Home Design World Languages SEVEN WAYS TO RAISE A QUEEN BEE Nothing brings a smile to a beekeeper’s lips like finding a good-looking queen surrounded by her court. And nothing provides more pride than knowing she is homebred. Today the number of small-scale beekeepers is increasing and the demand for locally raised queens is growing. Purchased queens are often raised in areas of Africanized Honeybees or come from migratory bee operations where dangerous viruses are exchanged. Learn simple methods of raising a few healthy honeybee queens. With a few insights and a small amount of equipment, the backyard beekeeper can raise locally adapted queens from bee stock with a record of winter survival, good temperament and excellent honey production. THE LAKEFRONT AND CHICAGO PLAN OF 1909 Daniel Burnham famously stated “Make no little plans. They have no magic to stir men’s blood and probably themselves will not be realized. Make big plans; aim high in hope and work, remembering that a noble, logical diagram once recorded will never die, but long after we are gone will be a living thing, asserting itself with ever-growing insistency.” Without doubt, more than his skyscrapers or Symphony Hall, Burnham’s greatest legacy to Chicago is his Chicago Plan of 1909. Visit three parks that are jewels on the lakefront: Jackson Park, the Museum Campus and Lincoln Park, studying them in context of the Chicago Plan of 1909. This tour involves some walking. Art and Architecture CHICAGO ARCHITECTURE IN THE 1960S The 1960s were an interesting period in architecture, worldwide and in Chicago. It was the beginning of large scale mass-produced materials, assimilation of the modernist movement (which in Chicago was the fascination with the glass and steel skyscraper of Mies van der Rohe) and an interest in the space age, which also became translated in architecture. The architecture and design of the 1960s plays a pivotal role in bringing about contemporary architecture.

INTROVERSION AND EXTROVERSION IN CULTURE OF PERSONALITY In our culture of personality, as Susan Cain describes it, the individual most at ease in social situations—whether in the corporate world, at networking events, parties, on social media sites or in the classroom— thrives; they exist in a culture that places preference on one’s ability to extemporaneously market (whether of the self at a party or on a date, an idea to a colleague, for a boardroom presentation, in a professional development workshop, or when on an interview, for instance). Due to the observatory nature of the introverted personality, detecting subtleties is one of the introvert’s leading talents (for example, they are more adept at noticing the small fluctuations in peoples’ moods); introverts often notice things that extroverts do not—they are keen observers, and therefore, make great social scientists. They are just less inclined to spew their insights as they occur. Though some of the world’s most influential thinkers, leaders, and innovators have been introverts at their core, our culture of hyper-extroversion unavoidably generates punishment of introversion.

INTERNATIONAL SECURITY AFFAIRS: CAUSE OF WAR, HOW WARS END, MEANINGS OF VICTORY These are three core topics of strategic studies. The ancient Greek historian Thucydides will provide the framework to consider causes of war. A whole literature exists on war termination, which can range in effect from indecisive to concrete and final. We will discuss how time frame perspectives often change evaluations. Churchill wrote: The problems of victory are more agreeable than those of defeat, but they are no less difficult. These are large topics that the philosophers over history have considered.

ITALIAN AMERICAN MEDIA STEREOTYPE Italians and Italian Americans formed the largest ethnic group to fight in the U.S. military during World War II, and yet their parents were labeled enemy aliens who lived with burdensome restrictions, and in the case of thousands, forced internment and relocation. Italians showed great heroism in every war beginning with the Revolutionary War, and yet they are labeled lovers, and not fighters, according to media stereotypes. Italian Americans are one of the most law abiding ethnic groups in U.S. history, yet films and television shows continue to perpetuate the myth that somehow Italian culture means mafia culture. DONE RIGHT BUT GONE WRONG Hollywood likes to make art that makes money, and the result is sometimes a film that disappoints viewers or that viewers get wrong until the same film emerges as a surprising near-masterpiece long after its release. This series will examine films that disappointed or confused audiences or got sidetracked by misguided promotional efforts. We’ll show Paul Newman as the world’s worst sibling and Sean Connery as the cure for what ails Tippi Hedren. We’ll also watch Tom Cruise dancing in his underwear on his way to a good college, and we’ll view a politically astute film about killing dragons.

THE UNION MOVEMENT IN AMERICA In 1911 the Triangle Shirtwaist fire in New York City killed 150 young women. The women could not escape the fire because the doors to the factory were locked from the outside during the workday to ensure that none of the workers stole material from the company. The tragedy was a catalyst for both increased governmental regulation and increased union recruitment. Although we remember, and will talk about, dramatic moments like this and the first worker’s strike (New York printers in 1794), our story will start with Captain John Smith and his James River settlement in 1607 (he complained about a lack of skilled craftsmen and guild members). Unions have played a critical role in improving worker protection and standard of living in the face of many who tried to deny them both. Unions are much more than just bellicose advocates for protecting teacher pensions in Illinois – perhaps unions were the first civil rights movement.

THE CIA Harry Truman created the CIA when he realized that the disbandment of the OSS at the end of WWII was a mistake. The decision was a good one. However, from the beginning the behavior of the organization did not match their legal mandate and one U.S. president after another had their foreign policy initiatives negatively affected. Cuba, Vietnam and Iraq may be the most obvious failures, but there are more to discuss, as well as the key issue – how can we have a clandestine and covert organization within a democratic framework.

BETWEEN NORMALITY AND TERROR: EVERYDAY LIFE IN NAZI GERMANY Eighty years after Adolf Hitler’s ascent to power and the subsequent creation of the Third Reich in Germany, most of today’s research is focused on the system of terror, established by the Nazis, that ultimately led to the death and destruction of millions of people. While we will discuss the role of governmental surveillance and brutality— prominently represented by the secret police GESTAPO and the SS—we will explore first and foremost what daily life was like for ordinary citizens in 1930s Germany. By looking at various societal paradigms, such as education, employment, the role of women and cultural expression, we will gain insights into how the German people were oscillating between normality and terror and how the Nazis were able to turn Germany into a brutal and horrific Dictatorship.

Math TENMARKS: MATH PRACTICE AND COMPUTER TEST PREP (GRADES 2-4 AND GRADES 5-8) TenMarks, an amazing and fun online math resource, has just been redesigned to align with common core standards! Excellent for students struggling with math or for those wanting to strengthen, advance and challenge their math skills, it will help your child achieve success in meeting the new common core standards. A pretest will create a playlist designed around the standards your child needs to work on. 82 percent of students who used the program showed an increase in scores. Ninety-six percent of families who used the 2012 TenMarks summer program would recommend it to a friend. TenMarks combines problem solving with computer math, provides instant feedback and allows personalized math practice for students at any level through Algebra I. Your child will get the edge in preparing for computerized tests such as MAP testing with practice tests that address a wide variety of skills, including reading and setting up those illusive word problems. Parents are encouraged to stay for the first half-hour of the first lesson to learn how to use the program at home. The class fee includes online access to the TenMarks program at home through the conclusion of the class.
