most violent and aggressive passages are contextualized by - and receive their character from - this emphasis on space.
Percussive attack; little tone
Dark/light timbres (alternate fingerings)
The notation is proportional: each line of music should be about 20 seconds long. The number of repetitions of headless notes under a feathered beam is left to the performer's discretion.
