More than 1 million people visit Clear Lake each year to enjoy fishing and recreating on the lake, music and dancing at the Surf Ballroom & Museum, and community events downtown, like Color the Wind kite festival, July 4th Celebration, Thursdays on Main and Harvest Festival.
And come 2026, there will be a new front door to the community.
The Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce launched a $2 million “Building a Bright Future” capital campaign aimed at funding the expansion and renovation of its facilities last fall. Construction is slated to begin in the spring of 2025 and be completed by the summer of 2026.
“The space will allow us to better welcome visitors, attract new residents, and engage businesses and developers looking to invest and grow in Clear Lake,” said Stacy Doughan, Chamber President and CEO.
Clear Lake has seen substantial developments in business, housing and recreation within the past five years, and the Chamber Board believes now is the time for its facilities to better reflect the vibrant, welcoming spirit of the community.
Cornerstone ($25,000-59,999):
• Clear Lake Chamber Board
• ATURA Architecture
• Pritchard Family Auto Stores
• Farmers State Bank
• Kingland
• Bank Iowa
The project — identified as a goal by the Chamber’s 17-member Board of Directors in its 2022-2027 strategic plan — will more than double the current building’s size, providing a new, accessible welcome center, a dedicated event preparation area and modern meeting spaces.
The Chamber is a nonprofit organization, established in 1943, that serves nearly 500 members, welcomes thousands to its Visitors Center, and hosts 16 major community events that draw more than 330,000 people and have an estimated economic impact of $20 million.
It’s operated at its current location on the corner of Main Avenue and South Shore Drive — a roughly 1,500-square-foot building originally constructed in the 1960s to house a gas station and auto repair shop — since the 1980s, and minimal modifications have been made over the years to improve the space and its function despite significant growth in the Chamber’s staff, membership and events.
"The expansion is not about luxury; it's about necessity," said Sarah Nielsen, Chief Financial Officer of First Citizens Bank and Board Chair for the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce. "It's about creating a space that not only meets the needs of today's Chamber but also propels us into the future, making Clear Lake an even more attractive place to live, work, and play."
Champion ($15,000-24,999):
• Brad & Angie Barber, Robert Barber, Cabin Coffee Company
• Laird Law Firm
Donors can contribute directly to the Chamber or make a taxdeductible donation through the Clear Lake Development Foundation, supporting the project. Contributions can be made as one-time gifts or spread over up to five years.
Within the first three months of the capital campaign, the Chamber garnered significant support for the project, securing donations from the following community stakeholders:
Legacy ($120,000+):
• Hanson Family Foundation
• City of Clear Lake
• First Citizens Charitable Foundation
Visionary ($60,000-119,999):
• Clear Lake Bank & Trust
• CL Tel
During construction, Chamber operations will temporarily move to a different location in Clear Lake.
“This is more than a building project,” Doughan said. “It’s about amplifying our impact and making sure visitors and residents alike have a space that matches the vision we all have for Clear Lake’s future.”
The John K. and Luise V. Hanson Foundation has again demonstrated its commitment to enhancing the quality of life in North Central Iowa, contributing $250,000 to the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s "Building a Bright Future" capital campaign.
Their donation, the largest single gift to the $2 million campaign so far, highlights the Foundation’s enduring legacy of strengthening communities and supporting impactful projects.
“The Foundation Board liked this project because it fits with its desire to strengthen and enhance the quality of life in a neighboring community whose citizens worked for and supported the company they started in 1958, Winnebago Industries, and now they have been supporting the markets where the family
has their banking franchise and the employees that live in these respective communities,” said Craig Braget, Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer at MBT Bank.
John K. and Luise V. Hanson founded Winnebago Industries, Inc., in 1962 and Manufacturers Bank & Trust Company in Forest City in 1967. When they created their foundation in 1970, they established a philanthropic structure that provided a way to give back to organizations in the communities their employees called home.
The foundation, also known as the Hanson Family Foundation, has a special interest in projects that strengthen families through arts and culture, family recreation, and youth development/education.
Over the past 50 years, the Foundation has given out more than $64 million in gifts, touching tens of thousands of lives through nearly 1,000 organizations in more than 100 communities.
Beyond its contribution to the Chamber’s building campaign, the Hanson Family Foundation’s philanthropic footprint can be seen across North Iowa. Some notable partnerships have included funding for the Clear Lake Arts Center, Boman Fine Arts Center, Forest City YMCA, Camp Tanglefoot, Clear Lake Yacht Club Sailing School and many others. It also recognizes the value of innovative medical treatment to families and has philanthropic ties to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
The Hanson Family Foundation Board of Directors is made up of second- and third generation family members as well as community advisors from the cities in which there’s a MBT Bank location.
The First Citizens Bank Charitable Foundation, Inc. provided a major boost to the Clear Lake Area Chamber of Commerce’s “Building a Bright Future” capital campaign with its $125,000 donation.
The Charitable Foundation’s contribution underscores its commitment to supporting community-focused projects that drive economic vitality and enhance local infrastructure.
“As a community bank, First Citizens focuses on individuals and businesses in our local area for the bulk of our bank customer base,” said Joleen Fleming, First Citizens Bank Chief Operations

and Retail Officer. “The Clear Lake Chamber of Commerce helps North Iowa and Cerro Gordo County thrive through their dedication to attracting visitors to North Iowa and to the overall local economic and business environment.”
The First Citizens Charitable Foundation, established in late 1995, focuses on supporting charitable, religious, educational, scientific, and community development initiatives in the Iowa and Minnesota counties served by First Citizens Bank, including Cerro Gordo.
Since its inception, the Foundation has donated over $8.3 million to impactful projects, prioritizing efforts that strengthen local communities. Most large donations have been awarded for infrastructure improvements, like new construction and building maintenance.
Some examples of other projects the First Citizens Charitable Foundation has supported in Cerro Gordo County within the past 30 years include the Mason City Aquatic Center, Mason City Family YMCA, MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, North Iowa Events Center, Newman Catholic School Foundation, Northern Lights Alliance for the Homeless, Habitat for Humanity of North Central Iowa, among many others.
The First Citizens Charitable Foundation Board of Directors is made up of current and past employees of First Citizens Bank, as well as current and past board members of First Citizens Financial Corp, the holding company which owns First Citizens Bank.
Donors can contribute directly to the Chamber or make a tax-deductible donation through the Clear Lake Development Foundation, a 501(c)(3) that’s mission is to further the development of Clear Lake, Iowa, and the surrounding area for its citizens.

In Summer 2025, Clear Lake, Iowa, will unveil the highly anticipated Surf Ballroom Music Experience Center. This innovative, state-of-the-art facility, located just steps from the historic Surf Ballroom, promises an immersive and educational journey through music history while celebrating the venue's legacy as one of America’s most iconic music destinations.
The Music Experience Center will feature a 1,800-square-foot immersive space, using cuttingedge virtual projection technology to bring the golden era of big band sound, the rise of rock ‘n’ roll, and the ongoing influence of the Surf Ballroom to life. Visitors will be able to experience the magic of music history in a completely new way, with interactive exhibits and stunning visuals that are similar to popular experiences like “Van Gogh: The Immersive Experience.”
“Those of us at the Surf feel very passionate about a musical moment in time and in history and that is the Day the Music Died, but it’s been our goal to see that the music never dies,” said Jeff Nicholas, Surf Ballroom Board President. “We feel like we’re the caretakers of that moment in time, and it’s now become apparent to push that farther into the future that we must do something different, something bold, something innovative and that is what the MEC is all about.
I truly believe it’s going to be a one-of-a-kind space where we’re going to be able to tell that story in a way that will impact people when they leave here.
- Jeff Nicholas
By: Libbey Hohn
In addition to the immersive space, the Music Experience Center will offer a visitor center, box office, gift shop, expanded lesson studios, and a versatile conference space with a catering kitchen, capable of hosting up to 100 guests. The center will serve as both an educational hub and a cultural gathering space, further cementing the Surf Ballroom’s role in music education and enrichment.
The Surf Ballroom is already legendary for hosting the final performance of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and J.P. "The Big Bopper" Richardson on February 2, 1959, an event forever known as “the day the music died.” Since opening its doors in 1933, the Surf has continued to welcome some of the world’s most iconic musicians, making it a must-visit destination for music lovers worldwide.
The Music Experience Center will also be part of the broader Surf District revitalization, which includes a new gateway arch marking the entrance to the district, along with streetscape improvements and enhanced lake access featuring a scenic dock. These upgrades will create a vibrant and welcoming space for both visitors and locals to enjoy.
Thanks to generous support from grants such as the $4.37 million Destination Iowa Grant and a $400,000 Community Attraction and Tourism (CAT) Grant, along with private investments, the Surf District revitalization represents a $35.2 million investment in Clear Lake’s future as a cultural destination. This exciting transformation ensures that the legacy of the Surf Ballroom will continue to thrive for generations to come.
Whether you’re a local or a visitor, the Surf Ballroom Music Experience Center invites you to be a part of a living legacy. Don’t miss the chance to immerse yourself in Clear Lake’s musical history and join us in celebrating this exciting new chapter when the center opens this summer.

Clear Lake is a 3684-acre natural glacial lake with exceptional fishing all year long. The maximum depth is 18’ and there are no motoring restrictions. Amenities at Clear Lake include boat access, fishing jetty, accessible pier, boat rental, picnic areas, beaches, trails, accessible facilities, playgrounds, restrooms, camping, hard surface boat ramps and fish cleaning station.
Popular fish species include bigmouth buffalo, black crappie, bluegill, channel catfish, common carp, flathead catfish, green sunfish, largemouth bass, muskellunge, northern pike, pumpkinseed, walleye, white bass, white crappie, white sucker, yellow bass and yellow perch.
Walleye angling has been excellent the past few seasons. There are good numbers of 15-17 inch Walleye for anglers to harvest. The Yellow Bass population has improved some, but still is much lower than the fishery supported a decade or so ago. The size quality of Yellow Bass is very good. Crappie are doing well in Clear Lake. Anglers consistently catch crappie during all seasons or angling. Muskellunge angling remains excellent. Channel Catfish is another species worth targeting on Clear Lake.
Clear Lake has a protected slot limit on Walleye. All fish 17-22 inches must be immediately released unharmed. For more regulations, visit iowadnr.gov/fishing or pick up a fishing regulations brochure at the Visitor Center or DNR office.
Purchase online at license.gooutdoorsiowa.com or visit Clear Lake Bait & Tackle or Brothers Ace Hardware.

Near the shore of Clear Lake, across from the historic community since its establishment in 1856. The park remains a place where families, visitors, and community members come together to enjoy the outdoors all year long.
At the top of the park stands the open-air gazebo, a gathering place since 1919. This historic structure, along with surrounding markers, honors John Kopecky, a key figure in Clear Lake’s musical heritage. Kopecky, who mentored Meredith Willson and founded the North Iowa Band Festival in Clear Lake, conducted concerts from this very spot for many years. His legacy is celebrated on historical markers in the gazebo area, where you can learn more about his contributions to the local music scene.
The small gazebo made for cramped quarters, so Municipal Band Director Ludvig Wangberg was the major force behind the construction of the current bandshell. Dedicated on June 19, 1955, the bandshell was designed by Edward Novak of Decorah, and was meant to resemble a sail. The Lakeview Community Room was added to the rear of the bandshell in 1999. In July 2001, the band shell was renamed in honor of Wangberg (1923-2017), who in addition to directing the Municipal Band for 55 years taught music at Clear Lake High School, directed the Drum and Bugle Corps and choirs at Zion Lutheran and Galilean Lutheran.
Along with the bandshell updates, the historic merry-go-round, a favorite of many for decades, has been carefully restored, preserving a piece of City Park’s history for future generations to enjoy. The park’s playgrounds, including the nautical inspired playset, offer a fun place for children to explore, while the surrounding trees and open spaces make it an ideal spot for picnics, walks, and outdoor events.
“ “
We’re thrilled to share the updated bandshell and Lakeview Room with the community. From the new domed ceiling and stage lighting to ADA access and refreshed amenities, these updates honor the original design while enhancing the experience for everyone. It’s a privilege to continue preserving Clear Lake’s parks and traditions for future generations.” – Jim Jackson, Parks Superintendent.
Today, City Park continues to host a variety of activities, from concerts and festivals to quiet moments in nature. The historical markers near the bandshell offer insight into the park’s role in the community and its connection to Clear Lake’s past. Whether you’re attending a concert or simply enjoying the beauty of the space, City Park remains a place to experience the history, music, and memories that have made it a central part of life in Clear Lake.
