Multiphonics Blow air through instrument; no tone Key click Flute: tongue pizz.; Oboe/ Bassoon: "tongue flap" Combined key click and tongue pizz.
Alto flute multiphonics are based on natural harmonics. The diamond-shaped note heads indicate fingering. Oboe and bassoon multiphonics are notated as in the range of the desired multiphonic, usually with a word or two describing the desired timbre. The players are encouraged to select multiphonic fingerings that produce the best results for them and their instrument/reed. The only exception is the "beating" multiphonic found in the oboe line on page 7. This sonority can be achieved with the following fingering:
Aeolian sounds Accelerate through gesture Dark and light timbres (alternate fingerings)
c The double trill in the oboe part on the same page can be played and alternating left and right G# keys.
Hold 2 - 3" Hold 4 - 6" W.T. Whistle tones
Glissandi "True" Glissandi are rarely possible throughout. Rather, the player must "fake it" by any means possible to create the illusion of a glissando.
