Welcome to this latest issue of Take Note in which, as usual, we’ve selected resources based loosely around a theme. This time it’s PRAYER. Jesus told us how to pray in the Gospels. Here are His words from The Message (Matt 6:9): ‘With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply. Like this: Our Father in heaven, Reveal who you are. Set the world right; Do what’s best – as above, so below’. I love that. It does what it says on the tin. Why do we make prayer seem so difficult? Yes, I know it’s quite a mystery, but it’s actually all about talking to and with God.

This book offers 80 imaginative and creative ideas for setting up ‘prayer stations’, practical ways of praying that involve the senses - touching, tasting, smelling, seeing, and hearing, rather than simply reflecting, as we bring our hopes, fears, dreams and doubts to God. Developed from material tried and tested with small groups, the ideas here provide activities ranging from bubble prayers to clay pot prayers (via just about everything else in between), and have been designed to be used with grown-ups - of all ages!

Prayers that changed history MEET THE WRITER: TRICIA GOYER What inspired you to write this book? I’ve been a homeschooling mum for many years, and one of my favourite things is reading about historical heroes. Through the years I was amazed by how many historical stories involved prayer. For example, did you know that three days before Christopher Columbus found land his crew revolted and wanted to turn around? Columbus prayed about it and felt impressed to

ask for three more days. And it was on the third day that they found land. I started collecting these stories, and soon I knew it had to be a book! Yet I not only wanted to share these historical stories, but my goal also became to teach children how to pray themselves. That excites me! Of the 25 people featured, did any surprise you? The one that surprised me most was Mother Teresa. We’ve read so much

about her, but I was surprised that she’d felt her calling to care for the

missionary letters in Bible class and felt a call to serve with her own life.

In this book, she explores the stories of twenty-five notable people, including Martin Luther, Sojourner Truth, Helen Keller and St. Patrick, demonstrating how prayer shaped their lives and transformed history. These exciting heroes from the past and the amazing things they did to change the world may be well known, but we are probably less familiar with the role that prayer played in their lives. None of them would have been able to accomplish what they did without prayer.

When children learn about prayer and serving God it can change everything. There was another surprise, too, and that was Corrie ten Boom. The Hiding Place is one of my favorite books, but until I started researching more I had no idea that her family had been praying for the Jewish people for one hundred years. The prayers of generations influenced Corrie’s actions and faith during one of the hardest times in history. I love that! How do you see this inspiring readers to pray? I hope readers will be more active to pray in their own lives. I hope they also see that God desires to do more than they dare hope or imagine. God chooses ordinary people to do His greatest work on earth. This should inspire us all! What have you learned about prayer as you wrote this book?

Tim Keller reconciles your deep urge to pray with the difficulty you experience in getting started, finding the words and having the faith to seek its fulfilment.

Through this book, Joyce Meyer delivers practical advice and Biblical wisdom to help you triumph over any obstacles you face.

In this book, Philip Yancey explores the intimate place where God and humans meet in prayer.

He knows that regular and effective prayer is fundamental to every Christian and he explains that prayer is the main avenue by which you’ll experience deep and lasting change. He also understands why so many people struggle with prayer because, as he freely admits, he has struggled himself. This concise and practical guide will equip you to build your conversation and intimacy with God. Growing maturity in prayer will lead you toward fulfilling, in your own life, a workable culture of daily, weekly and monthly spiritual exercises and practices that will find you more connected to God, your world and to your own spirit.

8

By learning to lean on God’s power, you’ll be able to leave your fear behind and develop a life-changing sense of confidence. This compact edition is perfect for taking God’s assurance with you everywhere you go. Be encouraged that no situation is beyond repair and start living a life of joy and peace when you Let God Fight your Battles.

Prayer should be nourishing and uplifting, but it can also be frustrating, confusing, and fraught with mystery. Yancey tackles these tough questions such as; is God listening?, Why should God care about me?, If God knows everything, what’s the point of prayer?, Why do answers to prayer seem so inconsistent?, Why does God sometimes seem close and sometimes seem far away? and How can I make prayer more satisfying? In the process, Yancey comes up with a fresh new approach to this timeless topic. “I have learned to pray as a privilege, not a duty,” he says, and he invites you to join him on this all-important journey.

Daniel loved God. Daniel also loved the king. Daniel was good and loyal and true – and he prayed three times every day to God. Now there were some men who were jealous of Daniel because king knew that he was good the and loyal and true. The men thought up a nasty trick. ‘Make a new law,’ the men told the king. ‘Make everyone pray to you alone – because you are awesome and amazing and wonderful.’ The king was flattered. The king was foolish.

‘Oh – and if anyone does not obey this law, you could throw them to the lions …’ The king made the new law.

But Daniel loved God. Daniel was good and loyal and true. Daniel knew that God alone was awesome and amazing and wonderful – and he prayed to God just the same, three times every day. The jealous men told the king about Daniel. The king had no choice but to obey his new law. Daniel was thrown to the lions! The next day the king went to the lions’ den. He was very pleased when Daniel called out to him. ‘Hello, mighty King! Don’t worry – God has saved me from the lions!’ And the king set Daniel free. He told everyone to worship Daniel’s God – because He really was awesome and amazing and wonderful.

Moses looked after God’s people for many years. When he died God asked Joshua to lead His people out of the desert and into Canaan. Joshua took the people across the River Jordan, but when they reached the city of Jericho, they were frightened by the strong, high walls and the fierce, unfriendly people. How could they get through the city? God told Joshua that they must march around the walls for six days while the priests blew on trumpets. On the seventh day, they must march around the city not once, not twice, but seven times! So the people did as Joshua told them. When the priests blew their trumpets … and all the people shouted … the walls of the city tumbled to the ground! The promised land was theirs. After years of slavery in Egypt and more years wandering in the desert, God’s people had a home in the land of Canaan.
