Expectations Sky expects morning light’s Quiet rise from rosy dawn A different edge of sky Darkness slowly succumbs Births sudden morning sun Sky expects noon time blue To temper morning gold Shadows meld and disappear Curved firmament’s expectation Phaeton’s soaring arc Sky expects light’s surrender As dusky charm entices Venus sudden appearance Followed by moony Jupiter The Zodiac quietly unfolds

Sounds and Silence Life’s filled with sounds Morning notes noon songs Endlessly lost as hours pass One day follows another Each with its melody Each with its rhythm Once in awhile stillness Where thoughts that perhaps Fear of death is the silence

Pale Rain Pale rain to the hushed horizon A white sail tests the mystery Of island shadow puppets In this morning’s pantomime

No Money Changed Hands There was no exchange of currency No barter of one good for another Negotiations unnecessary Over dappled diamonds Strewn across the bay

Welcome This morning waited for me A bit of pink from dawn’s slim clouds Seen through the second story window It knew today’s roses would form An aromatic bouquet in the dining room It expected the afternoon sun To hasten the umbrella shadow’s Patient march across the deck

Weather Report The deck faces west over the Salish Sea San Juan Islands cumulous clouds shadowed Rounded whiteness rises from the horizon Bereft of midwestern thunderous possibilities Infinite fractal edges contrast with Afternoon’s lapis lazuli and turquoise

Summer Afternoon Here and there clouds dull the sun bright bay In need of a song about light and glitter Yet all is well in spite of lyrical limitations Inherent as the wordless brisk breeze titillates Japanese maple leaves rouged seed pods Bright cloud edges lose out to Distant island silhouettes rising mist The still cerulean sky at its zenith Umbrellas soon furled with Salutations to sudden gusty winds

Evolution Islands and headlands frame Windy late afternoon light Shatters the bay’s surface Soon Venus rises briefly in Early July but flora and fauna Look and act like late August In these times of change Among winds clouds The Salish Sea The earth itself Where life always Finds a way

Gulls and Henry Miller Henry Miller wrote an essay devoted to the expertise required to dispose of trash garbage men they were called recycling brings some well deserved respect to the work except when arced wings wind surf seagulls remain unsung the ever alert sanitation crew they are rarely celebrated with their awkward webbed feet meant to paddle oceans and bays

Voyager when you don’t pay attention your mind might voyage surprise you with a journey surprise you with a scene never before conceived with this particular life’s itinerary some certainties are shed you lose yourself for awhile

Haiku

time moves silently tomorrow awaits its turn in midnight darkness

never seen before coming day greets the bright stars hear dawn’s welcome song
