IN PARTNERSHIP WITH

Welcome

Welcome to the 2021 Jersey Charity Awards and thanks to our sponsors Jersey Finance who are donating the prizes, the Ana Leaf Foundation who met the cost of this event, and, of course, our judges. The purpose of the Jersey Charity awards is not just to celebrate the achievements of the finalists and winners, but also to inspire the other Jersey charities to innovate and aim for even higher levels of excellence and shout about it. The last year has been one full of challenges:• Fundraising has been more difficult. • Volunteers, those incredible people that keep our charities going, have not always been able to volunteer, and; • There has often been increased demand for the vital services our charities provide. But as you will see from the winners and finalists announced, the charities have risen to those challenges. I congratulate and thank them all.

The Charities This is the sixth Jersey Charity Awards and 24 charities put themselves forward to be recognised. They each submitted their main charity objectives, highlighting their individual efforts. These objectives have been included in this programme and offer a valuable insight into their charitable work. Furthermore, each entrant submitted an application form which included: • A description of a project for which the organisation deserved to be recognised • The problems that were addressed and the areas requiring improvement • The plan of how the problems were tackled and targets met • Who was involved and how much it cost • The results of the project • How the prize money would be spent This offered a more detailed narrative on the extraordinary work accomplished and was carefully considered by the judges before the Small, Medium and Large category winners were decided. 9

2021 Entrants Outstanding Achievement, Small Category Focus on Mental Illness

Our aim is to preserve, and where possible improve, the quality of life of all those in Jersey affected by severe mental illness including families. Our vision is for every person in Jersey with a severe mental illness to have the opportunity to fulfil her or his potential, and participate in and contribute to all aspects of life and citizenship. We also aim to work for a better public understanding of severe mental illness by seeking to ensure that its key differences from other aspects of mental health and well-being are well understood.

We practice as a non-profit-making independent charity with an emphasis on giving the patient a voice. We seek to: influence laws, policies and procedures which affect the rights of people suffering mental disorder/illness and the rights and wishes of people whose capacity is at issue; to champion human rights and address stigma relating to mental illness; to promote partnership working within the voluntary and community sector and to enhance and support the knowledge, training and experience of mental health professionals working with our client group.

The JBC aims to make biological recording and conservation inclusive, ensuring that everyone can contribute to the protection of local species.

Entertainment Parklife Choir Parklife Choir started up around 2008. Set up by Gerry Padden from Grace Trust and BBC Radio Jersey’s Roger Bara. This was inspired by the concept of giving a mix of folk, from mostly difficult backgrounds, the opportunity to be a part of something. Roger stayed involved until 2012. Then in 2013, Vini started working at Grace Trust and fell into the role of leading on guitar and alongside AJ Fells on bass. We sing where we are welcome, from the Island Games to the Opera House, from care homes to the Fete de St Helier and the Jersey Boat Show and at Christmas parties or funerals for those we have lost along the way. We are not a pretty choir and don’t always sing songs associated with a choir, but we can make you laugh or make you cry. We feel for the hurting, the rejected, those overcoming adversity, those who groove on finally belonging, despite what life can throw at them.

Aureole Music Aureole Music was set up in March 2020 during the Covid-19 crisis to raise money for local charities working with the lonely and the isolated in our community in Jersey. We chose to do this by bringing together singers across the island to form the Aureole Choir, a virtual online community choir made up of singers from all over the island. The name refers to the aura around the sun (which can also be called corona… but this is an altogether more pleasant corona!)
