What was the inspiration for Mas and Miek Ceramic House?

How did collaboration with your mother come about?

Why are your ceramic classes so popular?

By nature, ceramics allows you to slow down. We recognised that some people are looking to step away from technology for a while, to make something with their hands, not look at their phones, to completely switch off. It can be immensely satisfying in that way. We realised that people are attracted to the idea of making something beautiful and using it in their own homes too.

We have an incredibly close relationship which is the catalyst for our business. I grew up in mum's ceramics studio and eventually studied fine art, where I experimented using ceramics in my jewellery making.

Flexibility has made our classes popular. It's an open learning structure, where students of varying abilities - from the absolute beginner to the pro - have the complete freedom to work at their own pace around their own timetable.

What drew you to your new space at Newstead? The warehouse itself is really spacious, affording room for the studio but also providing areas for a mezzanine library and lounge, espresso and juice bar, and storefront. It's a really enjoyable environment.

What is the appeal of the local area? Newstead is attracting an interesting mixture of creative businesses. Close by is an art gallery, a textile factory, and a cluster of artists/ artisans in the warehouse buildings. There's an artistic undercurrent which we hope to nurture; we can imagine market days or a festival celebrating the creativity in our area.

Mum and I began running pop-up stalls for jewellery and ceramics, and then went on to the GoMA markets. Over time I shifted away from jewellery and into ceramics.

Tell us about your signature style. Mum and I both work at the wheel, and I do some hand building. But our practise is very much based on experimenting and developing glazes. We love seeing what happens to a piece by adding elements like copper, cobalt, iron, or titanium, or changing the atmosphere and pushing firing temperatures to the extreme. The results can be so beautiful... colours across the glaze make each piece unique. Sometimes we can't even describe how we've come about our results, although we do have our secret recipes. We love the elemental chance!

Students can book online, or use our booking App, with classes offered as a one-off, and in packs of four and ten. Because ceramics is a slow, processoriented craft, we do suggest that customers book more than one session if they want to produce a finished piece. But it’s not just ceramic classes, we’re a multi-function space. People are always welcome just to come in for a coffee, sit in our mezzanine lounge and library, and have a sticky-beak. It's a place for everyone.
