Dear Friends, I trust you have stepped into 2018 with determination, strength and sanguinity! Just add vision and flair, for the Chinese Zodiac lets us understand that if we manage to integrate all the change of the previous year into positive action, then we will get what we want out of life: from 16th February 2018 to 4th February 2019, we are supposed to get our wish in a big way, as the year of the Earth Dog gets underway. Indeed, the element of earth will become very important to all this year, bringing more reasonableness and stability. Where last year may have had us scrambling to keep up with all the opportunities coming our way, we get to settle this year and start feeling confident and at ease. Prosperous Year to every one of us! Did you know that it takes you an hour and a half to fly from Accra to São Tomé, the capital city of the archipelago of São Tomé and Principe? You might not know also that even if it is still Africa, the culture, the singular history of the Santomean people, their geography, their ecology, even their architecture half-way between Portugal and the Antilles give the archipelago a true unique character. But guess what? You now have the opportunity to acquire a property in São Tomé, and, depending on the purchase option you will settle on, you can expect a certain guaranteed income for 5 years. Kindly take time to peruse closely our dedicated 10 pages on ‘Investing in Pestana Vila Maria Property in São Tomé’, bearing in mind that the island we are talking about attracts an enormous number of tourists every year, and that its investment prospects are huge. It is our pleasure to introduce to you a young artist, a Ghanaian photojournalist who is on his way to restore its badge of honour to photography in this period of amateur picture snapping. Douglas Anane-Frimpong loves drones, and he moves with the times. Douglas has produced some stunning photographs with his drone, expressive of exceptional perspectives of the scenes he targets. As you will see in this edition, there can be beauty in clutters. In subsequent editions, we will bring you more artworks by Douglas. We entreat you to log on to our website, www.enjoyaccra.com, and, of course, to subscribe. Efforts are ongoing to improve what is presented to you and to make it more user-friendly. Look out for our application very soon and remember: your remarks and suggestions are always welcome, as we care for what you care for. Happy Valentine Day to you all, and don't forget: Ghana Chocolate is in order all month long!

NTS ENJOY!

Investing in Property in São Tomé São Tomé and Príncipe, the Island Nation

S

ão Tomé and Príncipe is an archipelago - or more precisely a twin-island - seated on the Ecuador in the Gulf of Guinea, off the western equatorial coast of Central Africa. Its 960 Km2 total land area accommodates most comfortably the 215,000 inhabitants. Its colonial history, beautiful wild beaches, the Ôbo Natural Park, the unique natural environment, make São Tomé and Príncipe a dream destination for everyone. Discovering São Tomé and Príncipe is a bit like finding a treasure because you would like to keep for yourself alone these lost confetti in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean where sand seems whiter than elsewhere, water more turquoise and the forest greener. You will enjoy having a feel at ecotourism, São Tomé and Príncipe’s major asset: the 290-km2 Ôbo Natural Park, the leatherback turtles, more than 700 different species of plants and flowers including bright-coloured orchids and giant begonias, over 50 different species of birds including the world’s smallest ibis, the equatorial primary forest, etc. 6 | Jan-Feb 2017 ENJOY No 126

DISCOVERING SÃO TOMÉ AND PRÍNCIPE IS A BIT LIKE FINDING A TREASURE

Moreover, ocean is within reach, offering beautiful wild beaches, scubadiving, snorkelling, underwater hunting, big fishing, boat trips, whales, dolphins, etc. What’s more, you are guaranteed a fantastic experience driving the Quad 4x4 (Linhai 4002D) on all-terrain routes, with STP Quad Unipessoal Lda, the on-the-spot professional quad renting company. Friendly Deborah and Loris Izidoro are looking forward to welcoming you and taking you visiting unforgettable picturesque places. In short, a trip to the islands of São Tomé & Principe is exceptional in many respects. It is actually a ride off the beaten track, and into a dense and still-intact equatorial nature, among an astonishing culture and history, but above all a welcoming, engaging and smiling people. São Tomé & Principe makes for an authentic destination. From Ghana, the most evident way to fly to archipelago is by TAP Air Portugal, the flag carrier airline of Portugal. e

Google Device Bug Chokes Home WiFi Networks A bug in the software used by Google Cast devices such as Chromecast and Home can slow down or crash WiFi networks. The problem -- initially believed to be isolated to a particular router model made by TP-Link -- appears to affect models made by other manufacturers, including Asus, Linksys, Netgear and Synology. Complaints on a Google user forum brought the problem to light earlier this week. Forum user Alastair Hadden's network problems started after installing Google Home Max, he wrote. "Initial setup was fine, everything was working (Assistant, streaming services), but then my WiFi network went down, which required a hard restart of modem and router to fix. It took it going down a few more times for me to realize the Max was causing it."e

PARENTS' CORNER

The Way I

Teach My Kid

PAMELA LI, CONTRIBUTOR MOTHER, AUTHOR, THINKER

Give Them Reasons To Respect Embrace learning moments Parenting is one of the hardest jobs in the world. Parents spend so much effort, time and money to care for their little ones. Their entire lives changed and started to revolve around their children the moment they were born. It is only fair and natural that we expect their respect. But little children don’t understand that. And to be fair, they didn’t ask us to do all this! We ourselves decided to take on these responsibilities. If we don’t respect them but at the same time, expect them to respect us, that is just hypocritical. Think about a chain smoker asking his child not to smoke. Respect cannot be demanded. It can only be earned. So, earn it! Give your child reasons to respect you by being a respectful role model, modeling respectful behavior to everyone, including our children.

Apologize When You Screw Up Not that I’m saying I’m never harsh to my child. As mentioned, I do sometimes scream when I’m at my wit’s end. So I get it. I understand the occasional outbursts in the heat of the moment, especially when we’re dead tired doing all sorts of grownup stuff, like working, housekeeping, and what else, parenting. Despite that, I will never use it as the default way to treat my child, nor will I justify doing so is OK or necessary. Whenever I did lose my temper, I felt guilty and I would give myself a time-out to calm down. Afterwards, I explained to her why I was so upset before. I taught her that having emotion was normal, but screaming was not OK and I said sorry to her. A mature, respectful grownup takes responsibility and apologizes when he or she makes mistakes.

Final Thought Treating children disrespectfully will just make them lose their respect for you (think about the mean boss example). If you’re lucky and your kids are not the stubborn type, you may get temporary compliance out of them, which may seem like respect. But it is not. Years later, when they’re all grown up, you may wonder why your kids don’t respect you anymore. That is because you have modeled the disrespectful way well since their childhood. e

NONI JUICE: THE SUPERFRUIT BEVERAGE THAT BOOSTS IMMUNITY & FIGHTS PARASITES

There is a high-antioxidant superfruit that you absolutely must know about. I’m talking about noni, a fruit that’s earned its name as a superfruit due to the phenomenal antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties noni and, more specifically, noni juice contain. Noni juice is so amazing it’s even been labeled a wonder food.

Carrot & Carrot Juice Nutrition 1. Packs an Amazing Antioxidant Punch You’ve probably heard alot about antioxidants. Foods that contain antioxidants are great because they may help prevent disease-causing cell damage. More common antioxidants are anthocyanins, beta-carotene, catechins, coenzyme Q10, flavonoids, lipoic acid, lutein, lycopene, selenium, and vitamins C and E, which can be found in many foods and as dietary supplements. Noni and grapeseed oil are among two sources where you can find many of these antioxidants. Antioxidants help reduce damage caused to cells due to oxidative stress. This oxidative stress can come from free radicals, which are highly unstable molecules, and naturally form when the body converts food into energy, such as 20 | Jan-Feb 2017 ENJOY No 126

2. Fights Pain Associated with Tumors The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health reports that noni, ginkgo biloba, isoflavones, pomegranate, and grapeseed extract may be cancer-fighting foods. In particular, the anticancer properties of anthraquinones make noni the superfruit of interest. The anthraquinones, which are naturally occurring phenolic compounds, have been found to possibly prevent glucose from entering tumor cells, preventing metastasis, ultimately leading to cell death. This, in turn, is helpful in slowing the growth of cancer cells. 3. Combats Inflammation and Boosts Immunity Research published in the Journal of Natural Products shows that a “new fatty acid, a new ascorbic acid derivative, and a new iridoid glycoside, a metabolite important for metabolism” were studied along with 13 compounds found in fermented noni fruit juice. The study showed detoxification benefits due to the enzymes known as quinone reductase. This suggests great anti-inflammatory traits, making noni juice a strong anti-inflammatory food. 3. 4. Helps Reduce Cholesterol A study was conducted ofcigarette smokers, which as we know are at particularly high risk for over the top cholesterol levels. The study, which was reported in the Scientific World Journal, gave noni juice to heavy smokers daily for 30 days. The findings revealed much lower cholesterol levels and triglycerides after consuming noni and, therefore, less inflammation in the body. 5. Provides Cellular Repair Noni may be perfect for cellular repair. It contains colorless alkaloids, and alkaloids are critical in maintaining a healthy balance in the body. Studies show that the body actually produces an alkaloid called xeronine, which activates enzymes. According to Dr. Ralph Heinicke, a biochemist, xeronine is a musthave for our bodies. Where it gets tricky is that as soon as xeronine is found in the body, the protein in our bodies consumes it right away, leaving us with little, if any, for cellular repair needs 6. Prevents Parasitic Disease Noni juice just may help prevent parasitic disease. Leishmaniasis is a parasitic disease typically found in tropical areas and southern Europe from sand flies, which are much smaller than the average mosquito we know today. This has become more important due to drug resistance and some complications caused by possible combined HIV infection. e

Also, congratulate them when they succeed, help them learn from their mistakes in supportive ways and always encourage further learning.

CONGESTION GALORE IN OUR COMMUNITIES pending hours stuck in heavy traffic while commuting to our various places of work has become an inevitability of life in almost every part of the world including, of course, Ghana. The phenomenon is at times referred to as ‘Congestion’. But congestion is not experienced only on the roads. Congestion is indeed all around us. Sometimes, we try to make life easy for ourselves by managing the situation, but at other times... Be that as it may, let us choose to make the best out of a bad deal by raising up above the inevitable ‘congestion’ and admire the beauty in the clusters. With his drone, Douglas AnaneFrimpong, a photo-journalist with Daily Graphic in Accra, has hovered over the topic. Enjoy his pictures taken from above.

BEAUTY IN CLITTER

Douglas Anane-Frimpong the artist to whom we owe these expressive photographs on the theme ‘Beauty in Clutter’, is a former Visual Arts student of Accra Academy. He later graduated from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi with a Bachelor's Degree in Arts (Graphic Design) in 2001, after which he started practicing as a Graphic Designer and Photojournalist. Douglas has been using drones for close to 2 years now. As evidenced in these photographs, the drones have really added a “dazzling perspective” to photography. Hear Douglas: “Drones give me the flexibility around my subjects. I also get a 3D perspective and a bird's eye view of the subject without any hassle of having to climb onto high structures”. He adds: “With my understanding of Photography and Art in general, I have been able to get very fascinating and artistic images with the drones since I started using them”. Douglas worked with Graphic Communications Group Ltd. as a Designer from March 2010 to December 2012. He is currently the Head of Photo (Photo Editor) for the Graphic Communications Group Ltd., a position he has held for the past six years. fter last year's powerful year of the fire Rooster, you're ready to integrate all that change into positive action to get what you want out of life. From February 16, 2018 to February 4, 2019, you'll get your wish in a big way, as the year of the earth Dog gets underway. The element of earth will become very important to all signs this year, bringing more groundedness and stability. Where last year may have had you scrambling to keep up with all the opportunities coming your way, this year you get to settle into one or more of them, and start feeling confident and at ease.

R a t Usually, you don’t let things bother you, Rat. You’re too busy having a great time and making your goals come true. You’re driven like that But during the year of the earth Dog, you may find that you’re more determined than ever to make some of your larger goals happen. You’ve put all the smaller steps into place, and now it’s time to reap the rewards of all your hard work. Just as you know how to work hard, though, you also know how to play hard. Planning a once-in-alifetime vacation lets you blow off steam and celebrate the fruits of your labor.

Ox Your sign of the Ox is one of the more dependable. Like the Dog, you share a need to be appreciated. During the year of the earth Dog, your friends, family, and mates find so many ways to show their affection, particularly around the 32 | Jan-Feb 2017 ENJOY No 126

Though plans can sometimes go awry, you’re not afraid to look silly once in a while, as long as you get where you want to be.

Tiger It is a “to be continued” story for Tigers looking for love as you get a chance to do it again. The same is true in your close personal relationships. It goes to show you that often things are simply postponed, not concluded. A similar tale happens professionally this month. Someone overlooked something that was subtly obvious recently. If you think this is the case, you need to get people to work together and find it in the 30 days following the new moon phase. A hint: Only ask people you trust to help. Get out the first-aid kit and fix it.

Rabbit Hold close and nourish your close personal relationships now. We get busy and tend to forget how love really feels. We get so comfortable together that we tend to take things and people for granted. Is it love or will the bond of friendship blossom? Recognize the direction life holds and take advantage of the opportunities available in the 30 days following the phase. The moon is the fuel propelling you through January’s beneficial career experiences.

ask Billie Dear Billie, I married my late wife when her children were five and seven. I thought we were a united, happy family until she died of cancer when they were in their early teens. I always got involved in every aspect of their lives and tried to do everything I could as a single father, for example, all the usual house chores: I was their cook, nurse, counsellor, going to all their parent-teacher evenings, dropping them to play dates and driving them back and forth to their respective universities. Now they’re married with children of their own and don’t want to know me. They’ve both reconnected with their biological father, who had nothing to do with them when they were young, and they won’t return my calls. I am remarried to 34 | Jan-Feb 2017 ENJOY No 126

Gratitude is not given, even though you may deserve more. It is sad when we go the extra mile only for people to take us for granted. Please don’t give in to bitterness and anger, it will only affect you. Good luck. e

After all, your current wife has taken their mother’s place and many children have issues with this. Perhaps your stepchildren would agree to see you on your own? Their biological father being back in their life could be another probable reason for their attitude. He is now their only surviving parent and it is understandable that they

ADVICE CORNER

Dear Billie, I have always felt my daughterin-law didn’t like me and now I have discovered something that confirms it. I was recently babysitting my granddaughter when she asked for another blanket. I opened a cupboard to discover all the perfumes, clothes and gadgets I’ve ever given my daughter-in-law over the years. Everything was still in its packaging. Clearly, she never uses anything from me on a point of principle. I’m not sure how to handle this but all I know is that it has become uncomfortable to even see my grandchild. Do I confront her or should I just keep away? Melina in West Legon

e

------------------------------Dear Melina, Confront is a strong word. I don’t think you should do anything that causes a rift between you, your son and your grandchild, because you could come off worse. One way of looking at this is that your daughter-in-law is not obliged to like or use the gifts you give her – once they are handed over, they are hers to do with as she pleases. I can only imagine how hurt you must have been seeing all your gifts unopened but one can wonder why she did not simply pass them on to a charity shop. I suggest you stop all future giving, accept that some people have peculiar ways and concentrate on being a loving grandmother. Good luck e

Dear Billie, I am in a serious predicament. My fiancé is pregnant but I have also been having sex with her twin sister who has just told me that she is also pregnant! I feel lousy now and everything has become a nightmare. It seemed like fun at the time to sleep with twins but of course I did not foresee this outcome. I have tried to talk some sense to the twin sister and asked her to go for an abortion but she won’t hear a word of it. My initial reaction was to leave town and go as far as I can because I know their father will crucify me. This is a rude awakening of how irresponsibly I have lived my life and I really need to fix this but don’t know how. I really need your help. Desperate Daniel in Tema e

------------------------------Dear Daniel, You have been busy!! What can I say that you haven’t already told yourself? Yes, irresponsible but somehow there is a glimmer of integrity in this huge mess that you are in.

The fact that you have not legged it to the other side of the planet tells us that you do want to fix this. Coming clean comes to mind. You could have a talk with your fiancé, the sister, their father and laying it all on the table. You do realize that this is not the type of secret you can hide for very long; nine months is usually the time frame. The earlier you come clean, the better for all concerned. Remember you were not the only culprit in this, your fiancé’s sister did have a big part to play since she knew you are engaged and thought it was still fine to continue having sex with you. The father would possibly be the best person to know what’s best for his daughters. You did not mention their mother. Is she around? If yes, she definitely needs to be part of the discussion. Daniel, you will have to ride this wave unfortunately but coming forward will speak volumes for you; you did act recklessly but you don’t have to be a coward! Be a man, take a deep breath and go for it. I suggest you bring a friend or family member with you as you will definitely need support. Good luck and please let me know how you all are.e ENJOY No 126 Jan-Feb 2017 | 35

Be Your Own VALENTINE

LOUISE JENSEN

What is it about Valentine’s Day that can leave women shivering with expectation and men shaking with fear (or vice versa)?

I

have friends who totally embrace the romance and celebrate wholeheartedly, but I also know of couples who have such wildly different ideas that the day inevitably ends with one, or both parties sulking in a corner. When people can’t communicate honestly regarding their ideals and expectations is it any wonder their needs aren’t met? I used to be the worst at this. “It’s too commercialized for me," I'd say, loudly, in the days leading up to the 14th. "It's just another way of extracting money by mass producing cards and novelty gifts.”

36 | Jan-Feb 2017 ENJOY No 126

In reality though, when it got to the actual day, I'd be wrestling envelopes out of the mailman’s hands, searching for cards. Every time the office door opened I'd pray it was a florist with flowers for me.

“You expect me to cook?” I'd cry in the evening. “You could have made an effort.” Yes, I know I was unreasonable, but I wanted to feel special. Growing up in a family that never mentioned the L word, I wanted validation that I was lovable through over-priced red roses and heart- shaped chocolates. What I didn’t realize was that the love I was actually lacking was self-love, and no amount of cuddly bears holding balloons was going to fix that.

VALENTINE'S DAY

The first year I spent Valentine’s Day as a single adult was a revelation to me. I spent half an hour on the phone listening to my friend tell me about the love letter she had received from her boyfriend listing all the things he loved about her. When I hung up the phone, fighting back tears, I decided to write my own love note to myself. I found it painfully hard but ultimately so liberating and it's now something I do every year regardless of my relationship status. I no longer place pressure on anybody (including myself) as I know I am loved (especially by me) and worth loving. These are all signed and dated and really lovely to look back on from time to time. This is a small excerpt from last year’s letter. “I love myself even though I am perfectly imperfect. I love myself even though I feel down from time to time, it’s ok to not be ok. I have total trust that I can support my own emotional and financial needs and will always take care of myself. I love the way I always try to be kind to others without sacrificing my own needs.”

Why not give it a go? If you feel really uncomfortable at the thought of doing this, then it's really the perfect exercise for you.

Portugal: Court orders Psychiatric Expertise of Deceased

It has emerged that a court in southern Portugal formally tasked a hospital to conduct a psychiatric expertise on a man who died two years ago, with a view to solving a case of inheritance. Astounded, the director of the Department of Psychiatry whom the order was given to, explained that she had never seen that in her 25-year long career. In response to the directive, the Director simply notified that she was unable to carry out the expertise. In Portugal, psychiatric expertise costs 400 euros. 4 Taiwan: He Has to Repay Mum In Taiwan, a 41-year-old dentist by name Chu has been ordered by the Supreme Court to pay his mother 22,330,000 Taiwanese dollars (about 626,000 US dollars) in reimbursement of the sums she spent to raise him. The apex court of the island has determined that it is incumbent on the man to respect the contract he signed with his mother 20 years ago and by which he pledged to repay her. The complainant, owner of a dental clinic then, raised her two children alone after divorcing her husband in 1990. Lest no one take care of her during her old days, Mrs Lo signed a contract with her two sons, when they were 20, to the effect that they should pay her an agreed amount of money when the time is ripe. Contrary to the elder son who eventually agreed to honour his signature to an extent, the younger chose to argue in court that their contract was contrary to the custom whereby a child’s upbringing by their parents is not measured in financial terms. Lower courts had ruled in his favour, but the Supreme Court has decided that a contract is a contract.

The plush Shibuya suburb has decided to make it the first robot in Japan, and perhaps in the world, to be granted real identity under the name Shibuya Mirai. Aside dialogues, Mirai is fond of taking pictures and retouching in a very funny way selfies sent to it by its online friends.

He has accordingly decided to impose a fine of 100 pounds on late-coming lovebirds. Even a tenminute lateness is enough to attract the fine from the vicar, in Bearsted and Turnham, in Kent. Exemptions have however been granted couples stuck in a traffic jam on the freeway or the victims of other unpredictable events. All other couples must pay the fee, which will be redistributed to the organist, the bell ringers, the beadle and the choir children who have to wait for latecomers.

Vincent Latsa Kobla Djokoto is a 22-year old student. Over the last few months, he has been contributing feature articles in the magazine, which have attracted various reactions from our readers and followers. ENJOY lets you know a bit more about this columnist.

Djokoto

Who is V. L. K. Djokoto? Vince is a patriotic citizen of Ghana passionate about the art of nation building. I am a son of Accra, by the fortunes of birth, and I hail from Anyako — a picturesque lagoon island located in the Volta Region — from the Tenge Dzokoto Royal Family. My Great-great-grandfather Chief Tenge Dzokoto II, a staunch Anlo nationalist and anti-imperialist, served as Dufia, or City Ruler of Anyako and Miafiaga, or Commander-In-Chief, Left Wing Army Division of the Anlo State. My Great-grandfather Chief Tenge Dzokoto III also served as Dufia of Anyako and Miafiaga of the Anlo State (1921 - 1946). My grandfather D. K. T. Djokoto, Prince of Anyako, was a pioneer of Ghana's Diplomatic Corps, serving the 1st and 2nd Republics of Ghana as Second Secretary of Foreign Affairs (1957-1961) and as both First Secretary for Consular affairs and Minister-Counsellor at the Ghana High Commission, United Kingdom (1961 - 1966). He was also Director, Legal and Consular Division, Ministry of External Affairs (1966). He then served as Chargé d'Affaires, Ghana Embassy, Egypt (1966-1970). appointed as a Judge, Judicial Service of Ghana (1971) shortly before his untimely death at the A. L. Adu Lodge. My father is a lawyer and my mother a restauranteur. I also have one sibling. Where did you receive your primary/ secondary education and undergraduate studies? I received my primary education at the Christ the King School - a catholic school within close proximity of the Flagstaff House - and later enrolled at The Roman Ridge School for my secondary school education where I served as Senior Prefect before pursuing and obtaining a Bachelor of Laws, Law at Swansea University. After Undergraduate Studies? Upon completion of my undergraduate studies, I interned as Legal Aide at the Directorate of Legal Services, Ghana Armed Forces for a few months, gaining insight on the work ethic and responsibilities of the Ghana Armed Forces. I later enrolled into the Judicial Clerkship programme as a Legal Clerk and Research Assistant

serving at the Circuit Court; High Court and Supreme Court for about a year before departing the Republic to read the Legal Practice Course at City, University of London. Any moral/emotional gain from those experiences? The maxim of 'Work and Happiness' is deeply entrenched in the Ghanaian Dream. And the fulfilment of service motivated the daily morning drive to work through the traffic-jammed streets of Accra trying to beat rush hour - shuffling through various radio stations and latching onto a hot cup of Hausa coco. On Television & Radio Interview experiences. As a youth activist, I recognize the importance of mass media in safeguarding our democratic values — such as freedom of speech — which enhances the civic participation of many Ghanaians, ensuring public opinion remains influential. In August 2016, I was warmly received by Sammy Forson on Live FM, at their Adabraka-based studio, to discuss the duty of the youth in pushing the agenda for a

PROFILE better quality of life and standard of living in Ghana. This was my first time on air. I was also a guest on ‘Good Evening Ghana’, an award-winning current affairs program on Metro TV and it was an honour to communicate with a wide audience and speak to issues dear to the youth, especially on such a prestigious media platform hosted by the prominent journalist Paul Adom-Otchere. I briefly revised a few points on my tablet while the make-up artist powdered my face then quickly proceeded to the main studio for the interview. The host was affable and extended his personal support for the cause pledging financial support. The most challenging, and perhaps, engaging interview was on GHOne TV hosted by Baisiwaa DowuonaHammond: each statement I uttered was met with critical scrutiny in an eloquently aggressive manner. I enjoyed the interaction and laud her efforts to commit fundraising initiatives and conventions of this calibre to utmost transparency and accountability. All of these interviews took place within the same week, I had been rallying support for a convention scheduled to take place that month. I’ve also provided social commentary on Radio XYZ 93.1 FM as studio guest occasionally. Your favourite meal? Fufu and Ebunebunu — and a calabash of fresh palm-wine. I love local cuisine! What music do you listen to? I listen to Reggae and Afrobeat often, it keeps my spirits up. But my ears are open to all genres and melodies. And who is your favourite artist?

My favourite artiste is Sade Adu - I was lured by her debut studio album ‘Diamond Life’ released in 1984. Her voice is soothing and her passion is pure. I also listen to Amaa Rae - she’s spinning a new wave of creativity, as far as artistry goes, into the music industry. As a youth, you must have a celebrity crush? Ebony Reigns! She seems to embody the millennial era of the young, wild and free. In other words, you don’t fancy the scandal that almost always erupts in Ghana in the wake of each of her spectacles? She is an artiste and has her own unique way of expressing herself creatively. Her music is good – Ghanaians enjoy it! Where do you hang out? The beach is ideal for leisure hours - I hang out at the La Tawala Beach regularly during the weekends and occasionally on Wednesday evenings for Reggae Night. I often write articles on the beach as well, preferably during sunrise hours on the weekend. I enjoy a Kokroko cocktail at The Republic Bar & Grill or Five Fingers at Purple Pub, both in Osu, every now and then too. I also like to go engage in road trips outside Accra, mainly between Anyako and Saltpond. The last movie you watched? Heritage Africa by Kwaw Ansah. It is by all standards a classic film which narrates the pre-Independence Gold Coast era with excellence. What is the last book you read? The Prince by Machiavelli. Kindly share with us aspirations for the future

your

Ultimately, I intend to become a distinguished public servant and a dedicated family man.

I sense a roaring desire for a new atmosphere of freedom. Yes, we are a sovereign Republic but the mass of our people, plagued with poverty and disease, feel excluded from the gains of a revolutionary Independence Movement which promised liberation from such instruments of oppression. I hope to help revive a spirit of intestinal fortitude in our Republic and inspire this generation to take a leap of faith. In 1957, while Ghana had just emerged on earth as a democratic modern nationState led by Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, the United States of America had already ascended to the moon — there is a century-long gap that must be bridged and, now more than ever, Ghana demands a sacrifice of each citizen to labour toward a Great Republic, especially from us the youth. e ENJOY No 126 Jan-Feb 2017 | 43

1. Embrace learning moments The first and most important step to cultivating more real and meaningful relationships is to embrace our lessons and our teachers as our path to growth and healing. Often we attract challenging people and relationships because they bring attention to something within ourselves that needs healing. This could be a limiting belief or fear, likely the result of a painful past experience. Because most of these fears and limiting beliefs are subconscious, we don't know we need to heal them. We need to heal these fears, so we will keep attracting the relationships and people that trigger them so we can become aware of them. This is often the hardest part, as it usually requires you to be grateful for a situation or relationship that might have brought you pain. By forgiving and being grateful for whatever pain you experienced, you are bringing healing to yourself and begin cultivating healthier and more loving relationships. Action Step Reflect on your past relationships, especially the more challenging ones. Pinpoint the first time you ever felt that way, as well as every time since then that you can recall. Reflect on what these relationships were trying to bring to your attention, so you recognize them as blessings.

2.Give value to things that have it Stop wasting your time and energy on relationships with people who don't reciprocate. That doesn’t mean hating these people. It just means that you won't exhaust yourself trying to keep people around who perhaps don’t really want to be there or are simply on their own path for now. All relationships require a certain degree of work and nurturing, but if we give without receiving the same in return (remember that each person will exhibit different nurturing behaviors, so someone may just love you differently than you expect), we are creating an energetic imbalance. This actually pushes people away and creates friction rather than bringing them closer. So the best thing you can do is relax and focus more on the people who do value you. That doesn’t mean you have to end the other relationships. It just means that you give them room to breathe. Although some relationships may drift away, you’ll know this means the relationship has served its purpose and no amount of pulling from you was going to keep this person in your life. Action Step Identify where you feel as though you are chasing or trying to pull someone closer to you. Then identify people who are readily around and eager to enjoy your company. Give the former room to breathe, and focus on enjoying the company of those who are ready and willing to spend some time with you. By doing so, not only do you feel better, but you become a magnet for people who will value your company.

3. Don't settle for less Don’t settle just because you fear being alone. Our fear affects our judgment; compatibility can't be measured through fear. When you settle for less than your expectations, you block your expectations from ever coming to fruition. By expectations, I don't necessarily mean someone who has x job, or makes x amount, or has x car, and is x feet tall. Rather, focus on how you would like to feel in the relationship, and what sort of values or characteristics are important for you in order to have a real and meaningful relationship. When you know what you want, you'll set a powerful intention to attract the right relationship into your life. Action Step Reflect on what you're looking for in a relationship. Make a list of your expectations. Keep this list somewhere you can see it and practice feeling as though it already exists in your life. Knowing what we want is only half the battle. Already feeling as though we have it and being an energetic match for it is the other half.

what you need For a serving of 4-6

INGREDIENTS BEANS

• 4 medium tomatoes • 1 large onion (chopped) • 1 clove of pressed garlic • 100ml red palm oil or vegetable oil • 2 chillies (optional) • Salt to taste (± 1 seasoning cube) • 1 teaspoon of ground ginger • 500g black-eyed peas or red beans

PLANTAIN

• 4 very ripe plantains • Vegetable oil (for deep frying) • Some salt and/or pepper

preparation

BEANS: Wash and soak beans

in cold water for 1 hour. Then, in a large pot and using 2 litres of water, boil your beans. The pot should be partially closed. After ± 5 minutes, reduce the heat and simmer the beans for ± 1,5 hours, or until they are soft (mushy even). If more water is needed during the boil, add only boiling water to it. When the beans have cooked, drain them in a colander and set aside. In another pot, heat the oil and add the onions, garlic, chillies and ginger. After ± 3 minutes, stir in the mashed tomatoes and add your salt and pepper and/or seasoning cube. Add water and cook for ± 10 minutes before stirring in the beans. Cook, stirring intermittently for 15 more minutes. Now they are ready for serving.

PLANTAIN: Cut both ends and

cut through skin length-wise. Peel. Cut into diagonal pieces. Season with a bit of salt and pepper (optional). Heat oil and when it is hot, fry the plantain pieces. Toss them occasionally to ensure all are cooked. When they are all brown, remove and drain in kitchen paper. Serve.

raising the bar

for

heart health

Happy February! Happy New Year too! Well, it’s that time of year when LOVE is flowing in the air! Yes, it’s the month for Valentine’s Day! During this time, let’s not only think of the emotional aspect of the heart, but let’s also focus on the physical heart. Let’s focus on keeping our physical hearts healthy!

HEARTY WORKOUT!

In America, heart disease is the #1 killer of women and physical inactivity is one of several major risk factors (www.hearttruth.org). Here are 2 tips to help you “Raise the Bar” for your Heart Health!

Equipment: Barbell Estimated time: 20 minutes total Plan: Do exercises 1-4 once for 30 seconds each (minimal breaks between). Repeat 3 times.

1. Move during the day. Take walks at work (walk around the office, walk to lunch and/or walk through the building), do housework, go for a bike ride, take the stairs, or park far away from building entrances. For every hour you sit, get up and mover for 2 minutes. 2. Do at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity/ week. It can be 30 minutes for 5 days/week or just 10 minute bouts of activity a few times during the day. Exercising at this level can yield significant health benefits (World Health Organization, 2011 Guidelines). Shown in pictures are five exercises to help you “Raise the Bar” for your Heart Health! Give them a try and let me know how it goes!
