ORIENTAL INSTITUTE FIELD TRIP Enjoy a guided tour of the Oriental Institute and lunch on your own at The Nile Restaurant.

URBAN PLANNING IN THE MIDDLE EAST Charles Hasbrouck, a Director at bKL Architecture, will discuss “Urban Planning in the Middle East,” focusing on the design of new cities that respect the culture and reflect the unique environmental conditions of the region. The talk will touch upon the history of city planning, review current trends in urban design and investigate the challenges of building sustainable communities in the desert environment. One of the largest new developments in the region, the Special Economic Zone in Al Duqm, Oman, will be used as a case study. Instructor: Charles Hasbrouck.

SUNNI AND SHI’ITE: TWO FACES OF ISLAM The relationship between two contrasting and competing interpretations of Islam – Sunni and Shi’ah – is one of the most important and most frequently misunderstood dimensions of Muslim culture. This informative presentation will explore the history of the split, its various manifestations over time and its implications today. Along the way, we’ll ask why Muslim extremism seems so often to be connected to Sunni groups. And we’ll take a look at Iranian Shi’ite culture and ask why it shows such intriguing promise. Instructor: Jim Kenney.

MONDAY THE HISTORY OF THE MIDDLE EAST When diplomats draw lines on a map to create countries and pay more attention to their political alliances and machinations than they do to the history and ethnicity of the peoples who will live in those countries, disaster ensues. The Middle East that emerged from WWI was the result of a series of blunders made by Great Britain with significant assists from France, Russia and the Ottoman Empire. We will enjoy the rich history of the region and then examine the map drawing and how that contributed to the turbulence of today. Instructor: Gary Midkiff.

WEDNESDAY INTERNATIONAL SECURITY AFFAIRS: THE MIDDLE EAST TODAY, ISLAMIZATION OR BALKANIZATION? A look at development of the present political structure(s) of the area since 1914 and the impact on state evolvements during and after WWI and WWII, national and religious evolvements afterwards and during the current unrest. What if the Ottomans had not joined the Central powers in autumn 1914? Are there lessons from former Yugoslavia for the Middle East and other regions? Instructor: Mike Zimmerman.

FILM: GREEN ZONE Participants will cap their week of studying the Middle East with an uncompromising thriller that explores the consequences of failing to study the Middle East, not to mention the result of putting boldface liars in charge of foreign policy. Instructor: John Kupetz.

OIL AND THE MIDDLE EAST Through a random act of nature, transacted over many centuries, the one item most needed by an industrial world is found in the greatest abundance beneath the sands of a region that had been largely unimportant since the apex of the Persian Empire. Join us for an examination of oil and how it has helped shape the role of the modern Middle East. Instructor: Gary Midkiff.

Quest! CULTURAL CHICAGO JULY 13-16

This Quest program will look at cultural Chicago through film, history and literature.

MONDAY FROM RICHARD J. TO RAHM THE MODERN MAYORS OF CHICAGO The sudden death of Richard J. Daley left the city in shock and politics in turmoil. For a week, nobody even knew who the new mayor actually was – the city charter didn’t specify who would take over! In this fascinating multimedia presentation, one of CLC’s favorite historians will trace the history of the mayors of Chicago from Michael Bilandic took through Richard M. Daley. We will see how shifting ethnic alliances, the rise of women voters and the challenge of bringing a rust belt city into the 21st century are reflected in the personalities of mayors such as Jane Byrne, Harold Washington and Richard Daley. Instructor: Barry Bradford. FROM AL CAPONE TO SAM GIANCANA ORGANIZED CRIME IN CHICAGO Organized crime came in with a bang – literally – with the rise of prohibition. And no city was more under the control of the mob than Chicago. This exciting look at the rise of the Chicago mob in the early days culminating with Al Capone finishes with a fascinating look at how Sam Giancana changed the Syndicate in Chicago from a group of bootlegging dogs to an international powerhouse that influenced American presidential elections and American foreign policy. We’ll examine how ethnic neighborhoods, Chicago city politics and the Kennedy administration all played into the tremendous influence of organized crime in Chicago. Instructor: Barry Bradford.

TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY

THURSDAY

CITY OF NEIGHBORHOODS, CITY OF IMMIGRANTS Chicago is a city of neighborhoods settled by waves of immigrants. The Irish came early. Soon there was a Germantown and then a Swedish area known as Andersonville, a Ukrainian Village, Polonia and Jew Town. Hungarians, Czechs, Slovaks, Italians and Greeks followed. In the morning session we will examine how each of these waves of immigrants tended to group with people of similar language and customs and created unique ethnic enclaves that made Chicago a cultural mosaic.

WONDROUS WRITERS FROM CHICAGO What do Nelson Algren, Gwendolyn Brooks and Sandra Cisneros have in common? All were Chicago writers and each revealed a particular cultural element in the “City of Big Shoulders.” Algren showed us the underbelly, Brooks brought the African American experience to light and Cisneros portrayed life in the Latino community. While Cisneros currently resides in Texas, her best known book, “House on Mango Street” takes place in Chicago and many references to locations in the city will likely be familiar. Join us for an exploration of these celebrated Chicago writers. Instructor: Sara Stephens.

In the afternoon session we will pick up the story of multicultural Chicago with the great African American migration to the city in the era of the world wars. Since the 1980s, it has been Asians, Indians, Puerto Ricans and Central and South Americans who have dominated the ranks of immigrants and who continue to make Chicago one of the most diverse and exciting cities in the world.

On our Wednesday tour we will see first-hand how many of these waves of immigrants left their unique mark on the city of neighborhoods. Instructor: David Groeninger.

FILM: THE UNTOUCHABLES Your week of discussing Chicago will end with a film about Al Capone. Why? Well as Sean Connery tells co-star Kevin Costner, “That’s the Chicago way.” Participants will view and discuss a controversial film that offers a chance to count city locations while debating what happens to historical accuracy in the face of myth, not to mention how adept Eliot Ness was at creating his version of reality. Instructor: John Kupetz.
