After you arrive, your first stop should be the Chamber of Commerce, in the heart of the village on historic Riverside Drive.  The friendly staff will answer all of your questions, and help with maps, guides and anything else you need.  With so many choices, your most difficult decision will be where to begin! Why not start with a museum? Clayton is home to three, including the Antique Boat Museum. Visitors can stroll amidst the Museum’s priceless collection of over 300 boats including the elegantly furnished 106’ Gilded-Age houseboat “La Duchesse.” Enjoy a speedboat ride in a triple cockpit mahogany runabout or take up the oars yourself in a wooden skiff and explore the waterfront of Clayton. The Antique Boat Museum welcomes the public to the Oar, Paddle & Sail Nights hosted throughout the summer. The first weekend in August the Annual Antique Boat Show and Auction is scheduled and draws exhibitors

and vendors from around the world. Boat Building classes, entertaining educational programs for children and special family activities are available. Before leaving make sure you check out the Museum Store and pick up a nautical keepsake. The Thousand Islands Arts Center, home of the Handweaving Museum located in a historic village building on John Street, brings the visual arts alive in the 1000 Islands through art instruction and exhibits. The Arts Center also offers a variety of classes from painting, building rustic furniture to making your own pottery in

the new pottery studio equipped with two working studios year round. Tour their gallery of ever changing exhibits such as “Along The River’s Edge” that showcases the work of area artists or pieces from the museum’s permanent collection of hand-woven textiles and rare spinning and weaving tools. Visit the Arts Center Store, James Street, featuring works of local artisans, books, crafts, bead bar and more. The Thousand Islands Art Center hosts special events throughout the year including the Antique Show & Sale and Annual Craft Show.

Just around the corner on James Street is the Thousand Islands Museum. The TI Museum is famous for decoys, muskies and the rich heritage of river life.

The Museum gallery offers a history of life along the St. Lawrence River from yesteryear and a new archival library is open to the public to research river heritage. You can also learn more about Clayton’s colorful past at the popular “History at Noon” programs.  In the “Yesterday’s Memories” Gift Shop make sure to check out the St. Lawrence Tartan, the museum’s trademark.  The greens represent the cedars along the shore, the blues are the shades of the St. Lawrence River, and the red signifies the sunset over the islands. Also in the gift shop you will find a broad selection of gifts and souvenirs.  Annually the Museum hosts the Decoy & Wildlife Art Show & Auction.  The show includes hunting decoy contests as well as an auction.  Works of art

by well-known artists from all of the United States and Canada are displayed for purchase. The Clayton Opera House located on Riverside Drive recently underwent a $3.2 million renovation project and now operates as a year-round facility. The 1903 building is now air conditioned, fully accessible and offers both performance and banquet facilities. Events are added regularly to the Opera House schedule and include concerts, films, theatre, dances and lectures.

Perhaps you’d like to tour one our local wineries. Clayton’s climate combined with the constant moisture flow from the St. Lawrence River is a perfect match for growing cold hardy grape vines. Coyote Moon Vineyards, located in Clayton, is making wine from four grape varieties including Frontenac, Brianna’s, Marquette and Frontenac Gris evolved out of the University of Minnesota’s highly acclaimed Cold Hardy Wine Grapes Program. Free tours of the wine making area are available and a tasting room is open daily allowing visitors to sample before they purchase. The Thousand Islands Winery is New York’s most northern Farm Winery located approximately 7 miles North of Clayton. The winery occupies a historical 28 acre farm that was established in 1836 and has grape vineyards and a tasting room. Free wine tasting allows you to sample their wines and you can take a free tour of the wine production facility that starts everyday at 10am. The winery is open daily, year-round and hosts manys festivals throughout the year.

take a moment to relax... The local library on John Street welcomes visitors, and has Internet ready computers where you can check your e-mail. Summer sunsets provide a breathtaking backdrop for Clayton’s Waterfront concerts at Frink Park on Riverside Drive several Thursday nights in summer.  Jazz, brass ensembles, military, country, and contemporary music are featured at these popular evening events.  There may be a tall ship or navy vessel docked right there as ships travel to Clayton throughout the summer.

After a full day of activities, you’ll welcome a chance to relax at one of Clayton’s many restaurants.  Watch the boats go by from the deck of one of our river front eateries.  Be sure to ask a native whether that cargo ship was a  “laker” or a “salty”.  Unwind with a leisurely, gourmet dinner; or grab a quick bite at a cafe or pizzeria.   Have a sandwich wrapped to go and picnic at one of our beautiful parks. Don’t forget to stop for ice cream!

There is no better way to experience the beauty of the St. Lawrence River than from the bow of a boat. The spray in your face- the wind in your hair- it’s a feeling like no other. The magnificence of the sparkling water, set off by the picturesque Be sure to bring your own boat.  Clayton makes it easy to get your boat into the water. The village provides a public launch and docking at many points along the river including a 200-foot floating dock complex in front of the Village. Clayton also has a number of well-equipped full service marinas where you can buy gas, supplies, dock for the evening, or rent watercraft ranging from small fishing boats to pontoon “party boats”.

The Thousand Islands Regional Dock and Clayton Cruise Ship Terminal is conveniently located on the edge of the main shipping channel along the St. Lawrence River in historic Clayton, New York. The dock sits on the shoreline in front of Frink Park along Riverside Drive in downtown Clayton.

The Thousand Islands Regional Dock is able to host a wide scale of vessels – from tall ships to yachts, tugboats to cruise ships. The Thousand Islands Regional Dock and Clayton Cruise Ship Terminal is a U.S. Department of Homeland Security and U.S. Coast Guard certified 105c Port of Entry.

Explore the natural side of the 1000 Islands.  The 1000 Islands Region is filled with activities that take advantage of this natural paradise. Clayton offers an outdoor recreational playground to enjoy from fishing to kayaking, to diving and snorkeling, to golfing, hiking, biking and camping.

For two centuries, Clayton has been the center of 1000 Islands fishing action.  Years ago, the local fishing guides plied the waters off Clayton carrying the wealthy and famous on their annual fishing excursions.  Now the local guides have powerboats equipped with the latest fishing tackle, electronic equipment and safety gear

to ensure passengers’ safety and comfort. Your captain will ensure an exciting experience, and may even end your trip with a traditional shore dinner.   The clear waters of the St. Lawrence provide a fishing experience second to none.  In fact, USA Weekend recently named Clayton and the Thousand Islands the number one bass fishing spot in the country!  There are any number of game fish, sure to thrill the angler of every ability.  Northern pike, walleye, bass, perch, panfish and the elusive trophy muskellunge continue to

challenge fisherman from all over the country and attract professional fishing tournaments year after year.  Fishing maps are available, along with plenty of bait, tackle and advice, at local bait shops for those who would rather fish on their own.  Launch your own boat and venture out to discover your own “hot spot” or bring along a folding chair and cast off from the dock at Frink Park.  For your convenience, fishing licenses are available at many locations throughout Clayton.

in this area, allowing for very comfortable diving temperatures from May through October.  Both novice and expert divers will find a piece of paradise in Clayton.  Several dive businesses in the area can provide services for divers.  The St. Lawrence River is one of the premier diving sites in the country, and Clayton boasts the first natural features dive park in the Thousand Islands.   Underwater enthusiasts will want to dive right into the clear waters of the St. Lawrence River to explore many wrecks that rest on the riverbed.  The crystal clear water provides breathtaking access to the natural beauty just meters beneath the surface.  The water clarity provides excellent underwater visibility.  Horizontal visibility of 50-70 feet at 100-foot depths is not unusual.  The River is the resting place of hundreds of shipwrecks, some dating back to the late 1700’s.  The strong current found in some areas of the St Lawrence River creates excellent drift conditions for those who seek artifacts.  There is no thermo cline

Prefer to stay a little closer to the surface?  Snorkeling is popular, due to the river’s amazing water clarity.  Kayaking is very popular in Clayton, and exploring the islands is a very exhilarating experience.  Take a canoe or kayak and venture into the wilderness and wonders of the French Creek Wildlife Management Area (WMA).  Small game and songbirds are found in here in open meadows and hardwood uplands.  Waterfowl and furbearers find suitable homes as well in cattail marsh that borders the open waters of French Creek.  The WMA is also suitable for hikers and biking.  Unpaved roads within the WMA provide good access,

but foot travel or paddle is the primary means of movement throughout the area. For the more sports-minded among our visitors we offer several excellent golf courses for golfers of all skill levels.  Several area resorts offer golf and accommodations packages as well as meeting rooms and corporate golf tournaments.

Looking to exercise?  Clayton has a gym with day passes available or you can head up to Cerow Recreation Park where you can swim a few laps at the outdoor community pool, walk the paved recreation walking trail, play a set on one of the lighted tennis courts or shoot some hoops on the basketball court.

For those who are looking for a tables, hot showers and nearby access total outdoor adventure, camping to the river are amenities available. opportunities are abound in the Clayton area with both private and state parks offering a wide range of camping options.  Campers will find wooded tent sites, full hook ups, clean restrooms, ample picnic

a walking tour rich in history... Clayton is rich in river history. Downtown Clayton has been designated by the U.S. Department of the Interior as a historic district. This district is architecturally and historically significant as one of the most intact and cohesive collections of late 19th and early 20th century commerical buildings in northern New York. There are 31 buildings in the historical district, all built between 1854 and the 1920s. Stop in at the Chamber of Commerce when you arrive and ask for a weekly updated listings of events or a Walking Tour Map. The map will guide you on a walking tour of the village and will provide you with some interesting facts about the historic buildings you will see. Many individual brochures representing lodging, dining and other facilities are also available.
